Too many choices

I have about 50k roms and I just don't know what to play anymore. Any tips on how I can sort through the shovelware?

It's weird like that, that's part of the reason people buy actual hardware
    I don't understand why though

Frick idk, just start playing randomly. Works for me. I've been finding tons of fun games in mame and fba. I started a thread a few days ago about arcade games to just play. It's odd how many are fun enough to sink like 30-45 min into or find a new favorite. Im practicing in extreme downhill and just started fricking with aerofighters 2. Both are fun as frick.

I go with this. Just boot up something random and play it for 5 minutes. If it seems cool, keep playing. If not move on. You can find all kinds of cool shit that way.

I've done this with famiclones before, and I second this. (Even if most of them have NROM shit.)

You could search youtube or reddit for a top 10 or 20 list for whatever system you are interested in. Play whatever games show up in multiple posts/videos and by the time you finish you should have some idea of what the system offers. At that point look for the "hidden gems"

If it is arcade type stuff you really can't go wrong by just rolling the dice and picking one at random.

Don't think too much about it. Just boot something up and play.

I dust up my old retromags and/or go to the retromag site and just start reading. When I find a game that looks interesting I just load that one up.
It's a way of fulfilling a childhood dream where I fantasized a ton of money and being able to just buy whatever game I saw on a magazine.
Most of the time the games are actually very mediocre and you realize how much fake hype magazines were engaged with back then, but still, fulfilling the dream is nice.

If you gotta force yourself to try new stuff, give a few minutes to every game on a platform that starts with the first letter of your name.

Doesn't OP's cart have both KIrby games right on the label?

Idk, as a recovering drug addict, videogames help keep me from using and being a nuisance to society. Plus they are a great leisure activity that still keeps your mind stimulated. Tons of worse things to be done than vidya, just don't play them all day everyday.

I'm a speedrunner (by hobby), so I gotta play vidya to excess.

I too consider myself a ROM antiquarian

If you don't know what to play but you have all the roms, then the answer is to play all the roms. Just start from the start and go from there

I solved this by keeping only a small number of roms loaded up on whatever I'm playing, but keeping the entire library saved on hard drive. Every so often if you're bored, go through the hard drive and think about what you'd like to add. Only keep 5-10 games on there at a time. Totally solves the problem, without removing any real options. I usually play the same 5-10 games seriously even when I have more options anyhow. This just streamlines it.

Find out what's most appealing for you. I only play 2D platformers nowadays, the other genres are too long and I don't have time to invest on them anymore. Thankfully, this narrows down a lot of romsets for me, so I just grab the one that looks prettiest at the moment. I occasionally try to beat them if they have been promising enough.

There's kind of an easy solution to this and it will actually help you become more knowledgeable about retro gaming in general. Which systems have you NOT played yet? Find them, and then try to play at least a few games on each one.

This is how I learned about great games like SEGA CD's Terminator, Ginga Fukei Densetsu: Sapphire, Starblade on 3DO, Virtua Racing Deluxe, etc. The truth is that there are great games on every system, even ones you wouldn't think to try like Neo Geo Pocket Color or WonderSwan. If you can play a few games on each system, you'll know all there is to know about retro gaming in no time.

      I almost forgot:

      https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/games/systems

This will help you find anything you're missing as well as find games in any genre on any console. Just select any console and go by category. It's how I found a lot of what I played on various more obscure systems

I recently got a custom gbc and a everdrive. Spent an entire day going through every gb & gbc release (around 1500 games), romhacks, homebrew, and translations. I just picked ones I liked. Actually really fun.

If you organize by # of units sold, you can instantly wade through probably 49.95 thousand of those 50 thousand ROMS you have.

Thank God I don't have this affliction, it sounds miserable. Delete your collection of what might as well be 50k .txt files of pooping mario asci, and try downloading one (1) (uno) singular game that you actually want to play

i randomly roll one of the top 1000 games on glitchwave and play that until i beat it, then repeat: https://glitchwave.com/charts/
it's been a good time so far. you could do that but for a custom chart with a retro date range e.g.: https://glitchwave.com/charts/top/game/1971-1998.08/

I'd recommend sorting by genre. If you're the action-oriented type, then you'd want to play fighters, shmups, platformers, and run n guns.

Take everything off your flashcart/emubox/whatever or hide your fullsets in some directory. Then browse games websites or old magazines or ebay listings for games that look interesting and copy them into a root directory with nothing else in it. Check out stuff that seems interesting, don't just play stuff because other people put it on top ten lists.
Whatever you do, don't go through fullsets when you're sitting down looking for something to play. It's like scrolling through Netflix. Terrible experience.

Did this 25 years ago. SFC/SNES got to B-Daman enjoyed it, didn't enjoy it enough to finish. But the road was long and rough wouldn't suggest anyone do this, just to find a hidden nickel.

Choose a game you want to play and seperate it from the rest of the ROMs into a "Now Playing" folder. Prevents distractions and saves you the hassle of digging through your ROMs to get to what you want.
