- You can assign companions to ships you're not using (or dismiss them). It sounds like your fleet can have other companions flying them.
- There are multiple robot companions. You could technically entirely crew your ship with just robots. Todd doesn't want to oversell it, though.
- There is radio, but its local to one location.
- If you steal a ship, they're all upgradable.
- You have to register a ship after stealing it.
- All the ships in the game are built using the built in ship editor - anything you see, you can build too.
- Ship building is a late game activity. Needs skills and costs a LOT of credits.
- Very happy with Creation Engine 2. Have really pushed the tech. Things not shown include volumetric fog which interacts with GI lighting, and physics and gravity changes under the hood which they lean in on.
- "Starfield is a modders paradise". Mods are supported, and we plan to participating in modding community.
- Outposts is a deep system. Requires resources, character skills, you can connect outposts between planets with your ships and crews. Not meant as an early player system.
- Outposts can be an economy generator.
- Bethesda love the game, they're humbled by the excitement, the excitement is fuel over the last two months until release.

You "explore around your ship" because that's where all the content will be procedurally generated. You can circumnavigate an entire planet if you want to, and that's the reason there are no vehicles. It really depends on the age of the space fairing Human society. If it's still early on having a single major culture is good and give the feeling of frontiersmanship as you expand out into the stars exploring and homesteading. If it's later into a setting having multiple cultures and nations that have risen and fallen due to the distance and difficulties maintaining a centralized government and culture is good, with or without other species, as it gives a good lived in feeling to the setting and can provide a lot of interesting set pieces and plot threads.

They have that system that procedurally generates a few points of interest wherever the player lands though, so there wouldn't be much of a reason for them to -not- allow players to land on all of them. With the system doing the work for them it's really not costing them any more dev time to go from 100 planets to 10,000. They just have a pool of random encounters or tiles or whatever that it rolls from, so there'll be a lot of repeated content, but still.
With that said I'd still expect a few gas giants or whatever, it would be weird if there weren't any.

You can put outposts on any planet (several per planets if you want apparently), and populate them with NPCs, although If it's like in FO4 the social aspects are gonna be extremely limited, so I don't know about the dictatorship part.

Seems to me like it's banking on the average player finding the thought of exploring individual planets really fun, even though it's looking more and more likely that most of them will have frick-all to do. Few will even have life and even less will have in-depth, hand-crafted content. The rest are gonna be barren balls of rock with resources and radiant quest busywork to give the illusion of content. If you're not the type that finds exploration for the sake of exploration satisfying I feel like this game is gonna be pretty fricking boring.

To sum it up simply: with how the colonies are set up, they don't really need long-distance vehicles when they have Spacefaring vessels. None of the Settlements are that close together, so it's more time-efficient to just launch a ship and follow a ballistic trajectory to a settlement on the other side of the continent than to interact at all with the surface, particularly when you basically need to set up a whole load of infrastructure to make those trips in the first place.
That being said, there'd still be a market for short-range vehicles, so there's some amount of stupidity here, though it's entirely probable that we will see vehicles hanging around, just we won't be able to drive them because load-in shenanigans.
This tracks with my time in the Middle East (a similarly dangerous and undeveloped area). You use aircraft to travel anywhere outside of the base.
I was thinking it would be more useful for uninhabited planets. There might not be much terrain suitable for landing, you could transport more resources back to the ship, you could transport heavy equipment from the ship and not having to rely on ship fast travel to cover long distances would be nice

Atmospheric flight with a space-capable vessel is actually less efficient and far more time consuming than entering orbit then re-landing on a planet (over a certain range, of course). You basically only have to expend fuel at the start and end of your voyage, and let gravity and a lack of air resistance carry you to where you need to go.
It's the reason why ICBMs are better at carrying payloads over long-distance than cruise missiles are: They simply don't have to deal with the air slowing them down.

100% of it, i'm pretty sure the game will toss you a HUD showing the important stats.
All of it. At best your character will move a control stick whenever you interact with WASD or left analog stick. Maybe press a few unmarked buttons during the landing cutscene
It would be easy enough in concept to make the doodads on the screens react to actions you take in the ship even if there's no observable logic to the changes. Speeding up increases engine temperature, gyroscope bobs and weaves with the movements of the ship, stuff like that.
The console itself is full of buttons and readings that have an observable purpose (minus the rage quit button) and some of them do get pushed during the grav dive spool up. I think they've overall put some care into the thing you'll be seeing out of the corner of your eye for the entire time you're out flying the ship.

it's definitely something important in the main quest
my dad works at bethesda, you get the ability to travel through black holes once you get far enough in the constellation storyline and they work like wormholes that move you around the galaxy. the goal of the game from that point is to reach the center of the galaxy and make contact with the aliens who live on the other side. they reward you with the ability to terraform any planet and fill the galaxy with life.
