I think they're out of ideas to keep the plot advancing and filling until the time comes when they have to kickstart whatever some sort of Apocalypse they have planned (you're gonna see that in Reverie too: they asspull real weird stuff) and thus they have to make shit up.

I've only played Kuro 1 but it has some of the worst writing in any JRPG I've ever played. The pacing is also terrible, the combat is a simplified version of CS. The music is worst.
Only thing that's slightly better is the graphics but the animations are still terrible.

I really hope I like Reverie more than Cold Steel 4, CS4 did nothing for me, got probably 30 hours in before I realized I just didn't care about the plot at all. It's funny, the two Crossbell games only made me like Cold Steel less, CS's writing is just so much worse, and the story is far too spread out, it could have been two games.

Kiseki is unironically more about the journey than the destination. At least for me. The main plot isn't that important to me most of the time. It's about going to all these cities and towns and seeing the people living there and how they interact with each other. How they are affected by what's going on in the plot. Also sure the character writing isn't Shakespeare but it's pleasant how the characters bounce off each other at times. That's the word I'd use overall honestly. Kiseki games (for the most part) are: pleasant.

I don't get how people can say Zero/Ao are better than the Sky trilogy when the characters are all downgrades and the setting is less interesting and the pacing is pretty much just as bad.
I wouldn't say the setting is less interesting, politically I think there's a lot more going on in Crossbell than in Liberl.
Agreed on the characters and the pacing but it's not that big of a downgrade, I still enjoyed them almost as much as Sky. Azure was better than FC or 3rd.
I don't really like Sky that much but the Crossbell arc has such boring characters. It's easily my least favourite of hte 2 arcs. Everything's just so dry and boring. At least Cold Steel was fun with all the chuuni nonsense it throws in.

I doubt CS4 will hit me that hard because I'm expecting nothing but the worst from it, so odds are I'll get a positive experience out of it because of that. Right?
I'm in the same boat and just now starting CS4 anon. Didn't drop CS2 for months but I did take a month long break after it cause the ending sucked so much ass.
As bad as the pacing was my biggest issue was just how unsatisfying the ending stuff was, they didn't explain anything about the plot and it just sort of ends with nothing of value having happened, making the slog through it feel like a waste of time. CS3 had the same issue to a lesser degree (at least the ride to the end wasn't nearly as bad since it's a better game all around). I'm expecting CS4 will at least answer some of the questions even if the answers suck.
I've finished every game in the series and CS4 is somewhere in the middle for me. I think it works best when you understand what it does that Reverie doesn't do.
CS4 is a very long game but it is your last chance to do Rean sidequests and do a substantial amount of NPC dialogue. The deus ex machina is terrible and I hated the ending besides the credit sequence. Reverie is still ridiculous but I find it a bit better plot wise. Also while the idea of all the cameos is cool, it's a drag in CS4 you only get to use most of them in one dungeon. Reverie fixes this by giving you complete freedom but there are a couple characters you can only use in CS4.
CS4 is the last time you can freely explore Erebonia though and you should keep that in mind.
Also, read 3 and 9. You don't have to collect all the books but read it after you finish the game.
I've been collecting every book in every game and read them as I find them so no issue there (except for Sky FC where I missed a couple, some of the ones in that game require a ridiculous amount of backtracking).
That's good. Reverie also has a new book, but they also let you collect all the old books and read them which I found fun.
Kuro 1 and 2 doesn't have any but hopefully they come back in 3. I get that they were thinking films would replace them but I still think the games should have at least one collectible book.

Elliot is just so pathetic compared to Rean that it's impossible to see him as anywhere near equal, which is kind of a prerequisite for a "bro" relationship.
