It just depends on the series, Dragon Quest 1 on the NES doesn't have any Kanji because of data limits, and also has only half the katakana for the same reason.
I've been waiting for an FF thread but didn't want to make one myself. I haven't played a single game, but was interested in 7. Is it true it has literal, unironic NTR? I'm really autistic about that and avoid any game with it.
He's really not bad if you know what to use and when, not like you spam attack 80+ percent of the time. Great free early game AOE, second only to Edgar, or third to sabin depending what you consider early game
You're supposed to look up all the words you don't know every time you see them, add them to an anki deck, and feel the intense urge to smash your own skull in when you review that anki deck, recognize that you've seen that kanji before, but for the life of you can't remember the reading no matter how many times you see it.
From the one class of Japanese I took over 10 years ago in high school: >Kimi no Bandana (Your Bandana) >No fricking clue, those kanji are too much >Jewel Ring >Onnarigi no ??? (Womans _____) >Amulet >White Tape
Get the Kodansha Kanji Learners Dictionary for the Kanji.
katakana is easy as frick, its literally just an alternate pronunciation of english. ive learned most of them by just "sometimes looking at the katakana page on wikipedia" and seeing them on other wiki pages which include japanese names of things.
the real answer is that games suck to start learning japanese with, they're good from intermediate up. You want to read a book or a texthooked vn where you can just focus on reading and can easily look up words at first. After you read one or two lns you'll be able to read all that shit easy and can start playing japanese games
Don't play games with furigana. Step the "okay I'm used to reading with furigana now I will try to break away from relying on furigana altogether" phase.
Both would be great choices for a beginner, though I heard hanahira is pretty boring. I personally started with Kanon and did fine. Make sure to texthook for easy lookups
i havent started cause im lazy and i know ill give up after like a week

literally just start and take a break when you feel like it
it's what i'm doing and i'm winning, it just takes a little longer than grinding it out like an asian student but you won't burn out
i mean i guess if you have an iron will but ocring all my items and taking hours to get through the tutorial made games really unfun for me when i was a noob
you should be doing this while studying vocab on the side
i mean i guess if you have an iron will but ocring all my items and taking hours to get through the tutorial made games really unfun for me when i was a noob
You have to pronounce the katakana in the most ESL, the most moronic fricking way to guess what it means.
And when it turns out to be a Dutch loanword, you are completely fricked.
>1 point from passing N2 in 2019 >COVID cancels tests for a while and I also just forget to sign up multiple times >2 points from passing N1 last year
But playing games in Japanese has been the best way to study reading; I've never actually actively studied cards or anything in years
I took a couple Japanese classes in undergrad (to about N4) and did an internship in Tokyo in 2018 for a few months
I came back to Japan last year and work in Tokyo full time now
it's been a minute since i went over my kanji, but now that you point it out, at least i remember silver is gin so my brain isn't completely rotten yet
>星のペンダント
star pendant >銀緑眼鏡
silver-green mirror >ジュエルリング
jewel ring or israeliteeled ring >安らぎの指輪
tranquility's finger or tranquility ring >ホワイトケープ

didn't take that long to look these up, you're supposed to constantly look up new words and stuff, add them to a mining deck, increase your memorization of words that way.
ok but this is what I don't understand. I know 瑞 is "zui" and 瑞鳳 is "zui-ho" but then how come when you write it in 瑞穂 it becomes "mizu-ho" so the first rune that's the same is pronounced different and the second rune that's different is pronounced the same?
because Japan borrowed Chinese characters, so most of them have separate Japanese and Chinese-ish readings.
https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/onyomi-kunyomi/
I'm supposed to learn these Lores but I missed fighting "Trapper" when escaping the magitek factory. Can we say it's truely "Owari Da" (終わり だ) [it's over]. ?
It's funny how emoticon has basically disappeared from the vernacular and emoji has taken its place, though. I don't care enough to look it up, but I imagine apple did it.
I don't really see it with 終わり、but 名前 is so crazy close that I've wondered if the two are related in some way. There's also of course 缶/Kan、骨/Hone(Even pronounced bone in compounds)、買/Bai、斬る/Kiru and I found 沙 to be easy to learn since it starts with an S

I learned japanese for porn, and I regret it, not because there's not enough content, but because there's too much and now I'm wasting my life gooning hours every day.
>got any novel reccs?
Nope, I just fap to pixiv pics, doujins, CG sets wih 300+ images (these almost never get translated), RPGMaker porn games and lately I've been into DLsite ASMRs. Japanese ASMR is on a whole 'nother level compared to western garbage, english-only coomers will never understand.
i wish i could enjoy ASMR, it's just cringe to me in any language

ASMR is a pretty blanket term and frankly I don't even like using it for the japanese audio works because it's tainted by the garbage western shit, however it covers anything from ear licking experience, girl narrating a hot sex scenario, just the sounds of girl moaning while being massaged and eventually fricked, hypnosis, NTR reports, fap instructions, etc. It's more likely that you just didn't find what you like rather than that you don't like it period. (Unless you find sound in normal porn cringe as well and watch it muted.)
That being said it's a slippery slope and I don't recommend anyone to start going down that hole because it'll ruin your life.

>watch it muted
yeah
to be fair, i DID find some works where the moaning was actually that, real moaning instead of the hysteric theatrical screeching you get in 99% of porn, and that was pretty good
but good luck finding stuff like that

I can only enjoy porn audio if I can't understand it, it basically turns everything into different types of moans. It's so rare that there's audio in anything (I'm mostly a doujin guy and sometimes ero games) that it's almost an alien concept to me.
you unlock all the japanese dlc

Yes.
Make up funny names, then.
Let's see, the second one I'll name the "Double Tounger" because of the two kanji with their tongue sticking out.
I tried just picking relics randomly but then my healer got the dragoon jump.. maybe a learning opportunity..
wait a second, wanikunny taught me 銀 is silver, and since it's ff6 銀* must be silver specs!!
No thanks localizer
>spend a week learning hiragana/katakana
nice, I can read basic shit in rpgs now
>kanji shows up
It just depends on the series, Dragon Quest 1 on the NES doesn't have any Kanji because of data limits, and also has only half the katakana for the same reason.
yeah its mainly snes onwards. My fav is Rockman 2 though, entire game is in katakana because ???
to save space probably. phantasy star is also in all katakana. not sure how rockman of all things would be struggling for space though.
The older pokemon games don't have kanji, as does the original megami tensei for the super famicom.
stick to games for 10 year olds that include the furigana
Give up.
don't listen to the people telling you to avoid kanji. that's fake immersion, no different from people avoiding doing things in japanese entirely.
People need to be warned at the very start that kanji actually makes things easier in the long run.
The fear of kanji meme needs to die.
Try to play final fantasy on the NES/SNES and then the pixel remaster versions and see which is easier to understand even though it's the same script
I've been waiting for an FF thread but didn't want to make one myself. I haven't played a single game, but was interested in 7. Is it true it has literal, unironic NTR? I'm really autistic about that and avoid any game with it.
No, just play it
bro are you autistic? nothing made before the year 2010 will have a fetish in it that's in your face
Bahamut Lagoon was released in 1996 THOUGH.
Yes.
True.
He should play Live-A-Live to avoid NTR.
Never mind I risked spoiling myself and looked it up and there is literal NTR. Frick off c**ts not playing cuckshit
cloud is a cuck, vincent is a cuck, who else
Stop living on the internet dickhead
You're wrong of course, but it's your loss.
Just play DQ, much better franchise
It's not anyones fault that Vincent is in a cuckcoffin
wow you sound really really moronic

ok u guys are nihongo experts but can u pick the right rage in 0.2 seconds?

Careful there, looks like it says Brain Sugar. No idea what that does though.
this is all basic N3 stuff
read a book homie
n5 is basic not n3

N3 is kindergarten level
N5 is moronic Black person level

C'mon anon, all of these are unironically n5 tier kanji, the only exception is 銀縁 due to being sorta obscure.
星 and 指輪 are n4, otherwise good point

ok op now add the kanji to anki
oh shit i have the white cape that's pretty good
>anki
flashturds can stay on Ganker but never enter /djt/ ever again
im too lazy to study what if i just brute force and only play everything in japanese
You're supposed to look up all the words you don't know every time you see them, add them to an anki deck, and feel the intense urge to smash your own skull in when you review that anki deck, recognize that you've seen that kanji before, but for the life of you can't remember the reading no matter how many times you see it.
I've been studying japanese for years and the excruciating pain that comes with learning kanji never goes away. Would do it again

op here im a moron and i know the first one is star pendant
I'm drunk, the "kimi" 君 kanji kinda looks similar and again, I've been drinking, sorry. Pretty sure I'm right about the rest
you only got israeliteel ring and amulet right
bro if you think kimi looks like hoshi you would have no chance with summer (natsu) vs wheat (mugi)
homie I took a class in HS I don't remember shit
I'm pretty sure I got the last one right, if it isn't "White Tape" then what is it?
white cape,i havent even studied a single second of japanese and knew that
white cape bro
also the woman with the roof on top of her head equals safe for some reason
>Woman
nope, that kanji is the one for relax or rest or peacefulness
Jesus, man.
wait I just found the solution to not being able to read the relics
Why would you play the game in Japanese if you have no idea how to read Japanese
trying to learn
Uh
Silver green something something
silver specs (glasses)
the thing is, it's not just the 6 relics u guys have been staring at for 30 minutes. there are pages and pages of them.
katakana is easy as frick, its literally just an alternate pronunciation of english. ive learned most of them by just "sometimes looking at the katakana page on wikipedia" and seeing them on other wiki pages which include japanese names of things.

should i play that nekopara game? or maybe hanahira then...
anything that's not chuni is basically the same difficulty just read whatever
play wild arms series. they have furigana
Seconding this, it's more fun too if you've watched Symphogear so you can spot all the original jokes that were referenced in those shows
Katakana was a mistake
Don't play games with furigana. Step the "okay I'm used to reading with furigana now I will try to break away from relying on furigana altogether" phase.
Both would be great choices for a beginner, though I heard hanahira is pretty boring. I personally started with Kanon and did fine. Make sure to texthook for easy lookups
What this anon said. Start with albatross and then play vidya. It's easier to play when you can texthook
texthook is cheating hto
so I should just feel it out?
aaaaaaaaghh
wrong
whatever is the most engaging form of media for you is the correct thing to be doing
if you love vidya, you should play vidya
t. n6bro
this n6bro is beating japanese vidya while you jerk off your study methods
i havent started cause im lazy and i know ill give up after like a week
literally just start and take a break when you feel like it
it's what i'm doing and i'm winning, it just takes a little longer than grinding it out like an asian student but you won't burn out
i will pinch your cheeks
you should be doing this while studying vocab on the side

You have to pronounce the katakana in the most ESL, the most moronic fricking way to guess what it means.

just learn german before you learn japanese, easy
>1 point from passing N2 in 2019
>COVID cancels tests for a while and I also just forget to sign up multiple times

how did u make it from nothing to n2
I took a couple Japanese classes in undergrad (to about N4) and did an internship in Tokyo in 2018 for a few months
I came back to Japan last year and work in Tokyo full time now
Read books and visual novels
Simple as
The first one is the hardest since you will be slow as shit but it gets easier the longer you grind
this. passed n1 already and I learnt from games
my recommendation btw

It does have the same radical for woman, so I can understand the beginner confusion
Hiragana is actually not that intimidating.
hiragana is easy but katakana is hard for some reason even tho its the same thing
this game started with strong believable character writing and then just falls off a cliff as the shitty story progresses
since when is there a 3d ff6
but that's grandia 2
k im sure all the intellects here know all my items
>play untranslated game
>learn a bunch of runes through memorization
>know "twin high angle gun" but still can't read simple sentences
that's chinese
no it's honmono nihongo
No, you pick up a visual novel with a texthooker and anki.
that sounds like too much work.. i don't like to read.. can't i just play a game?
you can easily get to the point where you can read all of this in 6mo, try study.
it literally said white cape though.
you can learn katakana in like 2 hours.
since when does white begin with aka?

you're right, it's 銀縁眼鏡, silver-rimmed mirror.
you're forgetting the 3rd kanji
aren't mirrors actually backed with silver? That's what makes it a fricking mirror.
stupid japs.
Silver rimmed as in a mirror that looks like pic related
You'll need a basic grasp on English first lil bro
anon...
mirror is 鏡
see

the kanji are right, I just fricked up because 眼鏡 [めがね] has 鏡 [かがみ] in it and I saw that kanji and just went with mirror. simple mistake.
not one person has pointed out which of these rages are good because they're all reduced to sounding them out mora by mora like a 50iq moron
it's cringe how japanese use so many loanwords
not to mention how moronic they are like

it doesn't matter
just learn words in their entirety instead of each kanji
because Japan borrowed Chinese characters, so most of them have separate Japanese and Chinese-ish readings.

There's probably some sort of a rule to it but 99% of the time it's completely arbitrary whether kun or onyomi is used

Is it a coincidence that 終わり sounds like "over"?
Is it a coincidence that 名前 sounds like "name"?
I am starting to think that something fishy is going on.
The fact that emoji sounds a lot like the English portmanteau emoticon (emotion+icon), but is actually 絵文字 is nuts to me.
It's funny how emoticon has basically disappeared from the vernacular and emoji has taken its place, though. I don't care enough to look it up, but I imagine apple did it.
