might order parts for a kernel debugger for my DVT clone (console one, not a tower)
and been fricking around with the Xash3D engine, which some guy used to port half-life to the ogx
also nabbed a modded cable for vga, pity the only monitor with sync-on-green in the house is iffy (dodgy integrated cable, frick you dell)

I forget what it was called but there was a dashboard that actually used the stock UI with new menu options for loading games and stuff
I have an OG Xbox console from 2003 with an upgraded 80GB IDE HDD from around that time too and everything still works perfectly; even the disc drive, not that I ever use it. I removed the clock capacitor too. I recently played Knights of the Old Republic from the HDD and it was flawless, didn't notice a single glitch or error in the 50 hours or so it took me to finish that game. I played Silent Hill 3 a couple years ago on my Fat PS2 from the added internal hard-drive and it was constantly crashing and freezing, etc.
You can reinstall the original dashboard after softmodding. You can also replace the disk drives.

I only have an unmodded JP Xbox with 2 games, Phantom Dust & Shin Megami Tensei NINE. I usually play NINE every couple of years and have done since 2006.
I used to have Blinx 1 & 2 but gifted them to a friend, wouldn't mind playing them again. Sold Ex-Chaser/Black Stone a few years back.
PD port was fine, so it's now a mono machine reserved for a singular game.
I should look into Xbox emulation but I understand it's in a black hole, if ever NINE is playable I don't think I'll have a reason to ever use the chonky lad again unless I need to raise something up by a few inches
What's the best picture you can get out of these without any kind of hard mod? I use a capture card to play mine on my PC at the moment but it looks kind of crappy.
Component cables on an HDTV capable of 480p. Either official cables or Monster cables. Have fun shelling out the money for either of them.

Component can get you up to 1080i in some games. There's a list somewhere.

It has some decent exclusives but it really is not the best place to play multiplats and I don't understand why this has been perpetuated for all of these years. Sure, theres a good handful of them that are better on Xbox but many are far worse than they are on PS2 and sometimes even Gamecube. Most of the time you'll find FMVs are more compressed, noticeably worse texture quality, broken or missing effects, and sometimes even worse framerates.
Just off the top of my head basically everything from Konami and Rockstar is garbage on Xbox as are dozens of other third party games. Sega and Ubisoft seemed to care a bit more and their ports were usually the actually good ones. Personally Id avoid playing anything on there that isnt from them or an exclusive.

Great console, had many find memories playing Halo with friends, Splinter Cell 1-3 and stuff like KotoR.
I missed mine maybe 2 years ago and wasn't to explore more of the library.
When I'm able to set it up again (middle of moving) i really would love to play Double Agent on it. I only ever played the 360 version.

A friend and I tried to play some Godzilla DAM and Save the Earth last week only to find out my XBOX suddenly stopped working. DAM doesn't load at all after the studio logos, and Save the Earth plays a little bit but randomly the console resets itself. Was such a shame and shock because it worked perfectly fine as recently as a month ago.
Anyone know what component might be the cause?
That sort of behavior sounds like some of the other capacitors inside are failing, it's happening to a few console
Thanks, I'll look into it more. The fact it fluctuates issue between which game we tried playing was so weird. It's a shame. Kind of ironic that I still own all my consoles and the only ones I have that ever started to fail like this are the 360 and now this.
Yeah the fluctuation is what tipped me off. While the thermal pads microsoft used at the time weren't the best they don't really fail so the console will get too hot and overheat so I doubt it's an overheating issue, but things like the console killing its own power with a reset? Loading taking insanely long and not going through? That sounds like something isn't getting enough juice.

Don't sugarcoat it. It's inevitable for all consoles. That's why it's universally recommended to open all Xbox consoles and remove the clock capacitor unless it's a 1.6, in which case it needs replaced and not just removed.
It fluctuates because the board is trying to work but it's covered in literal acid corroding it to death. Open it and remove any cylinders with bulging caps, then clean the board spotless with isopropyl.
I would be playing Blinx right now if it wasn't for the fact my console suddently refused to turn on at all. I tried everything, even replacing these capacitors didn't do shit so I'm to assume there's no hope.
I have another console, but it has a small hard drive that stores two games at best and I have not bothered learning to install a new one since it's a 1.6 softmodded console and I've heard it's kind of a pain in the ass.

Get your Xbox HDD key and use XboxHDM to make a new HDD from scratch. Then on the Xbox itself use XBpartitioner 1.3 to set it to use the correct cluster size since XboxHDM always sets it to 16KB and you're probably going to need it to be 32KB. The only thing Xbox consoles look for is that it's locked with the correct key and has the dashboard files, even on the last models released.

Considering unmodded, uncleaned, completely stock filthy Xbox consoles sell upwards of 60-80 I'd say it's a no-brainer unless someone did a shitty install job on the modchip. 1.6 sucks, though. If the clock cap ever dies you have to replace it, can't just pop it out.

Recent acquisitions, I have a big soft spot for the OG Xbox mostly for its Sega games but I usually would prefer all multiplat releases on the console.
My Xbox disc drive shat itself two years or so ago and I just recently swapped it out so I've been picking up stuff again. I used to have a copy of Halo 2, albeit incomplete, but I sold it once the MCC came out.
Got this particular copy dirt cheap to try out the Insignia servers and it was cool playing it online again.
Will probably look into picking up the Otogi games but I didn't expect prices to have gone up for that game since it was so cheap for years, I used to play the original a lot when I was younger and it was my first encounter with Fromsoft.

I didn't know what to expect other than I would see a few people sing its praises online.
A decent enough console shooter through and through, lots of interesting ideas and solid game design.
I don't wanna sing its praises since I'm only about two or so hours into it, but it's pretty cool from the character designs and atmosphere.
Playing on hard makes the combat pretty engaging since you need to know how to properly kite enemies and making the most of weapons.
It does the two weapon limit which is a little lame, but when you can have some insane explosive weapons on hand constantly, it's insanely satisfying blowing up groups of enemies and seeing them ragdoll.
If you see it for a decent price it's well worth buying, also compatible with Insignia if you wanna play online, although I haven't played a proper match in game, nor do I know if the actual multiplayer component is fun, but I imagine it'll be like every other console FPS game at the time and be enjoyable enough, but the main attraction is the campaign.

That is so weird to see. Also for the Noctua upgrade you need to find a fan bracket with rubber grommets on the mounting points, all of these custom fan upgrades fool you into thinking the fans alone are enough to keep noise levels down.
Xbox was weird, growing up, nobody owned an xbox. Everyone thought it was weird and gay, everybody owned a PS2, and the nintendo kids still owned nintendos. Then the next generation came around and everybody owned an xbox 360. Shit was everywhere, lotta games on it. Next generation, never knew one person who owned an xbox one.
Anyway, never owned an xbox console myself. There's maybe 10 games in total I want to play spread across the xbox og and 360. Sadly, the 360 ain't backwards compatible with the xbox og games I wanna play. Want to avoid buying two consoles for ten or so games.. such is life.
