Maybe you should run a game for people that want to play a game.

Soemtimes they do and we have amazing sessions.
Most of the time it is shit like this.
At least when I DM it's better. When I'm not DM the session might as well not happen.

Just roleplay the nearest NPC's reaction to their pop culture gibberish. After being attacked a few times for percieved insults, or declared a or a witch trying to lay a curse, they should stop that shit pretty soon and start staying in character for longer. Also give xp for any player who doesnt do it.

Yeah this will definitely work and you won’t be perceived as being “that guy” for no apparent reason.

Done that and similar to my group several times. I knew they would get annoyed and complain, but also that they enjoy my games too much and nobody else is willing to GM.

if you hate your players that much and feel compelled to try and correct their personalities like you would train a dog, you are better off using that effort to find a group that doesnt make it feel like a constant chore and bore to play you homosexual moron. The only thing your solution does is make the players angry, put more work on you, and make a fast process slow and passive aggressive.

I tell my players to give a handsignal for anything out of character. If it's something they're saying in response to npcs they said it. I'm not slowing down for an OOC joke, the games are long enough as it is. What that does is make pop culture references not funny if you have to raise your hand and say "Out Of Character" every fricking time.

I give xp bonuses for best in character jokes in a session. They want to be funny, like they're sitting there trying to think of jokes, so i help them focus on the games.

The people here who think penalties or playing with better players... no, you can fix the rules and fix stupid new players easy.

Make sure to have some deadly social encounters so they learn the rule.

Sometimes my friends just want to hang out. realtalk for just 5 minutes, we have jobs and lives and shit. Yeah the game is a scheduled weekly occurrence, but as far as I'm concerned that's only because if we didn't have a weekly obligation half the people wouldn't show up. The game is an excuse to hang out, not the other way around.

          Jesus Christ How Horrifying
This shit is all too common and I wonder if there's a good word or phrase to describe those who partake in activities just to interact with others.

Everyone does this. It's why most normal people have a large circle of friends and you have maybe 2.

It's also why "normal people" never achieve anything of note and constantly treat people who do like some untouchable angels of genius.

What happened to people having actual passion for some activity as opposed to using it as a surrogate for their emotional b***h problems?

          >Sometimes my friends just want to hang out
I feel like a stick in the mud grognard nowadays. Playing the game normally IS hanging out. Shooting the shit about our real lives is hanging out too. You can even turn the game into an impromptu stand up set as long as you're creative. We're not "hanging out" if all you do is implicitly remind me about memes and media. It's fun to make a reference once in a while. I do enjoy it when it's well-timed. But I can't laugh if I hear you reference a Vine you watched eight whole fricking years ago for the 100th time. I didn't even laugh the 3rd time. People dedicate over half of their personality to nothing but one-liners. It began as obnoxious but now it's sad.

    >get some people together to play a game
    >they just want to banter, gossip, socialize, and chat
I get it, it's fun to catch up and there's lots of things to talk about. But holy shit I don't care how Nancy's baby shower went. We're an hour and a half into fighting the dreaming demon and we're still talking about the fricking weather and that weird clunk your car has been making lately. Skip the facade and we can just meet up for lunch earlier and get it out of the way.
People talk about red flags and bad people for games, but even some of the worst still actually want to play the game.

At least Dark Souls is somewhat like OSR games instead of snowflake freakshit. I've never played the game but I've heard it's challenging and unforgiving and has dark fantasy grotesqueries so that's cool IMHO.
