That's what Steam did though. You'd buy a game on CD and it would force you to install the piece of shit that was Steam. Then later, Steam introduced regional pricing for all games (not just for what localizer gatekeepers decided to offer) and got a lot of cash from third-worlders

The publisher chose to do that, not steam. The publisher decided not to put anything on the disc steam has nothing to do with those decisions and never did. Why are you blaming Steam for things that publishers and developers chose to do?

I hate how he cleverly framed all of his propaganda as supportive of "developers" when he was really only targeting PUBLISHERS. The people that actually make the decisions on how and where to sell a product. To say what Timmy Tencent is doing is skeezy, is an understatement. He was drawing lines with the work of developers to try and disrupt steam so his store could become the new steam. He kept talking about taking out the middleman but he was negotiating solely with the middleman and a lot of developers ate shit because of it. They had no choice where their game ended up, they didnt' finance it and had no publishing rights to it. Obviously most devs want maximum eyeballs on their work, I can't imagine many developers enjoying PC exclusivity wars. The only guy who seemed positively enthusiastic was Randy Pitchford.

It's a shame too cause original Battle.net was pretty comfy. Yeah it was "another" launcher but at least it worked exactly as it needed to. Which is a lot more then could be said for Uplay, Bethesda or fricking Minecraft's launcher. Now everything except Steam is so bloated. And even Steam isn't immune to it.

        >He's right tho? Battle.net worked fine for 2 decades. Consoomer will use whatever is required to get their slop.
Battle.net only worked because of the perceived value of the blizzard brand, once they started to add activision slop it broke the idea that it was a premium game only service, once blizzard started releasing terrible fricking game after terrible game (mainly awful wow expansions) it started to break the blizzdrones out of their stupor. Don't get me wrong there are still a ton of mazed morons playing blizzard games but since most of them are awful engagement simulators that are only concerned about metrics and not how fun they are to play you'll see more people just forget that blizzard even exists. Blizzcon hasn't sold out for the first time this year, keep watching the death spiral.

Epic is going to do whatever it can to attract attention and be an "alternative" to Steam. No, this doesn't mean actually making the storefront good or being fair to anyone on it. It means creating a bunch of news and hype.

There is no "cure to the disease" going on over at Epic. They're just going to sit on their thumbs and wait for Steam to do something newsworthy, then post a reaction as the "cure" to the ongoing problem. There just hasn't been much newsworthy recently for them to take advantage about.

there was a little drama a while ago when downgrading manually via the steam console stopped working, but tldr it was just them doing changes to the system so that devs had more control and it was never intended to disable it.

Competition. There are too many pesky storefronts such as GOG out there right now hindering Tim's David vs. Goliath narrative, so they must be killed off using anticompetitive practices such as buying off exclusivity and an unsustainably low cut of sale prices. They're just the best and that's the fault of their competition for not providing competition. Also Steam's 30% cut isn't some crazy high outlier, it's the fricking standard, literally every other digital storefront including the like of MS, PS and Nintendo take the same amount and brick-and-mortar stores take even higher. Tim is right and the latest Dota patch proved it, fricking abandoned game with bugs even during "championship" games
    CS2 is soulless

I still think he should make it so games developed using Unreal can only be sold on the EGS. This means that either more games will be available on the EGS exclusively and flop or fewer games will be developed using UE.

Even Tim's not dumb enough to do that, especially with UE getting a spike in interest following the self-destruction of Unity.

GOG is a better steam competitor than EGS.

    Bit of ego tripping there.

The moment that one of the exclusive jumped ship to steam or went on pirate website is the moment it's over for EGS.
Everybody learnt that they can just wait for a year or just pirate the game.

Epic and Steam are both cancer. GOG is the only store that i approve of.

It's REALLY fricking simple I don't know how this is so hard to understand.

NEVER trust a business or service that doesn't even try to make money.

That hero complex he's got is gonna bite him in the ass even moreso than it already did.

You are not a hero. You are a billionaire who wants more market share

Epic already abandoned the PC gaming market and declared it dead once, no reason they won't do it again.

I definitely prefer any private company over one backed by investors, especially Chinese ones.

I always fricking love it when smarmy corpo lawyers get MOGGED by judges, who they presumed to be techilliterate boomers, that know their shit. Same with the FTC vs Pajeetsoft trial.

The "disease" is Valve has "his" money and the cure is convincing you that his snake oil is better then his competitor's snake oil. So tired of anyone listening to these CEOs who have a literal timestamped (calculated to your relative timezone for your fricking convenience) papertrail and yet here we are.

Tim's daily seethe about valve and steam

consumer reviews and games having the ability to organize and combine their opinions on a game for all of our sakes. EGS advertises itself as publisher first, consumer second. Steam is consumer first, publisher second. Tencent is worth 430 times what valve is worth. I've never installed the Chinese cyber espionage platform so I'm not familiar with how its sales are. But once they manage to outspend and outmaneuver steam and become market topdog, egs will stop with the free games and sales.

Ive redeemed nearly every free game EGS has offered and still have not spent a single cent on their storefront and never will, but thanks for the games, Tim!
By the way, I haven't spent one single hour playing any of the games I redeemed, but I still did it anyways lol

I've played a free EGS game once and then I got annoyed by how shitty the epic launcher is and never again.

I'm convinced Timmy doesn't want to put in the minimum effort of copying the best features of Steam because doing so would be admitting somebody did something better than you. It's all ego.

I wonder what happened to all of those people "predicting" EGS is the future for gaming? I know that that fat frick troon Jim Sterling thought that at one point.

Like the average person buying games they probably forgot about it

Tim is short on cash and can write the checks for it anymore.

Though in Sterling's case it's just being a contrarian like always.

      pretty much.
tim bullshits a lot trying to sound like he's trying to improve the gaming market space for everyone, when he really just wants to own a platform as lucrative as steam, and to sell microtransactions in fortnite without giving a third-party a cut of it.
EGS didn't take off as a platform, so now he's trying to make fortnite itself into a platform for other games.

gamer entitlement. game hoarding. antisemitism against developers. those are the three main ones.
