It seems like people hate to acknowledge this because of the really great 7 or 8 games on the N64, the plethora of shovelware on the PS1, and the amount of threads devoted to this topic. I do agree, but try to be more original next time. Thanks.
Here's a list of all the reasons, since you only know the stupidest ones.
1- Playstation and N64 were two systems among a generation of a dozen different consols trying to break into 3D. Saturn, Neo Geo, 32X, 3DO, Jaguar.
It's not hard to feel good about having an N64 when you hear about a 600 Dollar 2D console with game cartridges that cost 200 dollars each. Or you're friend tries to show you Sonic 3D blast on the saturn and it's Sonic 3D blast on the Saturn (which is not fair to the Saturn, but it's what fricking happened and it's Sega's fault it happened).
2- Not everyone only bought one game console every 5 years. if you had enough siblings, More than one game system meant less fighting over game time. If you had DINK relatives who wanted to help out your parents, Getting them an N64 meant not having to ask what PSX games you had spoiling the surprise. If your friends were over at each others houses a lot, at least ONE of you having a different system made a pretty huge difference.
Speaking of friends:
3- Online hadn't caught on yet. Playstation had two control ports, unless you spent 80 bucks on a multitap- which is if you could find a store that sold them. And game devs also knew you wouldn't buy a multitap so very few games had more than 2 player. If your friend group had more than 2 people, then having 1 of them get the N64 opened up a lot of options for the whole group.
where is final fantasy 7? or is it on sony's consoles because they went with cds like everyone else so game wouldnt be held back, while nintendo began being autistic morons? just the fact that they to this day refuse to make normal controller is because of the failed sony deal, where sony's controller became standard, but nintendo, due to their japanese roots and value of honor, refuse to use similar design because it reminds them too much of sony and a shameful dispray
I tried ctr on my psp. Found it hard to see shit on such a tiny screen as it was designed for a big crt. Anyway did crt have anything in it that compared to block fort?
CTR is better than MK64. No debate here, honestly.
Crash Bash is (imo) better than Mario Party 1-3. I find it's minigames infinitely more fun and game-like, rather than some cheap rng-hell scenarios. Although visually I prefer MP.
Smash, however, is a great game without an equivalent on PS1. Tekken and Mortal Kombat aren't really in the same genre imo nor are they as fun. >GoldenEye
Nobody really cares. The only reason it was popular is because the franchise was popular as frick during that time. In reality the game is shit.
I feel like the good N64 games aged better than the good PSX games since most of the good N64 games were action games with analog movement. Most of the good PSX games are either jarpigs which all end up feeling dated thanks to overtuned random encounter rates and overly long animations, or 3D games with archaic control schemes like Tomb Raider.
Honestly I'd argue the PSX actually set the JRPG genre back because early 3D graphics basically mandated random encounters. Chrono Trigger showed early on how to do a really good game without them but that wouldntve been feasible with 3D models.
>jarpigs are better than actual games
no
all the best super famicom games got sequels on N64
I'm pretty sure most PS1 players never even played a single jrpg. Maybe it's a regional or generational thing, but neither I nor my friends/family played any of those. The leading genres on PS1 were platformers (Crash, Spyro, Rayman) and sports games (football, racing, fighting). Some people also had RE, Tomb Raider, MGS or YGO, depending on their individual taste. Nothing outside of those existed.
Mk64 was better than crash racing. I didn't know one person who even owned crash racing growing up. Outside of street fighter games I mostly played single player games on my psx. >goldeneye was shit
I had fun unlocking all the levels as it was hard as frick on a baby system like N64 and playing multiplayer with my mates was always fun.
>beetle racing >tracks are foggy messes with nothing standing out >accidently slip off the track? No worries keep your full speed despite driving on grass or snow >accidently smash into a wall? No worries that's how it's suppose to be played >lousy music which matches with everything else in this supposed racer
>Nobody really cares. The only reason it was popular is because the franchise was popular as frick during that time. In reality the game is shit.
This is completely reverse compared with what happened at the time. Goldeneye had loads of people playing it and was the the game that kids were talking about at the time and wanted an N64 for, with local multiplayer as a big part of it, and most of whom didn't care that much for the movie. The license for James Bond went to other studios to make their own games, but none of them ended up as good or shifting as Goldeneye 007 itself.
Even if kids didn't care much for Bond having that franchise behind the game really helped it tremendously. Look how shit Perfect Dark was by comparison.
I'm a a big fan for Jaws and Oddjob thanks to that game as well.

A lot of PSX games had analogue controls though. Unless you're talking within the first 3 years the thing existed. Then sure. But it was on the market from 1994 to 2004, so that's not very relevant.
A thing that makes me love the PSX over the N64 was the variety, higher quality, and volume of games.
N64 got RE2, but PSX had RE1, 2 and 3, dino crisis 1 and 2, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Silent Hill, Galerians, Soul of the Samurai, Vampire Hunter D, and more.
N64 had the one best game of the genre and thats it. PSX had the entire genre, including more games with more gameplay variations and more story telling styles. That's basically how it worked across the board
W
So what would you rather have? The one game everyone and their brother gushes over for every genre? Or the choice of a much larger pool of games, across more genres, that could suit specific preferences much better?
Its like comparing Mac to PC. sure Mac is "premium" and does specific things better, but PC is just the better option for more people for more reasons. Thats what we're talking about here.
This is how it does for me, honestly. Had a PSX back in the day but I can't stand playing anything in it anymore. On contrast, the N64 has been my favorite of the gen nowadays.
as someone who 'quit' gaming I got rid of 12 consoles and use N64 exclusively.
I only really play for irl multiplayer or in short bursts to get a high score.
No more lengthy story based games I beat all the good ones.
I also like the hardware for not having moving parts as I intend to keep my collection for 20+ more years.
Did I make the right decision having n64 my only console?
Thats probably the best one to own if you mostly do local multiplayer a lot. Personally I would have chosen one with a bigger and more varied library if you like arcadey games like a sega console
I show loyalty to Sega the most but beat most of the games I wanted to beat.
Had about 30 games each for Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast before I got rid of my collection.
Dreamcast had multiplayer games in every category so it wouldve been a good do everything console; mine had a Model M, 2 Noctua fans, etc.
I was very serious about it running Half-Life, Linux, etc without getting hot.
The PS2 I had with sold state drive wouldve been ideal because I could even emulate other consoles but then I wouldnt have a physical collection.
I admit N64 really sucks and am already bored with it, I guess its more of a nostalgia thing and me completing a collection that isnt impossible.
It is one of the more reasonable collections to complete given its price and smaller library in general. But yea I can't imagine playing only n64 games for like 6 months and not get bored unless there is a lot of drunk get togethers playing mario party or mario kart. If i were to pick only one console for collecting i might do og xbox for a decently sized and cheap library, but I would honestly just recommend buying or installing one with a 2 tb hdd and call it a day. Rail shooters=n64 just for Starfox and Sin and Punishment, two of the all-time best. Including saturn? Panzer Dragoons give these a run for their money.
Speaking of the Saturn, we can’t really talk about shmups for ps1 or n64 without noting that they both get their asses kicked by Sega’s console in this regard. Ps1 gets the nod over n64 due to Einhander and Darius Gaiden and a few good arcade ports. N64 is pathetic here.
RPGs=PS1. Final fantasy full stop. The most lopsided genre. Paper Mario and Hybrid Heaven are ok but just don’t hold a candle to the PSX output in the slightest. Jesus, man.
It mostly won because it was cheaper and easier to pirate for. Most people buying any game console are buying it to play sports games and maybe like one game that has guns in it.

HANG ON. I have 2 and they're both wonky, but can't remember the specifics between the both of them. I'll get back to you on that once I'm done fiddling with'em.

Alright, so:
Blue Adapter(PS1/2 to PC USB Dual Controller Adapter) >Reads my PS1 Dualshock controller inputs (Model SCPH - 1200 A) in both ports >Doesn't read the PS2's (Model SCPH - 10010 A), but the Analog light can be turned on/off
Black Adapter (USB PS2 to PS3/PC Controller Adapter) >Reads both controllers inputs >D-pad reads as the Left Analog stick while the stick functions as itself properly IE.) They're both linked, tired to separate them with no success To whoever it was that recommended this controller on here several months back: FRICK YOU!
Ah, I bought the blue one on lik-sang (rip). I think it worked well enough with my PS2 controller, but that was more than 15 years ago, so I don't remember exactly.
Nowadays I just use my DS3.
Even the "good" N64 sucked, i couldn't get into all those Rare games, crash and spyro really spoiled me, PSX had everything, every genre, for every demographics, even now with the full 64 romsets, nothing interest me, i still play psx games and will never stop.
N64 lovers are nintendrone with no standards mommies bought the console because it was more kid friendly.
Even saturn just with its shmup library is better than N64.
It depends on what you want. Personally, I don't think any of the 3D platformers on PlayStation are quite like Super Mario 64. Nothing is an exact replacement for each other between the systems. (Unless it's quite literally a superior port.) I'm fricking tired of these console war homosexualry threads. Spyro is one of my favorite games. Banjo-Kazooie is also one of my favorite games. I'm tired of it being presented as an ultimatum to only play one of them when it's perfectly reasonable today to own and play multiple retro consoles.
Only reason Saturn can compete with the ps1 is because the 2d animations are much better and Sega worked magic on Sega rally, vf2, fighters megamix, Panzer dragoon trilogy,
In my honest opinion as an N64 kiddie, N64 had two major strengths and that was big 3D adventure games like Zelda or Banjo Kazooie or even Turok, and four player party games like Smash Bros or Mario Kart or Goldeneye.
PS1 is more varied, and has more games in general, obviously. Games that tried to be fully immersive 3D tended to look a bit of a mess because of all of the wobbling. Games with fixed cameras worked a lot better within the Playstation's limitations, especially if they made heavy use of pre-rendered graphics.
Overall I'd probably say the Playstation library is "better" just by virtue of there being so much more of, but it really depends on individual tastes. As a kid I pretty much wanted to play Zelda, so I bought the console that had Zelda, and I was happy with it. These days my tastes have drifted more toward arcade oriented genres like shmups or sidescrolling action games, of which the N64 doesn't really have a whole lot to offer. I care less about JRPGs than ever, mind you, so you may as well just replace all of those SquareEnix games with a big black void, for all I care.
If I had to repeat the generation I can't imagine I would be satisfied with anything less than both consoles, and maybe a good gaming PC on the side.
the serial port was used for game linking with 2 systems
the parallel port was not used for anything official, but action replays and game sharks used it, so Sony removed them later on
I believe Nintendo is the greatest developer of all time, but you'd have to be either insane or an absolute nostalgiagay to disagree with this, it's astonishing this topic still generates discussion to this day lol
I mean the N64 was a good system to own as a kid if you were not going to pirate because at the end of the day it has more than enough games to make you entertained, and some of the best games of that gen came out for it. But now in hindsight, even the (jap) Saturn library was more varied and had a bigger share of games that were good, in absolute numbers.
i'd rather have 3 perfect games that I can replay for the rest of my life than 200 pretty good games that you 'beat'. but not everyone is like that so its ok
It seems like people hate to acknowledge this because of the really great 7 or 8 games on the N64, the plethora of shovelware on the PS1, and the amount of threads devoted to this topic. I do agree, but try to be more original next time. Thanks.

Final Fantasy 7 was better played on PC
True , the mods on the pc version were amazing
>MIDI musics in your path
Not at the time, no
N64 had better party games ie Smash, Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64.
CTR was the better kart racing game, IMO
I tried ctr on my psp. Found it hard to see shit on such a tiny screen as it was designed for a big crt. Anyway did crt have anything in it that compared to block fort?

No shit. Nobody sane claims otherwise.

The 3d Psx games are basically unplayable so I'll take n64
Crash and Spyro are six great scotformers that top anything from the genre on the N64
This is how it does for me, honestly. Had a PSX back in the day but I can't stand playing anything in it anymore. On contrast, the N64 has been my favorite of the gen nowadays.
That's true but the N64's library still ain't bad, I'd take its 30-40 good games over the following complete libraries:
>Saturn
>Dreamcast
>Gamecube
as someone who 'quit' gaming I got rid of 12 consoles and use N64 exclusively.
I only really play for irl multiplayer or in short bursts to get a high score.

The simple gameplay keeps me satiated but juuust bored enough to not get readdicted to vidya.
Also if the library was bigger Id be spending money unnecessarily
That seems like a good balance, good on you anon.
That's not saying much.
Why make a thread about the obvious? The PS library wipes the floor with the N64's. Only a fully moronic person would suggest otherwise.
Depends on the genre.
3d platformers=n64. Ape escapes and spyro are no Mario 64 or BK. Crash, Croc, Tomb raiders all fall short.

I won't bother with the whole post, but this part at least gave me a good laugh.
i did a fricking double take at that
i am not convinced that poster has played a single one of the games they brought up

No Pokémon Snap?
the N64 has more 10/10 games, but the PS1 has more 9/10s
>This system's library was objectively better than the N64's.
Sizzling hot take righ here
Castlevania sotn
Metal gear solid
Yugioh
Resident evil 123
So yes
You mean Resident Evil 1 and 3
I know re 2 was on 64 too, but i prefeer the uncompresed music/fmv of the ps1 ver.
And yeah 1 and 3 were my favs at the time
>objectively better
>objectively
>better
had more good games
n64 the good games were better though
as an adult in 2022, i would say to buy them both
The order is PS1 > Saturn > N64 > PC-FX.
This isn't disputable.
>forgot 3DO, CDi, and Jaguar
Yes, and?
water is wet
And OP is gay.
The PnesOne has better JRPGs and bigger gaymes. The N64 had some pretty amazing titles though far less games.
>library is at least 4 times larger
makes sense
psx won, look at british, french, italian and iberian sales from 1995 to 2002. PSX won due to having better games and most of the games.
Going by sales is a shit indicator as psx xmen vs SF probably outsold Saturn's version.
It mostly won because it was cheaper and easier to pirate for. Most people buying any game console are buying it to play sports games and maybe like one game that has guns in it.
I wanna get a controller adapter for emulation, will any do or is there a specific one thats a must buy?
*sigh*
HANG ON. I have 2 and they're both wonky, but can't remember the specifics between the both of them. I'll get back to you on that once I'm done fiddling with'em.
Alright, so:
Blue Adapter(PS1/2 to PC USB Dual Controller Adapter)
>Reads my PS1 Dualshock controller inputs (Model SCPH - 1200 A) in both ports
>Doesn't read the PS2's (Model SCPH - 10010 A), but the Analog light can be turned on/off
Black Adapter (USB PS2 to PS3/PC Controller Adapter)

>D-pad reads as the Left Analog stick while the stick functions as itself properly IE.) They're both linked, tired to separate them with no success
To whoever it was that recommended this controller on here several months back: FRICK YOU!
Ah, I bought the blue one on lik-sang (rip). I think it worked well enough with my PS2 controller, but that was more than 15 years ago, so I don't remember exactly.
Nowadays I just use my DS3.
Blue dongle one works for my original dualshock2, cant tell you the exact model off the top of my head, didnt even know there were multiple ones.
That being said, vibration doesnt work.
>didnt even know there were multiple ones
Yeah there's several variations. The differences are mostly internal with the circuit board.
Rare games were no better than PSX shovelware, you are right. But M64 is king.
You can't have an objectively good video game, so that's a nonsensical statement. Either you like it or you don't.
Obviously this is true.
I am more interested in the advances in terms of peripherals & connections of the ps1 more than the games or something else.
pretty good console
The parallel I/O I only used for Game Shark. But what were the other uses of the parallel and serial I/O?
the serial port was used for game linking with 2 systems
the parallel port was not used for anything official, but action replays and game sharks used it, so Sony removed them later on
thanks for stating the obvious, you fricking moron. Waste of a thread.
n64 is a much better multiplayer console
other than that, only 20-30 games worth owning
So is the Saturn's
I believe Nintendo is the greatest developer of all time, but you'd have to be either insane or an absolute nostalgiagay to disagree with this, it's astonishing this topic still generates discussion to this day lol
agreed
I mean the N64 was a good system to own as a kid if you were not going to pirate because at the end of the day it has more than enough games to make you entertained, and some of the best games of that gen came out for it. But now in hindsight, even the (jap) Saturn library was more varied and had a bigger share of games that were good, in absolute numbers.
i'd rather have 3 perfect games that I can replay for the rest of my life than 200 pretty good games that you 'beat'. but not everyone is like that so its ok
