Thoughts on how Baldur's Gate 3 retconned Viconia as a character?

Thoughts on how Baldur's Gate 3 retconned Viconia as a character? Her potential romance with the Bhaalspawn was obviously discarded, and she's nowhere near neutral aligned. In fact, she's so easily thrown away as a character despite being so iconic in the series. Both Jaheira and Minsc talk shit about her too, it's like Larian just wanted to see her dead.

I mean her arc in this game was completely canon with her non-romance ending. She literally mentions going to Waterdeep and murdering her entire group there, which is exactly what happens in her non-romance ending.

Canonically, she is cruel & evil as frick, even if your actions in BG1&2 can mitigate that somewhat.

She murdered the group because they betrayed her, this has been retconned to Shar ordering her to murder them for shits and giggles. She also saved Suldanesselar and was accepted by the high elves in the non-romance ending. Retconned out entirely, it would be too incongruent with the caricature they wanted to turn her into.

She was evil, but never cruel as frick and you could change her alignment to neutral in BG2. Of course, you'd have known all that if you had actually played that game instead of relying on biased 4th hand accounts on what happened.

Canon is the terrible books (see Heroes of Baldur's Gate or Murder in Baldur's Gate WotC module). Larian actually cares too much about lore as it's following WotC's characterization of Viconia and the others, and Viconia is irredeemable sword-fodder like all drow not named Drizzt. Drow are so bad that they're one of the few races who it's okay for a classical paladin to torture and still remain good. You can and should kill them on sight no matter what their age or gender is.

In the Heroes of Baldur's Gate module she creates a hidden sanctuary for driders in memory of the brother who sacrificed himself for her to get out. She has never been as evil as you claim her to be.

I'm not fricking with you. Heroes of Baldur's Gate was released under WotC's DM's Guild thing. Basically Wizard's allows 3rd parties to publish things in their settings with their characters but if they don't publish it it's not considered canon.

Anon, I know it's not official. I've read it. I don't disagree with you. But Heroes of Baldur's Gate was first mentioned to support the claim that Viconia is irredeemably evil in Wizards canon, and the actual module does not support this at all.

I guess you're not the anon who made the original claim after all, but it seemed that it was some quick backpedaling and goalpost moving when called out about a blatant lie.

I'm still curious, if we disregard HoBG, where has Wizards ever mentioned Viconia in anything? She was not mentioned in Murder and I don't remember her getting mentioned in the shitty books either. Though people and Wizards keep ignoring stuff from the books anyway, in them Minsc was a redhead and he quit adventuring to work in the Copper Coronet.

    >Plenty of BG1/2 Companions you could pull from which fans like, who shouldn't be dead due to the passage of time, and who aren't romanceable and therefore don't have any Bhaalspawn baggage to try and address.
    >Instead bring back 2 romances, one of which is dead if they are romanced, and also Minsc, a human who by all rights should be dead so you have to concoct some tenuous bullshit to add him in.
I'm not particularly for returning companions since it's basically just offical fan-fiction, but if they must I don't see why someone like Korgan wouldn't have been a better choice of returning character (although even this would require some fricking about, you could in theory at least claim Korgan's crusade in the Underdark coincided with the events of BG3).

If the novels are canon than Bhaalspawn should be the Grand Duke in charge of the Flaming Fist in BG3.

Sadly, they also went with the Murder in Baldur's Gate where CHARNAME fought with Viekang, the Bhaalspawn that teleports when panicked, one of them killed the other, and the remaining turned into a Slayer and once killed Bhaal was reborn.

How exactly that makes sense, since CHARNAME gave up his divine essence, no one knows.

Dark Urge isn't an actual Bhaalspawn, he or she is something that Bhaal made from his own gore/blood, and this is why you have the urge to kill people all the time when no other Bhaalspawn was like that.

Yeah, and if you pick another race none of the racial reactivity makes sense. I did dark urge drow and had lots of interesting conversations about menzoberanzan with minthara. Get to the end, whoops! You were made by bhaals gore or whatever and you grew up here in the temple!

But I hear Minthara has nothing

She makes occasional comments when you bring her along. But as for having like an entire dungeon devoted to resolving her story? Nope. Her big thing was getting revenge on the people in moon rise tower. There’s also a very touching conversation near the end game where she acknowledges that you could have gutted her with the goblins, and she would have just been another nameless dead in my path to glory. But I didn’t.

So…yeah. But it was still great to have her with my evil party, telling Astarion to take what he suffered for, telling Shadowheart she was there with her, helping her become a chosen of her goddess. She fully backed the evil party.

I wonder if it's more canonically sound to try to play through a Dark Urge campaign entirely solo and just murder everything you can.

                Anonymous

Like the other anon said, the Dark Urge is not a Bhaalspawn in the normal sense, he is instead created by Bhaal from his own gore. He was created at the same time as the other Bhaalspawn, but likely kept in astral plane, as he didn't age.

FACT: The general populace are morons. There has literally never been anything that has been popular on a widespread scale that has been of genuine quality. Why do you think gatekeeping exists? If people had taste and didn't ruin franchises with their preferences, there'd be no GATE TO KEEP.

Have some respect for yourselves! You're no better than normies and their FOMO; "oh, my feed is full of this game, better play it so I can be part of the newest trend!" You vapid, vapid c**ts.

Everywhere I turn it's Shitdur's Gate this, Baldumb's Gay that. Who even the frick is Baldur anyway? Nobody gave a crap the first two times his gate opened. I feel like this is a gigantic psyop.

It's like the shitty Barbie movie which nobody was actually interested in but a combination of pandering and social media saturation created a social obligation to go and see it. I still haven't actually spoken to anyone in real life who's seen it, and I expect this game will be the same.

So stop fricking posting about it. 10-20 threads on every sodding platform I use. Evidently purchased.

Shall I be playing? I think not. I'll be sticking to my backlog of actual good games, thanks (I.e. things I've cultivated an interest for myself and not things the internet has told me to like.)

Yes. Gorion's ward is called just that sometimes the Hero of Baldur's Gate and the Bhaalspawn.
It assumes Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Dynaheir, Viconia and unnamed "others" weere in the party at some point. It also assume Jaheira and Minsc were present when they first defeated Saverok. There's a line about Jaheira, Minsc, Dynaheir Imoen and the Bhaalspawn living together for a while. Dynaheir died at some point after BG2 and before Minsc got turned into stone

The femoids in the writing team hate her for being the go to waifu of BG2. That's why they character assassinated her and made her hit the wall at mach speed. She was too agreeable for their taste. Womyn need to be confrontational, ugly, old, had the entire world run a train on them before you get your turn, or all of the above for western writers to deem them acceptable.

The frick are you smoking? That's exactly the kind of person Viconia was. If they wanted to shit on the fans they would've attacked Aerie, the actual virgin waifu.

      >Kivan and Cernd are a married gay couple now, despite the fact that they both had families. Also they're trying to expose Faldorn as a shadow druid even though she was already dead in BG2 100 years ago.

      >Imoen is an vampire because of Bodhi
Is that even possible in the game? Doesn't bodhi tried to turn your love interest? Did Imoen finally admitted she wanted to frick her not-brother?
Also, it's really hard to blame Larian on anything when Wizards is only rivaled by Marvel and DC in the competition to ruin their own IPs

Impossible. My CHARNAME married Viconia, they had a son, she was murdered and CHARNAME went on a crusade against the drow. Being vague about the name is meaningless when they aren't vague about everything else.

          says:
Jaheira and Minsc state very clearly that Irenicus is gone.
Sarevok was not a drug addict, he tried to save himself under CHARNAME's tutelage but relapsed due to his Bhaalspawn urges after CHARNAME was gone.
Other companions are not mentioned, Minsc just states vaguely that the chateau Irenicus party was the long-lasting one, but there were others and that Viconia stayed with CHARNAME for a short time.

    >Unlike the other elves, Drow are as fertile as goblins and orcs. They can have at minimum up to ten times the number of births as females from the other elven races. Multiple pregnancies of two three or even more common, but actual multiple births are very rare. The strongest of the fetus eliminates the others. It is not clear if this is a bizarre twist on the phenomena seen rarely in humans. Sometimes in humans the strongest twin takes all the placental nourishment and the other withers or if the unborn actually attack each other. The losing fetuses are absorbed into the mother's body so they cannot be examined to establish what actually happens. Another phenomena seen in humans is that a stronger twin can move about a lot more than a weaker one, and cause the second twins umbilical cord to become blocked.

    >When a fetus succeeds in eliminating a rival the mother experiences an intense rush of euphoria known as chad-zak. This is also unclear. It may be purely hormonal, or perhaps a warped form of the bonding other elven mothers experience with their unborn children.

    >The birth process is extremely painful, but not very dangerous for the mother. However she does not experience the usual rush of pleasurable hormones when the child is delivered, or the close bonding most mothers experience when the newborn infant is placed to their chest, only contempt at another tool and murderous hatred for a potential rival.

    Infancy and Early Childhood

    >To understand an orc is to know what drives it. All orcs crave carnage and absolute ruin, but to what end? Unlike drow, fully mature orcs do not commit acts of violence from a philosophical desire to foment evil for its own sake. The desires of an orc is less existential, more instinctual.

    >All Drow children have homicidal impulses before they can even walk and talk. Infants from noble family may be handed over to an older family member to be raised, but it is more common for very young Drow to be kept in a communal creche.

      Anonymous

      >This arrangement is not to care for the young; it merely makes it easier to weed out weaklings. Infants are encouraged to compete for food and space, and violence is rewarded.

      >Only the strongest and the cleverest survive. The weak are brutally tortured and killed, often with their throats ripped open by their teething and bloodthirsty rivals. Others suffer on Lolth's sacrifice altar, an arguably more merciful fate. Female Drow feel no maternal affection, and it would never occur to them to visit their infants. The occasional male Drow can be seen visiting his child, but this is seen as an indication of weakness in both father and child.

      >...students might be caged, doused with scalding water, flayed, stabbed with poisoned sticks, buried alive, or simply pulverized with fists and clubs. Such ill treatments scarcely seem to slow down these evil children, who have already proven themselves bullies, murderers, and psycopaths at home. Priestesses never fatally harm their charges; if they want them dead, it's wasteful not to sacrifice them.

      >School continues until the age of twenty, when adolescence officially begins. By this time, four out of every five students will have been murdered by classmates. Another one in ten will have been sent to the temple as food for Lolth.

        >Drow wanderers might, in exceedingly rare circumstances, claim the mantle of goodness. Such individuals exile themselves from their murderous communities in search of a peaceful life out of Lolth's reach. In most cases, they'll be consumed with shame and self-loathing, unable to fully shake the savagery of their formative years. A supposedly good drow might not gut you in the night as you sleep, but he'll still constantly wrestle with powerful instinctual impulses toward dishonesty, selfishness, treachery, sadism, and murder. In fact, so powerful are these innate drives towards evil that the number of non-evil drow on the Faerûn may be counted with two hands! The fact that surface-dwellers shun them at all costs makes life even more difficult for the infinitesimally tiny fraction of drow who sincerely seek redemption.

There's your classical Forgotten Realm drow.

Viconia sincerely followed most aspects of Drow culture and Shar is an evil nihilist deity that literally wants to snuff out all life.
The fact that Viconia can be turned into true neutral is fricking moronic. Not that BG2 writers cared, since Shar's relevance to the story starts and ends with Viconia's warcry.

I know you're baiting, but she loathes drow culture, and the reason why she's a cold b***h at times is because of how she's afraid that anyone she gets close to gets eventually hurt. The only place she's actually evil is in her character sheet, her actions and behaviour are more in line with a neutral character.

        >she's actually neutral bro
        >if you ignore how she leaves the party if you're too nice to other people

        >or how she's disgusted with surfacers
        >or how she hates surface elves so much she won't romance you if you're one
        >or that she's a clergywoman of a church that accepts only evil clergymen who worship an evil goddess that commands terrorism, assassinations, torture, brainwashing in order to gain power and eventually destroy the world
Nice neutral you got here pal. Let me guess: she's neutral because... she cared for one (1) person before they died?

          Anonymous

All "evil" characters leave if you're too nice, it's a function of the game and not reflective of the character's personality.

She hurts others with her words specifically to prevent them from getting close to her. She's using it as a shield, she's afraid of getting close to anyone after what happened to her brother.

As far as I'm aware, she literally fights one (1) good-aligned companion, namely Keldorn, who is the one to attack her.

She's disgusted with surfacers because of her history. She was not treated too well by them. Gangraped, buried alive. And then, attempted to be burned on a stake. Her attitude is perfectly rational.

I agree, her unwillingness to romance surface elf CHARNAME is a bit weird, but she does end up saving the city of Suldanesselar twice. See

          Retcon then

, she has the highest honours of a surface elven society, so I think it's fair to say that she's not entirely racist towards them.

Her faith towards Shar is a point of contention for sure, but it's evident that she's never been that much of an ardent worshipper. In fact, in the standard ending slide she has in BG2 it clearly states that she's perfectly willing to go against the wishes of her goddess if it pleases her.

She cares for more than one person, clearly. The first person she cared about was her brother, then she has cared for or at least trusted multiple different individuals and it's always ended up poorly for her, which is plenty of reason to be rather reserved towards others. But eventually she does learn to trust and appreciate others, and in ToB her interactions with other party members is far more amiable than previously.

But regardless of whether she's actually evil or not, I'd say that personality wise she's not very likely to be involved in a saturday morning cartoon villain plot to kidnap a kid, brainwash her and then use her to torment her parents. That's completely out of character for her.

Too much effort when you can just decide what's canon and morons will not only lap it up but actually defend you.

Shit, KOTOR 2 had no save importing but you were asked a few questions about what happened in 1 and that's still too much effort for modern game devs.

It's pretty obvious to me that they didn't want you to "transfer" your charname on purpose, they wanted to do their own thing while also using the actual canon, even Andromeda at least bothered to ask if your Shepard was male or female instead of just avoiding pronouns like morons

                Anonymous

Dev cycles are way too long now so people don't want to bother with it. If anything, they'd go the route of Witcher 3 where if you don't have a save then they just give you the option of "simulating" a save and lets you pick the big story beats instead of manually importing a save.
I always found it cool when games continue into each other and allow for shit like that. The Golden Sun games blew my mind as a kid where it legit just picks up where it left off but if I saw that kind of stuff nowadays, I'd just assume the game was unfinished and they split it to double the cost.

FF7Rebirth comes out later this year and I almost guarantee they won't have a save file carryover even though this would be a situation where it would make the most sense as it's a direct continuation of the previous game. The issue is FF7Remake allowed you to hit level 50 and gave you almost all the summons. If they allowed saves to carry over, there wouldn't be much left to do in the game.

                Anonymous

There’s not much to carry over in terms of choices for FF7R, it’s a bit of a kick in the dick if you grinded max level and items in the first part and lose that in the second but it’s not a major loss especially with all the ways you can speed that up

                Anonymous

For me it's less the choices and more just the feeling of carrying over your progress as a straight continuation. Hitting level 50 in FF7Remake and being reset to level 1 and losing all your materia in FF7Rebirth is going to feel really fricking weird.
I agree in the grand scheme it's not a huge issue and from a marketing perspective, they don't want to negatively impact someone that would (for whatever reason) buy Rebirth without playing Remake.

                Technology has, ironically, ruined gaming.
200 million dollar budgets, 6 or more years long dev cycles now mean games need to be safe and not take any risks, including trying to match up the graphics race, even if that means environments can't be well designed
No one is gonna bother carefully caring about player choices when the vast majority of buyers are either consoomers that don't care or casuals buying the popular thing

haha no, Ed Green didn't like bg 1 and 2 but bg3 was made with Mike Mearls (you know Jeremy Crawford's Co designer in 5e, more important than Crawford himself) on the team. So, we at least know bg3 is canon.
The name of the game in forgotten realms is stagnation so, the canon would have to be
            >Karlach returns to hell
            >Orpheus and the emperor end up dead somehow
            >lae zel exiled or dead
            >the dark urge, redeemed or dead
            >Gale is redeemed by mystra and cured letting him be a traveling archwizard (wotc love to suck off wizards) I suspect they will make canon dark urge redeemed because he's a sorcerer so more caster special treatment
            >shadowheart would be free because the shadow cursed lands do not exist outside of bg3 so we need to clean that up. Viconia also shouldn't be alive so having her redeemed, kill Viconia and slip back out to live her farm life fits best.
            >Wyll remains pacted to Mizora and continues as the blade of frontiers.
            >Minthara is a blatant afterthought and dead
            >Astarion becomes an ascended vampire
this ties up any loose ends the game may create while also leaving wotc room to have them make cameos as they so often love doing

Lol. The most absurd retcon ever. Kivan was going to live the rest of his life alone out of respect for Deheriana. He would wait for elven afterlife to eventually join his wife. That's the real canon.

        >Kivan and Cernd are a married gay couple now, despite the fact that they both had families. Also they're trying to expose Faldorn as a shadow druid even though she was already dead in BG2 100 years ago.
        >Imoen is an vampire because of Bodhi but still good
        >Jaheira is still with the Harpers despite parting ways with them in her personal quest
        >Sarevok became a drug addict living in the slums of Baldur's Gate until he refound religion by becoming a follower of Bhaal AGAIN despite what happened in ToB.
        >Valygar is still around hunting mages because of potions of longevity
        >Xan is now a troon whose gender just changes
        >Viconia is a priestess of Shar
        >Montaran and Xzar are back from the dead and Xzar is a demilich
        >Edwin is still around
        >Kagain worships Bhaal

For morons falling for the re-posted bait, all of these are from sources published by the Dungeon Master's Guild - they are explicitly non-canon, hence why they can include any crazy shit they come up with.

you mean like the blade of luck which lets you cast wish? unfortunately not only is it rare but again casting wish requires you to be very careful with your wording or it will fail or have horrific consequences. Additionally casting wish, through a scroll or otherwise taxes the caster, putting thenm effectively out of commission for at least a week. Also every time you use wish (again through an item or otherwise) there's a 1/3 chance you lose the ability to cast it forever because Mystra is a cold b***h

Karsus usurped Mystryl who was the first goddess of magic. He died shortly after, but his spell worked. Mystra was the second goddess of magic and she was killed by Helm during the Time of Troubles. The current Mystra is the third goddess of Magic and she was a human witch called Midnight (she was also Kelemvor's lover, for the record) who took Mystra's name after Ao deified her to ease the transition on existing clergy.

                >I don't know how gods in d&d work
                No u

Mystra was not Mystryl and acted very differently from the previous goddess of magic. Midnight was not Mystra and acted very differently from the previous goddess of magic. She even carried on her relationship with Kelemvor for some time and tried to forbid magic from being used for destruction before the entire rest of the pantheon complained to Ao.

Bane sprang forth from his son, singular, Iactu Xvim, but that was a special case. Iactu Xvim was not Bane and he acted very differently from the previous god of Tyranny while he was alive. This was one of his plans to get back from the dead if his scheme with the Tablets failed. All of the Dead Three had a plan to resurrect themselves, Bane and Myrkul had more than one, but that one plan of Bane's was the only one that worked.

This is not how god works. Mystryl is not Mystra is not Midnight. Bane, Baal and Myrkul were not Jergal and Cyric and Kelemvor are not the same persons as those who previously held their portfolios. Gods have distinct personalities and different persons act differently even when they hold the same powers.

tl;dr: You are full of shit

                Anonymous

incorrect, they all merge into a singular god so mystra both is and isn't mystryl because gods are weird like that. With midnight specifically yes when she became mystra she originally had a strong sense of mortal self dominating her personality but over time it became muted among the divine essence that composes the lady of mystery. So while the goddess of magic has been altered by its different mortal vessels its all ultimately been the same entity. Also you ignore the very first incarnation of mystra was also a goody two shoes moralgay just like midnight.

unfortunately morono previous edition lore isn't strictly canon, it is altered depending on the whims of wotc like how Shar and Selune creating the universe was retconned in Fizban's revealing that the material plane was actually created by the dragon gods and then sundered into the many crystal spheres we have

elegy of the first world is so based literally copying final fantasy 14 lore just to suck off dragons

yes they are people cope but the way forgotten realms lore is written is actually a lot similar to the elder scrolls
the gods are bizarre nebulous beings and nobody actually knows what the frick they are they're also highly schizophrenic

God's in the forgotten realms universe are more like the daedric princes in TES, can be destroyed and are definitely not infallible or omniscient in any way

so like the elder scrolls since the daedra and aedra are the same and swap places every kalpa

No, they're sisters. They were the first two goddesses created by Ao, Selune the goddess of Light and Shar the goddess of Darkness. They created the world together, along with Chauntea who begged for more light for life to flourish. Shar disagreed, Selune reached into the Elemental Plane of Fire to grab a ball of fire and make the sun. Shar attacked, Selune was losing because she had been weakened by the fire, Mystryl (and some other gods like Jergal) ended up getting born from their fight, Mystryl sided with Selune and put an end to the fight. Amaunator, the first god of the sun, also arrived at some point and Selune gradually relinquished parts of her portfolio to him and others. (She was the original goddess of love before Sune and still governs some aspects of love)
                >But Wizards!
WotC's retcons are moronic, you can frick off.

lmao, no. Gods are kinda like the Greek or Norse pantheon. They're not so different from mortals who were given immense power, and many of them even are ascended mortals.

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons is written from Bahamut's perspective, it's the closest most recent book we have of a direct first-hand retelling of a creation myth from a god

yes, there's even a church dedicated to both of them as the same being. Both selunites and sharrans condemn them as heretics and yet the proof of their truth is in the fact that they receive powers and blessings from Shar and Selune simultaneously

according to Ed Greenwood the current mystra is an amalgamation of all of them so no actually you're just wrong and word of god trumps your headcanon

To me this just reads that ultimately it's the DM's call for what you're able to do with Wish. It states there you can technically kill things with Wish unlike what

No. Wish can't kill anything actually. But you can wish for a 9th level conjuration spell to summon monster that will kill someone.

wish's effectiveness is based on how good your lawyerspeak is. Like making a genie wish

If you are talking about the wish spell then it is not for any random mortal, only the strongest magic users have access to it.

Good monk starts as fighter so he can wear heavy armor + shield. At level 2 and afterwards you take monk
      STR: MAX
      DEX: 10
      CON: lots
      WIS: optional

I played bg2 and I must say that Minthara is superior to her in every single way. Minthara also doesn't b***h about you being an elf, and I'm not going to play a filthy Human because I'm a Wizard only chad
Human is for Martialcucks that will never achieve Elven level of IQ to solve combat with magic or Orkish level of bruteness to be the best race for Paladin
Also Giths mogg them hard as well. Frick Humans and frick anti-High elf monkeys.

you're welcome to ignore the nulore at your tables, it's your own little world and you only need to see eye to eye with a handful of other people to make it work but please accept that it's all been retconned, written out and changed and that any media will present and follow the new lore just because it helps to get everyone (not autistic) on the same page

          >any media will present and follow the new lore
Ah yes, it's been very relevant in things like the movie and BG3 whether the world was created by Selune and Shar or some dragoBlack folk and taking the shitty nulore as gospel in all cases is not autistic at all.

for what it's worth the dragon lore doesn't contradict the old lore, it just adds another step before that and establishes the dragons as the life to predate all other life across the multiverse
shar and selune still created the world i guess, they just did it after invading bahamut and tiamat's fun fun play space and BTFOing them
