I love how people who never read the comics say this shit. They were off in fricking outer space fighting dinosaur people in the second arc, only the one shot first issue was 'dark' and it was meant as a parody in the first place.
It was never consistent. The first issue was a grimdark parody but then about 2 issues afterwards you have Mike adopting Klunk and hijacking a van full of Christmas toys from robbers to hand out at an orphanage and then they go fight Triceritons and then teaming up with the goofy as shit Justice League guys. But then you get hardcore shit like What Goes Around Comes Around, the flight from New York, fighting those survivalists, and Return to New York / City at War.

Wasn't it only dark and synical in tone because it was meant to be a satire of I think it was Deathstroke and the other grimdark characters that were surging in popularity at the time? TMNT started as satirical characters iirc, and then just naturally grew into what they are today, which you could argue is just leaning harder into the underlying comedy tone that was always meant to be present being that they're fricking mutant turtles.

The original comics didn’t have the turtles as differently characterized or differently skilled as the 90’s show and comics based on that show would portray the turtles, they acted almost the same. The Last Ronin does take some cues from the better known turtles but it is taking from the original creators comics, as one of them came back to The Last Ronin, Mikey is far from the hyper kid he would be known as.

One thing that irked me about Last Ronin was that Leo, Raph and Casey's deaths seemed more like cliffhanger deaths than anything conclusive. They're the sort of deaths you write when the character is definitely gonna come back later. Donny and Splinter at least got shot to death with arrows.

Old and busted heroes predated the Last Ronin though, you already mentioned Spider Jizz, and I’m sure it was Old Man Logan that made it popular, with Marvel milking that universe dry after its initial success.

Saw this thread and read through the entirety of Last Ronin to understand the concept better.
Great comic, even if it just another DKR, but I don't see a good game out of it. Mikey fights like an Omni-Turtle which is cool, especially if the game lets you switch fighting styles on the fly between the four different Turtles, but outside of that the story is pretty bog standard backstory/setup stuff outside of the opening blitzkrieg and Hiroko fight. Unless they have you also fight through the flashbacks as the different turtles themselves (plus Casey and Splinter) which could be neat. I also don't think playing as Nu-Casey would be interesting, either. She didn't really stand out much as a character. Maybe that's just me.
But man, it would be really cool if they take nods from the comic and restrict you to only a specific style during the different sections of the Hiroko fight, ending with Mikey's original.
