Turn based tactics is a stale genre from the past. No one enjoys turn based combat, it's just lame and tedious as frick. No one has time for that and you are just blinded because of nostalgia
>you have to wait and watch the game take it's turn, effectively pausing you out
Just give xcom 3 the FFVII Remake treatment and add a waifu in it and you got a decent game.
The only way I can really envision it as a worthwhile thing is if it's basically Peace Walker or MGSV era MGS, where you're simultaneously doing missions, and building up a base, and recruiting guys on the field. That could be fun.
If it's just Left 4 Dead with Aliens, that could be any other game, really.
>Just give xcom 3 the FFVII Remake treatment
They already made multiple real time combat X-Coms, and people didn't buy them.
It doesn't help that XCOM 2 took a step forward from UFO Defense's sim design (unit tiredness) and 5 steps back with the individualistic capeshit design. >bonds and traits suggest guys will survive long enough to have some kind of character >figured all of the tragedy-hype around Shadow of Modor having its systems patented meant something of substance, instead get fricking annoying jobbers that use annoying fricking abilities while taking up your time by having an autistic chuunibyou monologue when you make LOS >rulers still existing >insistence on alpha strike with bullshit units like Spectres
I dread XCOM 3's announcement. Just release a press statement deconfirming 3. Just put the series on ice again. I doubt a good premise like inverting the concept of XCOM as an invading force on the alien homeworld would salvage Firaxis's efforts.
The Bureau was actually pretty good. I wish we got more Mass Effect-likes.
xcom 2 was such an unholy disappointment
could have been an amazing alien resistance simulator, having to use a lot more rookies or otherwise disposable squadmates due to the disjointed nature
instead you get gay power rangers flying across the planet beating up marvel villains
I think the future is them mixing with other genres. Jagged Alliance 3 was the best TBT from 2023 and I bet my ass Urban Strife will be in 2024. Both are RPGs too and have gimmick mechanics besides the combat.
But pure TBTs? The closest things are Xenonauts 2 and End State but they have almost no budget.
And then there are Japanese titles that are their own thing.
The sequel to Phantom Doctrine is a third person stealth game I believe that retains some of the same elements of leading an agency and changing identity and stuff like that. I don't mind the change, it was a poor man's xcom anyway. The agency stuff was the cool part, so hopefully it doesn't have a named protagonist.
it's a fairly standard turn based tactics. Individual ships are generic and replenish between missions, but pilots (who can be reassigned freely) get some bonus stats for going multiple missions without dying. One of the main gimmicks is that while your normal attacks only target a single unit most units have an AOE wave cannon attack that charges by not getting attacked for multiple turns. As for why that red robot is an butthole, his wave cannon has a single turn cooldown and is 6 tiles long. For reference the basic starter ship is 3 turns with 4 tile range. Also he's an enemy only unit. until you beat the game and unlock the alien campaign, and you get to use them yourself.
Name one (1) upcoming TBT game you'd be willing to put money on is going to turn out good. You literally can't. They're all either small studios not able to release a game or completely in dev hell. All of the ones I've followed have stopped releasing news or updates long ago
Not really
TRPG-TBT hybrids like nu-xcom are plagued by moronic devs who don't even understand why nu-xcom games are good, so they just make what shitters ask for (manual aim, no hit%, etc), TBT games like xenonauts are destined to have worst artists in the world, I dunno why, but I'd rather play pic related than something that looks like facebook browser game (xenonauts 2)
Anyone play the Front Mission remake? I have it, because I got it cheap, but now I have to decide if I actually want to put time into this, or one of about ten other games I could be playing.
Playing Xcom clones just makes me want to play Xcom again. They don't have destructable walls and usually have one or two enemy types. If they do something to stand out it's usually a shit idea
Custom merc is free, you don't have any reason to don't have it. Take a eye on ammo. Get a secondary squad ASAP, you need to rotate resting and training so having just one is not safe. Somethings you can miss: in the map screen you can manage inventory and leave items in the current sector that you can recover later. When you hire a merc consider expanding the initial time of service because it saves money in the long run.

when the FRICK will we get turn-based tactical pokemon ranger?
go in with your human and one or two partner mons, recruit a few mons on the spot for the mission, then go shit ranging from park ranger shit (help people escape forest fire or dam break), to typical anti-evil team stuff, to calming down rampaging strong mons, etc
some good ideas they didn't know how to implement, quipy marvel shit, strategy layer doesn't take itself seriously enough it might as well not exist, all in all it's kinda shit
Not a bad budget title in the XCom name but writing is mostly lame, it lacks the customization of the other games, and some mechanics are sorely missed.
Fans were so used to great post release content they were upset to see nothing for CS
>turn cute lil ethiopian sectoids into boring big men
>turn herodotus' nomadic pygmy Ethiopians into classical sedentary ethiopians
games used to mean somerthing

bg3 sold like a gorillion copies and made almost as many people into gay furries
>Just give xcom 3 the FFVII Remake treatment
They already made multiple real time combat X-Coms, and people didn't buy them.
NTA but that was kinda before the revival of the genre with enemy unknown.
I'd love a new attempt at a real time game. Kinda like that alien game that came out recently but with better polish.
The only way I can really envision it as a worthwhile thing is if it's basically Peace Walker or MGSV era MGS, where you're simultaneously doing missions, and building up a base, and recruiting guys on the field. That could be fun.

Haven't played it but I'll take you word for it.
I'd rather not have another 3rd person shooter in my tbs games though thank you.
It's good. I like using lift on turrets for free firepower. I like the premise and execution of a secret war raging in '60s America.
>just make controls more worse for absolutely no reason
morons like you are why we have games where you need to press 5 buttons for a single action
xcom 2 was such an unholy disappointment
could have been an amazing alien resistance simulator, having to use a lot more rookies or otherwise disposable squadmates due to the disjointed nature

I thought it was nice
Wish it was about another invasion instead of systemic infiltration
Makes it seem like the first game's story is pointless

Future TBT titles I know of
>Mars Tactics
>Metal Slug Tactics
>End State
>Project Haven
TBT I've enjoyed the last couple years
>King Arthur: Knight's Tale
>Into The Breach
>BG3
>WarTales
>Fights in Tight Spaces
TBT I didn't enjoy that much
>Phantom Doctrine
>Partisans 1941
Partisans is not TBT, are you brain damaged? Also it's fun, frick you.
You're right, it's just a game that popped into my head as I was typing out my post. It was decent, but nothing special
Bottom left guy carried that team.
You can add Menace, Xenonauts 2, Urban Strife and USC Counterforce.
Ganker kept telling me that Xenonauts 2 was gonna be good because it was taking so long, then it came out and seemingly no one cares.
But it is still in early access.
>phantom doctrine
>phantom brigade
>both great ideas, awfulbexecution
Hmmm

into the breach is a puzzle game
still waiting for the R-Type tactics remakes. I heard the estimated release is fall this year.
frick this guy.
QRD on that game?

The mario rabbid games are better than xcom.

Being realistic, Menace.
This, but to be fair I loved Battle Brothers and still play it on and off.

Jagged Alliance 3 is great, I'd argue the genre is stronger than it's ever been.
I bought JA3 and played it for a few hours but dropped it when I had to move. When I pick it up again, any beginner tips?

aw. i liked warlock's diatribes

I'm pretty sure there was a pokemon tactics game though, pokemon conquest I think.
never played it so no idea if it's any good.
Torque aside, what do we think of Chimera Squad?
some good ideas they didn't know how to implement, quipy marvel shit, strategy layer doesn't take itself seriously enough it might as well not exist, all in all it's kinda shit
If the art style was better I'd like it more but I did enjoy it.
Scripted to hell, basically unplayable
The concept would work if it was less rigid though

I completely forgot about Tactical Breach Wizards lmao
oh yeah I remember seeing videos for that years ago. Is it any good?
>look it up
>outcast
>emotional problems
>marvel quips in the trailer
red flag
Yeah that's looking high concept but I don't know if it will be good.
no
