they fit different niches, one meant to be for a forest and the other for factories/industrial zones.
        then hisuian voltorb happened.

Not true. It also exists to lurk inside of abandoned power plants and Team Rocket bases and explode in your face.

I thought that was an accepted fact. It’s a staple of Japanese RPGs, of course Pokemon would also employ it

People who point at Voltorb and Electrode as especially terrible designs are dumb and here are the reasons why

The fact they knew the PokeBall would become an iconic symbol before the first games even came out is pretty dope

Voltorb is negative(angry) electricity and Electrode is based on positive(happy) electricity which is why it turns upside down when it evolves, and the Hisuian forms inverse this. being based on a fundamental concept of electricity is cool

Simplicity is elegance. A simple design is not a bad design, it's just uncomplicated, which fits Voltorb and Electrode because their gimmick is to explode. It's very direct attack method. No frills. Just a terrifying exploding ball.

People always harp on about designs, but what about other things that make a mon cool? Electrode and Voltorb are cool because they're EXPRESSIVE. Their expressions are highly animated and over-the-top, and this works best with a simple design. They have a lot of energy to them and they do a great job making these guys feel volatile.

    > Game character is build around its role in its game.
    > OP is thinking that it's something bad.

I hope that you'll never make any game.

Pokemon should go back to designing mons after classic RPG staples tbdesu. Way more soulful than shitting out yet another cartoon dog or psychic/fairy waifubait.

I was gonna suggesr an owlbear but I guess Aromatisse technically counts. Then again, its not like Pokemon hasn't reused ideas for mons before.

To think that Voltorb are actually of plant-based origin, plus the fact that in Hisui the Noble Pokemon are recognized to be descendants implies that Voltorb and Electrode to indeed have some form of reproduction, even after losing their Grass-type.
