To anons here with the whole "I only used pokemon native to generation it was introduced in" mentality:
Would you consider picrel as Johto or a Sinnoh mon? Like would you used it HGSS or nah because it was introduced in gen 4 not gen 2?

i would consider it a sinnoh mon, but would use it in either dpt or hgss
These. I used one in HG.
If you're splitting hairs that much, "native to generation" and "native to region" are two different things. The former would make it ineligible for a HGSS playthrough, but the latter would be fine since it's a retcon and Mamoswine was always a Piloswine evolution.
I’m willing to use any Mon as long as at least one of their stages in from that region. So I’d use picrel in both Johto and Sinnoh. Even baby mons count, like I used that Happiny from DP and evolved it into a Blissey.
I consider them native to the original region the base mon is from because it's all retcons. In the new canon people in Johto always knew that Piloswine evolved into Mamoswine
In Kanto Brock always knew that Onix would evolve into Steelix, etc
Obviously regional variants are different. Alolan Raichu isn't a Kanto mon even though it evolves from Kanto Pikachu since it only becomes that in the one region.
>In Kanto Brock always knew that Onix would evolve into Steelix, etc
Is that truly the case? Because the Steel type was recently discovered by the time of Gen 2.
For me it just depends on how readily available it is. The point of playing with mons from that region is the idea of getting to play with and experience new mons, so if I'm spending the majority of a game with the mon from another region just to get the evolution for the last stretch of the game (especially if it a mon I have already used) then it kinda defeats the point.
bum
these types of mons absolutely count for both regions, it feels wrong to exclude them
Depends. If I'm shitting on Johto, I consider it gen 4; if I'm shitting on Sinnoh, I consider it gen 2
Both. I don't mind using cross-gen evos in my teams for remakes for something new and different.
TPC doesn’t consider pokemon to belong to a specific region, it’s all just autistic fan headcanon. use whatever you want.
I don't know about that, the games do use "Kantonian Meowth" to refer to the non-Galar non-Alolan Meowth variant that is native to not just Kanto, but other places too, and then some.
I think he just means GF doesn't expect people to only use Pokemon introduced in a specific region, and they don't design their games around that. Which is true and frankly I feel like it's an unhealthy approach to the game's that causes people to be unfairly critical of certain regional dexes just because they don't cater to this type of autism. Like, play the game however you want, I've done this before too, it's just some people take it way too seriously and act like it's the only way you're allowed to play the games. The excuse of wanting to use 'new' Pokemon only goes so far, because let's be real, I really doubt anybody has used every single Pokemon from other generations. And some Pokemon are given a bigger spotlight in regions other than their 'home' region or are available to catch earlier, making them better suited for use in those 'foreign' regions. But some autists will hold themselves back because they just CAN'T use any non-native mons.
>Vanilla Crystal ROMs by default have a single available slot for adding a mon
>Painstakingly code in stats/lvl up moves/evo trigger/front+backsprites/somewhat related cry
>Get to have my fully realized autistic runs whenever the frick I want
Despite Swinub+Piloswine being 2 of the 40 that had been cut & turned Missingo-slots in RGBY I swill always onsider the whole line from premiere game through & through.
Both. Use it wherever, I did the same with Togekiss
Personally I don't like retcons because then my head goes "yeah, I have this, but this has an evo somewhere else".
I think is a Johto mon, but I will put it hidden deep in Mahogany's Ice Cave. Maybe a postgame area.
