Thoughts on this game? I'm getting pretty bored. The game is gorgeous and the world is super immersive but it's full of set pieces that are getting tediously boring. The, "puzzles" were cool for the first few times but slowly walking/jumping through the levels and killing a few zombies with really meh-tier gunplay is just not doing it for me. I wish the shooting was more on par with pavlov, you could run, and there was more firefights with AI that actually try to flank you.

Even Valve themselves admitted that Alyx had to be moron-proof and comfortable for all players. That means that VR players used to Pavlov will probably find Alyx lackluster in shooting. The AI is intended to make mistakes/do things really slowly for the beginners too. Maybe next game.

They lobotomized the AI for the Combine soldiers too. It's really noticeable when you throw a grenade at them, they just stand still for few seconds like idiots.

Yeah, it's really obvious when you see them fight other AI like zombies and stuff. I just wish Valve made like an EZ modo for the secondaries like how it is how and the hard/normal modes to be normal.

I just don't think having exceptionally smart AI like this is good for gameplay. If AI instantly bolts when they see you throw a grenade, grenades just feel worthless. Given you're actually throwing the grenade with your hand and learning the physics of the world, I don't see a problem with the AI doing little to avoid grenades.

You have to give up on the idea that this is an action game, then it's pretty great. Think of it as a survival horror.

Or install this one mod with more encounters + enemy difficulty bump. I think it even had slight tweaks on types of enemies, like heavies with extra force field armor, whatnot. Alyx modding scene is really underappreciated, there's so much stuff in there, small things like gravity gun, and then even total conversions like pic related

Yeah, some people made campaign levels out of the game like Levitation which is pretty good.

If you play other VR shooters, look up if they have options for Virtual Gunstock. What it'll do is make it so the ironsight and the barrel are always aligned so it's easier to aim.
I think there's option like it in pavlov, contractors and for SP games like Into The Radius (this game is a bit spooky but worth it).
Otherwise if you want casual shooting then I don't think there's anything better than H3VR yet.

Here's how you play Alyx and have fun

    >Teleport exclusively
    >Have enough room to run around
    >Remember that you're not teleporting your player position
    >Instead you're teleporting your rooms position in the game world
    >Teleport so you can physically open and walk through doors
    >Teleport so you can physically run and drop into cover
    >Etc

Congratulations, you will now be having fun

I had much more fun with HL2 and its episode than all of Alyx. Only bad parts where the boat and buggy sections because you need really strong VR legs for those but at least there's actual gameplay.

This one surprised me quite a bit. I expected jank-ass crude port where gun reloads itself with a button press, turned out they've put some serious effort into make HL2VR feel like a proper VR game.

Piggy back question but I saw your Alyx modded video up above. Is there a LOT of modded content available for alyx? I've only played the pirated version so I got no access to it and I don't really feel like shelling out 60$ for a base game I didn't enjoy.

Also, apparently HLA wasn't on sale for a while, and some steam sale event happens very soon, so I'd expect it to go -60% again. I'd assume you don't dislike it enough to say it's not worth twenty:

Still only the HL2 weapons, or have they patched the black mesa weapons in yet?

Are there many chill maps just to hang around in? I downloaded one that's a portuguese town recreation. It's so chill I've logged more hours just hanging out there drinking gin and listening to music than on the actual game.

              Anonymous

Doubt it, chilling out in pleasant sceneries is VRC territory. That being said, I've only tried a bunch of mods (first webm with john wick inspired shooty, extra difficulty with more encounters and tweaked enemies, gravity glove that allows you to deal physical damage with objects, stuff like that), so while I doubt you'll find what you're looking for, you're free to look through content.

But you probably want VRChat. You can stay in private and just explore worlds if you're negatively aligned towards overall game.

                Anonymous

VRChat tends to be janky as shit because the more detailed worlds are too slow and the less detailed worlds look like shit. My favourite experiences in VR so far have just been that one mod map, and a Blade Runner VR fangame that simulates Deckard's apartment.

I just want relaxing experiences without some yoga shit tied to it.

Oh yea, played it. It's quite pleasant, plus floaty kayak physics compliment overall chill vibe very well. Didn't got many hours in there, but for what I saw, anon should definitely give it a shot. It's polished, it's pretty, and unless you're racing, game mechanics are really good to just sit down and have a nice day. Wish there would be any good point in exploration, other than just exploring for the sake of it, but can't have it all, i guess.

Valve should remake half-life 2 and it's episode for VR. Heck, it could even be a slightly altered timeline if Valve wants to remove the boat parts. Revisiting HL2 with VR in mind would be great (without dumbing down the gameplay of course).

some of the valve vr devs are literal casuals that thinks teleport locomotion is the only way to design games

          Anonymous

I don't know why they're so adamant on keeping the teleport locomotion when VR players have already got used to the control at this point. I understand if they keep them as accessibility option but the thing is they designed their game around that.

I do think that teleport should be an OPTION much in the same way someone would use low graphics settings on a bad PC (in this case it's having a bad brain that can't cope with VR) but you wouldn't catch me using it. I'm already used to doing backflips in Sairento VR.

I think there were flashes of brilliance as a survival horror game and some of the non copypaste electrowand minigame puzzles. The one time in the game where I really thought, Ok this is actually good, was when I was flying by the seat of my pants throwing things in the jeff section. valve obviously did not want to go to the level of pacing required for straight vanilla combat to work very well. If valve were to expand on the jeff section and release a full survival horror game I'd be stoked.

I liked Jeff level and it's novel for VR but man, it's not exactly replayable when you found out about its quirk and all. I suppose it's very quick to clear at least if you know what you're doing.

        Anonymous

yes, I agree. Jeff sufficed for a small segment but they'd actually have to create an AI that wouldn't be solved so easily in a full game.

Go onto workshop and download City Escape (episode 1 and 2 are great but 1 has a slow start) and that other Hitman mod that's on there. They're both better than the Alyx Campaign. Yes, the pacing in Alyx is atrocious.

      >Yes, the pacing in Alyx is atrocious.
Can't argue with that. The game spent almost 40% of its game on a goddamn sewer system for crying out loud. As if Route Kanal level in Half-Life 2 is Valve's favorite level and they want to make an entire game out of it.

I felt the same for the first half of the game. It was like a bad dream where they were shitting all over my half life memories. The second half mainly jeff and the ending made up for it though imo

Alyx is the most painstakingly boring linear corridor shooter with useless toys sprinkled all over.
Boneworks much better. You have actual platforming, climbing and physical objects, planks, crates etc. usage of which are actually necessary in getting past obstacles. Reminds me of Portal but more free-form. You can grab and punch enemies to defend.
I didn't finish either of the games though, I rather spend my limited physical energy on Beat Saber.

My thoughts are it was made by known scammers who commit false advertising and fraud.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
