Knowing that the characters are 100% not gonna die unless the story wants them to die makes me lose all interest. I want a game where I can lose my favorite guy from a frickup on my part that could've been avoided, and the story just has to deal with that.
Permadeath is what gives weight to a tactical game. Without it, nothing has weight because you know your mistakes don't have consequences.
I don't have to fear for my best soldier, because I know that even if he gets shot in the head, he will be good as new later. In other games such as XCOM or Battle Brothers, I am incredibly engaged because every decision can mean life or death for my soldiers.
I can understand if you find this too frustrating, that's ok. But saying it's "bad design" is cope

1. units suck unless you grind for good abilities, meaning tactics are meaningless
2. the Korean grinds my ears, it's so bad
