The original game was absolutely stunning presentation-wise but was held together with duct tape and old gum and the combat system has some severe issues like basically boiling down to "hold down attack button and press the tech button once the bar is full".
The remake has a much better combat system and extra stuff to do but besides the character models it looks like a HD re-release of a PS2 era game and almost the entire game is piss-easy even on the highest non-unlockable difficulty.
It's a great game. People's biggest complaint was the voice acting, which was pretty meh. You can change the voices to Weeb or just set the volume to 0, at least.
It's a faithful transition from 2D play to 3D play in every sense of the word and practice. If you like Mana games, liked the old game in 2D, you'll likely like the 3D version of it. It plays Solidly, if a little easyish, but its by no means a drag. I played it start to finish, without having to force myself so that says something because i never finish games nowadays.
Excuse me, but my extensive research leads to the opposite conclusion. But there definitely is a criminally low amount of smut of Belladonna, especially in her cat form.
It's one of my favorite SNES games. Really great OST and visuals with fun characters and gameplay. The multiple narrative perspectives and branching classes also add to the replay value.
The remake is great and possibly one of the best examples of how to recapture the original aesthetic and feel of a game properly. Give either a try if you enjoy classic '90s JRPGs.
