Conceptually he's right but ultimately egs is no better than steam. It's just another shitty drm where you own nothing. If he toppled a monopoly, nothing would improve.
More like nobody gives a fricking shit about an expanse game, batman audience doesn't want visual novels because they're not the same walking dead normies.
Wolf among us 2 is the only thing they got going honestly, they just make ass games with ass ips and fumble if they get a good ip, insist on episodic shit when that fad has looooong since passed, and their writing just isn't very good, or animation, or voice acting outside wolf among us, or anything its all pretty mid usually
I like how even the journo is subtly saying "wtf is Sweeney smoking" just by saying one word. That 'supposedly' right there just shows they're not just blindly going along with whatever he has to say.
He literally thought that he does not need to give a frick about user experience because devs and publishers who jump ship would force gamers to buy only from Epic Game Store.
He is now butthurt because he actually has to do something else than have business meals with other corporate executives to access consumer wallets.
That's what Steam did though. You'd buy a game on CD and it would force you to install the piece of shit that was Steam. Then later, Steam introduced regional pricing for all games (not just for what localizer gatekeepers decided to offer) and got a lot of cash from third-worlders
valve making their own games exclusive to steam is vastly different than epic taking third party developers with exclusivity contracts; but you already knew that this argument has been made a hundred times but you still post FUD nonsense cuz you're a fricking chink shill.
>this homie never sent a letter in telegraphese before
frickin zoomer, you pay per character for a telegram; you always cut the fat. you're a thousand years too early to be talking to me about telegrammetry.
lolwut. so? if i was sending a strongly-worded letter to my nemesis, i wouldn't skimp on it, i'd go full-hog and really let that fricker know what i was thinking of him.
>That's what Steam did though. You'd buy a game on CD and it would force you to install the piece of shit that was Steam. Then later, Steam introduced regional pricing for all games (not just for what localizer gatekeepers decided to offer) and got a lot of cash from third-worlders
The publisher chose to do that, not steam. The publisher decided not to put anything on the disc steam has nothing to do with those decisions and never did. Why are you blaming Steam for things that publishers and developers chose to do?
That's what I always say, this autist is UNABLE to put himself in the shoes of a consumer, only the developer. Maybe he has never bought a game in his life or had the pleasure of playing a video game to understand what people feel when they decide to spend money to access this type of entertainment.
I hate how he cleverly framed all of his propaganda as supportive of "developers" when he was really only targeting PUBLISHERS. The people that actually make the decisions on how and where to sell a product. To say what Timmy Tencent is doing is skeezy, is an understatement. He was drawing lines with the work of developers to try and disrupt steam so his store could become the new steam. He kept talking about taking out the middleman but he was negotiating solely with the middleman and a lot of developers ate shit because of it. They had no choice where their game ended up, they didnt' finance it and had no publishing rights to it. Obviously most devs want maximum eyeballs on their work, I can't imagine many developers enjoying PC exclusivity wars. The only guy who seemed positively enthusiastic was Randy Pitchford.
absolutely no developers ate shit because that's not how fricking game dev works you r/frickepic shitposter, the devs NEVER have a say in where their games go, but you're the kind of moron who thinks a Tencent investment means complete chinese ownership so yeah
It's a shame too cause original Battle.net was pretty comfy. Yeah it was "another" launcher but at least it worked exactly as it needed to. Which is a lot more then could be said for Uplay, Bethesda or fricking Minecraft's launcher. Now everything except Steam is so bloated. And even Steam isn't immune to it.
>He's right tho? Battle.net worked fine for 2 decades. Consoomer will use whatever is required to get their slop.
Battle.net only worked because of the perceived value of the blizzard brand, once they started to add activision slop it broke the idea that it was a premium game only service, once blizzard started releasing terrible fricking game after terrible game (mainly awful wow expansions) it started to break the blizzdrones out of their stupor. Don't get me wrong there are still a ton of mazed morons playing blizzard games but since most of them are awful engagement simulators that are only concerned about metrics and not how fun they are to play you'll see more people just forget that blizzard even exists. Blizzcon hasn't sold out for the first time this year, keep watching the death spiral.
He literally thought that he does not need to give a frick about user experience because devs and publishers who jump ship would force gamers to buy only from Epic Game Store.

Both lead devs/directors of EGS have literally left the company at the same time.
>Now, Epic Games is on its way to transforming from a game developer, engine creator, and publisher into a platform - Epic 5.0. I am not a good fit for this new version of Epic; it requires people of a different kind.
That's the most subtle "Tim you moron stop chasing after Steam's tail" post I've ever read.
He means those no good evil monopolies like Valve, Apple, and Google taking 30% and having APIs that work on their stores only, such terrible locking down ecosystems
But consoles are exempt, their 30% is good and locked down ecosystems can stay, because he says so
>Can someone explain to me what the FRICK he meant by this?
Buzzwords.
Epic is going to do whatever it can to attract attention and be an "alternative" to Steam. No, this doesn't mean actually making the storefront good or being fair to anyone on it. It means creating a bunch of news and hype.
There is no "cure to the disease" going on over at Epic. They're just going to sit on their thumbs and wait for Steam to do something newsworthy, then post a reaction as the "cure" to the ongoing problem. There just hasn't been much newsworthy recently for them to take advantage about.
there was a little drama a while ago when downgrading manually via the steam console stopped working, but tldr it was just them doing changes to the system so that devs had more control and it was never intended to disable it.
i guess them replacing cs:go with cs2 instead of making it a new release was kinda shitty.
both of those things are things timmy tencent would do too so he didn't call them out.
He is speaking in speech perfectly crafted for dumb minds such as those of right wingers and conservative. Words like "disease" and being the "cure" for something "degenerate" ticks all the boxes in their underdeveloped brains. What I'm trying to say here is that he's just speaking to children.
those threads were top tier. throw in epic's lawyers misfiling documents, Tim having troubles getting his switch together, and you had a recipe for a good time.
Epic screwed over the Unreal Tournament fanbase by cancelling the Unreal Tournament 4 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
>What exactly is EGS curing?
Competition. There are too many pesky storefronts such as GOG out there right now hindering Tim's David vs. Goliath narrative, so they must be killed off using anticompetitive practices such as buying off exclusivity and an unsustainably low cut of sale prices. Natural competition must die for the sake of Tim's narrative.
I think he just wants what Steam has. He knew Fortnite can't last forever and he thought he could make a real Steam competitor, then live off a percentage of games being sold on his store like Gabe.
Continuously harping on Valve and Steam undermines the necessity of EGS in the first place by making it sound like the highest purpose of its existence is solely to dethrone the king, not offer anything of value to customers. This is why it is absolutely, 100% impossible for anyone to ever defend EGS in any capacity whatsoever without reflexively mentioning Steam.
I already dont trust Epic but this entire shitshow just convinced me to never even think of buying from EGS because it seems like a storefront on the brink of getting shuttered.
of course it's going to get shuttered. instead of investing in a better experience for the poor bastards who actually use the fricking store, the pissed money away with frivolous lawsuits, insipid marketing ploys, and forced exclusivity. Tim deserves to be fired as a CEO.
>fails to create a platform worth a frick >WAAAHHHHHHH STEAM WAHHHHH GABEN WAHHH I DONT WANNA PAY APPLE THEIR CUT

yea
I played aion 2 years ago and had to download it through the ncsoft launcher which I had to download from their website even though aion was on steam back in the day
Original Secret World can still be played if you go through your Funcom account and download the client, as long as you had a key for the original game instead of playing the shitty legends reboot that was forced on everyone on Steam.
there's plenty of leeching devs who complain about steam's cut but won't put their money where their mouth is and pay for their own game's distribution
>I dislike the Steam monopoly and the 30% cut they take
Steam doesn't have a monopoly, you do know mono means one right? The very existence of Epic's store, GoG, etc means there's more than one, moron. They're just the best and that's the fault of their competition for not providing competition. Also Steam's 30% cut isn't some crazy high outlier, it's the fricking standard, literally every other digital storefront including the like of MS, PS and Nintendo take the same amount and brick-and-mortar stores take even higher. You're a goddamn moron.
It's bullshit. Tim Sweeney is a fricking moron, who's trying to burn down the PC industry because he finally got it through his thick skull he could've made money, but squandered it all these years, before building up his golden goose, Fortnite.
genshin isn't in EGS jail, it's just not on steam so they don't have to give valve a cut of the MTX.
plenty of people play it on PC through its unobtrusive dedicated launcher and they get the entirety of what those players pay. if they put it on steam they'd lose most PC players to the steam version and make less money for little gain.
most of their revenue comes from phone players anyway.
I still think he should make it so games developed using Unreal can only be sold on the EGS. This means that either more games will be available on the EGS exclusively and flop or fewer games will be developed using UE.
The moment that one of the exclusive jumped ship to steam or went on pirate website is the moment it's over for EGS.
Everybody learnt that they can just wait for a year or just pirate the game.
I always fricking love it when smarmy corpo lawyers get MOGGED by judges, who they presumed to be techilliterate boomers, that know their shit. Same with the FTC vs Pajeetsoft trial.
The "disease" is Valve has "his" money and the cure is convincing you that his snake oil is better then his competitor's snake oil. So tired of anyone listening to these CEOs who have a literal timestamped (calculated to your relative timezone for your fricking convenience) papertrail and yet here we are.
consumer reviews and games having the ability to organize and combine their opinions on a game for all of our sakes. EGS advertises itself as publisher first, consumer second. Steam is consumer first, publisher second. Tencent is worth 430 times what valve is worth. I've never installed the Chinese cyber espionage platform so I'm not familiar with how its sales are. But once they manage to outspend and outmaneuver steam and become market topdog, egs will stop with the free games and sales.
Ive redeemed nearly every free game EGS has offered and still have not spent a single cent on their storefront and never will, but thanks for the games, Tim!
By the way, I haven't spent one single hour playing any of the games I redeemed, but I still did it anyways lol
I'm convinced Timmy doesn't want to put in the minimum effort of copying the best features of Steam because doing so would be admitting somebody did something better than you. It's all ego.
I wonder what happened to all of those people "predicting" EGS is the future for gaming? I know that that fat frick troon Jim Sterling thought that at one point.
i dont speak hebrew, can someone give me a qrd of whats happening? from here it looks like this moron whole argument was "we are not steam, come to us" and cheap moneyhats and thought it would work on the consumer
pretty much.
tim bullshits a lot trying to sound like he's trying to improve the gaming market space for everyone, when he really just wants to own a platform as lucrative as steam, and to sell microtransactions in fortnite without giving a third-party a cut of it.
EGS didn't take off as a platform, so now he's trying to make fortnite itself into a platform for other games.
Monopoly.
Valve deserved the first spot, there's no reason to compete when the first in line is actually the best.
>BUT-
Steam Input and Proton funding, your arguments are worthless.

What monopoly?
Offering a superior service is not a monopoly
>We want to cure the Steam Monopoly by making our own worse Monopoly.
If steam was a monopoly then why did I have games on multiple other store fronts before EGS existed?
making sure china runs everything for good

The need to pay for games.

I thought Telltale died years ago.
They did, and came back but no one seems to know they made a new batman game and an expanse game. So now they are dying again.
More like nobody gives a fricking shit about an expanse game, batman audience doesn't want visual novels because they're not the same walking dead normies.

You are probably way too young to remember anything if you post garbage like this.
You have absolutely no idea who this guy was in mid 90's.
Yeah and John Romero was a different guy in the 90s as well but now he's a mouthbreather.
It's been three decades, moron.
That anon is right that Epic was making one "gamers bad" post after another when they launched EGS. Not sure what they were aiming for.
It was a bid to appeal to publishers.
Unfortunately, after EGS came out almost everyone came fricking crawling back to Steam anyway.
The mid 90s was 30 years ago
People can change a lot in that kind of time

EGS and Unreal are the disease.
That's why he is killing Epic with no survivors.
He can start by killing himself.

you mean esg not egs, right?
epic is both
The disease is Steam being bigger and more important, the cure is an Epic monopoly.
the disease is microtransactions and live service models

EGS is killing epic to save the gaming industry.
he's just desperate because his shit store is failing and he went all-in on it. the last words of a dead man.
It's REALLY fricking simple I don't know how this is so hard to understand.
NEVER trust a business or service that doesn't even try to make money.
That hero complex he's got is gonna bite him in the ass even moreso than it already did.
You are not a hero. You are a billionaire who wants more market share
Epic already abandoned the PC gaming market and declared it dead once, no reason they won't do it again.
I definitely prefer any private company over one backed by investors, especially Chinese ones.
My personal favorite
I always fricking love it when smarmy corpo lawyers get MOGGED by judges, who they presumed to be techilliterate boomers, that know their shit. Same with the FTC vs Pajeetsoft trial.
The "disease" is Valve has "his" money and the cure is convincing you that his snake oil is better then his competitor's snake oil. So tired of anyone listening to these CEOs who have a literal timestamped (calculated to your relative timezone for your fricking convenience) papertrail and yet here we are.
Tim's daily seethe about valve and steam
consumer reviews and games having the ability to organize and combine their opinions on a game for all of our sakes.
I've played a free EGS game once and then I got annoyed by how shitty the epic launcher is and never again.
Like the average person buying games they probably forgot about it
Tim is short on cash and can write the checks for it anymore.
Though in Sterling's case it's just being a contrarian like always.
i dont speak hebrew, can someone give me a qrd of whats happening? from here it looks like this moron whole argument was "we are not steam, come to us" and cheap moneyhats and thought it would work on the consumer
Its Tim lying out of his ass again
pretty much.
tim bullshits a lot trying to sound like he's trying to improve the gaming market space for everyone, when he really just wants to own a platform as lucrative as steam, and to sell microtransactions in fortnite without giving a third-party a cut of it.
EGS didn't take off as a platform, so now he's trying to make fortnite itself into a platform for other games.
gamer entitlement. game hoarding. antisemitism against developers. those are the three main ones.
