He was in Maximum Impact and he makes cameo appearances in modern KoF games as a background spectator

Just wasn't popular enough for SNK to bring back I guess. Many cool characters fall victim to this fate.

That's Media, she was in a Gamest Fatal Fury comic as Terry's girlfriend.

The same comic has Mecha-Geese cosplaying as Krauser (or Souther). It's pretty wild.

FF1 Richard wasn't all that special. Obviously, they tried to substitute him with Bob, but I guess he wasn't that popular in the end. he was kind of generic by SNK's standards. SNK crowd is all coomers anyway

To be honest, out of all the FF3 "ugly ducklings" Bob had it best, i can easily see him being added in the new FF game, unlike Jin bros, Franco and Sokaku.

Well yeah. But that's mostly because he was a young dude made to be a "cool" character. Hong Fu was an uninspired Jackie Chan ripoff, Sokaku looked like a SamSho background character. Jin bros do get cameos here and there though, I can see them maybe getting a chance as a novelty pick in some KoF DLC when they run out of ideas. Franco was in between—I think they were betting on him being popular, he was in the artworks, but he looks too much like Haggar and just kind of sucks.
FF gave SNK its most recognizable characters, but alas almost none of the later characters could live up to the old guard.

Sokaku is the best Real Bout character and Jin Bros are iconic and shows SNK's effort of going the shonen route as they did with KoF.

          >Sokaku is the best Real Bout character
I'm just saying is that he looks like a regular Japanese monk. His magical attacks don't even make sense in FF. all his appeal is that he's a discount bin Raiden (MK one, not SNK one).
          >Haven't kept up with the new game.
neither have I. not sure they revealed much beyond a teaser. anyway, it looks barely better than KoF XV, which looked worse than SFV. if it's a nu-SNK game with dumbed down gameplay, I'll pass.

Was Tung Fu Rue based on Master Roshi or are they both parodying something else from Asian pop culture. I think I’ve seen the “old guy suddenly becomes buff” archetype in a few fighting game rosters; Power Instinct comes to mind.

see, there's difference between just special effects / "chi" / fire attacks and summoning demons. FF is not a "fantasy" game and has no "magic" in it. it'd fit way better in Last Blade / Samsho, not in FF where the setting is realistic modern world. even "superpowers" like Kyo's flames wouldn't feel right in that setting.
              >We're talking people who can throw fireballs
this is generally explained, much like in SF. like, Terry and Andy use chi, Tung taught them how to do that. so it's "realistic" bullshit. Mai is a ninja, so she can use flames. not like she summons demons from outer world or something.

I think even Samsho is supposed to be in the same universe as FF, with the green goblin ninja hinted to be Mai's ancestor because they're both "Shiranui"

I don't think she has any canon explanation for her fire abilities, but I don't see how they could be anything but ninja magic if not some kind of "fire ki", cause it seems mystical, she even engulfs herself in flames for some attacks so it's not like it could be fire bombs or tricks

In Garou, Hokutomaru, who uses the same ninja style as Mai, uses wind and fire scrolls when doing his wind/fire uppercut supers. So Mai could be doing the same.

The Jin Bros use magic too.

I'm pretty sure Chonshu summons a dragon made out of energy in the RB games.

Probably because from day 1 SNK had the goal of trying to make games that had a more involved story and lore with connecting character relationships. FF and AoF were both more story focused for their time

      Anonymous

what said. I might remember wrong, but I think one of the guys who worked on SF1 wanted to take it into a different direction, more story focused. SF always focused on either blander martial arts / country stereotypes or freaks. KoF always went for likeable, "idol" characters.
I used to love them too, but over years I've kind of had enough. there's too much plot filler in the games. characters are always forgotten after their arch ends—see Terry, Ryo, Iori, K', etc.. the plot for FF hardly moved in RB, only gave us the "new gen" in Garou and then there was nothing for 20+ years. some guys just always get filler like Ralf / Clark and are basically a parody of themselves at this point. many people hate KoF for "gay weeb characters", I'm for one ok with them. the way bigger issue is how only a handful of game characters get any plot development game to game.
And now the KoF plot is just a shadow of its old self. Everyone gets revived, let's introduce another demon like in 1998 and XIII with a protag that no one likes and a "rival" Billie Eilish.

Real Bout was like where they stopped trying with the story as much for FF as they shifted that focus over to KoF it seemed, while RB was kind of like "well we told the story for Fatal Fury, now we're just content to keep making games with the characters you know and change things up a little each game".

I prefer the RB games for the polish and gameplay aspect alone, but the real main story is the original series, I mean what does Geese coming back really add to the narrative? Nothing really, I think they just did it cause popular character. RBS and RB2 don't really even attempt a story, and Dominated Mind which does continue it is kinda meh in terms of it

          Anonymous

          >they stopped trying with the story as much for FF as they shifted that focus over to KoF it seemed
that's too bad because in KoF, only the original characters get any real story. FF, AoF etc. only get filler endings or downright joke ones. so FF got no plot in either the mainline series or KoF.
pretty sad to think that for a company known for story / characters in their games, FF and AoF stories basically lasted just 2-3 games and ended around '95-96. except for Garou of course, which only gets a followup now. all KoF did was jokes about joe getting being a loser, takuma fooling around with mr. karate mask, and "will they won't they" with Andy / Mai and Ryo / King. to be fair though, seeing Iori want to fight Kyo for Nth time gets old too.
if they ended AoF and put FF on hiatus, could as well have continued their stories in KoF.

            Anonymous

Yeah, that's just kinda what happens though when you have a ton of characters and only one main plot though. It just feels a little worse because in KoFs case, a portion of the roster were already stars of their own games and now seem like background players in this series

Wasn't Real Bout like a sort of "dream Match" thing? Geese died in FF1 so him coming back is just not a canon thing.

geese was revealed to be alive and well in fatal fury 3
real bout 1 is canon insofar that geese dies for real, but the game itself isn't that heavy on story. even the arcade mode only has a line of dialogue from geese after every three fights
rb special and 2 are non-canon

It's weird, but Geese actually survived FF1 by doing a Shippuken in mid-air (really). He reappears in FF3 after the Jin scrolls, and he truly dies in Real Bout 1. The "classic" scene of Terry trying to grab Geese's hand and him refusing is from Real Bout (in FF1, he just kicks Geese out of the tower).
Geese falling and saying OOOWAAAAUGH - FF1
Geese falling while laughing - RB1

Real Bout Special and 2 are non-canon.

                Anonymous

Yeah GGs, was fun. Cheng is kinda weak but he's an ass to fight. His zoning range is pretty predictable considering his fireball isn't that good on block and it doesn't go fullscreen, so you could probably fish for Yama's reflect there. I also wouldn't do his pursuit unless it kills, considering Cheng has no reversals and you need him in the corner to bully him. Good stuff otherwise
I find RB1 more fun, but this game has much better balance. I'd probably like it more though if I learned someone who wasn't wack ass Cheng
