This is the real issue, there hasn't even been one game in this fricking series that was any good. I emulated 1 and 2, then played 3 and 4 on PC, then went straight to 0 and K2. Even 0, which everyone jerks off as having the best gameplay, is alarmingly clunky and dated. K2 is a technical leap forward but a mechanical regression. I played better Beat-em-ups than K2 in the early 2000s.
The minigames aren't that great either and the stories are pretty stupid past 2. I just don't see how anyone can look at these games and go "Yeah there are quality experiences." They're a mishmash of mediocre shit with dumb anime plots slapped on top. For the first few I can forgive it, but they never really advanced at all.

Play Lost Judgment. Combat wise, it's among the better ones. The story is more divisive compared to the first Judgment which may or may not be your thing, but from a gameplay point of view, it's better in most/all fronts.
I got into Yakuza when 2 came out in the US and I'm happy it's popular now tbh. Without the support the series would have ended a long time ago.

There's nothing in the series that contradicts Dead Souls and they haven't said it's not so for all intents and purposes it's canon until proven otherwise. The only real inconsistency it has is the time frame of how quickly Kamurocho had multiple buildings that the Japanese army destroyed rebuilt, that's all.
