I tried modern controls a bit in Lara's mansion and it feels like there's some things you can't do. How do you do a backstep so you can get a run up? Can you even do it on modern controls?

Agreed, the only thing publishers want to accomplish by including these kind of warnings in their re-releases of classic "problematic" media is to prime their customers to expect less.
Face it, these warnings aren't legal ass-coverings, as there's nothing illegal about the content in these games or almost any other prominent enough to include a warning like this, they're there to tell the customer: "this kind of media could only be made in an era you will never see again, so be grateful we're allowing it to see the light of day again." it's emotional blackmail and demoralization in its most subtle form and it only continues to be maintained because people rationalize it away as being better than the alternative of the game being censored.

I'm disappointed that the game seems to lock your fps to 30 when playing with original graphics. Is there any way to unlock it? It's just weird considering you can get unlocked FPS on the original PC version but not in this remaster.

Not true, the originals are locked to 30 or the physics break. Even this remaster is still running at 30 on the game sim, only the renderer is interpolated.

literally half the ps1 games that exist use tank controls thanks to tomb raider and resident evil, they were perfectly fine and actually if you play something like devil may cry 1 you'll see why direct movement is not always good, because when the camera changes suddenly you're holding the wrong direction and you turn around when you didn't mean to and it's annoying

Modern controls are fricking moronic. Learn tank controls, because I have a feeling some platforming sections will be impossible with modern controls.
I beg you to take the twenty minutes or so to become accustomed to the tank controls. They're very intuitive once you learn them and the feeling of stiffness is appropriate for the level design.
The whole game runs on a grid system. Walk to the edge of a grid square, do a hop backwards (which goes a full square) and then do a running jump at the end of the square. Your jumps go the same distance every time, because TR is more about precision and fulling understanding your moveset than on-the-fly fluidity.
It's 3D Prince of Persia in the same way the PS1 Crash games were 3D Donkey Kong Country.

I literally never beat my last playthrough of tomb raider 3 because I saved after missing a jump at the end of area 51, and my last save was somewhere in the jungle.

I like the idea of modern controls but the moment I realized the acrobatics were gimped and I couldn't flip around in each direction easily I switched back to tank. I'd say if you are new then just bite the bullet and learn the tank controls, they're not that hard to get used to

Brighter? Everything I've seen in the comparisons had the remaster as the better lit of the two, while the OG has the black fog wall and generally limited lighting. Unless he was just referring to the contrasts, since the remaster did add the grey cancer to the mix.
yes. it's in a completely closed off area yet is lit up brightly. just like the first level. all they did was give it real lighting and open up holes to let natural light in which looks really good
The original TR1 is way brighter, at least in some spots, as it has flat lighting. The remaster has more sophisticated lighting however that creates light-dark contrast that wasn't in the original which tends towards being generally darker. The sprites that are used to represent 3d objects are also incredibly bright, making them very easy to see even in the darkest room. The remaster obviously has lit 3d models which are a lot darker, depending where they are. I can see why they added in the pick up notification for new players having played for a bit.
While you're right, the original on PSX has a more horrific atmosphere. It's probably because of the darkness in the distance as well as being more cold and less warm like the remaster is, but I like the neutral/cold leaning colors of the original way more, the new one feels like it's been through too many color grading filters. There's something to be said for how easy the original is to parse almost instantly.
It does seem pretty cool that you can switch out the graphics on the fly. But I'm not buying it until they release a remastered level editor as well, so we can make our own levels and cutscenes!

Did any of the devs say what era of 3d games they were trying to target with the new models? A lot of it feels like idTech 3 polygon levels, but with slightly higher resolution textures than you'd see of that time.
Aspyr hired actual TR community autists to work on this remaster and you can tell by the little things:
+ Mid-air rolling from TR2 added to TR1
+ Responsive jumping from TR2 added to TR1, so as long as you're already running, you jump immediately on the frame you press
+ Ported PSX exclusive features like the level restart function, midas gold reflections, TR3 rain, and TR3 reverb. TR3 reverb back ported to TR1 and TR2.
+ Crouch rolling added to TR3
+ You can sprint now without having to wait for full stamina in TR3
I'm impressed, I hope the devs get a chance to patch in stuff like OpenLara water before Embracer cuts them off.

No. I just finished installing and can confirm that it absolutely does not run on Windows 7. Not sure if they would change this is you complained on steam since the system requirements there say it should work.
Is it only this game or does it happen in other games? In any case, turn off WASAPI exclusive mode for whichever sound device you're using. In the Sound Control Panel, under the Playback tab, click Properties for whichever device you're using for audio, then in the advanced tab uncheck both of these.

No, it wasn't. There was no "normal". 3d games where brand new and nobody knew how to control them. Every game was an experiment. We put up with it because nobody knew any different.
I was 12 years old when the game originally came out. Everybody fricking hated the controls.
I'd agree with one caveat, since there was no normal, you also didn't have enough reference to realize how bad they were and much you should hate them, but yeah, the grid-based controls and missing jumps were kind of a pain even back then.

Resident evil, ff7, mgs, or any other tank controlled game with fix backgrounds and camera angles where, and still are, fine. Tank controls where never good in fully 3d environments and we knew it back then too.

Those are completely different types of games though, and there hadn't been enough games with the amount of freedom of movement as Tomb Raider to realize how much the controls didn't translate.
We put up with it because Tank Controls were very explicitly balanced around the entire design ethos of Tomb Raider you turbo-homosexual. People didn't complain about them and it sold millions because people back then weren't shitters, unlike you.

1996 was a big year for Duke Nukem and Lara Croft. Duke 3D Released early in 1996, Tomb Raider came out in late 1996. Both the original DN3D and Tomb Raider were really big DOS-PC games too.
1996 was this weird year of just non-stop 'innovations'. Quake 1, Mario 64, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Wave Race 64, and to a lesser extent, Crah Bandicoot, Duke Nukem 3D (not really as innovative as Quake), NiGHTS into Dreams, Shadows of the Empire, Diablo. 1996 was like 3D gaming becoming the new mainstream thing in gaming. Tomb Raider may as well be the original 3rd person 3D action platformer.

For those wondering about the Steam Deck. DF did a test on SteamDeck performance and it doesn't have the weird framerate stutter issue found on Windows. The Remaster Trilogy runs at 90fps at maximum resolution.

i havent seen the controls menu for TR3 yet (for flares).
I doubt quickload and quicksaves buttons are available in the options menus are they? didnt see that in the TR1 options

Confirmed. You cant save without using gog galaxy to play it.
For God knows what reason the current version has GOG Galaxy files and a Steam API in its root directory. Delete the three files and you are good to go. The game launches instantly after doing this, too.
I will say they completely butchered the water, hopefully they can just patch something in because it's a far cry from the white waters you see in lost valley.

The game was designed with tank controls in mind, so they are obviously not the superior choice. There are also issues with the camera when modern controls are turned on which aren't present in the tank controls setting probably due to some source code limitations or poor coding or something. I don't think they break the game like they did with the RE1 remake, but they are not ideal that's for sure.
As I expected you can't just brute force a completely different control scheme into a game that is so tightly designed around and interwoven with the original, intended control scheme.
They're ok for clueless zoomers that will give up after the first level and never learn the intricacies of the platforming, so I guess in that sense their goal is accomplished.

I've found a decent enough stream with one "newbie" chick that's actually determined enough to learn the game properly and punch through it. She's having fun, but the chat is backseating her like a motherfricker.
It's baffling how unhelpful and inconsistent the modern controls are, especially when the camera is stuck close to Lara and it can't decide which direction to move her. I was dicking around with it in the mansion after running through 5 stages in TR1 w/ the original controls, and switched back to tank after 5min.
There is also an issue of simple platforming becoming stupidly tedious with modern controls. Jumping across that bridge in Lost Valley was piss easy before - walk to the edge, hop back, take a running jump with a grab. Easy.
With modern controls, it becomes this fiddly bullshit, because you can't simply HOP BACKWARDS.
I was fully expecting the modern controls to basically simplify/babysit the player in a sane way.
Eg. Being able to run up to an edge (only run off a ledge if you're holding a movement-modifier button), and needing less space to do running jumps so you can just spin a circle on the spot near the ledge and then jump, vs. the deliberate routine OG controls demand of walk up to ledge, hop back, run forward and hold jump.
Actually am a little disappointing there's no grip toggle in this so I don't have to hold CTRL all day when climbing or ledge shimmying.

I can see the seamline in the original texture too, at the same spot. The original gets away with it because of the low resolution/ lower colour texture. It's mostly noticeable on the bottom rock.
The original at least made an attempt to have the rocks look connected between them, compared to the remaster where it looks like a wall of rocks in flattened perspective, with none of them trying to match between the tiles.
The real issue is that the tutorial just teaches you tank control movesets, not the modern control ones and at point it deliberately tells you things that do not apply to that control scheme.
I've been playing Tomb Raider for 20+ years, and I have no fricking clue how to do basic shit with modern controls.

literally half the ps1 games that exist use tank controls thanks to tomb raider and resident evil, they were perfectly fine and actually if you play something like devil may cry 1 you'll see why direct movement is not always good, because when the camera changes suddenly you're holding the wrong direction and you turn around when you didn't mean to and it's annoying

I beg you to take the twenty minutes or so to become accustomed to the tank controls. They're very intuitive once you learn them and the feeling of stiffness is appropriate for the level design.
The whole game runs on a grid system. Walk to the edge of a grid square, do a hop backwards (which goes a full square) and then do a running jump at the end of the square. Your jumps go the same distance every time, because TR is more about precision and fulling understanding your moveset than on-the-fly fluidity.
It's 3D Prince of Persia in the same way the PS1 Crash games were 3D Donkey Kong Country.

I like the idea of modern controls but the moment I realized the acrobatics were gimped and I couldn't flip around in each direction easily I switched back to tank. I'd say if you are new then just bite the bullet and learn the tank controls, they're not that hard to get used to
I'm mainly curious if the modern controls adds a lock-on button for targets to allow strafe jumps and the like, or how the side-jumps are handled in the first place.
I tried to flip around with the guns out like how it works in legend and anniversary but it didn't seem to work that way either

Brighter? Everything I've seen in the comparisons had the remaster as the better lit of the two, while the OG has the black fog wall and generally limited lighting. Unless he was just referring to the contrasts, since the remaster did add the grey cancer to the mix.

yes. it's in a completely closed off area yet is lit up brightly. just like the first level. all they did was give it real lighting and open up holes to let natural light in which looks really good
The original TR1 is way brighter, at least in some spots, as it has flat lighting. The remaster has more sophisticated lighting however that creates light-dark contrast that wasn't in the original which tends towards being generally darker. The sprites that are used to represent 3d objects are also incredibly bright, making them very easy to see even in the darkest room. The remaster obviously has lit 3d models which are a lot darker, depending where they are. I can see why they added in the pick up notification for new players having played for a bit.

While you're right, the original on PSX has a more horrific atmosphere. It's probably because of the darkness in the distance as well as being more cold and less warm like the remaster is, but I like the neutral/cold leaning colors of the original way more, the new one feels like it's been through too many color grading filters. There's something to be said for how easy the original is to parse almost instantly.
It does seem pretty cool that you can switch out the graphics on the fly. But I'm not buying it until they release a remastered level editor as well, so we can make our own levels and cutscenes!

+ Ported PSX exclusive features like the level restart function, midas gold reflections, TR3 rain, and TR3 reverb. TR3 reverb back ported to TR1 and TR2.

+ You can sprint now without having to wait for full stamina in TR3

In the Sound Control Panel, under the Playback tab, click Properties for whichever device you're using for audio, then in the advanced tab uncheck both of these.

Those are completely different types of games though, and there hadn't been enough games with the amount of freedom of movement as Tomb Raider to realize how much the controls didn't translate.
We put up with it because Tank Controls were very explicitly balanced around the entire design ethos of Tomb Raider you turbo-homosexual. People didn't complain about them and it sold millions because people back then weren't shitters, unlike you.

What DOES suck is the modern controls , and the camera is a mess on many occasions if you play that.
Id recommend sticking to the older tank controls, until the devs fix that mess. But yes these remasters are the best version to play , all HD and 60fps

This isn't the first game to frick this up. Try deleting any Galaxy dll files in the install directory.
Alternatively, try deleting the Steam API dll files.
For God knows what reason the current version has GOG Galaxy files and a Steam API in its root directory. Delete the three files and you are good to go. The game launches instantly after doing this, too.

The game was designed with tank controls in mind, so they are obviously not the superior choice. There are also issues with the camera when modern controls are turned on which aren't present in the tank controls setting probably due to some source code limitations or poor coding or something. I don't think they break the game like they did with the RE1 remake, but they are not ideal that's for sure.
As I expected you can't just brute force a completely different control scheme into a game that is so tightly designed around and interwoven with the original, intended control scheme.

How do you even get filtered by the first level? It's literally a walking simulator with bats
They are usually stuck on the first climbing section at the very start of the level, because they don't know how to climb.
And most zoomers somehow can't figure out that Lara's Home = tutorial. And then rage that the game has no in-game tutorial. Or chekpoint saves.

Tomb Raider is legit harder than most souls games.
I can't find one worth watching. They all put on modern controls and then do nothing but b***h about the controls and the game not telling them what to do or where to go. Gamers to day are so stupid. They literally don't even experiment with buttons or button combinations. If the game doesn't tell them what to press they press nothing.....
I've found a decent enough stream with one "newbie" chick that's actually determined enough to learn the game properly and punch through it. She's having fun, but the chat is backseating her like a motherfricker.
It's baffling how unhelpful and inconsistent the modern controls are, especially when the camera is stuck close to Lara and it can't decide which direction to move her. I was dicking around with it in the mansion after running through 5 stages in TR1 w/ the original controls, and switched back to tank after 5min.
There is also an issue of simple platforming becoming stupidly tedious with modern controls. Jumping across that bridge in Lost Valley was piss easy before - walk to the edge, hop back, take a running jump with a grab. Easy.
With modern controls, it becomes this fiddly bullshit, because you can't simply HOP BACKWARDS.
I was fully expecting the modern controls to basically simplify/babysit the player in a sane way.
Eg. Being able to run up to an edge (only run off a ledge if you're holding a movement-modifier button), and needing less space to do running jumps so you can just spin a circle on the spot near the ledge and then jump, vs. the deliberate routine OG controls demand of walk up to ledge, hop back, run forward and hold jump.
Actually am a little disappointing there's no grip toggle in this so I don't have to hold CTRL all day when climbing or ledge shimmying.

Guess they're using AI image generation on some of the textures beyond simple 'upscaling'.
And another thing that jumped out at me. Some textures just are properly seamless with one another, although the majority I've seen thus far at least mostly try to be consistent with how good/bad it tiles relative to the original graphics.

You say obvious work, but then you can see the 'pattern' surrounding the frame of the wall being all kinds of fricked up and smudged.

I can see the seamline in the original texture too, at the same spot. The original gets away with it because of the low resolution/ lower colour texture. It's mostly noticeable on the bottom rock.
The original at least made an attempt to have the rocks look connected between them, compared to the remaster where it looks like a wall of rocks in flattened perspective, with none of them trying to match between the tiles.
The real issue is that the tutorial just teaches you tank control movesets, not the modern control ones and at point it deliberately tells you things that do not apply to that control scheme.
I've been playing Tomb Raider for 20+ years, and I have no fricking clue how to do basic shit with modern controls.
Modern controls:
>Not even thought out properly, waste of extra buttons (keeping shoot and interact separate, for instance)

In their attempt to pander to zoomers, they probably alienated them all instead.
They're fricking awful, all they had to do was put modern movement on the stick, and keep tank on d-pad. Like what Capcom did the REmake/0 HD.
Kek it was that simple, the irony is one of the modders they had working on this actually has a pretty decent implementation of modern controls in his version. I do wonder which moron is responsible for these, probably cost them a fair few sales heh.

That would fix 90% of the issues already. So much core gameplay revolves around back hopping or backflipping/sideflipping
is it worth using a controller for this game? i use tank controls and a keyboard for now
The tank controls work poorly on a thumbstick, so either stay with the KB, or switch to d-pad.

I switched from using controller to kbm, just feels better for tank controls.
