Thracia 776

I keep hearing people say this is THE fire emblem game. It's really hard and the story is good. I'm considering playing it but does it still hold up?
I have only played 3 Fire emblem games - FE7, Echoes And 3H. I only liked Echoes.

Play Genealogy of the Holy War first.
Thracia is a midquel, happening between Chapter 6 and 8 of FE4, so you'll be missing some context about what's happening on the grand scale.
And yes, it absolutely holds up.

Got it, same question for FE4 then. Does it hold up?

depends on what you mean by hold up, it's certainly an experience

        Yeah.
It has a lot of weird and unique stuff if you come from the newer FEs (double attacks can only be done by characters with specific skills, units can't freely trade between each other, etc) but it's a really good game.
Also one piece of advice is that the maps in FE4 are absolutely gigantic, which means that foot units get constantly left behind by your horses and fliers. It translates that if you don't have a mount, you're basically not worth using.

          oh frick

To clarify on mounts in FE4, it only matters if you have a horse or not outside of one chapter in each generation. Fliers don't benefit from terrain bonuses so they end up falling behind your cavalry due to road tiles. You can still do some very silly things with a flier but cavalry are way more flexible.

there's always multiple things to do at any given moment in all the maps, if you aren't using your footmen for one objective while your horses are doing another then you're playing very poorly

nta but since I finished FE4 recently, I can give a good answer

In a way, it's like 3H where the flaws start seeping in on a replay because of questionable gameplay design but if it's your first time, it can be enjoyable.

3H and Genealogy are similar in a ton of ways.

If you beat it and went for a replay you must have enjoyed it. I'm not gonna replay, there are other games to play

No not at all don't listen to those other guys it's an absolute slog

Most of its difficulty comes from inexperience and blind playing. There's also some obnoxious rng like movements starts and staff accuracy but it's mostly cheap tricks the game pulls to waste your time.

Staff units are also obnoxiously dominant, where it just becomes a game of using your overpowered staves to counter the enemy's or get past the map's annoying gimmick.

Can you not beat it without a guide? I heard it's hard but not bullshit hard.

I mean if the game is the complete package. Good story, good gameplay, music ect, and it holds up today. Echoes left a really good impression on me after how well it looked and felt to play. FE7 on the other hand felt like baby mode not worth playing. Even on hard.

You can, there's just a lot of cryptic/random shit over the game that was definitely meant to sell guides back in the day.
Here's an example, this is how fog of war looks like in Thracia.

Weren't some of the mechanics actually explained in the manual for the game?

            Anonymous

Depends on what you mean specifically. The manual certainly doesn't give you the specific recruitment criteria for Xavier, but it does cover most of the other stuff people would probably describe as 'bullshit' like having a warning about how escape maps work in regards to Leif.

it's a very good game don't get me wrong, but at times it really tests your patience, not anything to do with difficulty, but managing your army is borderline insane at times, it will take 20+ turns to pass through certain choke point, every time you see mountain areas that need to be crossed you better be prepared with something on your second monitor to watch on your second monitor or something, even with emulator speedup, also shit like picrel

Are these the fabled escape chapters? What exactly am I looking at here?

          Also how is the story?

That's just a fort you have to take, to get your units up there you have to navigate a zig zag hill path that only had 1 square of width all the way up, you have to make a conga line to get to the fort and beat the boss, on the enemy turn the enemy fort just vomits like 10 units, which occupy space of course so you need to spend a whole afternoon finding open squares to kill enemies to free up spaces to fit your other units so that maybe you can chip the boss with ranged attacks from the side

the story is very good, I highly recommend at least a full playthrough, it's a one of a kind game

Well I have to play a "real" fire emblem game or else people will laugh at me for being an awakening baby or whatever. So I'm doing it. But I'm not using guides. A game should be playable without one or it's a bad game.

It's still the best FE after all this time and it's the standard that all FE games should aspire to.

Nah , this game is nearly impossible to beat blind and will deliberately try to frick you over numerous times , especially at the end , the features in this game is ahead of it's time but it's still bad game design haven.
If you still want to play it I'd recommend to always buy door keys as soon as possible , this game will frick you over if you don't
