i bought like 30 or so physical switch games in, idk, the first three years and then sold them all on ebay. the majority still sold for more than 50% of what i originally paid and like half a dozen were even more worth than what i originally paid for because they only sold like the first production run or something and then went digital only for those specific games.
i think the worst selling games were final fantasy 10 and 12 both going for less than $20.
what i would give to be able to sell all the shitty digital only games i bought in steam sales over the years. this is one of the few things that makes physical something worth while. being able to get your money back even after you enjoyed and finished your game vs being stuck with the piece of shit digital game once your return period is up.

I'm buying games on Steam less and less and switched to buying physical copies for PS4. Some games are much cheaper than their PC counterparts, also EA and Ubisoft stuff can be bought for 5 bucks and I don't have to bother with their DRMs and separate launchers.

Digital is a true waste of money because you'll never get anything back on the original purchase unless you are playing a game that has a liquid economy where you can trade items/accounts for cash.
With emulation, sure you're not spending money, but you're also not making money. Most people also don't even play the games they've downloaded because of choice paralysis. You also don't get the joy of reading the manuals in hand and admiring the artwork (which is an experience in itself)
There's a common misconception that collectors don't play their games, that might be true for full set collectors but majority of people who are buying physical copies aren't going for a complete set and are mainly buying games that look interesting or have heard good things about them. They are also more inclined to play the game because it's in their immediate view and also want to get their moneys worth.

Coming from someone else who collects physical games, this is actual bullshit. The vast majority of games are bargain bin garbage that did NOT retain their value. For every Xenogears or Earthbound, there's 100 Madden 97s or Shaq Fus. Even many really good games don't retain all of their value due to being so widely available. Either they sold millions in their day or they were released so many times that the original release doesn't hold any worth. Pokemon is a fricking anomaly precisely because the games are so widely available.
Of course you can collect intelligently, buying largely just the best games with the highest chance of becoming a classic. But multiplayer slop #856 or movie game #362 will remain in the bargain for a long time making niche collecting the only thing worth it if you're looking to retain value long term.
