They're an interesting mechanic, especially in XD. You can't level them up or alter their moveset and you have to deal with reverse mode, but they get perks that make them able to match Pokemon several levels higher.
Interesting in concept, though a little sloppy in execution.
Pokemon isn't really built around swapping around your main 6 all too often, especially with the more punishing double battle system the Orre games have.
However, 100%ing the game involves purifying all the pokemon, which means a good chunk of post game is simply grinding with pokemon you never used or menuing around to apply herbs and massages.
I don't really have a fix other then simply "don't 100% the orre games". It's fun in the campaign, but drags on afterwards.
Agreed. I think they offer a cool mechanical trade off. On the off chance that they ever decide to revisit the concept, especially in a mainline game, I could see them including something postgame to help accelerate purification much more painlessly.
I also think it'd be interesting to see how they might faire in a competitive environment ala PoGo. There's more room for creativity in terms of trade offs, like maybe they have a slight boost to stats and access to Shadow moves which dominate the type chart, but they lose out on held items, egg moves, stay afflicted with status conditions longer, etc.. that kind of thing.

I'm a sucker for the concept of Pokemon rehabilitation, and the fact the Shadow "type" is super effective against everything makes them a bit more dangerous.

Gamefreak needs to understand that new pokemon aren't necessary. They could make an entire generation that's just new forms of old fan favorite pokemon and people would eat it up.
