It literally didn't. It was a franchise successful within its niche which suddenly exploded in popularity for a brief moment due to marketing hype. This fooled Squaresoft into thinking they were one of the most prestigious franchises in the world, causing them to do moronic things like waste all their money on a feature-length FMV, which resulted in the creator of the series resigning in shame and the franchise being permanently destroyed.
FF7-8-9-10 all sold like 20M copies within their console lifespan. Those are CoD numbers before CoD became a thing.

then on the PS2 people suddenly saw a treasure trove of games coming out, so FF got literally choked out and forgotten

FF was only good for it's cinematics. Now studios like Guerilla or Naughty Dog or Santa Monica filled that gap with gameplay that actually resembles cinematics and without shitty turn based gameplay there is no reason for FF to exist anymore.
Papa Sakagutchi left and it died the end. FFXVI at least had a good story. But FFXII, FFXIII, and FFXV don’t feel like real FF story and Character wise.
They should make a coop-based FF next.

X is a hallway sim and has all the same qualities that people shit on XIII for, but for some reason X gets a pass.
