I've almost finished TR1 but I'm oddly finding myself losing interest now.
I know this is just a remaster but it really does just feel as if I'm replaying the original games again and that kinda kills it abit for me because I never really replay stuff once I complete it unless it's a fighting or driving game.
The only exception I've ever had for that was FF7, FF8 and Mass Effect 2
I was expecting something new with it like a level editor or custom maps community created.
I like how the graphics are nicer but the lighting is fricked, the silence is just annoying sometimes and I'm going through stuff extremely quickly because I've done it before

Anniversary streamlines the levels too much. Greece and Egypt in particular are half as long as the original game. Game breaking bugs like grapple points needed to progress sometimes don't spawn. And where's the boss battles with first encounter with Larson, Pierre and Cowboy? Oh, not there.
The only reason you think the original had more content is because you spent more time aimlessly wandering around bumping into the same textures, you can't give a single example of an area that was cut while there's plenty of areas that were hugely expanded with new or fleshed out puzzles. And the boss battles were hugely improved, they actually require some method depending on the enemy instead of just running in circles while holding down the firing button.

I love the originals and I love legend-anniversary, but they're entirely different games bro. The originals are much more puzzle and precise controls focused. Legend trilogy was streamlined which is cool but there's not the same challenge to it.
I see this as a case of appreciating both for their strengths, but they're not the same games, you can't play anniversary in place of tomb raider 1 unless you only want the story which would be odd

Midas temple is missing the aqueduct. Half of the Cistern is missing. You don't fight Pierre. Khamoon is missing rooms and no Larson fight. Kid and the Black henchman are combined into a cinematic QTE, with no skatepark. Atlantis is also missing a lot of rooms. The tower climb is reduced to 2 or 3 segments. Beating Natla ends the game, there's no escape segment of the Pyramid.

I hope this impacts the general scope of future patches. There's a lot of areas that could still use some polish instead of the devs solely focusing on bug fixes.
You can tell there's a lot of heart behind this project, it's just limited by its low budget and rushed deadline.
That's on the biggest platform for gaming at a low entry price for an IP that had historically sold multiple millions, there's nothing to celebrate here, and if I were a fan I wouldn't have my hopes up for more.
Some of AAA surely, but I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about this game, shame at that, since I already purchased my copy in the hopes of something new, oh well.

Unless you are Embracer and know the a) Budget and b) Revenue, you can't call this game a success or flop.
They wouldn't have a business if their estimates weren't even remotely accurate, You don't have to be Embracer to know that modern games aren't super cheap and this isn't 1 game it's 3 games sold as 1 game, Steam sales definitely haven't paid for this games development, but recouping costs is only a small part of the equation and with the current state Embracer is in they will definitely be looking for significantly higher profits than this.
Wonder how Lara was able to even get to that ancient temple in China without the Government even knowing. The CCP is famously protective of ancient chinese artifacts and rarely lets westerners even examine them. Plus the Great Wall itself is the worlds largest tourist trap.

I can't speak for pc but the ps1 versions of 2 and 3 we're always pretty dark, especially 3. This might've been done to justify the use of flares but they really overdo it. On some levels I'd just constantly have one on hand nonstop just to see where the hell I'm going.

Is it just me or did they make enemies much more aggressive? Especially in the Midas temple, I don't remember enemies following me 3 or more rooms over. There was a point where there was a clusterfrick of them underneath the aqueduct, because I was mostly running passed them.

There's been another update since then, Legend also sold over 6M and Underworld 3.8M.
It's weird how Lara had a full arsenal in 3 but barely any weapons in TLR. The one had ammo "variety" to make up for it but I'm sure most of it like the poison bolts, flash granade or the wideshot ammo were useless.
The original game was supposed to have a lot more puzzles for each ammo type but the designers 180'd in the end because they felt they were overdoing it. TR4 was originally going to be way more adventure game-y with its inventory and ammo use.
You can tell by the fact that you only need the lasersight once or twice and one of those is the target romm in Coastal Ruins, which can be cleared with the explosive ammo.
It's a shame those games had to be rushed and had only one year of development.

It happened to me.
Tried jumping on the big golden statue in the monastery, slipped from his head and opened the menu to reload in a hurry, saved in the middle of my fall instead.
The only other save I have brings me back to the beginning of that horrible snowbike level.
Too late I already finished the level and I'm in the corridor full of awful traps in the monastery. That one with swinging spike balls and wheels going back and forth and burning stoves.
Turns out I wasted my time on the statue because I need a key or something on the platform you can reach only by climbing it. So I died for nothing.

Got to Egypt and begrudgingly stopped there. Did Unfinished Business instead (which weirdly started me on the meat chapter) and finished it. I hate leaving things unfinished but I'm just gonna move onto TR2.
I give up. I found three prayer wheels, a key to the strongroom ( that's impossible for me to find ) and I still need to find two other wheels in the monastery. All the climbing on ladders business in this level isn't helping with exploration with how slow Lara moves on them. I'll watch a walkthrough.
I only played the demo on PS1 and that alone completely killed my interest in asking my parents for a copy during Christmas because of the underwater part.
Always hated these. And as a kid it was even worse, panicking not even three seconds after going underwater because of the air management.
And the motherfricking bear made me shit myself too, so I kept jumping into the pond and I was stuck there, unable to go underwater because of my fear of being immerged, unable to get out because of the bear. That demo ruined tomb raider for me for two decades.

Remaster visuals really helped enjoy TR1more. Not really a problem in 2 or 3(Started with 2 when it came out), but 1 has always been rough for me visually
Overall I enjoyed the new look of 1 but I'm keeping the old graphics in 2. There's changes I don't appreciate and missing details certainly because of time constraints.
Like the fire at the beginning or during certain puzzles, the light is flickering originally but in the remaster it's flat and the flames are visually boring. The sprite is prettier.
Or the skybox in the snow levels and monastery not having mountains.
Or the dark places turning bright when they were originally designed to make you use the flares.

That's with tank controls. The camera behaves decently in open areas like this one, it's in tighter corridors that it starts acting up. But you can try using the right stick or tapping View to recenter it a bit.
Also there's no bounce, it's just the quick roll animation makes it look like there is.
I'm also planning to do damaged clothes texture mod. I love the damage models in Mortal Kombat 9. But that would require remodelling and I have no clue how that works in modern games. So I can only do damage textures.

I just figured out how to replace the HD textures with my own. I still don't know how to apply normal maps, and just got the file to work in DDS format. The HD remastered texture is the top left right and mine is the bottom left right. To be honest, I used AI up-scaling on the original texture and then did a paint over. It needs some colour correction. It didn't take me very long. I spent more time trying to get it to work in the game. The remaster seems pretty easy to mod. Most of the game files are the same ones from the original PC games. Like the level data, texture data, etc.

Anniversary streamlines the levels too much. Greece and Egypt in particular are half as long as the original game. Game breaking bugs like grapple points needed to progress sometimes don't spawn. And where's the boss battles with first encounter with Larson, Pierre and Cowboy? Oh, not there.
The only reason you think the original had more content is because you spent more time aimlessly wandering around bumping into the same textures, you can't give a single example of an area that was cut while there's plenty of areas that were hugely expanded with new or fleshed out puzzles. And the boss battles were hugely improved, they actually require some method depending on the enemy instead of just running in circles while holding down the firing button.

Midas temple is missing the aqueduct. Half of the Cistern is missing. You don't fight Pierre. Khamoon is missing rooms and no Larson fight. Kid and the Black henchman are combined into a cinematic QTE, with no skatepark. Atlantis is also missing a lot of rooms. The tower climb is reduced to 2 or 3 segments. Beating Natla ends the game, there's no escape segment of the Pyramid.

I can't speak for pc but the ps1 versions of 2 and 3 we're always pretty dark, especially 3. This might've been done to justify the use of flares but they really overdo it. On some levels I'd just constantly have one on hand nonstop just to see where the hell I'm going.

It's weird how Lara had a full arsenal in 3 but barely any weapons in TLR. The one had ammo "variety" to make up for it but I'm sure most of it like the poison bolts, flash granade or the wideshot ammo were useless.
The original game was supposed to have a lot more puzzles for each ammo type but the designers 180'd in the end because they felt they were overdoing it. TR4 was originally going to be way more adventure game-y with its inventory and ammo use.
You can tell by the fact that you only need the lasersight once or twice and one of those is the target romm in Coastal Ruins, which can be cleared with the explosive ammo.
It's a shame those games had to be rushed and had only one year of development.

Remaster visuals really helped enjoy TR1more. Not really a problem in 2 or 3(Started with 2 when it came out), but 1 has always been rough for me visually
Overall I enjoyed the new look of 1 but I'm keeping the old graphics in 2. There's changes I don't appreciate and missing details certainly because of time constraints.
Like the fire at the beginning or during certain puzzles, the light is flickering originally but in the remaster it's flat and the flames are visually boring. The sprite is prettier.
Or the skybox in the snow levels and monastery not having mountains.
Or the dark places turning bright when they were originally designed to make you use the flares.

not my clip, he's robably playing with modern controls. Haven't played the remaster yet. From let's plays it looks like you can move the camera in modern graphics with tank controls even outside of looking mode.
That's with tank controls. The camera behaves decently in open areas like this one, it's in tighter corridors that it starts acting up. But you can try using the right stick or tapping View to recenter it a bit.
Also there's no bounce, it's just the quick roll animation makes it look like there is.

I already pointed out that there is none above with the models weights, there's no weights for breasts thus no bones thus no jiggle is possible, they really do leave a lot to be desired with this remake.

I just figured out how to replace the HD textures with my own. I still don't know how to apply normal maps, and just got the file to work in DDS format. The HD remastered texture is the top left right and mine is the bottom left right. To be honest, I used AI up-scaling on the original texture and then did a paint over. It needs some colour correction. It didn't take me very long. I spent more time trying to get it to work in the game. The remaster seems pretty easy to mod. Most of the game files are the same ones from the original PC games. Like the level data, texture data, etc.

This game cleared 800,000 copies in its first year, at that time I think it had around 2000-3000 reviews. Its all time peak is 2600. It's well north of 1.5 million copies sold now, most likely.

Context matters here. The 2013 reboot was the first "next gen" Tomb Raider game and it had an insane amout of marketing and despite selling millions of copies, Square Enix still said the game underperformed due to the insane budget it had.
I'm not sure about Rise but shadow clearly underperfomed and put the Tomb Raider franchise on ice again.

On a seperate note, Last Revelation is confirmed. On the level before Diving Area is a panel showing off the dates the original titles came out, except there's a 4th one in 1999.
Gotta get to 40 fathoms. Diving area is probably the worst set of levels in the trilogy so you should be fine going forward.

Final levels of Tibet start to pick up, then Xian Temple is unparalleled kino. It's a slog to get there but it's worth it in the end.
