PS1 is full of jank, PS2 is infinitely better.
N64 never played but many people say it's not worth it (few games), same with Saturn.
Older gen's have more timeless classics that aren't jank to play.
Nobody will put up with armoed core 1 when 5 and 6 exist.

AC1 is enjoyable on it's own, on atmosphere alone. The only PSX AC game that's an actual slog to replay is MoA due to the dogshit arm follow speed reduction.

I’m in the same boat, it’s a fun game.

I don’t see why OP thinks that the PS1 is full of jank and the PS2 isn’t. You can cherrypick good games or shovelware out of either one.

Not OP but I went back to play old ACs after 6 and I hated the first 3 ones, what a horrible barely fun formula. About as fun to play as Kings Field but at least Kings Field had a dungeon crawling element, that made it a bit fun. AC4 becomes fun but the missions are dogshit in that one and the story is just nonsense, AC6 is like a polished up fixed up version of AC4.

N64 has around 100 games worth playing, I counted. That is more than enough for me to buy a system, there is no way in hell you would get through every game 100% in a library as vast as the PS games and N64's strategy is too make less games but better, stuff like Banjo-Kazooie or Smash Bros was just way above any of the competition and then there is Ocarina of Time which is considered by nearly everyone to be the greatest video game ever made.

The problem is this board is filled with seething Sonyshits who just use the same NO GAMES because they get BTFO constantly over it when it comes to all PS consoles past PS2 and want revenge against anyone they come across.

No idea what these "gens" are but for me gaming peaked in the 8 and 16 bit eras with the 32 bit era also being a pretty legit mini-era. Mid-late 90s things started to get wobbly as first developers struggled to develop polygonal games and then it became all about moronicly lengthy gameplay experiences and attachment to moronic "stories", "characters" and "franchises".

The games industry evolved over a very short time and there a good games and games and everything in between across generations. What purpose does "generation X is best of all" serve? Does that mean there is absolutely no point playing anything outside of that window? And then you randomly pluck armoured Core out of your arsehole like that backs this garbage up. What exactly is the point of this shitty thread, I'm genuinely curious.

Not at all, people like to talk about how great NES/SNES was but when it comes to actually playing games today, pretty sure more people play FF 7/8/9 today than earlier FFs. More people play Symphony of the Night than NES/SNES Castlevanias. Early Tomb Raider, early RE, MGS1, all still played and very popular compared to NES/SNES titles. And pretty much nobody plays 2D racing games, but Sega Rally, Ridge Racer, Daytona, people still play that

I never played Final Fantasy games, but do people really prefer CD-era RPGs over cart-based era ones? Turn-based combat and random encounters work so much better (and faster) on carts, CD loading is a drag.

For FF they sure do. My problem with NES and even most SNES era JRPGs is they have tile based environments, locations are made out of repeating soulless tiles and look completely generic and boring. The ones with hand-drawn unique locations are rare. Meanwhile FF7/8/9 has gorgeous pre-rendered CGI as backdrops and all those locations are still iconic and popular.

            Anonymous

As I said I never played any FF, but that screenshot you posted looks pretty soulful.

It's boring is what it is. Just repeating tiles, you've seen one of those towns, you've seen them all

            Anonymous

Your taste is amazingly bad. High-quality tile-based backgrounds like that are far prettier than the kitschy, amateurish models used in later FF games' prerendered backgrounds. Those locations are still iconic and popular because people can't shut up about stuff that impressed them when they were kids. They were popular back then because normal people had (as they of course still have) bad taste.

The SNES took computing hardware technology almost as far as it could possibly go without unleashing Japanese people to do what they'd apparently always been desperate to do: filling optical discs with meaningless, over-the-top clutter. The story and mechanics of FF6 can easily be surpassed in various ways by other works, but the graphics and sound cannot.

Despite people whining a lot, games have always been getting better one gen to another. Early 3D gets a lot of flack but I think it's just people getting filtered, it's fun to see devs experiment with 3D for the first time, accidentally creating weird games that nobody would ever do again. It's an exciting gen, early 3D was exciting.
I actually think modern games are great but they're not exciting anymore, the frontier spirit of innovation died in the 2008 crisis. We're just polishing the same formulas we discovered in the pre-HD era

Don't deny what you were thinking. You're the only one with this mythical Australian living rent-free in you're head, desperately clinging to this delusion that the SNES was ever, in any way, a decent console. Zoomers prefer games with actual depth and sense of action, and the unfortunate 2.68 mhz bottlenecked SNES simply cannot deliver that experience compared it's far more powerful competitors.

I disagree. it was the 6th gen that was the jack of all trades master of none. all the genres that were carried from the 5th gen (JRPGs, platformers, collectathons, etc.) were worse than their 5th gen counterparts, and all the genres that started with the 6th gen (open world, console FPS, hack n slash) were improved and refined in the 7th gen.

I love the 5th and 7th gens because they mostly focused on a few genres and did those few genres very well. Peak gaming combining the 5th gen and the 7th gen and ironing out their flaws (low poly 3D, brown and piss, 240p/640p, 10fps)
