Not even worth it tbh. Skavenslaves are so expendable and cheap that friendly fire doesn't matter. In fact I actually consider it a useful to trick as Skaven to bog an important enemy unit in a horde of skavenslaves and then open up with ratling guns or whatever else. Skaven infantry is utterly expendable, even their """elite""" infantry.

While this mostly applied in TW2, in TW3 Infantry kinda feel like it has more place to shine instead of just being meat shield, granted you have the adequate Lord/Faction.
Melee Demons do pretty good in general as long as you're not facing tons of magic-projectiles ranged units, and the fact that you can't just have virtually infinite Winds of Magic make Mage still important but not as pivotal to your army as they used to.
True but I'd still say ranged is superior to melee in WH3, just to a lesser degree than it was in WH2.
Melee infantry will always be inferior to hammer and anvil or missile spam, even juiced up melee infantry will take lots of damage vs inferior melee infantry, even more if they're being shot at and the AI is pretty good at making your elite infantry miserable.
Meanwhile archers/fusiliers in checkboard formation cost almost nothing and work just aswell.
I wish they made friendly fire more of an issue to fix that but then you'll the people crying they can't no longer use their fusiliers to shot over their own infantry.
I wish the Skaven would be more willing to do friendly fire. Those skavenslaves are free for a reason.

heres the secret, aim for a unit directly BEHIND the one you actually want to kill, your chariots will sprint at full speed over the first unit, then send move orders away and repeat

Consider army composition and what you're up against wherever you are in your campaign. For example, if you're against dwarves, who are primarily a high-armor, ranged focused faction, you'd want to focus on fast units that can outmaneuver their ranged attacks via speed or stealth, and have armor piercing so they can beat them in melee.

I run 4 of the higher tier cav (Chaos Knights, Horned Ones) and put a pair on each flank.
Most units will just crumble when getting hit with a double charge, then you moved on down the line.
Alternatively, you can just have them lap around and hit their archers or siege engines from behind.
Cavalry shines as an anti AI irritant counter. Their job is to tie up the cavalry/war hounds that would normally pull some slinky bullshit and slip through the 1cm gap in the infantry defending your flanks, doing practically nothing while still being incredibly annoying.
Though granted, a hero is better if you want to fire into the blob that forms around them.
Ambush Stance is REALLY overpowered. How it works is that if your army passes the ambush check (rolling your ambush chance versus detection chance) the AI will treat your army as if it's not there. So if there's an enemy army turtling inside a settlement that would be a pain in the ass, then get your main army in ambush stance using either a nearby settlement or a lone secondary lord as bait (it has to be within an one turn move or the AI might not go for it) and you can easily separate and kill them. This is also the best way to deal with the AI when it's force marching around your territory being an annoying pain in the ass. Again, use ambush stance + bait to catch them (or, if they're not in range, to get close undetected). As an additional benefit this lets the bait lord quickly build up free levels due to always being involved in combat, so when he gets to 15 or so you can 'graduate' him into leading a full army and pick up a new level 1 lord for ambush bait. I always head straight for ambush chance in the blue line for every lord if my faction allows it, it makes the game play so much smoother.
However if you're fighting Beastmen, Skaven or Tzeentch only ever use lords you don't care about losing as bait, because they can (and will) ambush attack and kill them. That'll still leave them stuck in your main army's reach to be finished off the following turn, but you'll have to rehire a new lord every time.

Detection has no % to trigger (unlike ambush success chance) - if you're too close to an enemy city/agent/army, you'll just get detected, doesn't matter how big is your ambush success chance.

You don't necessarily get detected by agents, there's a chance you get detected by agents, which is seprate than the success chance of the ambush
And the funniest shit is that even friendly agents can expose an ambush.
Unembedded heroes and settlements can detect you, which have their own separate detection roll. There are also ambush detection skills that can be gained through levelling, traits or equipment that the enemy lord might have. Additionally, the detection roll happens twice - once at the start of their turn to see if they detect you, and again when they actually trigger the ambush to determine whether it'll be an ambush battle or a regular battle.

The main campaign in TW3 was absolutely horrible. I didn't like the Vortex campaign in TW2 but once you know how to play around the campaign mechanics, it was bearable. There are basically no ways of playing around the mechanics in TW3, and even though they mellowed out most of the BS thing, it's still not really pleasant to play.
Making Immortal Empires available to everyone was a pretty good move, but you could argue that's too little, too late.

What are some of the most fun strategies? I love doing armies with a mix of units even if it's not the most effective.

The last total war I played was Rome 2, it's been like 10 years. I just bought Warhammer 3 and I'm trying to play the Karl Franz. It's going pretty good, I've got the elector lands unified finally. But sometimes I'm still losing what should be easy fights. I'm having to outnumber my opponents 2x before I'm able to win some fights, and that's with good units.
How do i build empire armies? Right now I'm going 5 heavy infantry, 2 ranged, 5 heavy cav, 2 ranged cav, 2 steam tanks and 2 artillery, a general and an agent or wizard. Basically I'm doing old fashioned tank with infantry and let ranged go to work and cav flank from behind. The problem is unlike previous total wars, where if you had good enough troop quality and morale and positioning, your infantry can hold people off, but in Warhammer 3 my infantry gets melted by spells, flying shit, and special powers that I'm not even aware of. And it always seems my opponents have some OP artillery guns that out range and out gun mine. My infantry often gets routed in seconds.
Is my build bad or is this a skill issue or what? I'm playing normal difficulty on both battle and map.
And 2nd problem is I'm involved in over 15 simultaneous wars right now. Every faction that has even slightly negative disposition and are on my borders have declared on me. I haven't declared a single war this game: all I did was defend myself and eat up electors using the fame system. Is this working as intended or is this a bug? Everytime I stackwipe an enemy, 2 more pop up in its place. I can't move my armies anywhere because some random army from a random faction 2/3 across from the map has sent an exploratory mission pasting 50 turns to attack my one unoccupied province on the front. This AI is bullshit right??
Always put a warrior priest in your armies for more replenishment. Maybe lessen some cav for more missile troops. Basic troops are actually quite good at holding (spearmen shields, halberdiers). Cheaper too. Always have at least 1 to 2 artillery to dictate the flow of battle. Wizards are also useful.
Some things to consider re; army comp: first, halberdiers are straight up better than greatswords. I know it doesn't make sense that a lower tier unit would be better, but they're cheaper and are better at defence (they'll mulch cavalry and have charge defence). Your infantry isn't meant to be killy like Khorne daemons or High Elf Swordmasters, they're there to hold the line and protect your damage dealers. Two ranged units is too few, handgunners are the most cost effective unit on the Empire roster (though they're a bit more work than crossbowmen). I usually have between six and eight. Empire has within the top three best artillery in the game, get Hellstorms and don't bother with cannons - focused fire from multiple handgunners will kill any SEM in seconds, so they're not needed.
About the wars; generally the way it works is that the AI always wants to be in at least one war, and if they're not at war with anyone else they'll probably declare on you because of the anti-player bias. By swallowing up elector counts you've drastically increased your territory and therefore the number of factions you're in contact with, and so dragged yourself into a lot of wars. The best way to fix it is to build maxed walls in every settlement (even your most central ones, because the AI WILL dive for them) and focus on reducing the amount of enemies you're at war with. Pick the nearest faction and fully obliterate them, even if you have to cede territory in the rear. You can always get that back, but once you're rid of an enemy you're rid of them forever, so you've made progress.
Also Franz is one of the hardest campaigns in the game, so you kinda fucked up there (I assume you fell for CA's stupid 'recommended first campaign' icon), but it sounds like you're managing alright and managed to get to tier 5, so good job.

if you're going this standard it's 4 heavy inf/6 archers and 2 heavy cav. once you get a feel though start adding some style to each army.

I play civilization (also some aoe2 sometimes) and I was playing the free weekend of this game, completed the prologue + the campaign as cathay because it said it was the nation recommended for beginners.

play on higher battle difficulties, means you're favoured less in autoresolve so you're forced to play the game more and enjoy it
i find that if i end up autoresolving too much in a campaign the game just gets boring
It's weird to say this but I want a mod that scales combat so that smaller garrison fights stay on normal mode but lord stuff is hard. I always feel like I start auto resolving with my main lord and never get to use all the cool late game troops as a result. But I don't want to have to play every small battle in exchange for turning up the difficulty nor do I care to play a battle with my main lord of it will be an easy win.
Just play Age of Wonders 3 or Planetfall instead.

AoW3's great because you can build outposts/cities anywhere, but sucks because every unit can just scoot over mountain and sea like it's nothing.

You can quicksave before battles, so don't be afraid to try them out, you can always load back and auto-resolve it if doesn't turn out the way you'd expect.
It's important to get a good feel of how unit work, how fast they move. Some units are really micro-intensive, other can just be left as is. I would say to try to not diversify too much your army composition at first, just go for infantry with shields backed by missile units, and then try to sprinkle a few Hispanicy units here and there and see if they perform as well as you'd imagine.

Warhammer 3? Either chink is fine, they're probably the easiest, least complex start in the game.
I'm actually playing it for the first time since WH1 right now. I think I prefer the vanilla balance but it's nice for a change, I feel like I'm learning the game all over again. I just got absolutely mulched by a couple Doomfire Warlocks which I wasn't expecting at all, their lethal poison is no joke.
Tyrion (Eataine, High Elves) or Zhao Ming (Western Provinces, Cathay). Both races are balanced generalists who have access to basically all classes of units so you can properly experiment with army comps, as opposed to specialised factions like Lizardmen who lack ranged options or decent cavalry for example. As for why those particular characters; Tyrion starts off owning one of the richest settlements in the game and his island is easy to defend and has few enemies. Meanwhile, Cathay is currently very underdeveloped until various DLCs populate it, so you mostly only have to deal with pushover minor Cathay factions and Ogres, so Zhao Ming's one of the easiest starts in the game.
I like it for the most part. Disliked the battle changes at first but I've started to get used to it. It's fun having more effects available for units. The balance isn't perfect though. I like using factionwide and army caps (depending on the faction) and while some lower tier units are way better and useful for longer, some high tiers feel castrated. For instance, I find Slaanesh's Heartseekers are monsters in vanilla but trash in sfo especially compared to regular seekers. Campaign SFO is mostly good. Like most updated faction mechanics/buildings/landmarks
I'm playing it for the first time at the moment because my beloved CTT is currently MIA and probably will be for literal years at this rate and it seems pretty fun so far. Played Skaven and Lizardmen and I wouldn't say any of the new additions felt particularly bloat-y.

warriors of chaos are wildly unbalanced. play archaon and steamroll the game. mono daemon factions kind of suck, the champions of chaos characters do a much better job than the actual factions they represent.
ku'gath and nurgle are hard, very difficult starts make both a struggle to start with, wouldn't reccomend
bel'akor is basically as easy or hard as you want to make him, his portal mechanics let him decide who/where he wants to fight, you could go to norsca, bretonnia/marienburg, or even cross the ocean to ulthuan/naggarond
skarbrand isn't as unga as you'd think, since to succeed with him you basically need to manually fight all battles to minimize losses, so that you keep momentum and make the best of his bloodletting mechanic
most of the WoC are pretty easy, if you want a fun time i recommend vilitch if you have CoC
All four mono daemon factions have difficult starts but become extremely powerful when their lord starts getting levelled (even Skarbrand, who's strong from turn one, has a rough start because settlements in the Badlands are so far apart from each other and he thrives from tumbling into multiple settlements a turn, so until you can expand north into the Empire/mountains you'll be running on low gear). Be'lakor and Archaon are easy (Archaon's start position is basically invincible) and Daemons of Chaos (aka Daniel) is just not fun right now, so don't bother with him at all.

Well if you're talking about LL they're OP. If you want to see generic lords that are truly OP, look for Bretonnia. With vow unlocked and frequently winning battles, you will have discount Louen at your disposal.

You can beat fully kitted Karl Franz with generic Bretonnia lords or hybrid wizard like Vampire generic lords.

A Wurzag army is literally ONLY counterable by the A.I. stacking high tier single entities, since they’re the only thing immune to his foot of gork spam, and even then that’s only if you’ve not got big uns aroind, since his savage orc buffs mean they can laugh off anything outside of magic attacks while pounding them into the dirt.
Gelt’s not as personally powerful, but he doesn’t even have the single entity spam weakness due to his artillery buffs, and anything that can get locked into a blob is utterly fucked as he endlessly spams low cost blob destroyers on a tiny cool-down.
Not him but that list is obviously ranking lords solely by melee capability, that's why Ku'gath is S tier despite having such shit campaign mechanics and Kairos is C tier despite being probably the single most destructive lord in the game when levelled. You should be able to tell that at a glance.
Aren't Strigois the worst choice? It's been a while but I don't remember a good reason for picking them up back then. Vampire Lords just have better mounts and magic, Necromancers buff your shitty units by a ton.

I'm on a 1060 so I run the game medium with only unit sizes and unit textures at their max since that's mostly what I like looking good.
The look of the game for the campaign map definitely isn't as good as previous entries. Though the unit quality has gotten way better. It's actually hilarious if you put up the WH3 units next to WH1 units and compare their textures and details.

Your units are super durable thanks to regeneration abilities and expendable since you can always just raise more chaff the moment the battle ends, you have no range* apart from magic, and poses many heavy hitter monsters/units/lords, this means you have to make use of hammer and anvil tactics to their upmost degree keep them still with your skeletons and hit them with your aforementioned magic/monster/cavalry/lord

she buffs peasants to be comparable (roughly) with better infantry, most of her enemies are weak to the fire attacks she gives the army, she is a monster ta killing undead and you can always rely on questing knights. so you do basically the same as with vampires except your peasants aren't ass disposable and instead of monsters you plow the enemies with the hoves of errantry. you also get access to one of my favourite artillery pieces, the blessed trebuchet.

Not sure if you have an NVIDIA or AMD GPU, but NVIDIA's Image Scaling is quite nice for rendering games at a lower res but outputting at a higher one. Gives a nice sharp image without looking like a bilinear filtered mess.

What's the problem with ambush AI in Warhammer 2? I can't think off the top of my head any actual egregious broken things that get in the way of fun.
AI just shuts down in ambushes (as the defender). Some units charge you, some do nothing, some blob up, some run in circles.
is it a bug or a feature? would be pretty shit if your ambush was met with an iron wall. no sense even ambushing at that point.
It's a bug that CA introduced with some of the last patches (or perhaps the last, not sure) and then dropped the support of WH2 in favor of making WH3 so WH2 players are stuck with it.
I suppose I haven't played since around the last DLC's release but I don't remember them being able to form ranks very quickly during ambushes anyway. I like to sandwich nigs tho so maybe that had something to do with it too.
Ambushes have always been great against the AI but previously it at least put up a fight. Now it just roll over. I'm not sure now but I dunno if this bug is also in WH3. It'd be funny if it wasn't.
