turns out todd wasnt lying, cells are continuous
redditor found out that the map markers were taking too much space on the map and he disabled them via console commands and this allowed him to land in a cell close enough to see new atlantis in the distance

      is there underwater swimming?

        Anonymous

No, swimming is like walking except your perspective is like a foot lower. It's bizarre, you can jump into water from high up and when you land in the water you don't even dip down for a second, it's like you just landed on land. It's not like bethesda is rockstar that took however many years to figure out swimming, they've had it for ages. But now it's reduced to this. I really hope some rogue employees tell us more about what the frick happened with the development of this game.

Its the same engine as the games that all had swimming for decades, how did they lose it? How did we go all the way back to TES:Arena style surface bobbing?

I seriously have no good explanation for it other than maybe they couldn't get underwater terrain generation right

They don't want to bother with aquatic biomes, which to be fair would have to be more vast than land biomes due to how much easier life develops in water.

This needs to be up voted to front page. The misinformation against this game has been insane and unfair tbh. Imagine being a Bethesda developer spending 7 years on this game only for people to bash it with completely untrue claims whilst you yourself are not allowed to refute them.

But you can fast travel from where you are to a planet elsewhere depending on the distance from you. So why is a ship an issue? Also it's gay that when you clear the planet any squares you generate can be marked as cleared by scanning the landmarks

Probably because that would require loading multiple cells and Xbox can't handle that. The PC version is just a shitty port just like all other Beth games in the last 20 years.

Redditors are out here sucking each other off over this, but it really just makes me question wtf is going on at Bethesda even more. They went to the trouble of having a contiguous tile system across the planet, but then designed landing in such a way that it’s impossible to travel to adjacent tiles through normal gameplay. Is it just incompetence or what?

      Anonymous

      My speculation is
      >Todd planned to make his dream space game with full procedural planets you can fly across and flying between planets manually
      Scenario A:
      >was told that his game needs to be a streamlined big seller because xbox has nothing else and he's owned by microsoft now
      >hammer the game into a shape that he thinks will have more wide appeal and/or get rushed into releasing something less than you originally envisioned
      Scenario B:
      >realized they just didn't know how to do everything he wanted in their engine, mechanics roughly left in because they don't want to scrap months of work but systems are built around them

It's probably the second. You literally have a grav-jump fuel bar on your HUD that is WORTHLESS because you instantly refuel after a jump.

          Anonymous

That's to prevent you from making infinite air jumps. Like while you're in the air you just keep going up and up. And I think an air jump takes up half a bar so if you exhaust it, land for just a second and jump again you can only do 1 air jump and not two. You can argue it's not very thought out but it does serve a function.

            Anonymous

No, Anon. I mean the Helium-3 bar when you're in your ship. You can attach ballasts that let your ship carry more Helium-3 fuel too. And it exists for NO reason, because grav-jumps don't even consume it.

              Anonymous

Oh yeah that's stupid then. I haven't done much star jumping so I wasn't aware of it.

                Anonymous

It's so stupid. The even bar changes when you select different systems to calculate how much fuel it would've consumed, if the mechanic was inplemented.

                Anonymous

Really just seems like they gutted a ton of mechanics out of the game. Another thing, and this is much more speculative, is I think they may have actually planned to have seamless planet travel originally. I say this because they've clearly done a lot of work on improving loading times, I think this game loads faster than skyrim sometimes. If they had super fast loading they could just make your ship take off, fly through a cloud layer to distort the screen for a few seconds, and then boom you're in space. There would still be some smoke and mirrors, but you'd never have a hard cut.

                Anonymous

I was having 0.4 second load times, I think you might actually be right. Must not have panned out on the Xbox.

                Anonymous

I bet they had an oxygen system and that provided a soft barrier from going to far from your ship. So if you got that you may as well cut back the cell loading and use those resources else where. But then they realized normalgays hate having a timer no matter how generous it is. So they cut that but they already limited the space and they didn't want to waste time reworking it again.

                Anonymous

I almost laughed out loud when I realized the oxygen meter is just a fricking sprint meter. The MC is regularly depriving himself of oxygen and giving himself CO2 poisoning to sprint

                Anonymous

I vaguely remember Todd mentioning that they originally had a fuel system, but then decided that it wasn’t fun and got rid of it. I could see it being implemented if they release a survival mode type difficulty like FO4 had.

                Anonymous

If that's true, then all Todd did to "get rid of it" was make it so you get instant refuels, while leaving in dozens of useless features around it.

                Is Londinium in the game?

Yes, it's given a location near the end of the Terramorph questline. You learn where they come from there.

                How big is it?

                Anonymous

It was like 3-4 small-ish sections split up by loading screens, not sure if you could ignore the quest and walk over it. It's bigger than Neon, although there's basically nothing present but loot.

I can definitely see modders taking a crack at restoring some of these mechanics and otherwise removing the training wheels on the engine that Bethesda added for no discernible reason, but what I really want to see is expanded stuff in space for a viable spacer run where you can avoid ever landing on planets

            Anonymous

I think modders will unlock a lot of potential of this game. Implementing a system like this would probably be too much for modders, but if it already exists and just needs some tweaks that makes it far more feasible

        Anonymous

I'd vote for the second. I'd say A, if it wasn't for No Man's Sky existing. Normies would buy into a NMS on the Xbox if they claimed they did it 'better' and Xbox would love to have something like that too.

MS bought Bethesda late in starfield's development, anything left was polish, not major gameplay reworks

          Anonymous

The purchase was known about well in advance by those in charge. GaaS stuff like Redfall and F76 were forced on studios by zenimax, probably to make them more enticing for microsoft and to force out a better price, since GaaS were the hot thing then.

Is there literally ANY other proof that tiles are contiguous other than the ONE noticeable landmark that the devs probably handpicked to make observable from nearby tiles?

Any at all? Like, one example that people keep reposting doesn't account for the rest of the game, does it? Genuinely curious to see if this applies to any other landmark.

I don't mind needing to fast travel, but I hate that it's just a bunch of different cutscenes to do it. It should at least let me pick a destination and then seemlessly fly there without any cutscenes so I at least feel like I'm traveling somewhere

The fact it's literally cutscenes is so fricking lazy

Yeah I agree. If it all worked via fast travel like it does now but there were no hard cuts I'd be way more forgiving of the system, even if I still ultimately would not be a fan of it.

Ten years behind Minecraft. I do think in time mods will make the game great but yet again the preorder crowd foots the bill. It's been out for a few minute and have not seen one exciting thing about it

I get why they made the traversal the way it is, as no one is actually going to run around a planet in its entirety, except for key areas, but it still doesn't make it any less jarring and immersion braking knowing that the only option to travel beyond is going back to your ship, considering other titles did this in a more seamless way.
