TODD HOWARD CONFIRMS FNV WAS NOT RETCONNED

THE BOMB HIT SHADY SANDS AFTER NEW VEGAS'S EVENTS - WAS THE SHOWRUNNERS IDEA

According to Howard, showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet came to him with the idea to blow up Shady Sands, something Howard says shocked him at first. But the event would serve as a catalyst for the main characters of the Fallout show and the showrunners worked with Howard and the Bethesda team to ensure it remained consistent with the games.

“And we talked through it and it was, ‘This would be a pretty impactful story moment that a lot of things anchor on,"' Howard says.

But for anyone confused about how the city could be blown up by the time the show takes place, Howard explains all the details of the timeline should line up. “We’re careful about the timeline,” he says. “There might be a little bit of confusion in some places. But everything that happened in the previous games, including New Vegas, happened. We’re very careful about that.”

“All I can say is we’re threading it tighter there, but the bombs fall just after the events of New Vegas.”

      >some sort of massive "fall" in shady sands had occurred that no one talked about in New Vegas
      >shady sands is nuked after its "fall" by Vault-Tec
      >the NCR has seemingly been completely wiped out from their heartland, barely any remnants remain, all of their infrastructure and massive population has basically been reduced to nothing
      >the Brotherhood of Steel goes from barely existing at all to being an immensely powerful force in less than two decades. Despite this, they are depicted in the show as being extremely incompetent and their culture is not faithful to the games
      >Caesar's Legion is nonexistent
      >New Vegas is shown to be largely/completely abandoned with destroyed securitrons and crashed vertibirds
      >Vault-Tec is hinted to have started the great war by nuking America and/or China
      >House was aware they might do this and was at the meeting when it was discussed, meaning that House's story he told in New Vegas was largely a lie.
      >Sinclair was also at this meeting and was representing Big MT
      >power armor, the technology that was so successful it allowed America to push into China, is shown to have a vulnerability that allows its wearer to be killed by a single shot to the front of the suit
      >Vault-Tec are now a major faction
      >the Brotherhood of Steel are now a major faction
      >somehow, the Enclave has returned

In conclusion, the NCR, House, and the Legion have essentially been wiped off the map, replaced by the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave, and Vault-Tec, who are now the major factions of the setting. A single season of bethesda's and amazon's "fallout" have undone everything that Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout New Vegas had built. The west coast is now the east coast wearing a cowboy hat.

I could forgive the obvious timeline flub. I can forgive Vault-Tec being comically evil since it's already been thoroughly established in multiple games that they are, in fact, just that. I would even have literally zero issue with the NCR's capital getting cratered by Overseer Dale, even if his motivations are questionable, at best. There's no confirmation that the NCR is completely wiped out, at least not yet, anyway. Everyone saying that are just kneejerking "Well if if the show didn't show it explicitly it MUST be true!" morons. (See the copypasta above trying to say that the Legion is gone despite nothing in the show indicating that at all.)

No, all that I can handwave away. But Shady Sands is in the completely wrong location. Like hundreds of miles away, wrong. I cannot suspend my disbelief for that.

            Explain yourself, Todd. Now.

Yeah people talking about Bethesda having a BoS boner are also being moronic. Usually it's because "they changed what the BoS was all about." The only game where they were "hurrdurr the generic good guys" was Fo3. Then in Fo4 they course corrected (perhaps too much so) into making them straight up techno-fascists that kill anything mutated or non-human on sight. Now the show is just more of that, and people are still shitting their diapers, over what I can only assume is them simply existing at all.

          Two reasons.
          >Iconography
BoS is the poster boy of the Bethesda's Fallout
          >Bethesda treats Fallout like its a TES with guns
Every Elder Scrolls has a simple plot, you are the main protagonist and the ancient evil has awoken and you must destroy it, simple and direct, its fits the TES approach of good entities vs evil entities.
Fallout even raiders have a reason for why they rape and kill, the master had a logical reason to why he wanted to turn everyone into mutants, because he wants to save them.

No, they couldn't have. In fact being displaced in Nevada by House would have probably been the best thing for the NCR. An economic blow, for certain, but it would stem the budget bleeding of trying to occupy the territory, and also create a big fricking buffer state so that the NCR no longer has to invest in defense against the Legion. It's not like any of the NCR's own infrastructure had been damaged in the war.

People are acting like this show “de-canonizes” things when it’s literally just adding new lore.

It has the same weight as an entirely new game and progresses the world farther than ever before.

The NCR, the whole meeting of the vault tech executives, the ghoul is basically vault boy, and fricking New Vegas?

This one season has so much to discuss and I’m assuming people just haven’t finished it yet or think it’s not canon but let’s start talking about it.

OMG THE COWBOY BEING THE VAULT BOY GAVE ME LIFE. The MEETING where they discuss the fricking vaults?? AND MR HOUSE this show is an actual masterpiece and I feel for those who didn’t play any of the games before hand, because though the show is great on its own, they are missing so much satisfaction in how perfectly done this show is. There’s little lore dumps all over the place!

Oh man and when Barb said THE line at the meeting, I got fricking chills.

Seriously, I feel sorry for people that will hate on this adaptation. Fallout fans eating good if this gets a season 2.

Really well. It has great reviews from actual viewers, and is generating massive levels of Fallout discussion online, which was the point from a business perspective. It isn't coincidence that there was a huge Fallout sale on Steam. They probably made a shitload of extra sales (they call it "lift" in advertising) because of the show. It's also already greenlit for season 2, and got a massive $25 million tax credit from California to move production there from New York. It's pretty successful by any metric.

like this shill. does this look organic to you? no. this looks like someone regurgitated a reddit post from chat GPT with insane, barely legible thoughts strung together about how successful and cool it is.

But you are a shill. These are opinions no sane person would have. The show is quite terrible, even if you exclude the Fallout lore and the story discussion, because it's extremely poorly written.

Nobody says this. Even if you exclude all the previous fallout games; this show has internal inconsistencies within its own story. Locations and characters move from set to set and there's no logical consistency to actions.

Unironically what would the "fall of Shady Sands" have even been, if not the bombing? And for that matter, why would Hank MacLean specifically nuke Shady Sands if it had already fallen?

This is very obviously Bethesda cleaning up their and Amazon's mess, because they didn't realize how hard it would piss people off to move Shady Sands south 300+ miles just to nuke it, presumably before the events of New Vegas (where no "collapse" of the capital of the NCR is ever mentioned). >what would the Fall of Shady Sands have even been
The NCR is noted to be in the process of collapse during New Vegas. Water's drying up, farmers suffer failing crops, the Brotherhood War devalued the shit out of their currency, both public and internal morale regarding the military is in the shitter, raiders are still a big problem, Kimball is ineffective as President and corruption is rampant, etc. etc. There's also the fact that "the Fall of X" doesn't necessarily describe a singular event; the "Fall of Rome" is a decades-long process that's separate from just the Sacking of Rome.

As such, the Fall of Shady Sands is the collapse of the capital but would just be starting in 2277, matching what's described to the player in 2281, and that they didn't recover. If anything, this is all just a soft-confirmation that the NCR lost the battle for the Mojave, as that was a crucial victory for resources and public confidence

Shady Sands has had about 100 years to grow by the time of that image. With the level of wealth we see people describing in Fallout New Vegas, I think it made sense to depict Shady Sands as having basically achieved something that looks like a pre-war city.

No, it doesn't you fricking moron. It's simply not possible for them to have such an insane production of steel beams or the manpower/technology/energy to build such massive structures. You can't just shape metal with your mind and the production becomes even more complicated when you factor in the different microstructures and tempering techniques which results in vastly different mechanical characteristics. And even if they somehow managed to produce all the materials and tools required, they wouldn't have the advanced understanding of structural joints or vibration analysis required. Their buildings would just start shaking and collapse at somewhat high wind speeds or tiny earth tremors. Not to mention that they don't even need skyscrapers. They have so much horizontal space with a small population of 30 000. It's obviously supposed to be pre-war ruins.

Vault-Tec is part of the Enclave. They don't want anyone existing besides them, as established in the previous games. They would absolutely want to wipe out the NCR if they could, being a large armed society outside of their control full of mutants and wastelanders.

In the show, Vault-Tec is the company that owns cold fusion tech pre-war, and leaves it unused because they think it would ruin their business. Post-war, we see that an Enclave scientist steals the cold fusion tech and is trying to escape with it. So we can infer that, as implied by other things in the Fallout series, Vault-Tec was part of the Enclave all along. This is why the Enclave had Vault-Tec's secrets.

            Anonymous

Vault tec was not even a defense contractor, let alone part of the pre-war US government, let alone part of the enclave. They DID NOT EXIST until this moronic TV show.

              Anonymous

Fallout 2 established that the Enclave had, for some reason, the ability to monitor the still-active vault experiments. The implication was that Vault-Tec either became, was a part of, or had been compromised by the Enclave.

Also, the Enclave isn't so much the actual government as it was the "shadow" government. It's what people would call the "deep state". It was always a collection of corporations and politicians that had a secret alliance pulling all the strings before the war, and then survived to become the group of scientists and power armored goons we meet in the games.

                Anonymous

They had access to vault tec's vaults because they were constructed during the great war, and obviously the US government would have demanded back doors to any kind of military grade fortifications built on their own soil (which the enclave would eventually inherit). Vault Tec was a private company selling holes in the ground to rich gays, figuring either the world doesn't end and now vault tec investors are rich, or the world does end and so it doesn't matter either way.

That's still the problem. It's not that New Vegas was retconned, it's that the show's new twist on events makes New Vegas pointless. If you were an NCRgay literally everything you did for that faction is meaningless shortly after the game concludes. If you were someone looking to rule New Vegas, the entire place gets fricked over, and the Legion may as well be a non-canon conclusion one way or another.
They effectively made it that the only shit that matters is the Courier presumably fricking off from New Vegas while killing off most of the people involved with the storyline immediately afterwards, and did it in the stupidest way possible. Nothing new for FO having to close continuity gaps here or there, but painful because it still feels like a dick move.

Honestly, my big beef is why even have such big plot things in this? Why not just have a self-contained story that could take place in the canon but didn't need big things happening to the rest of the lore? Why suddenly nuke Shady Sands, destroy the NCR spontaneously, and have Vault-Tec be shitheads to cause hell on Earth? If the showrunner was coming to Beth with these ideas, then it's literally Bethesda just letting someone fanfic their own attempts to make their story super important into the continuity because frick it, why not?

But fallout 1,2 and new vegas have never been canon to bethesda fallout. Rather, bethesda fallout has an alternate line of similar events in it's past that they draw upon. I don't understand how people can accept the fricking hyrule historia alternate timelines bullshit, but don't understand this.

      Anonymous

Because nothing actually says or establishes timelines, just Sawyer or Avellone wanting to do their own thing and keep their own story going independent of whatever Bethesda was doing at the time. You could reasonably just have these games doing their own shit mostly ignoring 3 or 4. Now you HAVE to divorce them as separate canons because they're skullfricking the classic stuff to prop up Bethesda's.

Nintendo did not establish the hyrule historia. It's a third party product made "for fun" that they do not consider canon when designing the games. There is a blurb like three pages in explaining this.

And even if we go by your version, each game being a unique experience is something Nintendo is consistent on, if they tell you Majora's Mask is a sequel to Ocarina of Time it doesn't contradict Ocarina of Time. Todd and Nolan comparatively are trying to convince you that Breath of the Wild and Tears of Kingdom is canon to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

This has never been an issue as Fallout 1 despite having many outcomes has a set canon ending for everything, 2's manual literally has an entire section telling you the canon ending of the game. I think you're misunderstanding why people are so upset. it's not that the idea that NV would've been retconned, it's that the entire nation state of the NCR was somehow completely erased by a single town that was moved miles south of where it used to be getting nuked. even if the timeline wasn't poorly communicated to the viewer, it's still taking a massive dump on what the was the point of the original 2 games, and the progression of the setting between them. It's a pretty transparent excuse to hit the reset button on the west coast instead of actually trying to tangle with the show taking place in a fully functioning democratic republic, while also retroactively making some story elements from the first game more nonsensical by just adding more vaults to the region to the boneyard despite The Master's presence there.

vault 13 was in a cave, and it IS eventually found if you don't complete the story fast enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSlBlQqVZtU
The entrance to the 3 vaults in the show is sticking out of the ground in the open next to the coast, and if they can blow off one vault door, they can blow off any vault door.
        >the rest of your post
        see

the real answer is that in the game those vaults never existed, and we must now make up contrivances to explain such a blatant and silly oversight because lord knows the writers won't

Unironically. And this specific shot was made litereally without any actors on screen, you literally don't have to ring up Ella to look at moronic chalkboard to redo it, all you have to do is just change the date to, let's say 2282-2283 and let's say Maximus is just a moron.

My guess is that they can't and 2277 is a locked in date and maybe changing it now will change how Hank, Moldaver and Maximus were written for future seasons. It's very likely the finger pointing between Bethesda and TV series writing staff is hot as frick right now, like Todd throws a date of possible nuking at them that's not 2277 and they shoot him down for what they are trying to do with Fallout.

Yes. And it was becoming a problem by 2281. It was not an issue in 2277.
            >including Hanlon who things the NCR are heading towards famine
No, Hanlon thinks that the NCR is simply biting off more than it can chew. It's Thomas Hildern who suggests that the NCR needs to improve its agricultural output, and he's in the R&D office specifically funded to make that a reality. The most charitable reading of his analysis is that he's right, there is a problem, and the NCR is actively investing in solving it. An uncharitable interpretation is that Hildern was exaggerating a problem in order to keep the money flowing into his department.

Bethesda regularly shits on the canon for the elder scrolls, their own fricking IP. Of course they won't give a shit about inconsistencies with previous fallout lore, they'll just say only what the newest thing we're shilling says is canon and anything that contradicts it is overwritten by the new thing. It is writing on par with capeshit that TES fans have tolerated for years through moronic plot devices like the "warp in the west" that handwave shit away which can't be implemented in a non magical setting.

Yeah, Todd played the original games as a kid. In a recent video, Tim Cain (who I personally think is a bit of a gay but that's neither here nor there) said he watched Todd and his brother arguing about who bought their copy of Fallout and who was the one that "borrowed" it from the other. Todd really is a huge RPG-nerd and likes the games. People just hate on him because it's funny to bully a manlet nerd and he is basically the face of everything Bethesda, good or bad. It always gets me how people, knowing that the nuke happened later, still insist that this "fall" doesn't make sense. IRL, historians discuss the "fall of Rome" all the time. If you go read about it or watch a documentary, it is NEVER just a discussion of Rome getting sacked. They always start much earlier, and will tell you about Rome thriving at the height of its power, and then how small problems piled up, and then eventually culminated in the capital being unable to defend itself and being destroyed. That's exactly what the "fall of Shady Sands" is supposed to be.

We have plenty of New Vegas NPCs talk about how corrupt and shitty things are back in Shady Sands or other parts of the NCR, but they wouldn't call it the "fall" because maybe Shady Sands could bounce back from all that stuff. But if the city is a giant crater, it makes sense for people to say, "Shady Sands blew up in year 228X, but it really fell back in 2277 when [insert political event] happened."

People say the fall of rome when it was actually sacked and collapsed, not when the bad shit happened which facilitate that eventual sacking years earlier. They discuss why it eventually happened, but they do not say that the fall happened before it actually, literally did, because that would be moronic.

But also, 2277 was literally the absolute peak of the NCR. Calling it "the fall of shady sands" would be like saying the fall of rome happened during the rule of fricking Trajan.

        >Uh, really fricking far. It should take them several days walking to get there.
        >Hm. Well, we could do that, but it would probably seem like pointless filler or a weird to timeskip a trip that should have lots of dialogue and relationship-building.

    - How were vaults 33,32,31 and 4 not discovered by the Master despite being in the LA area? Especially when these vaults had their entrances not concealed. For that matter why were these vaults not contacted in it's 100 years of history? When the NCR was in charge of the Boneyard and all of Southern California.
    - Why doesn't the BoS utilize any other suit beyond the T60? This is also a gripe with their depiction in FO4. They should employ a mixture of T51, T45, T60 and Enclave APA.
    - Why doesn't the faction famous for their energy weapons use any?
    - When did Shady Sands stop being 'the first capital of the NCR'? The sign was clearly made when there was still a city there. It was still the capital in FNV (2281) and Todd Howard has stated the city was nuked shortly after FNV.
    - Where did Lucy's father get the nuke from? How did he blow up the city? Whenever pre-war nuclear weapons were brough up in the games they were a big deal.
    - Why aren't there any signs of the NCR's existence in Southern California outside of the Shady Sands crater? Without it there is no evidence of a country existing there for 100 years.
    - Why was Shady Sands moved hundreds of miles to be in the LA area?
    - 'Somehow... the Enclave returned'
    - What happened to the rest of the NCR after Shady Sands was destroyed? What happened to places like Adytum or the Hub?

Each settlement is forced to join either way. You're never actually meant to say no because the NCR will pressure you to do so when they own everything around you or via false-flag attacks. This has already been gone over since F2's Vault City's questline on how the NCR deals with acquiring cities that do not bend the knee.

Yes but those settlements will not think of themselves as the NCR and wont have alot of pride in it. Where as everyone in the Legion is only part of the Legion. This matters when you start conscripting for a war that nobody in their nothern territories cares about. Of couse they would frick off once the actual NCR goverment, which is mainly located in SS, gets nuked. NCR core territories are mainly just the F1 settlements. F2 settlements have less loyalty.

This. We see a sherif guy with only two lackeys claiming to be president of the NCR. Cooper questions him about it and the guy just say, "Well, why not?" Meanwhile, there's a whole fricking base of people flying NCR flags not far from there. So clearly the NCR is fractured somehow, but there are plenty of people that see it as the "legitimate" government. It reminds me of all the medieval kingsoms IRL claiming to be the true heirs of the Roman Empire.

There could very well be a larger faction of the NCR out there that just hasn't reestablished their control over the Shady Sands region yet. And why bother, really, when it's just a frickin crater and some junky villages like Filly nearby?

Really well. It has great reviews from actual viewers, and is generating massive levels of Fallout discussion online, which was the point from a business perspective. It isn't coincidence that there was a huge Fallout sale on Steam. They probably made a shitload of extra sales (they call it "lift" in advertising) because of the show. It's also already greenlit for season 2, and got a massive $25 million tax credit from California to move production there from New York. It's pretty successful by any metric.

Why would people play 76 when it hasn't won any awards and has been generally lambasted in every review since it first arrived, when there are several other games in the same sale that have all been labeled as some of the greatest games of all time? Fallout 4 came out almost 10 years ago. That's ten years worth of newly-adult gamers that probably didn't get to play it as kids and might buy the game. Same for every other older game. I myself didn't buy Fallout 1 and 2 until around the time New Vegas came out when I was in college.

The NCR being destroyed, I don't mind considering that it's a whole theme with the faction that it's repeating the mistakes of the society that led to nuclear war in the first place but I would like them to expand on Hank's backstory so that he nuked the NCR because he actually did try to live there for a while with his family but he grew to hate how corrupt and ineffective everything was there, which is what led to him nuking it (and his mindset that they need to clear all the existing factions to improve the wasteland)

So, instead of having inconsistencies, we now have FNV being completely pointless. Who won the battle of Hoover Dam? Who controls Vegas? Who cares, Vault Tec wiped it off the map and New Vegas is a uninhabitable wasteland.

And the show still has some moronation going on, explain how the Unity didn't found Vault 33 despite it being in LA and out in the open.

Legion fell apart after Caesar died. It’s that simple.

Because they either stalemated or lost. Caesar is most certainly dead regardless. Either they show eventually with Lanius and become a big bad of S3 or some shit or they stay forgotten by the show.

Likely an Independent/House victory that see the deaths of General Oliver, Caesar, and Legate Lanius. Ganghaps even Lonesome Road and the nuking of Arizona is canon

Who the frick cares about Fallout canon? Even the games themselves don't give a shit about internal logic or chronology. We're talking about a series where people live in houses that have been busted for hundreds of years without fixing them up at all.

Fallout 2 and New Vegas did

Not in the above two games. That's why people are and continue to be upset.

Technically? Sure, but they aren't released at the same time so that is not how most of the community see it. And some pokegays still argue about shit like "Gold vs Silver" anyway.
