The majority of DP cross gen evos were loved, they stopped doing them out of sheer laziness and stupidity
Some cross gen evos were disliked but Rhyperior wasn't one of them, it was always seen as a coolmon

The internet wasn’t nearly as accessible for kids back then. We all independently decided the cross-gens in Gen 4 sucked, with Rhyperior being one of the worst. You either had no irl friends or weren’t there.
It’s design is so great, they made him a starter for gen 5.
