Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons

Anon told me to play this if I wanted a good naval trading game.
I'm loving the coziness and overall aesthetics, like pseudo-anime/JRPG inspired.
Decided to start as the Italian debtor, but if my play through goes South I may play as the Turkish guy, he looked cool.
Also, I'm playing the DOS version.
Any tips? Memories?

This shit is confusing as hell blind.
I'm like how do I save? Is it auto-saved?
How do I put men on lookout?
I love the music and vibes, but wtf am I doing lol.

Save the game in a church. If I'm not wrong, the church is replaced with a mosque in Middle Eastern ports.

      like this anon said,

      >Also, I'm playing the DOS version.
you're doing it wrong play the snes version you frick up

though I'd word it differently, the DOS version is really lacking in UX. I find it easier to play with the keyboard using the numpads to move and F1-F4 to access the side menu, though you'd still need the mouse for certain interactions. As for the characters, the Turkish dude is actually the easiest to play since he does trading which isn't as complicated and way more profitable.
To save you access the Navigation menu by clickin on it (or press F4) and select Options. There you can find Save/Load.
Putting men on lookout is done by going to the Crew menu (F2), Assign Crew, select a ship and adjust the percentages there. How many crew you need depends on your ship and skill level. Also the Telescope item helps a lot in finding stuff on the overworld.

      Well first, why
second, I don't want to play SNES with a keyboard, my only other option is a DualShock 4 (icky for nintendo games) and a switch pro controller.

The DualShock is just a modified snes controller

SNES version is visually better in some ways.

      >in some ways

      In all ways

Yeah I tried the SNES version
my takeaway is that the SNES version is less sim heavy and scaled back graphics wise, because these DOS graphics are SOULFUL. I think yeah it would prolly be way easier and user friendly to play the SNES version but from what I'm seeing I kind of like the graphics and music way more in the DOS version.
I'd much rather have detailed portraits and cut scenes as opposed to what I've seen the SNES do.

      >ran out of food
Trade, my friend. That's how you get money (well you can attack other fleets but it's dangerous). The Turkey guy is the only character that rely on Trade Fame. Don't give up and keep experimenting with the games. I had lots of game over when I played this game for the first time. But I had played the prequel so it's not that new for me. I choose Joao of Portugal as my first play because his dad is the one and only main character of the prequel.

      oh I'll keep trying.

        >prefer DOS version
I grew up playing Koei games in PC. I never touch the console versions.

Ended up losing because I ran out of food trying to get to syracuse to deliver a letter.
Think I'm gonna play the Turkish guy, he seems chill.
I'm thinking about switching to snes version as well.

You can remodel ships to have less cabins for the crew but more cargo space, which I'd recommend doing early to trade and build up some money before going for discoveries.

According to the wiki, you can buy cats in Mecca, Zeiton, Nagasaki and Sakai. SInce you're near Japan, and Sakai and Nagasaki are not available yet because of story, you can buy it in Zeiton (China).

Eh I'd just work my way around Africa like usual. Also made me realize that Ernst starts with really high navigation skill, making certain early "easy and fast" ships pointless as you'll be sailing smooth with anything.
