        Anonymous

Canon sucks in comics, not because the idea of having a history is bad. It sucks, because the editors never have a plan, and never actually care to make the writers build off of the previous writers.
When you have one writer, they write a great series of interconnected stories. It's the next writer that goes "I'm not reading that", that ruins it.
Have an editor that actually has a plan, and actually controls their writers, and comic canon would be fine.
Constant resetting isn't a problem of canon, it's a problem of chasing sales bumps. Resets bring more sales, so they do them often. The entire industry has been taught this, and that's what sells, so that's what they do.

        episodic shit is fricking garbage

Ironically enough, episodic actually respected its canon better. Serialized stuff goes "I don't want to use what was done before, reset everything somehow".

What does that even mean? How does following basic canon "hold back" a franchise? And why is that bad?

        Anonymous

I'll give you an example. It's a major blight on the Zelda series, fricking autists waste so much effort trying to figure out in what order unrelated fictional events didn't happen in so they can map it all out in a gay little timeline. If the devs actually took it seriously it would constrict their creativity in what they can and can't do because it would contradict or not lead into something. Not everything is that kind of story. Tolkiens legendarium it works, Warhammer 40k it works because the settings themselves are objects of change, in Zelda or random comic x it's just an excuse to go on a little adventure, it adds nothing to try to explain logically why the same little green mute gaygit keeps coming back to life and fighting the same guy because it's silly and absurd when taken as a grand overarching epic.

          Anonymous

Yeah, well blame the devs who put so much world building shit into fallout. If you just want to go around mindlessly blowing mutants off, the lore isn't going to stop you

            Anonymous

Nah that's not the point, it doesn't have to be mindless it can be really deep, you just don't have to hold in your mind the expectation that it be consistent with a different game that's not the game you're playing or vice-versa. If they want to use things from another game they can, but they don't have to. That would make canon an option not a shackle.

              Anonymous

Part of Fallout's core appeal as a series was the decision made by Interplay to have the sequel build off events that could happen in the first game and advance the history of the setting. Adherence to lore is what makes this possible, trying to disregard the lore for the sake of a story in-the-moment actively is a detriment to maintaining that appeal. If you want to paint outside the frame, don't have the frame in the first place.

in Nevada, because the bulk of their forces stayed behind to play bodyguards for the cow barons.
          >others aren't shown working
sure but they're mentioned, the NCR has a truck repair station in their base in NV and they run trains for supplies. Frick man the Super Mutants under the Master had Steam Trucks running in FO1. NV didn't have any working vehicles because they had to throw the game together in a little over a year using mostly already created assets. There's a vertibird in NV because guess what? there was a vertibird in 3. Vehicles outside of the car in 2 have always existed, but only really mentioned in dialogue.

          >in Nevada
In total, you ignored what the other anon said here:

They chose the timeframe, though, and it is clear in New Vegas the NCR is already in bad shape.
If you talk to Thomas Hildern (not the greatest soruce, but still) about food shortages in the NCR he says this
          >Not yet. But our government understands the value of proactive thought. Our studies project an imbalance between production and consumption. Or, for a layman such as yourself - not enough food, too many mouths to feed. Mass starvation. In a decade or so.

          The NCR is fricked.
          >trains
Trains are way easier to manage than cars. Look at our own history.
          >Steam Trucks running in FO1
The Master was a super genius, willing to sacrifice everyone for the Super Mutant future. The NCR has to have somewhat of an appearance of civility.
          >vertibird in NV
Well, I was actually talking about the Vertibird blueprints of Fallout 2. They don't have to do the R&D to make flying vehicles. They just need to make the factories.
          >Vehicles outside of the car in 2 have always existed, but only really mentioned in dialogue.

Which works in the corporations favor in that it’s less people speaking poorly about their latest pile of shit. You’re basically saying that apathy is a good thing. It’s the same logic gays like you use to excuse corporate horseshit all the time

Do you think they give a shit how angry canon-maniacs get as they make threads like this to give them free advertising for their latest shitpile? They do it on purpose because they know you will. There is no need for dissent if something has no power. They should be made to earn our interest with good writing instead of us trying to earn good writing with our pleas and feedback.

There's some thought to be made about to this post.

It IS right to b***h about it. It's the first step to make companies realize their mistake.

But we also must consider what we, fans, consider our own canon to be. Since anything owned by a company is subject to being ruined anytime by any shitty writer.

I mean, it's obvious what the canon is now
        >Black Isle Fallout

        >BethSoft Fallout
        3, 4, 76, Amazon show
It used to be West and East Coast, but the show ended that divide in spectacular fashion by moving Shady Sands 150 miles south and wiping it off the face of the wasteland. And they retconned in the NCR in such a stupid way that Todd had to counter-retcon it not even a week later. For that matter, they also added multiple surface-level vaults to the LA area that the Master conveniently missed right in his backyard. Like they couldn't have made it easier to tell that there's a Black Isle version of the West Coast, and a Bethesda-licensed version of it.

I look forward to season 2.

What the frick is holding Bethesda back? They have not done anything innovative with the franchise, keep milking the same concepts, the same assets, the same imagery over and over again bending left and right and center just to fit in BoS or mutants with Enclave in their new "fallout" game. There are TONS of areas to explore, countries to visit, moral dillemas to solve. What is the post-nuclear world outside America is like? Bethesda has no answer to this because they don't give a frick.

You're just describing their business model. That's it. Morrowind, Skyrim, and purchasing the Fallout IP have carried their company for 2 decades. They're extremely good at marketing, and they have a monopoly on a specific type of highly-modular RPG. They've carved out their niche and they're content to sit in it, similar to Game Freak. Not evil, just incompetent and vaguely soulless.

        >What the frick is holding Bethesda back
Incompetence and nepotism, as the lesser and the greater being laziness. Remember when CoD dominated in the early aughts and 2010 by milking the same formula over and over? Bethesda is the same but more spread out with it. They don’t release games often but when they do it’s the same shit but with a different coat of paint. FO4 is just post-apocalyptic Skyrim and Starfield is just Sci-fi Skyrim. They started doing similar shit with Oblivion and FO3 but Skyrim is where they solidified it. However unlike CoDbabies their fans are slightly pickier and you can’t just keep feeding them trash forever Starfield already struck a blow and has people questioning Todd and the company as a whole. Guaranteed whatever the next release is will just be Skyrim 2.0 (1.5 in my opinion) and only the most hardcore drones will eat it up while everyone else just calls it out.

          Anonymous

The fact that the last "normal" RPG they made was 9 years ago, I'm not sure they have the capability to even make Skyrim 1.5 anymore.

          Anonymous

The problem with Starfield is that it's not actually Sci-Fi Skyrim. If it was it would probably have a playerbase. As is the game is like a hundred shitty locations plopped in isolated instances on planets that have frick all on them aside from the 30 random POIs, where you kill the same three bands of space bandits using the same dozen or so guns because melee is a complete afterthought

            Anonymous

starfield has a critical flaw at just the conceptual level: it's supposed to be a game about exploration, but it is designed to make exploration as hollow and meaningless as possible
everything else flows from that, it sucks

            Anonymous

It's actually more like Oblivion in space

          Anonymous

Starfield’s main issue is unique to Starfield though. That is there is no way to manually get from point A to point B without opening the map and fast traveling which utterly kills exploration, the main selling point of these games.

idk the context here since I haven't seen the show or any discussions about it, but if you're not going to try to make it slot in with the actual canon, why not just write a show that rips off the concepts and do whatever you want with it?

        Anonymous

        >why not just write a show that rips off the concepts and do whatever you want with it?
because a show attached to the Fallout IP is guaranteed to make way more money than a show that only resembles Fallout.

Every bit of "overarching canon" was made non-canon by Bethesda years ago. Literally all you have in terms of lore is what the games give you. Because when you Don't stick to a Canon and just alter the story however you like, you get world of warcraft where the story and game world were completely destroyed because of it

        Anonymous

Wow was destroyed because the game was going on for too long and it was impossible to keep making new "lore" that was as over the top and extravanagent as the previous expansion/raid tier
Once lich king was defeated that was it
        Nothing else could be done
If they continued with new expansions but tried to keep the lore simple then no one would play the game because it's as if the story went 100 steps backwards back to level 40 content

      >shady sands is now in LA
      >some sort of massive "fall" in shady sands had occurred that no one talked about in New Vegas
      >shady sands is nuked after its "fall" by Vault-Tec
      >the NCR has seemingly been completely wiped out from their heartland, barely any remnants remain, all of their infrastructure and massive population has basically been reduced to nothing
      >the Brotherhood of Steel goes from barely existing at all to being an immensely powerful force in less than two decades. Despite this, they are depicted in the show as being extremely incompetent and their culture is not faithful to the games
      >Caesar's Legion is nonexistent
      >New Vegas is shown to be largely/completely abandoned with destroyed securitrons and crashed vertibirds
      >Vault-Tec is hinted to have started the great war by nuking America and/or China
      >House was aware they might do this and was at the meeting when it was discussed, meaning that House's story he told in New Vegas was largely a lie.
      >Sinclair was also at this meeting and was representing Big MT
      >power armor, the technology that was so successful it allowed America to push into China, is shown to have a vulnerability that allows its wearer to be killed by a single shot to the front of the suit
      >Vault-Tec are now a major faction
      >the Brotherhood of Steel are now a major faction
      >somehow, the Enclave has returned

In conclusion, the NCR, House, and the Legion have essentially been wiped off the map, replaced by the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave, and Vault-Tec, who are now the major factions of the setting. A single season of bethesda's and amazon's "fallout" have undone everything that Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout New Vegas had built. The west coast is now the east coast wearing a cowboy hat.

They like Bethesda's version of Fallout, which is mostly
      >Wow! Cool armor!
      >Wow! Cool looting and shooting!
      >Wow! Cool retro-futurism!
Keep in mind that a lot of the original Fallout's identity is owed to how much dialogue there is in it, even though speech as a skill is relatively useless. The gameplay of Fallout 1 and 2 to a lesser extent is not approachable for a lot of people. I personally don't really like it, but I still played them. Dialogue, meaningful choices in quests, and are the vectors by which the original games explore their themes, whereas 3 and 4 are much more about individual stories that are set within the wasteland: finding your dad, the water purifier, Shaun and Institute, etc. In contrast, getting revenge on Benny in New Vegas is, like, a minor side quest. You can kill Benny within an hour of starting the game, and this gives the MacGuffin that opens up the broader ideological conflict that is the actual narrative thematic core of the game.
It's also really easy to see the fundamental difference between Bethesda Fallout and "classic" Fallout just by comparing how 3 and NV handle speech checks. There are so many fricking speech checks in NV and they're not %-based dice rolls like 3.

Some people just want to explore metro tunnels, laugh at the Republic of Dave, blow up a few cities, shoot "raiders", and turn their brain off. The think that as long as a product is able to accurately mimic the iconography of Fallout, that it IS Fallout, and that's where the massive divide begins.

            You're missing the point.
Despite the shilling, the show makes embarrassing mistakes, it's not just the timeline, but it moving Shady Sands to LA basically retcons all of 1 too.
Even in a fixed timeline, where bombs dropped in 2285 or whatever, the depiction of the NCR still is moronic from what we know in NV. Nuking their capital couldn't ruin the whole country.
But that's not the worst part. The worst part is that not only Todd explicitly approved it (which at this point makes it really hard to argue that he doesn't hate NV) but that almost entirely invalidates the game and no one fricking cares, and consoomers just defend it

            >right
            >I was thinking there's a scene where Lucy walks into a classroom and there's a chalkboard where there's just an exact timeline
            >that's fricking sick
The only NCR characters with speaking roles say nothing of substance about the NCR. You have Moldaver, for whom the bombing of Shading Sands is part of personal vendetta against Vault-Tec and Hank (for stealing her cold fusion MacGuffin and bombing Rose, respectively). Moldaver doesn't have a single line that's ABOUT the NCR. She gets gut shot off-camera. There's the implied ex-NCR ranger, who doesn't have a single line about the NCR, but calls Moldaver a "madwoman in the hills". Then there's the black-haired psycho b***h in Vault 4, whose only purpose is to portray the Vault 4 Shady Sands refugees as a Moldaver-worshipping blood cult. Maximus is also a Shady Sands survivor who has nothing meaningful to say about it.

            They went with the chalkboard.

It makes no sense for Robert House to have been in on this conspiracy to start the war when half his writing and storyline in New Vegas is about him trying desperately to grapple his company back together because the war caught him off guard. If he knew exactly when the war was going to start then why was there ever an issue with the platinum chip. It doesn't make any sense that he somehow knew the exact day that the nuclear war starts, but Robco fails in it's plans. And what is this implying, that Robert House is in the enclave? But he says himself that he likes the NCR and want's it to succeed economically because it's key to his benefit, so what he was secretly conspiring with the fricking Enclave to nuke the NCR capital, cripple his largest manufacturing and economics hub so they lose the war and...the legion takes Vegas and he dies? What?
I suppose like if we assume the NCR ending of Vegas is canon but House survives that I can see him like ringing Kyle Maclachlan up on the phone and asking him to nuke the NCR, that might make sense but given that you need to take out house to do the NCR ending then...we're really reaching for this to make sense.

Confirming the Vaut Tec conspiracy would probably be fine on it's own but I don't know what value this adds to the setting, as other people have said, the fact that we don't know who started the war is a huge point and a major theme of the series, it doesn't matter who started it, the old world is dead, knowing who started the war doesn't add anything, further more Vault Tec being the ones who started it doesn't add anything thematically either? Like in a vacuum confirming the Vault Tec conspiracy is okay but we're doing it in service to resurrecting the Enclave again so we can have a story-line about how we have to deal with them again.

I'm not even going to address the NCR chick, or Vault 4? So she's NCR but like, she's fostering some sort of cult of people in a Vault for...what purpose?

Let's summarize the Fallout show's plot:

    >Lucy's mother Rose deduces that there is civilization on the surface and tells her husband, Hank, who wants to bomb any civilization that threatens Vault-Tec's plan.
    >Hank decides not to bomb on Shady Sands
    >Rose flees Vault 33 with their children, arriving at Shady Sands, the capital of the NCR, which is 150 miles south of where it is in 1, 2, & New Vegas
    >Hank pursues her to Shady Sands and takes their children back to Vault 33 with him, but Rose refuses to return
    >Hank decides not to bomb on Shady Sands
    >Shady Sands "falls" due to an unrelated, unknown incident in 2277
    >5 years later
    >Hank decides to bomb the fallen capital of a declining NCR in 2282 after the events of New Vegas
    (Word of Todd)
    >Rose returns to the fallen Shady Sands before the bombing so she can become a feral ghoul during it and have her charred corpse recovered by Moldaver, who wasn't there
    >simultaneously, Maximus returns to the fallen Shady Sands before the bombing so he can survive it by hiding in a milk vending machine
Having resettled outside of the fallen Shady Sands, every surviving NCR citizen in its heartland of LA simultaneously decides to defect when it is bombed 5 years after falling. Having defected, every former NCR citizen also simultaneously decides to abandon and destroy every other NCR settlement in LA, rather than remain where they have food, water, and shelter, under a different or no flag. The NCR is reduced to two small groups of survivors in Vault 4 and the Griffifth Observatory, leaving no other evidence of an NCR presence except Shady Sands, which fell and was bombed 5 years after it fell because it threatened Vault-Tec's plan.

And this how Lucy find out that her kidnapped father, Liam Neeson, is actually Shaun, a high-ranking member of an advanced secret society that is trying to manipulate the Wasteland. And then Lucy brings the GECK to Griffifth Observatory so Moldaver can activate Project Electricity.

The only "evidence" of this is stupid conjecture made up by fans. They're all game developers, they are friends and support each other and Bethesda recognizes that Fallout New Vegas being a good awesome game that everyone loves improves the image of the Fallout brand which makes it stronger and encourages sales of further games.

It makes pretty much no sense at all in the context of the TV show considering they included all sorts of nods to it like ncr ranger armor, house, and fricking new Vegas itself. There are tons of references and plot developments involving the NCR also. If Todd hated it and wanted to erase it why would the show keep bringing this stuff up

        >considering they included all sorts of nods to it like ncr ranger armor, house, and fricking new Vegas itself
And then they character assassinated House and blew up the NCR.
This cope about just because there's elements there means he can't hate it is ridiculous. The Witcher show puts several elements from the books onscreen, doesn't mean the creators don't hate the original

You do realize the show brings up the NCR purely to erase it, right?

The cherry on top is that it's actually the Brotherhood of Steel who double-tap the remaining NCR remnants at Griffifth Observatory. The Prydwyn, the giant, flying symbol of Fallout 4 flies across the country so that the Brotherhood can gun down the NCR like dogs.

No, it's the fact that fallout 3 already fricked up a lot of the universe because it was made by people that glanced at fallout 2 and then made a game. Fallout 4 made by frickers that only took a glance at 3. So then you have this show which is made by people who looked at everything and then you get this mess. It messes up all of the progress and world building that Fallout and fallout 2 had established in commiefornia, new vegas doesn't really matter in the end.

That’s the thing about the ghouls and really all the good shit in Fallout everything has a give and take. Super Mutants are extremely strong and resilient at the cost of being sterile, Ghouls are functionally immortal and immune to radiation at the cost of looking like decaying corpses, the Brotherhood was extremely technologically advanced but they were isolationist so any big hit to their numbers meant they were done for. It’s these flaws that prevent everything from becoming all fricked up.

You seem to misunderstand. The siphoning of water, Rose leaving and the "fall" was in 2277. People who watched the show naturally assumed this year was also when Hank nuked Shady Sands. But now Todd is saying Hank dropped the nuke in 2281/2282 (to avoid continuity errors with NV). Which makes no sense within the context of the show.

He had a tracking device on Maximus and knew the exact moment when a plot-critical character would be in Shady Sands, which had already fallen. He made a gamble: if one plot-critical character was there, it was likely that either Rose or Moldaver was as well. Unfortunately he only hit Rose, and Maximus survived by climbing into a fridge so that a Brotherhood of Steel paladin who was also there at the time of the bombing could find him.

      >ghouls in the show have regenerative powers
      >Goggins's character is introduced in a scene showing that another character buried him alive, only digging him up to periodically cut off pieces of his body, and keeping him from going feral with an IV drip of [UNNAMED ANTI-FERAL DRUG THAT GHOULS NEED NOW]
      >Goggins is able to regenerate while buried live
      >Rose is immediately ghoulified when Shady Sands is blown up in 2282
      >in 14 years of existing as a highly irradiated feral ghoul, she's still looking like a charred rack of ribs with a big bite taken out of her
Should we assume that there's a limit to ghoul regeneration, no matter the amount of time you spend sitting in one place? Do feral ghouls not regenerate?

all ghouls are healed by radiation, they can even lose limbs but reattach them if they wanted to. there is no 1 concrete reason why some ghouls go feral, and i doubt theres a special drug to stop it outright. i always assumed it was a willpower thing, if the ghoul was still in touch with their humanity and wanted to live on as a 'normal' enough person then they wouldn't turn feral, but if the ghoul was antisocial and living out on their own there's a higher chance of them turning feral

          >and i doubt theres a special drug to stop it ouright
          Did you watch the show?

The difference is Zelda isn't a series that is, on every level, about the past. People nit-pick the Fallout canon as hard as they do because the setting and its themes are both predicated on a series of loosely (but logically) aligned dominoes. I mean, for frick's sake, the ENTIRE purpose of the NCR as a faction is that by recreating civilization in the image of the republic, it is recreating the vices of the republic: corruption, greed, etc.
The timeline and canon of Fallout matter much more to it than that of Zelda. I hate Zelda timeline shit like you wouldn't believe. All I'm saying is stop thinking in absolutes and apply different standards to different media when appropriate.

Lucy's sub-plot is literally just Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 mashed together

      >protagonist's son is kidnapped
      Lucy's father is kidnapped
      >Lone Wanderer leaves the vault to follow his father
Lucy leaves the vault to follow her father
      >protagonist's father is actually the leader of the Institute, an organization that wants to use the Commonwealth as a source of scientific experimentation from the shadows
Lucy's father is actually one of the executive officers of Vault-Tec, and organization that wants to use the apocalypse and Wasteland as a source of social experimentation from the shadows
      >Project Purity can give the Capitol Wasteland clean drinking water, but the protagonist requires an activation code from the Lone Wanderer's dad and a GECK
Moldaver's cold fusion generator can give the LA Wasteland practically infinite power, but Moldaver requires and activation code from Lucy's dad and the cold fusion cell
      >The Lone Wanderer makes the ultimate sacrifice, dying in the process of turning on Project Purity, and the last thing he sees are the water of life coursing though its centrifuge...
Moldaver sacrifices her life in the process of turning on her cold fusion generator because Lucy needs to survive for season :^), and the last thing she sees is the LA Wasteland light up the evening sky as she holds Rose's hand

You know what everyone's favorite sub-plots are? Goggins doing his 100th playthrough of Fallout: Amazon with his 10 AGI, 10 LCK, critical VATS build, and small frame Norm "the lean machine" MacLean stealth'ing and science'ing his way into Vault 31. The only people with lower INT than Maximus are people who fell for Lucy's sub-plot.

                >Vault 33, 32, and 31 are in Santa Monica to the west of LA, because you can see the pier
                >even though Santa Monica is a thriving and dense commercial district, it is an empty wasteland of sand and shrubs
                >even though LA is only 15 miles to the east of Santa Monica and would be a much higher priority target in a nucelar conflict, it is much more intact
                >cuts to drone shot tracking toward the Santa Monica mountains to the north, implying Lucy is walking north
                So far, not so bad
                >it's difficult to tell where the BoS base is supposed to be, but it was filmed at Wendover AFB in Utah
                >it's either actually Utah, or a stand-in for a location like Edwards AFB or an inland flat north of it
                >Maximus and Titus drop down into chaparral, which could be fricking anywhere in California
                We're already lost
                >cut to the Doctor in a temperate forest which looks NOTHING like California because even the coastal temperate forests in NorCal are full of conifers, whereas every tree we see is deciduous
                >cut to another drone shot to transition from Doctor to Maximus and Titus
This is a confusing one because it looks like a CGI combination of a desert and temperate forest WITH conifers - but also skyscrapers?
                >Maximus and Titus enter the not-California forest
                >in the following scene where Maximus is experimenting with the power armor, he encounters the chicken-fricker on the coast, meaning he's actually in SoCal

                >cut back to Lucy talking to the wastelander about Filly
                >cuts to establishing shot of Filly in the distance
                >establishing shot looks like a thicket of small shrubs, not a forest, in front of a mountain range that's possibly the San Gabriel mountains north of LA, depending on how long Lucy has been traveling
                >cut to Lucy walking into Filly
                >it's the fricking forest again
                >Lucy leaves Filly with the doctor
                >cuts to them walking away from LAX, which is southeast of Santa Monica
At this point we've completely lost the plot
                >Lucy continues walking away from LAX, which is a desolate wasteland like Santa Monica even though there's lots of corporate offices in the area like Boeing, AT&T, and the LA Times
                >is back in the fricking forest AGAIN, but this time there's a lake
This is extremely confusing, but my best guess is that this is near Whittier or Anaheim to the east of LAX. Again, the issue is that the forest looking nothing like CA forests.
                >Goggins catches up to Lucy and takes her hostage
                >suddenly they're walking through ruins that are identical to the ones in the Santa Monica drone shot

And this isn't accounting for the part where Thaddeus suddenly crosses the border into fricking Canada or something at the Red Rocket gas station. It's really difficult to tell when or where any character is traveling at any given time, even as someone who has lived in and around LA for most of their life and driven up the coast to NorCal multiple times.

That both helps and doesn't help. It helps physically place it (NE of Santa Monica), but it doesn't really resolve the LAX thing or why the forest around Filly looks absolutely nothing like SoCal even if you let nature retake the city for 200 years.
I'm not being autistic about this to nit-pick, I'm just saying that even as someone who has lived 30 years in this area I had a hard time following it.

The only reasonable explanation is that the forest is non-natural due to importation. But even then, it’s way to big to have been growing in limited habitats for 200+ years

Why does it matter what faction you pick now when everything just ends up destroyed anyway? And it's not for any kind of real important story reason it's just because Todd fundamentally misunderstands Fallout and thinks that it's supposed to be a wacky scavenger theme park instead of about the rebuilding of society. He thinks people would just loot the ruins of cities for the next thousand years.

Todd said that the events of NV happened, but Shady Sands still exploded, which means the NCR is no more. What Todd really means is that all the shit that happened in New Vegas can't matter because they can't give it a canon ending, so they decided to wipe the slate clean and start over A G A I N. Also helps sell the show as a post-apocalyptic world filled with shithuts instead of places like New Reno and Vault City where society is clawing its way back.

They used the bad ending from the DLC. Misted and nuked. The way to answer the question, without choosing any of the factions that people actually seriously considered.
      It's a copout answer.

      >no cars
says who? you're driving around a junker in FO2, you're telling me no one else ever fixed or built new cars since then?

You don't see anyone else with a car, and NV shows that the one working car ended up in an accident in the Mojave. Vertibirds are a rare and big deal.

Talking about the same topic is not a problem because the topic is always scoped to a particular product anyway, and they are internally consistent.

They aren't internally consistent, and the entire point of the canon discussion it to find the agreed upon events, so the actual discussion/understanding can happen.
If one person says that this is canon, but the other person doesn't, then they're not going to agree on what happened, and no real discussion can happen. No understanding can take place. Which is why people want consistency, from release to release. If there's no consistency, then there's no point in caring. Which doesn't cause people to just consume and get hyped for next product, it makes them quit.

fictional (eg mythic) objects have more permanence than real objects. religion is but one example

Religions shift and change with the times. They're permanence exists in name only.

That's the cool thing, nothing happened because it's all make believe. Consistency between different products adds no ability to discuss or understand things, and inconsistency does nothing to take it away. In this very thread we have many posters including yourself discussing points from the new show and various fallout games despite their lack of consistency.

        >If there's no consistency, then there's no point in caring. Which doesn't cause people to just consume and get hyped for next product, it makes them quit.
Good, frick them, they have no inherent right to our hype. Force them to make us care by producing an amazing product, not by virtue of controlling the legacies of old amazing products.

"There's no point to discuss anything".
I hope Bethesda is paying you for this.
          >Consistency between different products adds no ability to discuss or understand things, and inconsistency does nothing to take it away
Literally false. If you see the police shoot someone in one mystery story, but the other mystery story in the series reveals that it was a dream, then the police didn't shoot someone. But if a later person decides that the "it was a dream reveal" wasn't true, then what?
You would have two different people saying "The police didn't shoot someone" and "The police did shoot someone". Only 1 is true. It's not all "Art is up to your interpretation" bs.
          > In this very thread we have many posters including yourself discussing points from the new show and various fallout games despite their lack of consistency.
I've only been pointing out inconsistencies that ruin 1/2/NV.

You got some brown on your nose. I really hope you get paid for this.

You damn well know that we have no such control, when shills like you, act like this.
Rings of Power was a flop, because the nerds rejected it. We don't need morons like you, shilling for Bethesda's defence.
As we're the ones saying that the show is shit, and you're going "why do you care", which enables Bethesda to keep shovelling more shit.
You don't even realize what you're doing. Which means you're doing it for free. How shameful.

you do know the NCR has like, proper industry and such right? It's not some backwater shithole, it's a fully functioning democratic republic and society. You think they found all those service rifles and ammo? Hell they're even modifying suits of power armor by the time NV rolls around.

          >It’s also been 200+ years since they’ve been built, extremely limited parts since none have been made for 200+ years, any parts that are rubber have to have survived for 200+ years, someone has to be willing to sell it to you
literally all of these things happened in FO2, so yes I believe it possible. all you needed was a fuel cell converter and some MONEY because they stopped using caps after FO1.

The NCR was a corrupt bureaucratic shithole, stretched too thin to defend itself. They didn't have enough of a military force, to take the Mojave.
          >literally all of these things happened
It happened once. There's no other working vehicles shown, outside of the Vertibird. Which is why the Vertibird is such a big deal.

            >others aren't shown working
sure but they're mentioned, the NCR has a truck repair station in their base in NV and they run trains for supplies.

The NCR has functioning rail lines as far west as the mojave. Other than that your right that the NCR was stretched thin and was relying on expanding into new areas to sustain themselves. They would be in an absolute shit position if they got suddenly cut off spreading west into the mojave on top of the president potentially being assassinated during NV.

    >There, everything you hate about the TV show is now fixed
not quite, I'm still baffled by their decision to add more vaults despite The Master's whole deal being finding vaults in the region, and the move of Shady Sands miles south for seemingly no reason. The brotherhood's increased military presence is also weird considering they got chased out of the region in the end FO2 and if you're correct in that the greater NCR is still fully intact, only makes this point even more confusing.

they should've just set the show in a different region, none of the show relies on the factions and political climate of the region before the show's start.

I’m convinced todd suggested the west and they just decided to go for it. Everyone involved seems to say they only played the Bethesda games so really having it set in a place that has little to nothing to do with those makes no sense unless they’re trying to clean the slate for future games. I mean it feels weird how determined he is to keep the show canon when he could just have easily said “no it’s not canon” and it would have done nothing. People would still buy Fallout shit, and consume.

What gets me is if Todd really wanted to nuke the NCR or have another big restart in the region, Obsidian gave him that possibility with the end of Lonesome Road, which to be honest was a bit of a moronic story on its own way. All the writers had to do was make it consistent with the end of that DLC, the characters in the show wouldn't even need to know who launched the nuke, but nope.

      Anonymous

you only nuked the long 15 in lonesome road as a means of cutting of their convoys into the region, not the NCR proper.

        Anonymous

If he literally has to show Shady Sands get nuked, then yeah, but if he wants the NCR dead, Lonesome Road is a much more realistic way of doing it. Strangling their economy is a much more realistic way of killing a nation than bombing a capital.
They would just be gone, and their cities would be torn apart by raiders/civil wars.

          Anonymous

eh it depends, I don't think cutting the NCR off from vegas would strangle their economy, not like they were exporting much outta there outside of a portion of the sharecropper yields and SOME electricity. cutting off the convoy would doom the NCR in Nevada, but I don't think it would cause the collapse of the entire government, at least not in the timeframe provided.

            Anonymous

Which should show you how rare they are. It's been 200 years, the pre-war civilian cars are gone. We see it all around.

You're both fricking moronic. The NCR was overstretched and needed to fix its priorities, but there was no existential problems it was faced with at the time. Even outright losing Nevada wouldn't have mattered all that much and might even do them some good, which was the point of the Hanlon quest.

The franchise began in the public's eye with Fallout 3 when millions of people played it for the first time. That is what it is built on in popular culture. Before that is widely considered "the old stuff". It is looked at as a curiosity, not a bedrock of what Fallout must be. A small section of fans will enjoy the games enough that they decide "oh I should check out the old stuff" and either get filtered or play the game and view it through the lens the sequels gave them.
It is not like Halo or Star Wars where their very first installments were their greatest hits and everyone either started with the originals or knew someone that did, and the popular culture formed to view all subsequent products through the lens the originals gave them. Fallout originalists are a vast minority, which is why nobody cares to cater to them.

It boils down to the show being so poorly written that it's difficult to infer Vault-Tec's actual motivations for instigating the Great War, or infer whether the writers even wrote it this way consciously. The only logical explanation for what Vault-Tec is doing is power, not profit. They're winning the "game of capitalism" by changing the rules of engagement. Instead of earning more profit and having to compete with other players who are also earning more and more profit, what if you just flipped over the game board while holding as many resources as you can in your hand? They're doing the same thing that the Enclave did.

The thing is that even though profit isn't the point, having access to cold fusion technology is still really relevant to their plan, because their plan is out-surviving their competitors. What better way to buy time than with fricking infinite energy? By all accounts they should have held onto this resource somewhere. So the answer is either that they just "forgot" that cold fusion would be of great benefit to the likelihood of their plan working out (lmao), there was a circumstance that interfered with implementing it (lol), or the writers are just moronic, didn't think this far ahead, and are hoping that they'll think of a good answer before season 2.

like 90% of the plot threads are just season 2 bait. the only one's that even resolved is moldaver, unless we're going to get tons of moldaver flashbacks in season 2 even though every pre-war flashback has been from goggins's perspective.
the more i think about this, the stupider it becomes. they wrote a mystery homie character who had an extremely disappointing death after doing nothing except exposition dumping for lucy's sake, and they didn't even answer basic questions like
                >how did she survive 200 years

                >how did she become known and feared by everyone in the wasteland

It says the enclave had access to the vaults, which makes sense, because of course the US government would have demanded vault tec hand over the codes to the bunkers they were building on US soil, but there's no evidence that value tec persisted after the great war at all, let alone persisted until and then worked with the emergent enclave.

President Richardson tells you in FO2 that the Enclave is Vault-Tec and vise versa.

    >everything you hate about the TV show is now fixed.
I'm sorry to tell you buddy but this is not remotely close to "everything" i hate about the tv show, because what I hate about the tv show is basically everything. Every design, every bit of dialogue, every character assassination, it's hot garbage for normie morons,
Exactly the same as rings of power, same dogshit in literally every regard trying to yoink an ip and alter it to sell to normies and push their social engineering and opinions through.
99.99999% of modern 'writers' are incompetent and write worse than a 14 year old child picked at random.

There are quite literally 3 major recurring characters that show up in the show, and 2 are in one scene while the third is fricking vault boy. What character did they assassinate???

Fallout 1 and 2 aren't realistic to a post nuclear apocalypse
Fallout 3 is more accurate to what a post nuclear world should be like
    But still really inaccurate
Fallout should be like "A Canticle for Leibowitz"
    They'd be a good game
Literally a post nuclear apocalyptic Red Dead Redemption

        Canticle is perfectly realistic

The wandering israelite is perfectly realistic as it was described in The Bible
And radiation may very well cause "monsters" after successive generations being exposed to radiation, it's something we don't know as such conditions do not exist currently

Haven't watched the show yet, debating whether I should or not - is it any good, truthfully? I initially was going to avoid it due to all these retcons and lore issues that are fricking it up (and the stupid shit like the power armor stuff and dick dialogue), but everywhere I go I see people massively praising the show. Is it a genuine good watch as a Fallout fan or is it just normie slop, which is why it's praised so high?

Even ignoring the games entirely, it's poorly written pozzed dogshit. Here's something that sums up the ethos of the show: an evil capitalist nukes an entire city because he's mad his wife left him to be in a lesbian relationship with a heckin scientist who figured out cold fusion.

Depends, if you are a fan of Fallout 3 and 4, you'll have a good time. If you are a fan of 1, 2 or NV, you'll just get pissed off. If you are not a fan of the games, the show is... fine, if not exactly world shattering.
      >in b4 "but Amazon is referencing so many things from old games
Yeah, they are doing Bethesda's take on Wast Coast and it makes me want to stab myself in the eye.

The show isn't fine even if it were original IP. The dialogue is fricking awful, the fights are stupid, the setting is boring, the antagonists are morons, and its pozzed as all hell.

Ignoring the lorerape it's just mediocre at best
It has okay production values (which is almost a miracle in this day and age) but all the action is awkward and embarrassing

Why do New Vegas fans act like they’re the center of universe that everyone is out to get when it’s like the least successful 3d fallout outside of 76

3 and Vegas are estimated to have about the same number of copies sold.

NTA but one would also argue 100x more people played NV in the last decade than 3
in fact, I'm guessing the numbers are like this for the last decade
        >F4 100 players
        >FNV 40 players
        >F76 30 players
        >F3 10 players
