It was never going to match FEAR due to their modeling and animation so they did the smart thing and just use the general tone and aesthetic.

    part 1:

I played the first level. There's something.... Off about it.

Like imagine making a game with slow-mo, a stealth suit and a really nice shooting system. It's functionally some of the best gunplay I've played in awhile...

But everything else feels really so amateur. The melee ability is a fricking shove as opposed to the amazing bicycle kick from FEAR, you can't always take hostages despite being right in front of you (maybe there's a stamina system or something). The visual design is so fricking stale. You'd think they'd not copy FEAR on its worst parts which was the fact that every level looked the same. At least Extraction Point and some FEAR levels did look a little different from time to time and there is some visual variety in Trepang2 but not a lot from what I've played and seen online.

Enemies swear like sailors and rather than being funny or tasteful like in FEAR, it just comes off as a 12 year old writing a script. It's really weird this thing has a story. FEAR's story was actually neat cuz it tied to the paranormal aspect which kept you playing through those repetitive missions where it was really fun but you'd fight the same enemies in the same environments using the same guns. So having that mystery element was really cool.

      Part 2

I don't even know why they bothered with giving everyone communicating with you or with each other a "avatar profile" on screen during any kind of dialogue sequence. Everyone is either a logo or in a mask. And they just throw names around like "black ops" "star protocol" without any context. "look at us, we're so cool by not telling you our story but we still show you all this meaningless shit that is going on, cool huh?".

Fear 1 also had much better level design and AI. I killed every enemy on the first level on hard without taking a single bullet which I guess is kinda okay since it is the "tutorial" level but then at the end I'm fighting guys with armor that take like 8 shotgun blasts to the chest before dying and you can't tell the difference between them and the rest in this game because this level is so fricking dark and everything looks the same. This looks like the most generic Unreal Engine game I've ever seen and that affects the environments too.

it's hard to fricking see shit from range and bullets are flying everywhere and your slow mo doesn't recharge over time so you HAVE TO GET KILLS TO RECHARGE IT. I need to take out enemies from a distance sometimes and I can't see what the frick I'm shooting at sometimes. Let me zoom in or ADS, Fear 1 let you do that.

FEAR 2 was kinda shit in some factors but it improved the enemy variety, weapon variety and pacing of the first. It's funny that while that game is blasted everywhere, no one took the actual good ideas it improved upon the first. This game is a boomer shooter without the neat gimmicks or momentum even though it has some fun maneuvers and it doesn't take enough from F.E.A.R. to be a compelling new-school shooter.

The shooting is solid but so far my impressions are pretty bad. The shooting is the only good thing about this game. Everything else ranges from a D to a C+ This feels like a game ESLs or tankies would fricking nut over cuz it's "realistic".

        Part 3

I should mention that this is with review code and I neglected to mention there's a massive difficulty spike at the end of the first level. I died 7 times on the "boss fight" but up until that point I took zero damage until I got to that room.

Yeah the AI sucked in the demo, I was hoping that'd get improved going towards release but I guess not. Shame.

i think watching the devs vs watching people play it explains the bad first impressions. ultimately they are trying to build a game mechanically different from most homogenized shooters on teh market with inspiration from the aesthetic of FEAR and SCP, and most people were expecting a braindead shooting gallery with lots of visual spectacle like FEAR. it's pretty much another Selaco situation.

          >it's pretty much another Selaco situation.
Huh? Everyone likes Selaco, it's top notch in gameplay and presentation, the only problem is the devs went and pushed troony shit in it.

            >Everyone likes Selaco, it's top notch in gameplay and presentation
i recall there being a really mixed reception here since it didnt play like other mythologized boomer shooters and generally the game is really punishing on max difficulty and hardcore. you are given explicit tools to dodge or gain a small speed boost (shift key and slide kick) despite your slow base movement speed but you cant spam them. despite there being explicit visual and audio cues before an enemy attacks to slide into cover, fricking this up will generally result in you being dead or having half of your health missing. it's a pretty simple thing but they pushing the skill needed to perform it consistently so high on max difficulty that people were having meltdowns about it here.

I think this is the same case for Trepang. you are really demanded to use your move set to the fullest and manage your special meters well. i think most people just want a feel gud shooting gallery like FEAR, which is fine, but they dont want to put any effort in utilizing character movesets to get the gud feeling. that and having a slow base speed, but moves to gain fast speed in a consistent manner, really draws ire out of people.

i'll have to play trepang 2 in the fullest to really draw a conclusion. but i think it might be a misunderstood sleeper hit.

Selaco had anything but a mixed reception. It's generally praised for pushing things forward in an oversaturated shooter market

Ganker disliked it because they projected troony bullshit

it might be time to start shitting on fear, this is way too much fart huffing for a 6/10 game

F.E.A.R. is a solid shooter it's just got some bugs from its age (one in particular is really bad if you play over like 200 fps) and it gets very repetitive very quick but that's mostly because I already beat it which felt like playing the game 2 or 3 times over to begin with. It's just too damn long without enough variety. Which is again why I still enjoy the 2nd game for what it brought in. If only FEAR 3 continued that line of thinking to make the ultimate combination of both without being a shitty MW2 knockoff with spookies. Monolith don't even make shooters anymore they just make LOTR stuff now which is depressing. They literally could've made one of the best modern FPS games.

            >one in particular is really bad if you play over like 200 fps
what bug is that? I played it on like 700 fps recently, I think... or is that just what I got in the benchmark and then I activated VSync? now I'm not sure.

              Anonymous

If you play over 200 FPS (can't remember the exact number, I cap it at 144) your character and some of the physics can jidder and stutter in slow mo. I'm not talking frame drops necessarily I'm talking about the movement feeling really weird. It's like you're literally getting stuck on shit as you walk by it and touch it for a fraction of a second like you're ruber-banding.

ah okay, in that case I must have used VSync.

IDK man give it a shot, again, these are my first impressions of what I played which is just an updated version of the demo (the start of the game). if they add ADS or Zoom i'd be much more forgiving as this is just a stupid fricking decision not to include it. If your guns have recoil and you're taking enemies out from a distance, you need fricking zoom.

It really bothers me because everyone on Steam counters with "ADS slows down the game" not realizing that fricking fear had zoom and this game has SLOW MOTION SUPER POWERS. Frick.
