They typically get paid just for making a video worth clicking on instead of for making a shit game get a positive review. This could lead to really clickbait obnoxious videos, but they wouldn't have an incentive to lie typically other than just having shit taste in games.

          >they wouldn't have an incentive to lie
If someone has over 10k subscribers and theyre playing a game before its generally available, they were paid to play it. And the only way to keep getting paid to play games early is to talk about how great they are.
Its not a coincidence that every homosexual streamer loves every single new game that comes out.

In other words, just ignore any large channels if you want actual opinions.

And also ignore all opinions that aren't about the gameplay, of course. No one givews a frick about how high res something is if plays like it was coded by drunken snakes.

If he was using a controller the aim assist alone would have done better then that. whoever this was simply seems to lack the motor skills to do two different things at once. It was a fricking trackball IIRC, maybe a trackpad. Still, it shows how fricking little they actually cared. It's a 30 minute gameplay promo and they couldn't even be assed to play it on a proper controller. Dude was probably half asleep in bed, too.

This isn't somebody playing a game because they want to and enjoy games, this is somebody playing a game because they fricking have to for work and don't give a shit. Somebody blackout drunk would play better than this. DarkSydePhil consistently plays better than this in any game he bumbles through.

Yeah, imagine. 1400s poland, someone has a Black person baby from a one night stand. 1400s, extremely christian poland. Im sure that lady and her baby both would have been embraced with open arms by the community, and not either shunned or killed.
Imagine being a "historian" and sitting around all day dreaming about Black folk wandering into white homelands and raping someone. And then imagine being a journalist and seeking this guy out for a quote.
Games "journalists" and the people who read this shit need to go extinct already.

there were moors in europe like zerco but obviously they weren't an ubiquotus feature in every bumfrick village, if they wanted to be historically accurate then they could have a few moor characters in very specific circumstances, but obviously they'll take it to "there was a moorish jester in a court at one point so every village has to have 5 afro-american characters" (yes I know afro-american characters make no sense in a medieval european setting but you know that they won't make them historically accurate moors and instead make them black lives matter activists)

aren't they talking about kingdom come deliverance? which was set in the czechia in the 15th century, by then there was trade with arabs in that region, you could find some historically accurate explanation as to why there's a moor there, if you really really really want to have some black characters, granted their depiction wouldn't be very bright, they'd probably be slaves or mercenaries, it's just silly to think that it would be a very prevalent thing

kingdom come isn't too far in time from yasuke either, if there were blacks in japan by that time (obviously not many but some through slave trade ended up there too) then it's not super surprising if there were some moors in czechia or poland too through slave trade in southern europe and britain, placing "medieval europe" in time is always a finicky thing, especially since the renaissance is also included in "medieval" most often than not, so "medieval" can span between the 2nd century and the 19th century pretty much, after the ancient times when rome basically fell into pieces and before the industrial revolution, but obviously there's huge differences between 5th century remnants of the roman empire, 10th century newly formed kingdoms and 15th century when you pretty much had global trade and cannons already, if we're talking about blacks in the 5th century you could have some remnants of the roman empire with ties to african provinces that did bring blacks from africa, in the 10th century maybe not so much since kingdoms became pretty isolated, then in the 15th century you could easily have blacks even in japan through the extensive trade with the arab world

                Anonymous

That was nearly 200 years later, when a black guy showed up in japan as part of a crew of portuguese traders and missionaries. It wasnt like there were blacks roaming all over japan either. The most powerful warlord in all of japan, a guy who had been all over the entirety of japan conquering it, didnt even understand what he was, he just thought he was dirty. In all likelyhood, that single Black person was the only one on the entire island at that time.
Sure, you can explain ONE black guy maybe showing up somewhere in europe. The reality is until relatively modern times, like mid-1800s, most people not growing up near africa or near slaves would live their entire lives without seeing a single Black person or even knowing they exist.

Does the average gamer even read reviews?
Feels like most people can just find a youtuber or streamer they like and watch them play a game and easily figure out if I'd enjoy it or not. I don't need to read a blog post when I can actually see someone who is somewhat competent at the game just play it and talk about their experience.

      Anonymous

Some people read the review after looking at the rating. It's the rating that people use and b***h/shitpost about. Think like the game awards, or rather any awards show. It's all bullshit.

I've never read a game review in my life, if people talk about a game and I think it seems interesting then I'll watch the trailers, if it looks good then I'll look for gameplay videos or streams to see how the game plays, if it looks good then I try it and then decide whether it's shit or not

This isn't the best place to ask a question like that. But youtubers and streamers are often just as bad, the 1% that are honest and competent at games get single-digit views.

        Anonymous

Eh, maybe if you watch top tier popular youtubers/streamers but there's plenty of more niche ones that give reasonable opinions.
And most games will have a silent playthrough or whatever showcasing the game, so you can always watch that.

That's basically what I said, you really think most average gamers are going to dig that deep rather than just go for those big popular names who will miss any and all subtleties and who never go indepth with any game they play? Though frankly no one does that anymore.

The most popular YouTube game reviewer is Jake Baldino

I don't know that name, though I can't say I keep up with specific names and you can already tell I don't put much stock in reviews or other's gameplay anymore, if anything I learn more about games by noticing the myriad things they're clearly not doing.

I honestly prefer hearing recommendations by word of mouth. The average journo gives no shit about some of the games I've ended up enjoying while praising games that ended up being broken pieces of shit. It's obvious that so many are either directly paid to say good things, or are scared of being taken off the good boy list for saying something negative.
Also, if I'm looking at a review of a game, I don't want people b***hing about their political agendas. They b***hed to no end about being able to date adults in persona 5 instead of letting the player be gay.
There was a time years and years ago that I enjoyed going on Kotaku. They would show interesting upcoming games, rank good older stuff, and just talk about the industry. It was cool when they talked about localization changes similar to youtube channels like Region Break do now. Their content is garbage now when I look at an article and they hide most comments because they go against the reviewer. I pretty much only go there if I want a summary of the announcements after some game expo and even then they add in links to all their other articles with shitty opinions.

If I wanted to learn more about a game like Hades, I can just look up a gameplay video on youtube showing the average run and get a decent idea on how it actually plays and what a average person would actually do in it. You can easily just skim through the video and get a rough feel of how the game works.
If I wanted something more in-depth, I can easily find someone on youtube who is doing a more detailed review who is actually interested in the game and likes the genre who can give me a nuanced view of the game. Or just watch a streamer I like and see how they're experiencing the game.

If someone posts their opinions professionally, they should be required to show how much time and how far they have gotten in the game. An easy way to see what scores they have given other games would also be useful. So many give dishonest reviews where it's clear they either didn't play much of the game or they suck at video games and don't understand the mechanics. Sometimes I see reviews where it is absolutely obvious, like someone complaining about the soundtrack in a game where the music ramps up when you are doing well and keeping up combos.
That still doesn't fix the fact that someone who looks at lots of games on a regular basis will have really different expectations than typical for things like wanting everything to be subversive or hating a game with a long intro.

The only advantage a journo has over the average person or youtuber is that they can get a game early and put out a summary of its pros and cons before everyone else. That's the only pro. Consider that now some companies also give early copies to streamers/youtubers and other companies give review embargos and this advantage means almost nothing now.
The average person can't make an informed decision of whether an upcoming game is going to be worth getting and all these early reviews are by people who have to say good things to keep getting games early. You end up basically going in just as blind but now having to hope some dumbass has actually played the game, knows how to play video games, and genuinely liked it. Then the newest pokemon game or whatever gets amazing reviews but is a buggy mess but you already bought it.

Examining Ethical Concerns in Game Journalism: A Critical Look at IGN

While discussing the impact of AI on game journalism, it is essential to address broader concerns within the industry, including the issue of ethical practices. One prominent player in the game journalism landscape is IGN, a popular gaming media outlet. However, it is important to critically examine their practices and shed light on potential ethical concerns that have arisen over the years.

IGN has faced criticism regarding potential conflicts of interest in their game reviews. Some argue that their close relationships with game developers and publishers may influence the objectivity and impartiality of their reviews. While IGN maintains that they have strict guidelines and policies to mitigate such biases, the perception of favoritism persists, damaging the credibility of their reviews. Game journalists must prioritize transparency and avoid any perception of impropriety to maintain the trust of their audience.

Another area of concern is the integration of advertisements within IGN's content. Native advertising, where promotional content is seamlessly integrated with editorial content, blurs the line between objective reporting and advertising. Critics argue that this practice can mislead readers by presenting promotional material as unbiased content, compromising the integrity of the journalism. It is crucial for game journalists to maintain a clear distinction between editorial and promotional content to uphold journalistic ethics.

      Anonymous

Diversity and representation have become crucial aspects of modern journalism. However, some have accused IGN of lacking diverse voices in their coverage. It is important for game journalism outlets to prioritize inclusivity and ensure that their content reflects the diverse gaming community. By fostering an environment that encourages diverse perspectives, game journalists can present a more comprehensive and inclusive portrayal of the gaming landscape.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, game journalism must also adapt and address ethical concerns that arise. While IGN remains a popular outlet, it is essential for them and other game journalism organizations to critically assess their practices and strive for transparency, objectivity, and inclusivity. By addressing conflicts of interest, clearly distinguishing between editorial and promotional content, and amplifying diverse voices, game journalists can strengthen the integrity of the industry and foster a more trusted relationship with their audience. It is through a commitment to ethical journalism that the game journalism industry can continue to thrive and provide valuable insights to the gaming community.

ChatGPT does about as well at writing an article as your typical journalist does, and despite it's blatant biases on certain subjects it probably won't go into a tirade about how Bayonetta is a symptom of the cisheteronormative patriarchy, or whatever the frick.

It's not like journos play the games or are any good at them anyways, if anything a GPT3 review would be more likely to be accurate just because it'd be copying and reinterpreting reviews from people that actually played the game, like from forum posts or Steam reviews.

Bayonetta, a video game character known for her sexualized appearance and provocative poses, can be seen as a symptom of the cisheteronormative patriarchy within the gaming industry. Her design caters to the male gaze, perpetuating the objectification of women and reinforcing traditional gender roles. By portraying Bayonetta as a hypersexualized, powerful femme fatale, the game appeals to a narrow definition of femininity that aligns with male fantasies and desires. This portrayal not only reinforces harmful stereotypes but also marginalizes and alienates female gamers who seek more diverse and empowering representations in video games.

IGN are infamously bad at Sonic games. The Sonic Unleashed reviewer said the game had unresponsive controls, to depict this he jumped over a dash ramp. The only unresponsive thing in regards to journos are their brains or more accurately the severe lack of one.

The only certainty with game journos is that they will always find new lows.

The most interesting thing is that shitty critics can't hide their incompetence behind subjectivity like they do with movies, series, books, etc.
Video critics are more like a critic of fishing equipment, or motorcycles, or cars, or tools, these guys necessarily need to know what they are talking about, they can't hide their incompetence behind intellectual masturbation like critics do with art.
That's why in the video game world frauds can't fool many people like they do in the arts in general.

      Anonymous

It's more interesting than that because that element of subjectivity does exist in games, but it's not the entire scope of it and it can be called into question based on how they understand the rest of it. It's what makes their attempts to hide behind it even worse to those who recognize it, but people do unfortunately get fooled and the idea of how games are approached has shifted. Or it'd be more accurate to say a massive audience now playing games have a different, stagnant idea of approaching them.

A journalist needs to give a shit about their medium first. 'Good writing' is just code for an english major out of their second job.

I'd rather read some random dude's ravings whose been playing games since the beginning than some 'journalist' who always has to mention how 'they'll probably fix it in an update' every essay.

does anyone remember the game that journo played on easy and then complained that the story was kinda anti-climactic, the dev then explained that the final mission could only be unlocked on normal or higher difficulty and the journo just doubled down and refused to admit he only played the game on easy?

There are quite a few examples like that, I'm pretty sure Sonic Frontiers was one of them too.

It was called Pixeljunk Shooter or something like that, I never played it myself but I do remember that. It was worse though, he kept the review exactly as is except deleting the part that he was specifically called out on that reveals he must have rushed it on Easy. Someone's probably got the screencap I'm sure.

When is the last time game journalists were actually useful? The official game/studio social media page and random fans on youtube are better info sources than actual game journalist websites at this point.
It's not 2013 any more, I don't need to go read gameinformer for their exclusive interview, I don't need to go on IGN to see everything announced at microsoft's E3 showcase because the full vod is up on youtube right away with chapters and it doesn't take 2 hours to load in 144p anymore, I just don't see any reason for game journalism to exist anymore
