played 5 and 6, and both are quite fun
keep in mind that citybuilding is nowhere near simcity, but politics plays a far bigger role and you get to play through several eras and customize your little banana republic into a dictatorship (or non-dictatorship) of your preference
the best part by far is the humor
Tropico 4 is the best one.
It has a great story campaign, which may not at first seem like a big deal for a city builder, but trust me it is.
None of these Tropico games have figured out how to keep the game as engaging once you've successfully built a good island.
Once you have a strong economy and have met the needs of your people, you're basically set.
This means that the early part of any Tropico game is the best.
And the campaign mode (which is a series of well designed challenges which change the way the game is played while also having unique, fun characters and dialogue and a interesting main story) is the best way to keep you from island to island.
Also the city building mechanics are much better.
Instead of having every building being based around at least 1 tile radius, the building in 4 is way more free-form. You can make custom gardens with individual trees, fountains, and statues which all have actual gameplay purpose.
These gardens can be built anywhere, which means that any empty space inbetween roads can be used and made to look nice.
Which allows the player to not be restricted to a pure grid if they don't wish to have unfillable empty spots in the middle of their city like in 5 and 5.
Tropico 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, I highly recommend you play it
>These gardens can be built anywhere, which means that any empty space inbetween roads can be used and made to look nice.
This, one of my favourite parts of Tropico 4 is making my island look organic and real, small gardens where nothing can fit, commie block neighborhoods of half a dozen equal buildings, the colonial looking buildings all together in the 'old part' of the capital, small villages with their own purpose (agricultural/mining/tourism), placing barrels, tire piles and water towers in the poor parts to make them look shitty but lived in.
Might not be efficient but that's how I like to play Tropico

5 but worse, economy is just broken, less white man's Latin, more white woman's Black

can you explain

3 is basically a beta version of 4 and lacks an interconnected campaign. Just one off scenarios
3 is still good, since it's the same game as 4 mechanically.
It lacks as good of a campaign as 4, and some extra mechanics introduced in 4 (which was basically an expansion pack turned into a sequel)
3 does have better music than 4.
the best experience is just playing 3's music while playing 4.
Am I the only one who think that 4 graphics is a huge downgrade to 3?
no, you're not. after tropico 3 it became fruity garbage for graphics. three was the last installment that looked like a gritty, dirt banana republic that you could gradually clean up and modernize with city planning.
even the trees in 3 look more like trees, and had more immersive animations.
after four it became a neon fest. like some artists idea of miami built entirely out of fruity skittles
>white mans latin
>white womens black
Top kek makes perfect sense
I think that with 6 they changed the developer. 3, 4 and 5 are from the same developer.
Tropico 4 is my favorite as well. it's just so comfy. it feels like you have more freedom to build what you want where you want. being able to fill in vacant spots between buildings with gardens or whatever is also big. i rediscovered the mod that lets you build old buildings with modern times activated and it's just pure kino.
link to mod? The only thing I like about modern times is the fact the farms have their own plots of land instead of being random.
Mod is called LockNot

frick yeah, el presidente
The campaign is good because it forces you to ditch the typical min/max strats and focus on the objectives. But big part of Tropico is larping anyway and it gets boring if you just always pick the best traits and economics. Tropico let's you be very creative, you just have to think outside of the box
>None of these Tropico games have figured out how to keep the game as engaging once you've successfully built a good island.
>Once you have a strong economy and have met the needs of your people, you're basically set.
Are there any city builders that aren't like this?
4 or 5. 6 is mobile game tier
frostpunk or ixion apparently
>frostpunk or ixion apparently
Those are more of a colony builder than a city builder.

tropico 4 is too easy. most of the time the answer to anything is produce more rum.
Honestly my biggest issue with it.
I don't mind games being on the easier end but T4 is easy to the point where several mechanics are utterly invalidated. There's barely any point to different voter groups or different international powers, because it's easy as frick to make everyone love you just by playing as normal.
Except maybe the environmentalists but frick 'em.
When the environmentalists protest in front of my factories I just shoot them one by one until they stop
The solution to most of my problems in Tropico 4 right there.
true. I loved 3 because of the silly radio but 4 was amazing. I played it a bit last month and thought "hmm maybe i should check the new versions that i never played". Big mistake, i hate everything about tropico 6. Less perks, presidente is unfunny and dead and the constant requests from the AI are just annoying
This post convinced me to buy Tropico 4, and I've loved it. Thank you for that. Sasha's voice makes me diamonds.
Hell yeah man, I love to hear it!
Tropico 4 has a fantastic cast of characters which are really underappreciated. My favorites are Sunny Flowers and Penultimo. Though the alcoholic priest is great too.
>best one
>has no Juanito
Second best one*
Which of the DLCs for 4 is worth it?
Only one I would even use is Modern Times.
You can get the complete edition for next to nothing during a sale
>tfw you crash the Caribbean labor market because you're growing so fast and big you have to max wages for everyone
3 and 4 are comfy but formulaic, 5 and 6 take 1 step forward and 2 steps back, the more they deviate from sim city style building to eras and research the less comfy it gets
They all have shit graphics except 6, the only one worth playing
4 by far, it has the most fun campaign, theme and gameplay, 5 has cool concepts like continuity on campaigns but it saddly removed some contents and has some poorly made others.
Is tropico 4 worth the $15? My ISP is mad at me
O Say, Can You See
capitalism moment
Sure. I got my copy for free but had a ton of fun with it.

Half off on GoyG right now. Alternatively get a seedbox for a month at half that price and get enough old games to last until you become an hero.

It's okay, but I've never been happy with it after 4. It's just "Tropico 3: The Search for More Money" over and over again. Not even stuff like tourism's unprofitability compared to industry has been fixed, it's just the same resource extraction simulator every time with a few new additions.
tourism is busted, tourist dock + a few motels is huge reliable income
yeah tourism is great at least at the beginning since its instant cash
>Motels.
Touristlet detected. If you really want to rake in the money in T4 literally just ignore everyone except spring break tourists.
In T5 is the culture tourists.
They ignore industry and ugliness just to visit your starting houses and cum to death at the sight of my anti-invasion turret grid.
I could get tourism to work in 3 and 4 but it was god awful in 5. Never played 6
You can get tourism to work, it's just never as profitable as industry.
Yes it is. Trousim is even easier than industry. It's just import tourits and build bars.
Doesn't it have a cap?
It does, I think the max is 300-500 but that just makes it easier. Literally just focus on spring break with a side of rich tourists and you'll rake in the cash. They don't actually need that many workers to keep things fine and most of the buildings that they prefer are actually pretty cheap.
>but it was god awful in 5.
I remember it clogging roads.
1, then 2.
Rest is shit.
>playing anything but alpha phase of 1
Soft b***h you are
I meant what I wrote. 1 and 2 had soul. After that, it progressively became worse, and the humour part was turned to way over the board.
the first 1 is fricking hard

Do it for him.
4 taught me that I have no idea how to make good road layouts in city builders. Always wind up with massive traffic jams. How to make good roads, El Presidente?
never build 4-way intersections and avoid loops
Pathfinding in city builders is usually moronic.
A general rule of thumb is to avoid a grid. Think of how water flows into smaller streams that feed into bigger rivers, public transportation, and parking.
In sim city I build a city with only one road as a challenge, and it spiraled into the center of the map. The city ended up being massive, but surprisingly very little traffic since there was nowhere for it to jam except where I cheated with the overlaps with connections to other cities. I used a lot of bus stops, which worked because there was just the one route. The city did so well I eventually built a subway system going in the cardinal directions and it was the only time I had a subway system that wasn't a massive economic drain and saw heavy use.
Tropico 6 would be a lot better if it didn't rely on gimmick buildings and if people refused to work jobs that were too far away from their home or the transportation near it.
tropicans in 5 and 6 are way more picky about homes, in 3 and 4 you can beat anything with a giant apartment cube
>tropicans in 5 and 6 are way more picky about homes
Not in my experience; people would happily live right next to a dirty factory or on the other side of the island no matter what housing or transportation was offered, and the marriage mechanic basically guaranteed that one spouse would live far away from their job. That combined with the milque toast politics and underdeveloped transportation requirements/options killed my interest.
What interesting stories do you have from these games, I remember in Tropico 4 trying to make a banana-only economy and being surprised by how rich I got, my populatiopn was half farmers and half doctors, making a purposefully shitty area full of criminals and seeing the swat members automatically shoot them is also fun
I loved doing similar, creating class systems of sorts via setting the rents right. Something about having a clear divide in the city where just looking at it you could see the upper or lower class part just did it for me.
Is 6 worth it on sale? I loved 4 and thought 5 was meh
Love about how by the end of the game you control few cities along with the capital. Part of the capital from my last save with pop around 1400
Tropico 4 is best. Most soul.
Number 3 is most nostalgic for me
How is Tropico 3? its in my backlog... i remember my brother buying the game and i gave him shit about it cause the graphics at the time seemed washed out and colorless compared to anno 1404.
3 is literally just remake of the first with some new features. Honestly it's the best one to play imo.
how does it compare to anno 1404? is it better or is anno 1404 superior?
Anno is strictly an economics min/maxer. You can play that way with tropico but it becomes very boring because it's very easy to just get lots of money once you understand what makes money. The most fun you'll have with tropico is building up your island to make it look interesting. For instance tenements offer the best blend of housing quality and capacity per footprint and initial imvestment. But just spamming them everywhere is soviet russia tier planning and not latin socialist republic planning. When I make a little farming village outside the main city I put down some country houses and bunk houses.
If you played 4 you played 3
3 is good, it's pretty much 4 but with less features.
1 still has the best soundtrack
?si=nuKzNuYr_umHOs4v
doesn't 1 and 2 have the same soundtrack?
i've only played 4 but i like it a lot so i will recommend that one.
I like the scale of tropico 6.. but the fundamental mechanics on how pops satsify their demands just doesn't work if you try and use the scale. They end up commuting for months.
3, 4 and 5 are the good ones. 4 is the best one.
