Linux is now the second most used gaming OS on PC!

  7. 10 months ago

There are fewer games made natively for Linux now than at any time in the past decade. With Proton, even developers who traditionally made native ports figure there's no need anymore, since hey, Proton will just magically make it work. Windows gaming isn't going anywhere.

      Anonymous

Really why don't Linux gamers find this as serious issue?

        Anonymous

        Because it's a non-issue for gamers.

        >Linux gamers

        Anonymous

Because it doesn't really currently matter. Worst case scenario, Proton continues to exist and everyone is happy. Best case, Proton gets a larger install base over to linux, which over time will pressure devs to make native ports or at least to make sure their games run well on Proton. It sounds bad that there aren't native ports but what does it actually mean that's bad? Linux has never had a substantial amount of native ports anyways.

          Anonymous

It's like asking someone if they're worried that retro games don't natively run on their pc.
This has literally never been a concern for gamers, only a niggling concern for free software advocates and shitposters pretending it's a concern.

Proton is great and has no downsides for people who just want to play games on Linux. It's a nightmare for Linux evangelists who have fever dreams of Linux overtaking Windows as a gaming platform.

          Anonymous

You're close, the people you're thinking of want linux to take over as THE platform, which, while it would potentially be less of a bad situation as what there is now with windows, given there's competing distributions part of that mindset is coming with bad intentions.

windows has to emulate windows to be able to play games

  9. 10 months ago

This is kinda true but its a little silly because essentially 99% of gaming on linux depends on a compatibility layer that runs Windows executables. Its not like devs are suddenly making more native ports. Essentially it all hinges on people making products for Microsoft's platform and then nerds figuring out how to run it elsewhere. Still things are changing. I myself moved entirely over to Linux a year and a half ago. First time I haven't bothered jumping back and forth between OS's in the 15 years I've used Linux. The amount of support online has exploded too due to the Steam Deck and a lot of people are finding out that Linux really isn't crazy to use. Every OS has quirks, Linux has a few more because of the freedom it gives you. Generally though if you use stable distros with extensively developed DEs its really not a big deal like it used to be. I would say anyone who grew up with lets say Windows XP or even 7 should be fine using modern Linux. Occasionally you might get your hands a little dirty to fix an issue but its nothing unreasonable. Its only really been since Windows 10 that you essentially never have to think about anything ever and that leads to its own set of problems.

I am honestly surprised they haven't released a home "console" version of Steam OS, something like picrel. A Mini 6800HS PC with 12cu RDNA2 graphics designed to run at 45w, bundled with a Steam Controller 2.0 based on the Deck controls. Something like that could do 1080p AAA gaming in the same way the Deck can 800p.
They could probably price them the same as the Deck, the chip would be a little more but you don't need a screen or battery so it works out. I am seeing a lot of Mini Pc's pretty cheap on Amazon.

10 years ago DXVK didn't exist, and wine was fairly ass.
Plus them putting out the steam machines was integral to getting that guy obsessed with 2b's ass to unfrick codeweaver's bullshit and get linux gaming to the point it is now, where virtually everything but some shitty fomo multiplayer games with malware tier anticheat work.

        >They did that like 10 years ago and it flopped horribly
They're is a big difference between Steam OS and iGPU's between now and then. Since there are chips that use the same architecture as the Deck but more powerful it shouldn't be that hard.

        >I am honestly surprised they haven't released a home "console" version of Steam OS
        >Bundled with a Steam Controller 2.0
        There's your answer.
The Steam Controller 2 isn't ready yet.

I am looking hoping for one, the previous one lacked a dpad and R stick.

        >They could probably price them the same as the Deck
Not really. IMO. This being more of a plug and play, would compete with typical consoles, as a result it would be a hard sell at $400.

Since they sell on Steam they'll be looking for people who want a console like experience for their Steam games, anyone they can drag away from the PS/XB eco-systems would just be a bonus. They could probably go as low as $350 too.

Completely different landscape now. People aren't all of a sudden talking about video games on Linux for no reason. 10 years ago it was a complete waste of time.

Do you really think Microsoft gives a frick how you play their games just as long as you pay them?

They wasted development time on Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite to intentionally break both on linux, so, yes. They do give a frick how you play their games, even if you pay them.

windows could make negative income and they would still fight tooth and nail to keep their dominance because having a total chokehold monopoly on an entire platform in extremely valuable

Mint is outdated I have no idea why people still recommend it but also your problems are abnormal. However I believe you because I had other bizarre issues with Mint on my friend's PC even though everyone claims it just werks. I unironically have had a smoother experience with Arch than Mint although that would be a rarity. Anyways there are better just werk stable distros good for games that are actually kept up to date.

      >slow boot
      extremely weird
      >slow file search structure
there are pretty fast methods for this on linux but due to how ntfs works nothing really beats Everything on Windows. But things like mlocate work quite well or for GUI use Fsearch which is an Everything clone.

      >minecraft java conflicts
Yea this can be a giant headache. Its usually fine but last I tried this (maybe like last year or early this year) I went through some insane hoops to get certain modpacks working. However I have played Minecraft Java off and on for like 12 years on Linux and have never had issues with it until very recently.

      >hardware conflicts
would need to know more but these things can happen. Happens with any OS switch though. Some hardware is good on mac os, not on windows, and vice versa. Same applies to Linux. Also my experience with Nvidia was interesting and I don't see people bring it up much. I had a 970, and had so many weird problems with it on Linux. However my friend has a 3080 and his experience was way smoother. I'm convinced nvidia's linux drivers are substantially better for newer gen cards. my basic desktop experience was shitty on a 970 which is ridiculous. Whether it was KDE or using something lightweight like a tiling WM, I had awful general performance. I ended up going AMD because even newer nvidia cards have their share of issues but I would say Linux is very usuable if you have newer cards and a waste of time on older gens if you have nvidia.
      >zip files and other stuff meant to work in linux no longer do
I have no idea what this means, something is very fricked up with your install
      >don't even attempt wine/bottles from how bad steam even loads
once again not sure what this means because steam is more or less the same on all OS's now.

Overall I am certain all of your issues are solvable except maybe hardware conflicts but I would need to know more. These are not normal linux issues.

It booted my x99 system slower than hacked windows, had more screens and notices, not including login.

The minecraft was bullshit. I went in saying "yeah its MADE for linux" and had terrible stuttering and streaked-textures.

Hardware was USB and drive issues, related to slow boot and file-system. I started with the same NTFS file structure, swapped my drives over to EXT4, and found no speed increase, changed back after.

Zip files infuriated me. Files that work fine on windows come back as corrupted or empty, or incorrect password.

The linux mint forums were nice for help, but it all came down to "try it on windows and report back". I just went back to windows and never reported.
