I bought Type Lumina because I used to be an avid Melty Blood player. When I launched practice mode and noticed that all the combos that I used to do are now made by mashing one button I instantly felt depressed.
How do people cope with this oversimplified shit?
Why were you doing such pathetic combos?
By going to button layout 2 and making the autocombo follow-ups go on a separate button and not have them come out when you press the same button again.

Try C Arc, C Aoko or F-V Akiha, they have some neat routes
But yeah I wouldn't say Melty has the best combo game, for me that's probably Xrd. What I like about AACC is how good the confirms feel, BCBC airthrow isn't the most interesting route but when you get a weird air counterhit and just barely manage to pick up and stabilize into a real combo and oki it's rewarding as frick
I did like F-VAkiha but I don't want to play another top tier in a new discord game and be dodged if I actually do put the time into it

GGs, there were occasional hiccups but the connection was surprisingly decent
Yeah, it was fun, game has surprisingly good netcode.

Completely different game I'd say. This game's system is a mix of all 3 different moons. For example, here, shielding in blood rage gives you a last arc finish, regular shielding gives you a normal that combos on a failed guess or if the other guy is still recovering, heat is only activated manually, most older characters have their movesets based on their 3 moons (miyako has her pseudo-rekka and her flying kick) and so on. In regards to the differences, combo damage scales like a fricking lot so everyone will do the same amount of damage with a few exceptions like Shiki and Roa (not by a lot), 3C gives you an autojump, autocombos are optional, but they're important for some routes since there are moves that are exclusive to autocombos, motions like IAD and TK are way easier here, neutral is entirely based on moon drive and moon skill clashes, motions have been "standardized", characters will have a DP, a 236, a 214, a 22 and sometimes a 421. God I can spend all day here.

Hearing that makes me miss Cadenza and the freedom you had to frick around and do less optimized but more stylish combos like Ciel boxing combo opener 2B 6AA 4C 5CC or dumb hyper specific combos like near the wall Nanaya 214B 2B xx j. combos.
you can do style combos in tl, there just isn't much of a reason to besides maybe sideswap or corner carry.
otoh, that's the price of making an approachable game for newbies without ending up with a total abortion like strive but even so the game still ended up with like 200 players at best so they might as well have made it technical and obtuse as frick for all the difference it made
I find it bizarre how plain and unornamented the character designs are in these games, aka 'has no drip'
Most fighting games have unusual looking people being actually pretty grounded and normal, melty characters are monsters trying to look normal
That's just the late night urban setting the VN is set on translated to a fighting game. Under Night has its characters have more "style" since they didn't come from a pre-established somewhat realistic kind of fiction novel, so designers could go wild with characters like Mika and her big fricking granny bloomers
Tsukihime characters having subdued character designs was fantastic. Compared to modern Fate characters that look like they escaped a rainbow circus from the future it's far preferable.
I reckon DA Noel has some pretty good drip, as do Miyako and Vlov
