Lara is canonically an adrenaline junkie out to put herself in as much danger as possible because it gets her off. She's perfectly fine dodging traps and jumping over gaps 30 feet in the air by herself.
Also considering the monks can just walk through doors and traps it's very possible they're ghosts anyway.
I think if you leave them completely alone with the goons they'll still fight them, but the monks are all automatically aggro'd towards you from the beginning of the level
QTEs are bad but literal cutscenes that replace actual gameplay are worse. That TRex fight is now completely automated.

TR1 is great, but it's clear CD had no clue what the frick they were doing with their initial trilogy. I would qualify Legend as a bad game. Anniversary is average with bad mechanics, and Underworld as finally getting something decent. But too little, too late at that point. TR2-4 are much better representatives of the series.

Lara in TR4, 5 and AoD behaves differently to the Lara in 1-3. To some extent it seems like a byproduct of late 90s / early 2000s edginess but she's just a grumpy c**t in 4-6 whereas in 1-3 she was still edgy but it was far more playful.

The QTEs happen before and after the battle. To fight it you have to shoot it, manually of course, and additionally you can aim it into the environment by getting it to charge at you.

That's just not true. Tomb Raider 1 and 2 for example the baddie would have definitely gotten them and then bad stuff for the world. In fact in Tomb Raider 1 the frenchie is there before Lara can get there, and thus deprives Natla of a valuable and capable Tomb Raider by shooting him.

This shit is really neat. I love finding new moves. The new reboot needs to do this... make lara's movement more "trick" oriented. Go back to button press controlled jumps and grabs, you can go through it with regular controlled jumps, but if you git gud you can pull off fancy tricks when jumping and scaling

I still like 2 but 1 definitely has more interesting level design with each level. Whereas, TR2 feels like it has a lot of filler levels that kind of blend together.
1's checkpoint saves give it that firm but fair kind of vibe. its a balanced game as well, everything works. 2 has it beat on puzzles, art jumps, level design enemy variety and story though. its the better game really, just let down by bullshit snipers

The guy who called 40 Fathoms comfy is a dweeb. It's unforgiving as hell and there's nothing to even look at. Just an ongoing series of narrow death traps so far. Even the trip into the actual boat is a big middle finger from the devs.
The ship levels love to spawn shotgun and rifle guys right in your face while climbing out of water. I think Neal was having a bad day when he made those.
I'm playing TR4 and I'm not feeling it. I think I'm all tomb raidered out. I get why they tried to reinvent this franchise 2 times (3, I guess if you count AoD).
The first 4 games at least just feel like more levels for TR1, and Chronicles seems like more of the same, except apparently it's worse.
The problem is that they pretty much break every rule for Hitscan enemies. They have no tell animation. Theres almost never any cover to break line of sight.
In the early game that's fine, but after the Venice levels the game becomes extremely fond of putting them on unreachable platforms where they can still hit you, or sticking you in an enclosed space with a whole load of them.
There is only TR1, 2 and 3. Everything else can and should be disregarded.
Tomb Raider works best when it's a bunch of stand-alone pulp adventures and Lara should be a flat character and doesn't need a supporting cast apart from Winston.
TR1-3 Lara is the definitive Classic Lara.
TLR-AoD Lara was a pretender and should be forgotten.
LAU Lara tried but just couldn't cut it.

I did a whole all-items run, discovered the Atlantis glitch on TR1, tried to complete the game anyway in the hope that the final results screen would be accurate (it wasn't), then started a new game and accidentally saved over my all-items run
I moved onto TR2 with a save to return to Atlantis after a patch rolls out to fix that bug

The higher levels of the mafia are part of a cult which date back to an early 20th century guy who was obsessed with chinese mysticism shit and found out about the dagger that way. It's weird that the cult-y side of the story isn't explored very thoroughly, but it's an excuse to take you to some new locations and do globetrotting, and it does make sense.

currently doing a tr 2 speedrun and i'll have all the trophies for that game, currently at the wreck of maria doria at 1 hour and 35 minutes

You can savescum and get some medipacks for the TR2 one, so in that sense it's 'easier', but you'll spend a lot of time replaying some of the more fricked-up gunfights until luck is on your side.
unlimited saves means unlimited attempts to get through enemy encounters but shooting enemies hit extremely hard, get used to fishing for "backstabs" where you can shoot them but they cant shoot you
use the early levels to hoard as much ammo as you can, the monastery level slurps up uzi ammo like crazy and so do the yetis in the ice caves
i also highly recommend doing the opera house skip and the temple of xian skip, both do not require glitches, just difficult jumps
yes its a good start for medpacks, i just ran past the first one, the hallway where the gold statue is is safe, just take potshots at the trexes with your pistols, i killed one and ran last the second one back into the hallway with the ladder.

It's not expressly explained, but all the creatures in Atlantis were genetic experiments made by Natla so either it was a creature specifically designed to replicate Lara's abilities or it's a creature that simply mimics the first non-Atlantean being it sees.
I remember a long time ago my older brother and older cousin and I were all sleeping over at my grandma's and there was some old version of the playstation there with apparently Tomb Raider 3. We didn't have the means to save the game but my brother and cousin basically stayed up all night trying to get as far into the game as possible. it's so frustrating how the best levels in tr2, barkhang monastery, temple of xian and opera house are so damn easy to skip past with trick jumps and the seraph dupe glitch, while the stinky oil rig levels and floating islands always have to be played the entire way through

I really like what they did with the Egypt level in the remaster. Except for a few spots. The lighting looks cool, the higher poly spynx head gives it a 90's CG promo render look. If I were working on this remaster, I would try to make the game look like the promo renders from the late 90's era games, as much as possible. This stage comes close to that.

Probably on the older side. The lack of a ceiling and weaker post processing (they're using less aggressive tone-mapping here) suggests an even more unfinished build, I bet it's going to be missing objects and details in other levels too. Not sure why they shafted EGS like that.
In my opinion, Rise is the only decent one of that trilogy. 2013 is even more automated, with lots more cinematic sequences, and annoying characters and characterizations. Shadow was made by a different dev and failed to build off of the previous two and just felt off and like a collect-a-thon.
Personally I liked Shadow more, less combat and more exploration fixed their formula for me. Now they just need to add a good Lara and a decent story, it doesn't have to be serious either, could just be pulpy as long as it's fun.
Shadow's heavy push towards crafting was a turn off, and the additional stealth mechanics was practically useless. Something to bring about the end of the world, somehow. I liked the eternal youth source and the ancient undying army better. I didn't hate Shadow. It's better than 2013 by miles, but it felt like a step down in a lot of ways from Rise.

I bought the Steam version with the sole reason that I would know it could run on Linux Mint through Steamplay on the Linux Steam client. Oddly, I think it runs better on Proton than it does on native windows. I never once saw the weird 'water bug' or had any frame pacing issues.

It's 2 frames, and playing at 60 fps evens it out anyways because at 30 frames your render time is 33.3 ms which is halved to 16 ms at 60, so you get 1 frame back anyways. And 1 frame of lag means frick all in Tomb Raider, you could even work around it using a basic input buffer if you were so autistic as to say "no frames or bust"
I'm curious as to how they are handling inputs since I don't see why they couldn't just track key press and release events at any framerate and consume them at the original tickrate.
It's funny because the remastered graphics run at 60 FPS and with the so called input lag, yet if it comes down to purely game feel no one wants to play classic because it's poorly paced 30 FPS. The Android/iOS port runs at 60 FPS and it's the classic version, though some of the textures are upgraded in the first few levels. There's plenty of solutions to this problem, even running one frame ahead (there's enough computational power for this old game)

They also had a proper frame cap, and standards were different back then. Shit like Ocarina of Time ran at 15-20 FPS most of the time but that won't fly today. Plus CRTs were able to match their sync rate so you didn't get judder, even Mario 64 was 30. The actual number of 60 FPS games back then was quite rare, given the lack of power.

No, the 30 FPS isn't that big of an issue. The real issue is the fricking awful hard-locked gamma settings. Shits pitch black. Even the window in Area 51 where you're supposed to be able to see through into the alien operation room is like a black void.

Turns out, the version from Epic is different from the versions that are on Steam and GOG.
Which leads to three possible conclusions:
1. Epic got the patch early (most likely, given that Sweeney is a israelite)
2. Epic had the "better" version of the game from the start (which is weird, because nobody noticed that for 2 weeks)
3. Epic has the outdated version (which is weird, because nobody noticed that for 2 weeks).
We won't know until someone makes an in-depth comparison. I can do it, but I'm at work at the moment, so it will take me some time.
They have all released at the same time. But only NOW people are noticing that the Epic version is different.

The ground, melee ones are still the worst. Flying ones don't do shit until they get close and you can take them out quick with the Uzis. If a ranged one is firing at you, literally jumping side to side or even up and down avoids their shots. The ground ones close the gap fast, and are a nightmare when they throw more than one at you, if you can't hop onto a block fast enough.

Nah, the one thing I don't miss from these games is the shitty combat. TR3's formula works better in that regard, the game has more enemies but the count resets between zones, reduced HP and pacing evens it out a little more. Even the developers knew they'd fricked up which is why TR2 has the most combat fatigue out of all 6.

The QTEs happen before and after the battle. To fight it you have to shoot it, manually of course, and additionally you can aim it into the environment by getting it to charge at you.

This shit is really neat. I love finding new moves. The new reboot needs to do this... make lara's movement more "trick" oriented. Go back to button press controlled jumps and grabs, you can go through it with regular controlled jumps, but if you git gud you can pull off fancy tricks when jumping and scaling

TR2 has better atmosphere than TR1; the music is more evocative and having actual lighting adds a lot.
I still like 2 but 1 definitely has more interesting level design with each level. Whereas, TR2 feels like it has a lot of filler levels that kind of blend together.
1's checkpoint saves give it that firm but fair kind of vibe. its a balanced game as well, everything works. 2 has it beat on puzzles, art jumps, level design enemy variety and story though. its the better game really, just let down by bullshit snipers

I'm playing TR4 and I'm not feeling it. I think I'm all tomb raidered out. I get why they tried to reinvent this franchise 2 times (3, I guess if you count AoD).
The first 4 games at least just feel like more levels for TR1, and Chronicles seems like more of the same, except apparently it's worse.
They are, 1-5 are pretty much the same game.

tr2 gun guys are actuallty fun to fight once you try to go behind them as much as possible, at least 1v1

You can savescum and get some medipacks for the TR2 one, so in that sense it's 'easier', but you'll spend a lot of time replaying some of the more fricked-up gunfights until luck is on your side.

unlimited saves means unlimited attempts to get through enemy encounters but shooting enemies hit extremely hard, get used to fishing for "backstabs" where you can shoot them but they cant shoot you
use the early levels to hoard as much ammo as you can, the monastery level slurps up uzi ammo like crazy and so do the yetis in the ice caves
i also highly recommend doing the opera house skip and the temple of xian skip, both do not require glitches, just difficult jumps

yes its a good start for medpacks, i just ran past the first one, the hallway where the gold statue is is safe, just take potshots at the trexes with your pistols, i killed one and ran last the second one back into the hallway with the ladder.
Just run to the alcove where the grenade launcher is and you can cheese the t-rexes with pistols

My screenshot is being played on a low end i5 machine with Linux. Just playing it on proton is a win for me. It looks like the lighting is tweaked on the EGS version. It still looks like the same game/ engine.

I really like what they did with the Egypt level in the remaster. Except for a few spots. The lighting looks cool, the higher poly spynx head gives it a 90's CG promo render look. If I were working on this remaster, I would try to make the game look like the promo renders from the late 90's era games, as much as possible. This stage comes close to that.
If I were to rank the re-texturing from best to worst. I found that some of the best were in the Egypt stages. Some of the worst was in the Atlantean stages.

This looks like the same game engine. But the textures look updated. The lighting looks updated too. Did EGS pay for an exclusively better version? I'm not gonna lie that is impressive. No, I think what happened is EGS has lax certification so they were able to put out a build earlier than on other platforms. We'll know for sure when the patch hits Steam, just check this location again. Aspyr's forbidden them talking about it because of the negative PR it would generate.

Probably on the older side. The lack of a ceiling and weaker post processing (they're using less aggressive tone-mapping here) suggests an even more unfinished build, I bet it's going to be missing objects and details in other levels too. Not sure why they shafted EGS like that.

In my opinion, Rise is the only decent one of that trilogy. 2013 is even more automated, with lots more cinematic sequences, and annoying characters and characterizations. Shadow was made by a different dev and failed to build off of the previous two and just felt off and like a collect-a-thon.
Personally I liked Shadow more, less combat and more exploration fixed their formula for me. Now they just need to add a good Lara and a decent story, it doesn't have to be serious either, could just be pulpy as long as it's fun.
Shadow's heavy push towards crafting was a turn off, and the additional stealth mechanics was practically useless. Also, the level design I didn't feel was as interesting and could be confusing at times. And the story aspects felt very start and stop, to me. Having a long term hub felt like it prevented the momentum of things from building every time they'd go back to the hidden city. And I don't even remember what the artifact was. I remember box? Something to bring about the end of the world, somehow. I liked the eternal youth source and the ancient undying army better. I didn't hate Shadow. It's better than 2013 by miles, but it felt like a step down in a lot of ways from Rise.

the games' maps is actually based off of grids so she will always jump off the particualr grid at the exact same place every time

I bought the Steam version with the sole reason that I would know it could run on Linux Mint through Steamplay on the Linux Steam client. Oddly, I think it runs better on Proton than it does on native windows. I never once saw the weird 'water bug' or had any frame pacing issues.

It's been confirmed to be TR12 thanks to data mining. CD's been prototyping it alongside working on other stuff for a while now, we already have confirmation of rope arrows as well as a gym. Some of the stuff they did in Avengers for Black Widow was prototyping for TR12.

I don't get this thing about input lag
It's 2 frames, and playing at 60 fps evens it out anyways because at 30 frames your render time is 33.3 ms which is halved to 16 ms at 60, so you get 1 frame back anyways. And 1 frame of lag means frick all in Tomb Raider, you could even work around it using a basic input buffer if you were so autistic as to say "no frames or bust"
I'm curious as to how they are handling inputs since I don't see why they couldn't just track key press and release events at any framerate and consume them at the original tickrate.
It's funny because the remastered graphics run at 60 FPS and with the so called input lag, yet if it comes down to purely game feel no one wants to play classic because it's poorly paced 30 FPS. The Android/iOS port runs at 60 FPS and it's the classic version, though some of the textures are upgraded in the first few levels. There's plenty of solutions to this problem, even running one frame ahead (there's enough computational power for this old game)

I mean people played the game at 30fps for over 20 years. I haven't played the remasters yet but the OGs were always capped.
They also had a proper frame cap, and standards were different back then. Shit like Ocarina of Time ran at 15-20 FPS most of the time but that won't fly today. Plus CRTs were able to match their sync rate so you didn't get judder, even Mario 64 was 30. The actual number of 60 FPS games back then was quite rare, given the lack of power.
No, the 30 FPS isn't that big of an issue. The real issue is the fricking awful hard-locked gamma settings. Shits pitch black. Even the window in Area 51 where you're supposed to be able to see through into the alien operation room is like a black void.

Turns out, the version from Epic is different from the versions that are on Steam and GOG.
Which leads to three possible conclusions:
1. Epic got the patch early (most likely, given that Sweeney is a israelite)
2. Epic had the "better" version of the game from the start (which is weird, because nobody noticed that for 2 weeks)
3. Epic has the outdated version (which is weird, because nobody noticed that for 2 weeks).
We won't know until someone makes an in-depth comparison. I can do it, but I'm at work at the moment, so it will take me some time.

People complain about the human enemies in TR2 but they were made to address the problem of the awful enemies in TR1

Atlantis enemies are exclusively mummies, but on steroids, with ranged attacks and some of them can fly. And there are HORDES of them. Fighting 3 of them at once quickly becomes a standard.
The ground, melee ones are still the worst. Flying ones don't do shit until they get close and you can take them out quick with the Uzis. If a ranged one is firing at you, literally jumping side to side or even up and down avoids their shots. The ground ones close the gap fast, and are a nightmare when they throw more than one at you, if you can't hop onto a block fast enough.
That's why the Atlantis loves to spawn flying Atlanteans when you are on a tight ledge, so they can push you off it.
No, it's more due to the quantity of them which makes it exhaustive, keep in mind the combat still sucks ass so more ass combat just hurts your game.

although honestly I think atlantis feels like it has more combat just because it takes so long to kill everything
Nah, the one thing I don't miss from these games is the shitty combat. TR3's formula works better in that regard, the game has more enemies but the count resets between zones, reduced HP and pacing evens it out a little more. Even the developers knew they'd fricked up which is why TR2 has the most combat fatigue out of all 6.

earlier TR1 levels don't have many enemies but it becomes awful once you get to Greece and it spams gorillas and lions and just continues to get worse

No, EGS probably has a much laxer/next to none QA process in place. Or maybe they let the patch through quicker because CD are their partners. The only thing stopping console owners and Steam players from the patch are the platforms themselves, not Aspyr, not the developers of this remaster nor ChudStal.
