New Horizons is one of my all-time favorites. Have played through many times. That game even got my mom into playing RPGs kek.
How can there be so many awful games in this series? The frick happened? Are there any good sequels that were actually translated? I'd love to play another game like this but it just hasn't been made.
SNES Uncharted Waters was a SlowROM game. Civilization was FastROM though. It seems most of Koei's SNES games were FastROM but UW was an early one from 1991.

I mean even with FastRom they were slower than Genesis counterparts. Just compare Nobunaga's Ambition on the two platforms. Snes guys really got shafted in this aspect.

I'm still playing the Genesis version and am an expert on it!
The Sega Genesis version is seriously better and the menu is transparent while it's opaque on the SNES (so you can't see your prefectures behind it when making selections).
The colors on the SNES in comparison aren't noticeably better either.
Many games have additional graphical effects on the SNES and look better than the Genesis version but this isn't one of them.

Regardless, Nobunaga's Ambition is just a fun strategy/empire game that I can play without the tediousness of the later games in the series. The Sega Genesis version is great compared to NES (amazing that it even has it) and SNES (missing transparencies and speed issue).
I'm glad that Koei would push out these games for us to play.
It wasn't too hard to port these because Koei used a custom scripting engine for their games. If they'd had to sit down and write a MD port from scratch in assembly language I doubt they would have attempted it.
with the DOS version, choosing to not use the mouse actually makes it feel better to play.
talking about the first game, it's better in terms of trading (before you know the tricks), ship customization, and the stage's the world instead of just the Caribbean. but battles are more simplistic. oh and you also don't need to regularly divvy your loot, unlike most pirate games.
the second game (New Horizons) is a totally different beast and I'd say it's a must play. though I'd recommend playing the SNES version because while DOS has better graphics and music, the controls are horrendous.
some people still buy Sega marketing propaganda from 1992 as fact. the SNES CPU was clocked at 3Mhz but since it had much higher IPS the real speed was actually very close to the Mega Drive's 7.16Mhz. some SNES games especially early ones used SlowROM which limited the CPU to 2Mhz. this awkward setup was done because mask ROMs capable of being accessed at the CPU's full speed weren't cheap or widely available when the console was designed. basically SlowROM games used a mask ROM with a slower access time and added a bunch of wait states to the CPU while FastROM ran at full speed.

Otto is my fav
this is the Mega Drive version? that feels so wrong. the MD is for Batman going around beating people up, not weeb strategy games.
>weeb strategy games
alright, junior. here's your (you).
now shut the frick up and go back to Ganker.
neither weebish nor a strategy game
maybe not but still you don't tend to associate the console with slow paced games like this. they always did seem like more of a SNES thing.
Fair, and I concede to your point, sir.
the SNES had more RAM and controller buttons which was beneficial for strategy titles
Koei also did SNES port of Civilization. That was ass mainly because the AI took absolutely fricking forever to go through its turn.
Well CPU was also important because
. The Genesis ports of Koei games fare noticeably better in terms of load times.

i had to laugh at the Mexican Runner's video comment for his playthrough of NES UW
>as you may know Koei makes really long games that a lot of NES Mania viewers don't like watching
the 16-bit versions of this game are a lot better than the NES especially the music is much more pleasant on the ears

Redpill me on this.
is it better than Sid Meier's Pirates?

Not better, not worse. But totally worth playing.
Better in every conceivable way.
they had Pirates! on NES and Mega Drive (well, really Pirates! Gold) if you're into that. UW has twice the scale and content of Pirates! though.
>NES Pirates!
>256k ROM
>UW
>768k ROM
Totes.
Second game is way better than Pirates.

being able to sail around the world was a pretty impressive scope
Has anyone here ever got 3 or 4 to work?
No, but 3 looks great and has historical figures in it with a banging soundtrack.
Goddamn I wish there was a translation.
Agreed on both counts. Much deeper and more engaging than Pirates, albeit not as aesthetically pleasing.
The graphics are all botched, but you can engage in land battles in 3
UW is a newer game than Pirates!, by three years. Game design was evolving quickly back then.
new horizons is one of the best games ever made.
Agreed
The soundtrack by Yoko Kanno is mesmerizing.
>34:13
>38:10
Wait I thought that was the arranged track, meant it for:
the arranged soundtrack is so good. its some of her best work.

damn, the SNES version sounds really weird
That stretch of the Arctic always creeped me out as a kid with that music, nothing but ice and a single port. Barely made it the first time.
well the intro had that music playing while telling you about your father's tragedy, so it always is an unnerving piece.
I like the supply port music
NTA but agreed, it sounds lonely and lost.
bamp
It's interesting how a few of the computer ports of the 1st Uncharted Waters have voice acting
