I own all the originals on steam. Is the remaster worth playing over those?
If the price is right for you. Fundamentally, they're the same games. They all run in widescreen now, there's upscaled FMVs, they added subtitles to the cutscenes so you can actually understand the dialogue now, and added photo mode all while letting you press a button at any time to switch between classic graphics and remastered.
Modern controls are fricking terrible, don't use them.
if you ever feel like replaying them, yeah the updated graphics will make for a cool run. it's an ok remaster. just wait for a sale.
Remastered has got the expansion pack levels for each game included, so you don't have to mod them in like the Steam versions. The Steam versions are all very barebones ports. You need to mod in basic essentials like controller support. Remastered is the quick and easy method to play 1-3.

I didn't like the expansions for 1 and 2, only 3.
I have a soft spot for the expansions because I listened to a series of interviews with the devs. They were a very small team who worked exclusively on the expansions, they had a slightly different philosophy to level design and as they made more games they were given a lot more freedom and encouragement by Core. The expansions genuinely do get progressively better, and for what it's worth I do think they're slightly better level designers than the guys who worked on the base games. But yeah, Unfinished Business is a bit rough because they hadn't quite figured out how to create scenarios where the combat would be fun.
Unfinished Business is just trolling bullshit. The others are like you said, really nice vertical slices of the main games.

funny seeing your post right now because I just finished Furnace of the Gods and took a break to come here and say how cool it was. first genuinely good level in the expansions, loved the atmosphere and design. an actual tomb where you get to focus on exploring without having a battalion of goons on your ass. legit better than anything in TR2 base game.

For me the sound in TR 3 is low and muted, though the sound in 1 and 2 works fine.
There was an anon complaining about the same thing, he managed to "fix" it by reverting some settings on his audio driver to default. Looks like the game doesn't like some things there.
I'm that anon, and I never fixed it. Nothing from sampling rate to exclusive access to installing older audio drivers or even the Windows generics.

What about all the improvements that were in the EGS version, the better environments and all that? What about the hidden feature that let you play the old graphics in that prehistoric anti-aliasing mode?
They added 2 new Photo Mode poses and fixed up some textures. I think EGS was beta build with dummied out content, so don't expect everything that was in that.
They need to make the good bar sign more gold in Midas Palace. It's too grey and doesn't double as a hint anymore.

Yeah, overall I'd say the current remaster is a B+. It's a very good way to play the games, there are just the smallest tweaks and details that would shoot it over to an A. If anyone was waiting to play, it's solid now.

Learn the tank controls, you don't have access to Lara's somersaults and other jumping abilities in modern.
Just press Ready Weapon before jumping. It's clunky but it works.

You basically can't miss the cistern keys with their location. They were a bit small but not Invisible, there were some legit invisible items on modern graphics though and that is unforgivable

The PC ports are missing so many effects from the PS1. The gold effect when lara lands on the midas hand is fricking awful on the PC version but it looks fantastic on PS1.
This cistern key is pretty well hidden in the original. Some things never change.

They certainly make the combat centric sections in Unfinished Business decently fun. And you know what, even the platforming has become exciting again, since the level design isn't Sabatu tier at all.
Even if you're a veteran, I recommend trying it out.

I don't think it's raytracing, anon. Afaik PS1 Tomb Raider 1 just used baked lighting. Dynamic wasn't a thing until TR2 which is why they introduced flares. Remastered lava emits a glow now. It's also why remaster will add holes in ceilings where there weren't any before, otherwise the level would look too dark to be playable in the remaster lighting engine.

I got it right my first playthrough and had to reverse the water to get a silver key you have to be able to jump climb up to. On the plus side I can probably map it out from memory though.

TR4 has worse geometry nodes because it was made by lesser skilled developers. It's a well known downgrade.
