                Wait
You took a photograph of what's on your computer monitor? Why? Why not take a screenshot?
Also, if you don't want to use integer scaling, use a shader like sharp-bilinear-simple. If your monitor is high res enough it looks almost as sharp as raw pixels except no inconsistent pixel sizes and no shimmering. Dunno if that's available in Bizhawk but it's in RetroArch

                because windows 10 "update"

It'll be getting a Switch physical release anyway.
The Switch version doesn't look like it'll be just a GBA game being emulated, since it has hi-res character portraits and dialogues.

Any of LRG's Carbon Engine releases on Switch are pretty easy to dump and extract, the .gbc rom for Xtreme Sports was just sitting right there.
5da3ad1c5354f29a74c571c2b598da96213afbe1 is already in the no-intro database.

I hate Limited Run so much. I'm still waiting on Trip World and Persona 3, people already have theirs in hand and mine hasn't even shipped yet.

Their shipping logistics is a nightmare, but they seem to have improved their processes because if you pre-order multiple things at once, it now lets you choose to have things shipped individually.
I'm still waiting on stuff I ordered up to a year ago, but they've managed to fulfil a lot of my orders at last.

              >repro
It's not a repro. That being said, as someone who grew up in the GBA era that's way more than what GBA games sold for brand new so frick that.

I'm going to buy it, but we all know that Wayforward games suck so I'm basically throwing $60 down the toilet hoping that this game will be fun.

Well, repro only in the sense of the hardware, that Nintendo didn't manufacture the carts or authorize their production. Aftermarket or unlicensed might be more appropriate.
Shantae Advanced never got a proper GBA release until now, the software isn't repro.

Even though the cartridge is a Game Boy Advance compatible, they avoid putting any mention of the system or its branding on the packaging; they only use evocative visuals since it IS unlicensed.

Same goes for their previous Game Boy / Color releases. The most they give is the initials of the system in the product title like GBC or GBA.
                https://limitedrungames.com/products/toki-tori-gbc
I have a copy of their Toki Tori release, If you look all over the box, you won't see a word about the Game Boy and instead it says stuff like "Exclusively Designed for Retro Handheld Game Systems!", and "Gameplay on your retro handheld".
The back of the box is a recreation of the original release. This by definition would be an unlicensed repro; even though it's authorised by the software and IP holder, just not licensed by the platform holder.

Same's gonna be true of that Trip World DX release, I'm still waiting on that shipment.
With LRG orders, I bundle items to reduce orders and save on shipping, but you suffer much longer waiting times because of logistics and any single item holding up your order.

Incidentally, I don't think I've seen any aftermarket GBA releases up until Good Boy Galaxy from First Press Games, and they still haven't shipped those. There were plenty of places doing GB and GBC cartridges, but I guess somewhere started making GBA carts?

                Anonymous

Yeah it seems the reason why my copy hasn't shipped out yet is because I also ordered the original game and they're bundling them together for shipping. Kind of annoying. Similarly, my copy of Persona 3 isn't here yet because it's shipping with Persona 4.

                Anonymous

It's not a repro, it's unlicensed. "Repro" is just a cute way to call a bootleg a bootleg. A licensed re-release like the iam8bit stuff is... A re-release. Crazy, I know.
This is not a "reproduction", considering it never existed in the first place in the West. It's simply unlicensed.

                Anonymous

In this case you're ignoring that they don't have Nintendo's permission or involvement in the manufacturing of the game cartridges.
It can be defined as a repro of Nintendo's hardware, but not of the software.
So, yeah unlicensed hardware, but licensed software.

Capcom did make new cartridges for titles like Mega Man X (SNES), Mega Man II (NES), and Street Fighter II (SNES) through iam8bit, and Mega Man The Wily Wars (Genesis) through Retro-Bit, but done without Nintendo or SEGA's involvement.
                >Produced by or under license from SEGA Enterprises Ltd
That screen on later revision SEGA Genesis and Mega Drive hardware was a check to prevent unlicensed cartridges from working. Later unlicensed cartridges were able to bypass that check though, and would sometimes include their own boot message saying to disregard the previous message.
I don't actually know if SEGA gave the okay for Retro-Bits and iam8bit's aftermarket Genesis cartridges though, they might've done? I recall they're generally cool about that sorta thing.
Nintendo on the other hand? Almost definitely not, I'm pretty sure they've been strict since the SNES days that only they manufacture their physical games. I recall NES and Famicom allowed other companies to manufacture games with their license.

Please, if anything of this is wrong, correct me, I'm keen to learn.

                >I recall NES and Famicom allowed other companies to manufacture games with their license.

On Famicom at first anyone could do what they wanted, but that changed after the NES, in two steps, first with FDS disks, and then with cartridges. Only exceptions were contracts that were done before the change so Namco was still able to make their own carts for instance, at least until 89-90 which is when the contract expired and from that point onward Namco would release very few Famicom games

I don't know what's the deal with Tengen in the US however. Their NES games were supposedly unlicensed but then there were ads for some of their games in Nintendo Power, so there might be more to it.

                Anonymous

That's literally what "unlicensed" means in this context. It's the same situation as Tengen on NES. The iam8bit cartridges are ALSO unlicensed, as they did not get a license from Nintendo to produce those. They're also not "reproductions" since they're not outright bootlegs, nor are they quasi-licensed releases attempting to replicate the originals.
This is admittedly a little bit of a fuzzy grey area, but pedantry aside it is generally agreed that "reproduction" is simply a euphemism for a bootleg, which is an outright unlicensed and unauthorized copy.
The first 100 percent officially licensed game to come out post lifecycle will be Dracula X on the PC Engine if LRG ever manages to actually finish the release. In that case, Konami owns both the rights to the game and the console and granted LRG a license to officially publish the game.

                >I recall NES and Famicom allowed other companies to manufacture games with their license.

On Famicom at first anyone could do what they wanted, but that changed after the NES, in two steps, first with FDS disks, and then with cartridges. Tengen did have a license but as with other publishers they wanted to release more games and refused to incorporate additional companies and pay more licensing fees to do it, so they cloned Nintendo's lockout system to release unlicensed games. You can read about this in more detail on Wikipedia.

I was just poking around in the data for Gimmick Special Edition (Switch version) and discovered a ROMs folder.
The two Gimmick ROMs in there for the Japanese and European releases weren't surprising, but I was surprised to see that U-four-ia The Saga was in there.

                The exact contents were:
                >Name: Mr Gimmick (NES) PAL-B SCN.nes
                >Size: 393232 bytes (384 KiB)
                >CRC32: BBF010E3
                >SHA1: d6f344440f796f3e081ae786e67aed7c08c856e4

                >Name: RealGimmick.nes
                >Size: 393232 bytes (384 KiB)
                >CRC32: EEB6B362
                >SHA1: 9974006ce28678f1f30c1f1292b9173572eb36d0

                >Name: U-four-ia (NES) PAL-B NOE.nes
                >Size: 262160 bytes (256 KiB)
                >CRC32: 31973A56
                >SHA1: 5bafcf8e37417b38ecec32e12b82df162b6405cb

These all hash-match known ROMs in the no-intro database, so nothing new. Just the presence of U-four-ia in there was surprising as I'm not aware of it being advertised as a bonus game or known as an unlockable bonus.
If I had to guess, the developers were using it to test their NES emulator, as one of the wholly original and fully owned NES titles in their Sunsoft library.

Yup I'd heard that the iam8bit carts had this voltage issue that could fry original hardware. Apparently not an issue for replica/emulator consoles.

It also had some leftover graphics from Abarenbo Tengu & Zombie Nation, a re-release of the Famicom / NES titles onto modern systems. They presumably re-used the framework to develop this release.

Oh I have every intention of buying it anyway, I'll probably even splurge on the collector's edition.
I just think the price point is a bit high and a bit difficult to justify, but given the nature of their wares (limited physical distribution of games for collectors and enthusiasts), I can let it slide.

these "limited editions" are getting so tacky. you used to get an artbook, ost or a poster, maybe a figure. but who the frick is actually going to wear that pin and what are you going to do with that coin anyway. a stand to display it for the coomlection, really? it's like a caricature of consumerism, except they're actually serious.

Unfortunately LRG's Shantae releases go for silly money in the after market, especially the ones that weren't open pre-order.
This was especially true for the actually limited print of Pirate's Curse on Switch, and I expect the recent print run of the 3DS version to sell similarly high.

I mean, at least a Rolex is a finally crafted hand fitted piece of miniaturized clockwork made of precious metals.
This is a shitty game anyone can play for free two clicks away. I seriously can not believe someone bought that for 431 USD.
It’s not even an old game or a piece of history, it’s basically glorified indie trash.

potentially a graphical glitch somewhere or maybe it will crash before the ending credits
            probably not though
the checksum is just sniffing the file for accuracy ala "burn verification" like when you copy a cd to a cdr

I think only just color, unfortunately. They unsurprisingly bought into the clueless zoomer definition of DX "just means colorized" and greedily and lazily tried to use that to their advantage (typical of Limited Run Gays).

I read somewhere that it has "remastered sound", but I'm assuming that just refers to a soundtest or something on the Switch/Steam package. All I've seen on this ROM so far is an updated copyright and title screen.

Same. I feel like there's something i'm not getting about it. A lot of the enemies just bounce off you with no damage. You just kind of walk around until the boss. Maybe it's just the early levels, I don't know.

I was playing through it a few days ago and I will say something I like, is how it comes off a lot less like typical platformers of the era and in a way has, idk if you would call it the first hints at more indie/atmospheric scrollers of the current era. By which I mean, you really dont know what to expect from enemies when you encounter them and there really are no standard foes you see through the entire game. You have a weird big enemy that just follows you around, even onto the next screen, then never appears again. You have a weird little man jump out of the grass and do a dance and it never appears again. An owl thing on a bridge you hit and it just falls off, never to be seen again. It's like they were just throwing in a bunch of ideas into a gameboy tech demo or trying to play with the expectations of the player in what they think they know about a standard 2D action/platformer game.

I suppose, but i cant say i personally played anything like it from that era. It feels less pretentious to me and more like some jap devs just goofing around with random ideas while also experimenting with the GB. Seems like they had fun designing a bunch of little sprites.

Keep an eye on Videogamesplus. They're a Canadian retailer that sells some stock of LRG releases when they actually complete manufacturing. It's good for second-chance sales, but it's limited stock.

There was some stock of the LRG GBC prints of Xtreme Sports, Hime's Quest, and Toki Tori on there, all sold out though.

I would say thats insane, but you literally could not find it on store shelves. I actively wanted a copy back when it came out and never once did I see it for sale new. I didnt have internet at the time, so maybe i could have snagged a copy that way while it was still reasonable, but I never even saw the damn thing up for sale and only the ads in Nintendo Power gave me any kind of knowledge it existed.

        Anonymous

It was a late releasw GBC game that even with Capcom's publishing didnt got the luck of enough copies shipped, and at the end it turned out a bit of an overhyped experiment that only kept coming back because it was literally the pet project of its creator that he was able to do by taking development of many mediocre chash in titles.

          Anonymous

I recall hearing something to the effect of "If you want any Resident Evil stock you gotta buy some units of Shantae too", it was Capcom's way of getting Shantae onto shelves and helping Wayforward out.
I think their work on Wendy Every Which Way probably made them stand out, and Capcom was willing to give them a shot.

Wayforward primarily are a hired-help company that makes licensed games, with varying results.
For every Mummy Demastered, Contra 4 and Ducktales Remastered, there was something like Hotel Transylvania, Rescue Heroes: Billy Blazes, or Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper.
They made what's considered on one of the DS's worst titles ever: Ping Pals (a local chat client for a system with a built-in local chat), but that's sometimes said to be the fault of THQ wanting it made.

A GBA title by Wayforward that often gets forgotten is Sigma Star Saga. Just looking at the character designs, they fit right in with the sort you see in titles like Mighty Switch Force.

Slightly related, Jake "Virt" Kaufman is best known for working with Wayforward as a freelancer, but he's done plenty of other work, even stuff like an M&M's Minis game on GBC.

You take the work you can get.

I wonder if WayForward will attempt to revive that 3D Shantae from the gamecube now. I dont think they have ever done a fully 3D game, but maybe they could do it as a 2.5D scroller for the N64 and modern systems.
