Tomb Raider IIII Remastered

The EGS version has been downgraded, because it was apparently a unfinished WIP version that may or may not have been uploaded by accident by a diversity hire temp. Depending on whomever you believe.

I know Gankerirgins bait way too much. I will have to see a comparison video or something instead. Should be easy to prove since Tomb Raider trilogy was a super popular series on the PS1.

To be fair, most levels in TR3 clock in at around an hour to an hour and a half. Which is good. The only problem levels are Luds Gate and Lost City of Tinnos which have an estimated time of TWO FRICKING HOURS. Mind you, it will take you much longer on a first-time playthrough.

so the tr3 haters are the one-and-done gamers who never bothered giving it a second chance, whilst the tr3 fans are the ones obsessed with the series and lara croft who replays each game monthly? seems like tr3 is the game with the deepest gameplay and best enviroment design, but with the flaw of being extremely confusing and stressful for first timers

      Anonymous

TR3 was specifically made for people that played 1 and 2, fans of the series. It was never intended to be an introductory game. Though I suspect feedback on its difficulty is what made them integrate the tutorial into the main game in 4.

I've beaten it three times in its 24 years. I dunno, it feels enough. I don't see deeper meaning in that, it's just a high maintenance game. you beat it and you're like "phew, never again".

Anyone played through the trilogy using the new controls? Got to Lost Valley in TR1 so far, was planning to go with tank controls but after trying the modern option it's just so much more enjoyable. But they're very clearly not as precise as the OG and I'm worried the later part of the games, especially TR2 will become impossible.

Should I revert back now and get used to tank controls while the level design is still forgiving or is modern safe?

      Anonymous

You should be good for most of the game. I can think of a few areas in Tibet and especially TR3 where it may be a problem. As for TR1, maybe Natla's Mines?

I'd argue that he has zero responsibility for the delay of the patch. artistically the game is done, all that's left is technical issues.

            Anonymous

            >artistically the game is done
Not really. They still need to handle art assets that are stretched, not completely revised (The shotgun on TR3 is still the same shotgun texture used from 1 and 2), fix lighting issues, fix graphical issues, etc.

Revising lighting and textures 100% involves the lead artist. They aren't as involved as during the pre-release stage, but they still have a say over quality assurance, direction, and asset creation if any is required.

They still turned a profit on every Nu-lara game, and she's still one of the most instantly recognizable characters in vidya. If they focused on making the next tomb raider games less cinematic they wouldn't need the insane budget.

        Anonymous

        >They still turned a profit on every Nu-lara game
sort of - it isn't enough to simply turn a profit these days, it has to be a HUGE profit for it to be considered a success
same thing with the film industry, making a $100 million profit is considered barely anything anymore
i'm glad that the vidya industry is shedding the excess fat and AA games are making a comeback slowly but surely
godzilla minus one and palworld are proof that you don't need massively inflated budgets to create a successful product - that applies across two different industries

      R to get guns.
E or Space for jumping depending on whether or not you played Morrowind/Oblivion, the other button is Action.

Yeah, no, it's still in the middle. A lot of the Cairo shit can suck. Though the way the levels work, you hit CotD once, leave, then come back to it. Once that section of the game is wrapped up, it starts getting a little better, though the visuals aren't as diverse.

One of my biggest complaints with the modern controls is how basic the analog control is. Tomb Raider 1 and 2 on the PS1 didn't really take advantage of the DS1 controller. But TRIII did, by binding walk and side step to the analog sticks. This is something that the modern controls should do. Or bind walk and sidestep to R3 (freelook) button. I hope this mess gets sorted out with the versions. They should have just pushed the EGS version into the Steam password protected beta program and EGS beta thing and just said 'oops'. Give it out to DF and other press as a preview of the newest patch. Honestly I first heard about the version differences from people on X who started pointing out the changes between the Steam and GOG vs the EGS. I bought the game on Steam for proton support mostly. I held off on playing TR2 before it was patched. I did enjoy the NG+ in TR1.

      Anonymous

When I first played TR1 in this collection. I was a bit thrown off by the gamepad controls using the Steam version. Because the original TR1 has individual buttons for left and right side stepping, and a separate walk button. Tomb Raider II on the PS1 just has a single step left and right button. To make room for the flare. This control scheme in the remastered collection isn't mapped right either. The controls across all three games feel like they all share the same TR4/5 control layout. It does make me think that Aspyr may have used the game engine source code from TR4/5 for this port. TR1 has the turn jump. There's a 3D model of the item you picked up on screen, like the later TR games.

I replayed through TR1 with just the dpad, and had no problem with it. The right analog stick does help a lot. Something that the original Tomb Raider did not have.

image related are the in-game controls for Chronicles on the PS1, and the default controls for TRI, TRII and TRIII in this collection all seem closest to this. It makes me think that Asypr are using the Chronicles engine as the base for all of these ports. It would fall in line with people who said that TRII and TRIII has features from Chronicles and TLR back ported. The HD engine would be the most advanced version of the classic TR engines when it comes to features. It seems like they could just port TR4 and TR5 to this engine with no issues.

I never actually played Chronicles on a PS1, or TLR. I have only ever played the PC ports, and the Dreamcast version of Chronicles. But that indicator button does look like they mean the select button with R1. In TR2 the flare was just its own key when it was introduced. But by TR5, it had to work in conjunction with the circle ring inventory button and be tied to the walk button. TRI and TRII the walk button was its' own button. in TRIII walk was merged with sidestep. In TR4-5 Walk/sidestep is also a modifier for the flare.

Aspyr does own the source codes to the Mac versions of TR1-5. They said this port was built from the Mac source codes. This engine seems more in-like with TR4-5.

Well guys I beat TR1. I have to beat Unfinished Business.

Really like the game, got that save achievement. However, do the next two games switch gameplay up enough or is it a lot of the same? Might take a break before moving on to TR2.

      Anonymous

TR2 is MUCH more combat-focused with about 280 human enemies in total across the same, there are far fewer tomb levels and much more industrial, urban and modern levels
the levels are a bit more linear with there being far fewer "hub" levels like in TR1 (sanctuary of the scion, st. francis folly, natla's mines, etc.)
it also introduces vehicles like snowmobiles and motorboats

TR3 is much less combat-focused and is much closer to TR1 in that regard
TR3 level variety is sort of like a mix between TR1 and TR2 IMO, because you have either ancient civilisation levels like TR1 or modern and urban levels like in TR2
it also contains many "hub" levels like in TR1 and many vehicles (kayaks, ATVs, etc.) like TR2 and there's usually multiple crisscrossing paths to get through a level so it's much more challenging to navigate than either TR1 or TR2

that's pretty much it, i think
other than 1 or 2 new moves added into each subsequent game, they play almost identically to the point that some people call them expansion packs

        >do the next two games switch gameplay up enough or is it a lot of the same
Mostly a lot of the same.

TR2 has more combat and specifically against human enemies rather than animals therefore gunfights, and a different structure, with more focus on underwater.
TR3 has more combat than 1 but less than 2. Larger and more open levels, more of a hub design with some backtracking, and you can choose the progression order of Lara's destination countries.

They introduce more gameplay elements like vehicles, flares, ladders, crawling, running, ropes, ceiling climbing... and increase the difficulty.

But the gameplay loop remains pretty much the same. It is a repetitive series and easy to get burned out on, so don't binge on the whole series at once just to say you completed it or you'll end up resenting it.

Thanks anons, I will probably take a break then.

TR3 may have a similar hub-like feel to TR1 but it's significantly more convoluted. TR1 felt like you went in multiple directions but everything still clicked in place in the end. TR3 feels like shit was placed in obscure areas just to troll you, then slapped a boulder trap or a silent crumbling floor in a dark room for funsies.

          Anonymous

          yeah, that's correct
TR1's level design was lean with no excess or wastage and travelling in every direction lead to some place that either helped you progress or gave you useful items
TR3's level design is more like a maze with multiple dead ends

Visually it's a mixed bag, some areas look much nicer, some lost their soul. For now most water looks like shit, but the patch will address it.

    Two questions:

How bad is the framepacing in classic mode?

And which game most closely follows the style of 1?

      Anonymous

      >How bad is the framepacing in classic mode?
Feels bad and saw a lot of people complaining about it but I can't tell if it's bad on a technical level or just my eyes getting used to high framerate then getting whisplash from 30 FPS switch.

      >And which game most closely follows the style of 1?
They're all different... like discussed earlier. TR2 has more focus on combat and less "tombs" but level design still feels tighter, TR3 has more classic tombs but more open level design, and also has urban/industrial levels.

Finished TR2 for the first time. 144 saves. My rating: China > Tibet > Venice > Oil Rig > Maria Doria (with a special frick you to The Deck). This game in particular is clearly the proto-Uncharted, but its cinematic ambitions are held back by how shit ranged combat is.
First half is a struggle with all the hit scanner spam, but once you get inside the catacombs it's like you're suddenly playing Tomb Raider again. Very strong finish, Xian + Floating islands is a hell of a 1-2 punch.
Whoever decided to end the game with Lara in her bare feet and a bath robe is a god damned genius, I salute you. The final level also demonstrates that the game would be way more fun if Lara just had an infinite ammo shotgun.

We know they've been working on a patch every since the game released. The steamdb repo gets updated like every day. They most uploaded a newer build of the game by mistake. It even includes debugging files which would never be included in the final build of any game/patch. I don't believe there's a conspiracy around, some guy just mistook the files and uploaded the wrong build.

How do I kill this fricking bat reeeee

I noticed these. This is my first time playing tomb raider but the game is obviously very tile based and as I suspected there are tile based triggers that you have to walk over to make the bats become hostile. Somewhere in the room there are some tiles you haven't walked on yet (most likely some outcrop edge from the wall with no item on it so there's no reason to go over there).

          Anonymous

I'm pretty sure I walked on every single tile and nothing, I'll have to redoit to be absolutely sure, I just hope it isn't bugged.

    Tomb Raider 3
Is actually a lesson about medi packs.
See, in the first area you have to fight monkeys to obtain the medi pack first.
This causes strife within the monkey community and there are moments if you are observant enough where the stone gods are portrayed as judging you for taking more medi packs than you need.
Later, when you're in the prison, the high security compound, the guards attacking and chasing you are wearing shirts that say 'MP', shorthand for - you guessed it, medical packs.

Was Tomb Raider written and directed by a monkey? Yes. Is it a valuable lesson? You decide.

How come the hand of midas didn't turn Lara to gold once she grabbed the recently transformed bars? We are shown in Aladdin and the Princd of Thieves that the golden touch spreads infinitely to anything remotely touching the hand of midas, so are we to assume it magically stops once the bar is fully coated instead of constantly spreading?
