One of my neighbors moved away a few weeks ago and and I think they left their cat behind because now there's just this skittish as frick black cat skulking around the neighborhood. The thing doesn't act like an outdoor or feral cat they definitely just gave a housecat the boot, it's kind of sad. I've been trying to feed it and it started hanging around my house more but it doesn't let me come close. I hate to "gatekeep" something as simple and universal as liking cats, but there is clearly a difference in the way I am a cat person and the way many other people are cat people. They don't appreciate a cat for the creature that it is, they overly anthropomorphize it. They talk down to it in the same googoo-gaga baby talk that you would use on a small child, and I strongly suspect they are using the cat as a substitute for children they don't have (and are probably in denial about wanting). They don't respect their cat as a fully grown adult of it's species who, while less intelligent than us, sees and interacts with the world in an entirely different way, a way that both demonstrates and inspires curiosity.
I watched some gameplay of Stray (probably about the same as playing it myself) and thought it looked promising up until the point where the robot companion appeared. Cats don't interact with the world through dialogue and inventories.
