I mean, that's fine. Is still her 2003 design, just adapted to not clash with the rest of the game. They could had made up their own Karai, or base her on any other version. But this is their way to say that 2003 is "classic" Karai.
They keep overdoing the cartoon look and it's quickly losing appeal. They should have toned it back on the DLC characters. Specifically because they're more serious. At least to around 80 shredder levels.

It will always amaze me that for a series with ludicrous shit like Shredder's mom, the 87 Turtles never had Karai. Her as a concept, Shredder's Daughter, seems pretty much easy to adapt and to make silly plotlines given the series tone.
That's because in the original comics she only appeared after Shredder died for good and has no relation to him besides being from the same clan. The 2003 animated series started the concept of using her as his daughter and that took off, now most people believe that was always the case and most new works ended up adopting.
The 2003 series does have some good ideas despite the issues it had, especially after the 3rd season. It really shouldn't have gone on for as long as it did.

Karai as a character was introduce in the comics around 93, the show was still going but her comic original as with everything else was a little different to what we are use to now. No family relation with Shredder, though on practice similar to her 2003 cartoon debut of being a leader of the Foot branch in Japan, and her whole storyline is about cleaning the mess in NY after Shredder's dead and the remains of the BY branch being on Civil War. Alliance with the turtles included, though by cutting her relation with Shredder, she actually was very straight forward with that alliance. I guess they could had introduce her in the cartoon as a rival to Shredder from Japan, but back then the "Father and Dauhter" dynamic wasnt a thing yet, and I guess the writers didnt saw anyvcomedy appeal, nor a way to sell toys of a "ninja girl" back then.
Oh, I didn't knew that. I though her being the successor of the foot clan leadership was pretty immediate.

There is no "80s" Karai. Not even in the comics, she was introduce in the 93. And back then she didn't even had any relation with Shredder other than being a member of the Foot Clan. So, in many aspects, most of what we accept as "Karai" these days, started with the 03 cartoon. And also, in that sense, it was either the 03 Karai, or the 2012 or Movie Karai, or Rise Karai. And honestly, for I still take 03 Karai.
She was in the 16-bit fighting games and those were mostly inspired by the cartoon series. They even used some of her moves in the trailer.
That's actually a cool callback on the moveset department, but in regards designs, the Tournament Fighters game did had two different versions of Karai, both of them slightly based on the comic, though not really (they wanted to Avenge Shredder in the game, being fully villainous here) with the Genesis version giving her a whole Mad Scientist angle with her being behind the clones. The SNES on it's part just made it so you couldn't even be 100% she was woman to begin with. It's true those games were the first real attempt to adapt Karai, and they are from the 80's cartoon era, but the fact they both had their own version of the character makes it hardly a solid base to work with.

On it's way, is still the "mold" on which all versions were based afterwards, so is the closest thing she has to a "classic" design. Or rather, it is her classic design, as with everyone else, the Comic original is more of an "idea" to work from.

Sadly, they had to still make a new remix for the nickelodeon broadcast. Fred Wolf is one thing but the rights to the theme song is fricked.

They might reveal a third one just before or at release.
Honestly, at this point, I would prefer them to make a fighting game with this sprite art/adaptations of more, modern characters in it.

Last two seasons had a lot of meddling from what I understand. The series should be fine to watch until S5 and then watch Turtles Forever.
