It's cool. I haven't played the new game they released. I'm a fan of the type of shit that inspired it though, don't know how someone with no exposure to that would enjoy the game.
The learning curve is the game. Once you've got everything figured out and are just going for different endings it mostly becomes a repetitive chore. Absolutely loved my first 20 hours with the game, though.
Two things appear to be true of Alexis Kennedy when you look at his works to date: He's too willing to sacrifice the gaming part of videogames to be fodder for his true goal of esoteric lore dumping, and he probably very badly wants to be a writer of some kind but can't find a more suitable outlet than videogames for his style of esoteric lore dumping storytelling style.
Or, put another, the dude cannot make a videogame to save his life
I think it's genuinely impressive that he's willing to completely say frick the player in favor of lore or what have you
But it doesn't really make for good games
im still mad about the early book of hours mock up images where it looked like a comfy vn but then it just became cultist simulator without the fun stress mechanics
He was fine within the confines of Fallen London, Seeking is absolutely brilliant and a lot of that is tied to the way game mechanics are used.
Ever since he got kicked out of that company for trying to shag everyone there has been the impression that he needs some oversight though.
It's a game that fricking sucks after the initial wow factor fades away. It feels esoteric for a couple of hours, like the barrier of entry is meant to make you feel like you're learning some forbidden knowledge, then afterwards you realize it's just a chore to play.
I'm playing it now. Feels like the early game when I was figuring things out was the most fun, until I got past the Stag Door and realise it's just going through the motions from there. Now I just keep ending up in a cycle of zoning out, letting too many emojis accumulate without realising and having to start again. At least the advanced legacies have a bit more figuring things out but having to go through a full run for each attempt gets in the way of that.
Cool lore and atmosphere though.
This is where im at too, once you get a handle on it you realize how much of a grind the early game is to even get past the stag, then theres more on top of that. Its still a unique and fun game that keeps bringing me back, but dying and realizing how much work it will be to go back to where you were is awful.
It's a shame because I do like the parts where it feels like a puzzle of parsing the lore descriptions and figuring what to put where, like I'm actually figuring out forbidden knowledge and esoteric rituals, but those parts are just too few and far between compared to all the going through the motions.
Maybe Book of Hours will have a bit more of what I'm looking for. Just a few more endings to go before I'm done and move on to that.
>see game >concept sounds fun >play it >it’s the most boring card game I’ve ever played in my life >refund
Would still love to play a game where you’re being pulled into a Lovecraftian cult and/or running a cult yourself but this isn’t what I’m looking for.
I found out you can abuse the detective job to get every follower exalted regardless of cult type and I have to force myself not to because it takes an incredibly long time to set up and then even longer to actually do
I guess so. Having a lot of reason isn't that useful moat of the time. The work for Bright Young Thing isn't infinite but gives you a huge 20 money when it eventually does fail, which is more than enough to get your ball rolling for other income sources.
It also has the effect of giving you a book you had in your previous game (if you died) so you can abuse it to give yourself a high level one at the start of the game, an amusing trick speedruns use to get really fast wins.
Glover is easy, just hire the 5 moth hireling and keep throwing it at your bosses until you're at the top, as unlike the edge ones they don't die if they fail. The best source of money is selling spintrias from the patrons anyway.
It was a cool experience but got a bit tiring. I also love the way the card description are written and have been searching for books with similar vibes to no avail. And no I dont mean lovecraftian.
I think it needs more variety towards the start. It's fantastic once the ball gets rolling and you start climbing the dream ladder/acquiring followers but dependent on what start you choose you can spend up to an hour spinning very mundane wheels with little esoteric shit going on at all.
Good game.

sex with neville
Thats not cat Caro
but he is a cat
fugg
fine too
>i cant be arsed to make ui convenient but here is some lore
hack
the other game is worse still
A good game, bit too harsh learning curve.

Delving into it's occult elements is great, but the gameplay is way too grindy.
I liked it when I pirated it
i am too smooth brained for it
All timer. Book of Hours was fun for a while too but it got dull way too quickly. Hope the dlc adds something interesting to come back to.

Can't write a book, can't make a game. Truly a cursed existence.

>fun stress mechanics
it wasn't fun or stressful, it was just tedious

I suck at it, but it's a very inventive and unique game and I wish more people would do shit like that.

Alex can't into gameplay, that homie still lives like it's Fallen London
At least Sunless Skies broke the curse.
He quit Failbetter after finishing SMEN, Skies was made after he left
>see game

I prefer Sunless Sea to be quite honest family.
Both are boring games. Hated them both.
You are a boring game and I hate you.
My name?
Cultistsimulator Sunlesssea.
I found out you can abuse the detective job to get every follower exalted regardless of cult type and I have to force myself not to because it takes an incredibly long time to set up and then even longer to actually do
We can all agree Physician is the best right?
>No timer for demotion on job
>steady 2 gold pay per work
>starts with all the reason you need

The only decent work I can find as the Bright Young is the Glover and Glover job which I absolutely hate.
Glover is easy, just hire the 5 moth hireling and keep throwing it at your bosses until you're at the top, as unlike the edge ones they don't die if they fail. The best source of money is selling spintrias from the patrons anyway.
It plays like a phone game, I don't like it at all
Shit
very good. I prefer it to book of hours even though I liked that too.
the soundtrack is excellent and really adds to the atmosphere
>Muh job n gold
>Hire bomb-maker
>Force him to do cult work
>Get free gold, Spintrias and ingredients you can later sell if you want
There
random rewards + notoriety aren't so good. commissions are just endless money at your leisure forever
>notoriety
What notoriety? You only get wounds on the guy if they fail job
Once you figure it out, there is no challenge whatsoever, it's just grind.
I was hooked until the repetition and grind of the early game made experimentation pointless. It's a wiki game.
It was a cool experience but got a bit tiring. I also love the way the card description are written and have been searching for books with similar vibes to no avail. And no I dont mean lovecraftian.
i cant deal with game mechanics that force you to act. The game would maybe interest me without the daily countdown and the cards expiring
I think it needs more variety towards the start. It's fantastic once the ball gets rolling and you start climbing the dream ladder/acquiring followers but dependent on what start you choose you can spend up to an hour spinning very mundane wheels with little esoteric shit going on at all.
