this is the biggest reason i quit my dominating knight build. when i got the claymore and realized it was both not a two handed weapon, but also looked like a machete, i couldn't go on much longer. that, and swords are a fricking nightmare on DOM.

I honestly can't imagine most Underrail fans caring about Souls games.

There can't be much overlap between oldschool TB WRPG boomers and whoever the frick plays those meme console JRPGs. Huge generation gap, at least.

I like both. That said, how much I like the Souls games has been decreasing in release order, Elden Ring was okay enough to play it but I have no interest in replaying it.

So what new shit was added recently aside from that chainsword? I might have to do ANOTHER playthrough or at least just plot out a build progression in my head and never play the game.
frick I still haven't done the lemurian spear build.

souls games are some of my favorites. You're right that there really isn't much of an overlap in terms of the content, but many people just end up liking a variety of games. Also I wouldn't say souls games are jrpg-y.

I bet you play bleed builds in Souls games, 100%

Not him, but I long time ago, like more than a year ago, I made an agile, psiless lightweight SS nimble can swordman with bleed stack, long before the SS purification data thingies.
Going to play devil's advocate for a moment: Swords do not miss more than any other melee, it's merely the fact that every sword miss is way more noticiable since every swing HAS to land or you lose your momentum, on top of Flurry being, what? 3 swings with 1 attack? 5% Chance to miss starts to look not so irrelevant when you are swinging dozens of times but only takes 1 miss to get you killed, eventually it will happen, and you have to rely on a plan B to get out alive. Which is why our local swordgay uses TM as a crutch :v)

Many times I have noticed, that I'd take adrenaline, land an expose weakness then swing with a Super Slam on a weak but dangerours enemy... Miss. at 95% chance to hit. Inmediadly follow with a Pummel. It lands and crits, killing the enemy.
Or when playing my psiless STR barefist monk, you'd think that above 90% CtH you'd hit pretty much punch, but you will kinda miss often, more noticiable on a Combo third punch.
Swords feel like shit because it's an 'all or nothing' type of weapon in a game that, unless you use psi, RNG will eventually frick you over, and if you dont have a backup plan for that you will fricking die.

The souls games don't appeal to me in terms of either gameplay nor aesthetic. I have dragons dogma, which at least has a sort of skyrim thing going on with its world roaming and looting, but the combat is just repetitive and cartoony. Then there's the autistic capcom dialogue and story. No thanks; I'll stick to my god-tier oldschool iso-rpgs.

Combat utilities are a tough question in Underrail's balance because of how powerful they are, to the point where it's a badge of honor to not use them (like in sheepherder's builds).
At the same time, you can't just nerf them into the ground because they are necessary to soften the edges of a non-optimized build, or for some of the hardest encounters.
I like the way crossbows do it. They aren't that strong on paper but you build them up with a roll call of game mechanics (perks, traps, stealth, utilities, crafting) until they become a force to be reckoned with. It takes away a lot of the feeling of being a crutch that I think a lot of people get from grenades.

sheep abuses the shit out of TM and SI/crit chance though
        also metas like a mofo

Strife, as you can see in basically all of the screenshots, just uses flashbangs, nets, and a taser. All three mainly just for getting 95% for flurries, but obviously flashbangs are a get out of jail card as well.

it is DOM, yeah. has been fun and satisfying, though there was a brief time where i was using very shitty armor and it was a bit of suffering. grabbed some hypercerebrix and crafted top quality shit, now it's easy street to 30 while I kill everything in the game. I was right at 24 when I took that screenshot, something like this:
                https://underrail.info/build/?GAkFBgoKAwPCggAAAAAAS1pQAADCgsKCFFFUAAAAAABhe2M5wrAmwpbCjzsIVR8VwpgOUOKzrATit7AF378

going for intimidation now since I don't need crafting skills anymore, and I may as well pick up Yell as I reach godhood.

                Interesting, looks good.
A while back I tried shotty build on DOM and went for lighter armor type to have more movement. My biggest issue was that I thought I needed to max PER (lets say 16?) and having no leading shot.

hmm low int not hurting your crafting? But for the rest this is a really good take for heavy armor type of guy.

                Anonymous

i have been interested in trying out a mobile shotty build, but I find sprint to be enough mobility. you really want to be tanky since you need to be close, and be in a position to hit multiple enemies or funnel them. i have also made the mistake of no leading shot before and deleted that character. it's truly a mandatory shotgun feat unless you enjoy having a shitty time or use grenadier to carry your build. low INT certainly delayed the best gear, but often crafting the best items in the game super early makes me get bored and lose interest sooner.

                Anonymous

I see. I guess the greater mobility allows you to move behind objects while reloading or after AP used up, for longer periods of time. But if face tanking with that build instead gives the same result, well I works too. It's just been too long since I've played since all the changes to know what works or not....

Btw, no survival instincts? Or too risky with hanging round too low HP.

for the most part the feats were taken in the order this build outlines. gassed the dronetards, went with JKK for my wife Vivian and easier time getting my house for crafting benches. full tungsten tank with sprint; tungsten reinforced boots, tungsten visor helm for flashbanging my feet. shell strap belt.

If its your first time ever playing, hard oddity is fine
but you could do dom; its not *that* hard even for newbies, they'll just have to apply themselves
it would be hard at first since no stealth and low throwing and initiative, but once you got past the 2nd mission it would be downhill from there

The game is intriguing. The psy build was pulling me in because of System shock 2 memories.

But the game feels so moody with its presentation that I want a stoic Jin Roh type guy that is mostly just exploring this sunless sea type setting in silence and drugged out of his mind with hypos.

you might get your shit pushed in in the early game on hard and get discouraged

you mean so he gets bored and restarts on a more fun and challenging difficulty. restartitis is pretty much the name of the game and I don't feel like a minority admitting I played through the game up to DC at least 4 times before I found a build I loved and beat the final boss with it. new players should start on normal, period.

On April 1st I encountered a woman named April in foundry, although I think you can find her in other places. She was talking about how her brother sold some crossbow and that she was trying to find it, but don't quote on me that. I don't remember anything besides that.

          >but will is stealing a bit from other attributes
I find that Will eventually pays off itself with not only Stoicism, but feats like Iron Will and Fight Response as well, though yeah I agree for the most part it takes a while for Stoicism (and by extension Will) to really take off, but AR Tin Cans aren't exactly starved for points like say, Punchgays.

Stoicism, specially if fully spec'd is REALLY good, is probably THE BEST tank oriented feat in this game, also with conditioning, allow you to actually make good use of Survival Instincts without cheesing it (if you have regen best), on top of everything else the previous anon say, Iron Will also will let you survive a little bit more against TC shenanigans

I dont have expeditions but I see its only 3 levels more.

last stand seems a must for both Survival Instincts conditioning and stoicism.

              Anonymous

Yes, but you have to fully spec Last Stand duration to be good, if you wont then LS is not worth it

expidition is 25-30 and unlocks the ability to spec into feats
that being said iron will doesn't do a whole lot without expedition as the enemies it is useful against are pretty rare unless you piss off the faceless

The intended way is indeed normal since the buff to players health is to compensate the fact its usually a mob of enemies against a single player.
If the game had companions hard would be normal.
That said its more of a balancing issue with builds.

I guess, but the game is fricking starving for skill points.

I gave the game an honest try but it is tedious in the most boring ways possible.
Nothing to do with difficulty, game is ridiculously easy once you understand how broken some things are (grenades and traps) but it's just tedious to the point I roll my eyes at shit constantly. Too bad because I really like how the game does a lot of stuff, but the combat just fricking sucks.

Maybe the game is just not all that interesting because of my build, I mean I have 50 hours and most of the gameplay was crafting god frags, traps, making one enemy stuck in a corridor and clearing 5 enemies at once with a frag. Not the most engaging gameplay, so maybe it's my own fault. Is a gun build more engaging?
Also I locked myself out of a quest by pure accident and that annoyed me but I expected this game doing stuff like that so yeah.
I'm also heavily disappointed in the stealth system. I thought it would be more interesting than this but it really feels underwhelming. A lot of things in the game feel a bit underwhelming honestly.
I also went into this game blind, I got lucky that the shit I like doing in RPGs happens to be a god build here, I probably would have gotten buttfricked with anything else.

          Anonymous

Nothing is engaging, you kill the enemies. Its just that traps and gas, and caltraops all are too slow when you could just generally win most fights with a high crit build.

            Anonymous

Eh maybe it's just not the game for me then. I was expecting a more interesting game especially from a combat centric RPG but it just feels lacking in that department. Really like the setting, how the exploration plays out and the crafting is super good, sad the combat is just boring.
I also don't get it, I joined protectorate, I was expecting quests where I get to fight with fellow protectorate soldiers and instead I got dumb fetch quests where I am sent alone. I don't get it, it's not like the game is not able to handle friendly units, it just never does it. My favorite parts of the game so far have been when people fight with you because it creates interesting combat scenarios (especially with grenades, you don't want to kill your teammates with those) but the game purposefully never does it in favor of having you fight an entire army by yourself. Missed opportunities everywhere.

              >I don't get it, it's not like the game is not able to handle friendly units
Uhhh that's one of the worst parts about the game, you throw fire on the ground, instead of walking around it they walk through it then unanimously aggro you like you directly attacked them and ignore the enemies.

How deep do stealth systems get? I'm interested in recommendations especially for RPGs.

I haven't played many games with good stealth mechanics, only good stealthy stuff I've played is in tabletop rpgs and even then in a lot of games it really sucks (dnd kinda plays like a circus).
I mean when I specced into stealth I was expecting things like surprise attacks, additional buffs for initiating combat out of stealth or surprising enemies by having the drop of them, fricking around with enemies by making them move somewhere on purpose (you can do it in this game but attracting enemies with shit grenades then restealthing kinda breaks the thing I was going for), having stealth-only abilities, you know, shit like that. Instead in this game, stealth just means I don't initiate combat instantly and I move slower, which is kind of a wienerblock.
I was told it's the same for hacking, where you think by speccing into that you'll be able to frick with turrets, making them fight for you, perhaps crafting shit you see in the game (being able to craft kamikaze bots would have been so fun) but instead it's limited to a few areas and it's for loot.
I just find this game has all these features and not a lot of them are fully fleshed out in scenarios where it actually matters, it's frustrating.

            >I don't get it, it's not like the game is not able to handle friendly units
Uhhh that's one of the worst parts about the game, you throw fire on the ground, instead of walking around it they walk through it then unanimously aggro you like you directly attacked them and ignore the enemies.

I wasn't using molotovs so I didn't run into issues like that, I just wish these sections were better crafted and that there were more of them. I literally joined protectorate because I thought it was cool I would join squads to do cool shit around the world, but it sucked instead.

              >tabletop rpgs
Oh true see I wouldn't have thought about that I never play them.
That's actually a really good point, I can only think of a couple feats that give you stuff to do out of stealth and it's just a damage buff and a special attack. Being able to inflict a status effect or something seems natural.

                Anonymous

Yeah and since the game has the philosophy of enemies being able to do everything you do to them, it could also apply to enemies that like to stealth on you. It'd definitely make it more scary if an enemy could inflict you a debuff making you have less AP or something like that when they are the one initiating combat out of stealth. It makes perception that much important, it's super engaging as well. Like I said, just little things like that would make the combat that much more interesting.

                Anonymous

are you really complaining that there aren't any scary stealthed enemies in underrail?

                Anonymous

I know death stalkers are a thing, and some enemies with stealth can kind of frick you up as well if they incapacitate you. It doesn't make the system interesting. That's the problem with this game, combat just does not have the nuance I was looking for, and that applies to a lot of mechanics, ideas, skills, feats. If the name of the game is a combat centric RPG then I really want these kinds of little things I mentioned to give me a reason to approach things a certain way instead of trapping people and nadding them to death. The literal only thing stopping you from doing that in this game is damage thresholds and resistances, but it's again more of a wienerblock solution rather than interesting game design.
Maybe I was waiting too much out of this game, it was hyped to me a lot, and I think the praises are deserved for a lot of things that are not combat related.

I said it earlier, I ran into this game blind, told myself stealth+traps+throwing knives would be fun, I ran into faceless enemies and realized damage thresholds and resistances were a thing, so I did the next best thing by replacing throwing knives by grenades, I have kind of breezed through most sections in the game without much strategy.

I have something very similar in a notepad file so I don't have to write out everything when I do the puzzle again.
You can copy and paste the cipher text and octave keys if you didn't know.

        Anonymous

I just use the online solver, but I wanted to try my hand at solving the puzzle at least once.

          Anonymous

Ah right, I didn't even know there was a solver. The first time is the only bad time though, you're just going through the motions after that. If I get lucky with the cipher I can do it in about 5 minutes anyway.

            Anonymous

You can do it very quickly if you look for the numbers directly, just take note of the numbers that are 1 over the third octave's number. It's most likely they belong to the code's numbers. You can brute force tue numbers that are spelled with letters.
In my cypher I should've looked for the number 1's in the key

So I've been thinking. What would happen to Psychosis if it was changed so that only the abilities that can crit had the increased psi cost?
The way it stands, when you're outside of Tranquility's use case (health missing), it's just a non-factor. When you're outside of Psychosis' use case (using utility spells), you're eating a fairly bad cost penalty for no benefit.
Maybe the real moral of the story is that Tranquility is too good. Nobody tell Styg.

      Anonymous

Or make it so that all psi abilities can crit, fear/rage effects last twice as long, LTI reduces cooldowns by 2 turns, contraction gives an extra 10 AP and 15 MP, etc.

        Anonymous

...that's a good point. Mental Breakdown already does that with offensive TC abilities.

        Anonymous

More savescumming. People will reroll for crit haste even with a 5% chance.

      Anonymous

It would be a buff to Psychosis I'd like, but Tranquility is the one that needs a buff. Generally, Tranquility is only better for Electrokinesis since you have Psychostatic Electricity for crit chance already, TC status effects (which already have high AP cost and cooldown so Tranquility is barely a bonus anyway), and TM since none of it can crit. Psychosis is better for literally everything else that deals damage, Neural Overload with Mania and LoC is your bread and butter for the entire game, Cryo Orb is also insane with Mania, 65% crit chance Plasma Beams are nuts.

I don't remember if I ever announced this here, but you can target enemies beyond the vision range by right-clicking them to bring up their portrait, moving away, choosing your attack, then left-clicking their portrait before it disappears. You need to be snappy though. Spears can have a range of up to 15 tiles, while vision range is 14 tiles.

just play on normal, don't follow any build guides. there's a variety of weapons, but when you are making your character you should stick to one type(e.g., pistol build, shotgun build, knife build, etc). trying to spread between multiple weapon types or melee/ranged can leave your starved for skill points and feats. you can look through the feat list when starting and see what feats go with what weapon types, and stat requirements for them. ensure you are maxing one combat skill. mercantile is helpful, crafting is powerful but not needed, even on the hardest difficulties. basic grenades and traps do not require any skill point investment and are very powerful. main questions to ask yourself are: main weapon? magic(psi) or not? tanky or fast?

Yes, multi school psi is still viable on Normal. I would recommend you specialize if you plan to play on harder difficulties

Perk selection being spread too thin can slow you down in early game. Even if you do go with a multi-school approach, have some idea of which school is your primary damage dealer and focus the perks on that.

          Anonymous

My monk had 5 ap punches, that required 9 DEX, tabis and lightning punched, on top of 8 agility, i dumped the rest on STR.
BTW the str damage bonus for barefist is multiplicative, not additive

And up to you, my barefist monk had 5 CON, still pretty squishy since i also wore the Ratto Fursuit

Use the vertical chart. Find the AP of the weapon on the left (10), then find when the AP of the weapon changes as Dex increases. Bare fists should be 9/12 Dex for 5/4 AP punches.

      Anonymous

regen vest, and psi hypos im not a macechud, try discord

      Anonymous

Fast metabolism will always be useful while Doctor will not
You cannot bandage yourself in combat, but you can use things like hypos, use regen mixtures, get healed by your regen vest, marsh honey, etc; Doctor will allow you to always be able to bandage yourself and increase heal recieved, but only out of combat, arguably the moment where you need healing the most as a tank/tin can.
Also, metabolism increases psi booster psi gain, and increases the healing of all healing sources, including the ones I mentioned.

Like I said before, Doctor is not bad by all means, at worst is QoL and at best is situational, like an anon pointed out you can bandage yourself when crawlers sting you and disengage from combat, allowing to bandage yourself, but thats a relatively fringe situation compared to the rest of combats in the game.

          Anonymous

looks like I saved over the chempistol build i had in the editor, oops. but it was memey and kinda janky and highly unoptimized anyway, as I wanted to use some specific gear with intimidation bonuses.

anyway i'd probs start the build with something like this in mind: https://underrail.info/build/?HgMQBQUDAwdGKADCoB4AeFAyMgAAAGQAAAAAAMKgAABLK2EmwpFWThHCs9-_
skipping versatility and going more perception is perfectly fine too. the only things you really need are cooked shot, mad chemist and enough chemistry to craft the guns. opportunist and sure step are excellent too.
as you can see, there's room to fiddle with, going all the way up to 18 dex isn't mandatory either. just fill in the rest with whatever feels good. escape artist is not strictly necessary, but it's very nice for QoL.
also temporal manipulation can be left at 70 or skipped, but psi is powerful and TM has the best spells that don't scale much with skill so willpower at 3 is fine.

          Anonymous

          You could try this: https://underrail.info/build/?CgUMAwkDAwcjHgA8AAA8MjIAAB4APAAFAAAAMgAAMibCoytiFlbCkTrfvw
You should also balance the crafting a bit better depending on what you can find, a few points in Biology are needed in order to craft focus stims later on. Mercantile is pretty essential on a chem pistols build because not many vendors sell the parts, so you need it in order to access their higher quality equipment. Grenadier is a great feat with your high chemistry because you can craft very powerful grenades early, but you can substitute it for something else and put those points in throwing somewhere else.

It actually has many variants because you only need 9 Str for Tungsten armor, and Burst is fine with sub-max Perception. CON variant just seems best for a first run.
          Head: Night Vision Seeker Goggles
Chest: Tungsten Steel Armor (Regenerative Vest, x3 Tungsten plate reinforcement)
Boots: Tungsten Steel Boots (Tungsten Plate Reinforcement, High Density Padding)
          Belt: Bullet Strap Belt
Main Gun: 7.62mm Hornet (Rapid Reloader, Muzzle Brake)

I've done no-psi spear on Dominating. Its really just a delivery system for your armor. I ended the game with TiChrome, Super Steel, Tungsten, CAU, Stealth, Crit, and movement armor.
That stat spread is basically what you do for a standard Spear build, but if you want nimble can you cut 1 STR for 1 INT. If you don't have TM, then I think you need Sprint, I wouldn't go Agi just for Sweep anymore. Don't do Juggernaut until right before you craft your metal armor. Don't skip Grenadier.

      classic is more
oddity means you loot items that give xp
classic means you get xp for kills and quests always
oddity intentionally limits how much xp you can gain from certain enemies/areas (a dog might drop a collar oddity, but only the first 3 collars give xp)
      classic doesn't

But bugs have to eat something too. In the end, the food chain requires sunlight in one way or another. I think some mystical thing present in the caves around which plants grow would have been a decent explanation. Like photosynthesis but using some kind of psi fields rather than light. And artificial hydroponics for normal surface plants.

Its possible animals that have adapted to radiation are topside and some animal that eats them rests inside the entrance of the tunnels and contributes to the food chain like that.

I think some large artificial contraption that puts nutrients (derived from engineered life that thrives on the surface, probably algae or something) in the water that flows down into the caves would make a decent bit of sense. You'd just have to filter the water for drinking, and everything would smell like a swamp.

It's generally understood that the Utility Tower hints the surface is a frozen wasteland, as the higher up you go, the more frigid it gets. That would explain why there's no hints of people exploring the surface, they would freeze to death.

                > In the end, the food chain requires sunlight in one way or another.
Nope. It requires autotrophy (accumulation of ambient energy into chemical bonds of organic compounds). It can be thermal energy, energy of non-organic chemical fuels, nuclear energy, etc.

There are sunlight-independent ecosystems right now on IRL Earth.

And the entire Underrail was explicitly built by megacorporations that explicitly did genetic engineering and ecosystem creation.

And one of the genetically engineered creatures that gets an spotlight in one the larger quests is EXPLICITLY A LITOVORE.

What people never bring up for some reason is that oddity will dictate what areas you go to if you want to level up due to oddities repeating a lot in some places and you can only pick up a limited amount of the same. With classic you can go anywere as long as enemies aren't filtering you.

              You are missing the point.
Oddity locks you on a set path if you want to level up (and you really want that since some builds only work from level 18 and up), while it doesn't matter on classic and you can go any direction without missing out on xp.

                Anonymous

That isn't true. Every area has its own oddities and its own sidequests so you can get experience anywhere. Except the caves, which are shit.

                Again

                >This is your brain on pure metagame.
Because you build your entire game experience on maximizing level progression, all so that you can I dunno use BT to kill a room fool of enemies like 5 times (15 if you choose to genocide the natives in Expedition) after leaving half the game content behind you, at which point you have nothing else to do (as combat is limited in DC, and Tchort's Eye fricks up our precious stats), so the only thing you have left is being autistic in an Underrail thread on a Sri-Lankan political dissent forum.

Why are you doing this? Underrail is straight up bad for this shit - the encounters are limited, the builds aren't that varied, and you have to play on a specific difficulty, with a specific Xp system that even the dev and most players agree to be shit, in a specific and entirely counter-intuitive way, just to do this pointless shit you are doing. Go play Pathfinder or Dragon's Dogma for infinite build autism instead.

Even if you can't, just stop aggressively shilling your cancerous play-style as "the only proper way to play the game" everywhere. Go to an Elden Ring thread on /vg/ and express your disdain for people who don't appreciate your specific way of numbers interacting with other numbers there.

They'll be expensive at the beginning (as is everything) but you'll fairly rapidly get enough money from stealing and looting that it'll work out.
These are some things you'll find useful and cheap:

          throwing nets
          bear traps
          caltrops

Bear traps are for pre-combat preparation without a certain feat, while caltrops and nets work as combat utilities. In general, one-time-use items are much more effective in this game than the useless trash they usually are in other RPGs.

Doesn't ignore sloping's reduction. Nimble/BWT work because they lower your overall penalty, and that's not what juggernaut checks. Instead it checks to see if your chest armour (and only chest, helmet/boots are ignored) has 50% penalty or higher. Since sloping does change that specific value it might ruin it.

    >chainsword
I'd considered getting Underrail but I suppose I really should get it now.

  72. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I'm using the chainsword as my main, and centered my build around it. I went for a tungsten tank build, so I'm also using proxy punches to catch up to enemies, but almost all my kills are done with the chainsaw.

You're probably much better off building a nimble can with this weapon, all things considered, but i figured that going all-in on strength was going to be my best bet. There are some advantages to tungsten tanking, however, in that you only chainsaw as much as you have AP or battery power. It could prevent some overkill (and this battery drain), and for small fry hitting them four times is enough. I decided to stack strength for more damage on the sword per tick, though a crit build might work out even better. Hard to say, i took consistent damage.

For the sword itself, it's got some very solid advantages, the biggest of which being that all ten ticks of damage on the chainsaw attack trigger the blades or spikes on metal armor. My current guess is that I'd be best off attaching one blade for taste for blood stacks, and add about 30-50 damage with double spikes per tick.
Another advantage is that the sword deals really high crit damage, at 150% base. combine with cheap shots and critical power and you've got really powerful crits, and you're hitting your targets ten times. Focus shots do wonders.

Another thing: due to the nature of phreaks quest, you can get this thing early and with almost no combat. You'll have to cheese the spiders with the automatic doors, but after that you're in business. The industrial bots guarding the blade you can kill with the electricity shit you had to activate to open it up. So you can nab this as soon as you reach core city.

All in all, it's not as shit as it appears at first glance, but you need to essentially build your character around it.
I don't even have flurry, because this fricking this has a minus 5 on Precision. Don't build for swords, build for a chainsaw.

very interesting, anon. does fancy footwork apply for each chainsaw hit? perhaps very nimble with fancy footwork could work

        Anonymous

If the armor works, I'm guessing every hit is counted seperately. So fancy footwork probably just gives you back your entire movement.
Tungsten tank needs to be backed by psi to help you catch enemies, but a nimble can can probably run for days.

        Couple of addendums:
You also get a 50% armor piercing on the chainsaw attack, which makes up for the 30 percent damage debuff on a hit per hit basis. Not having to rely on flurry and instantly dying over a single miss also makes it less frustrating, I'd say.
I was able to kill burrower warriors in two turns basically as soon as I had the chainsword, albeit with some crits.

You also want to have a knife or similar low AP backup to expose weaknesses with, or to just finish off enemies with a sliver of health. The chainblade is really bad as a regular sword, being inaccurate and costing 20 AP per swing, so you want something on the side. I've been using a knife, but a fist is probably better, come to think of it

but build dedicated to throwing knifes must be pretty bad, right? I doubt I'll be able to clear Depot A with only knifes and nades, especially since mutants are immune to bio damage.

fairly easy actually cause you just rush for MKlVs
          >mutant are resistant to acid not bio so burrower caltrops and cave ear knives work great, they are resistant to gas granades though for the most part

            mutants have 100% bio resistance
            but poisons bypass that

              Anonymous

I know, the only thing is poison is bio damage but the game does a bad job distinguishing that and gas. From what I gathered gas is the only "bio" damage that's different since all other are ones are poisons or the ones in DC that's basically poison but in gas form.
              >cave ear poison still works with all of them though besides the enemies who can resist it

                Anonymous

theres bio and theres poison; poisons are generally attached to other damage
like, a crawler stings you and then you are poisoned, but if it dealt no damage then you dont get poisoned; something had to get through your armor and your skin to inject the poison, bio resistance from armor does not protect against that
bio damages applied from outside, like gas, are
there are a few outside bio damages, heartbreakers, creepers, locusts, sowers, gas
a mutant could prance through a pack of heartbreakers and never get damaged

Not really, but problem are heavily armored robots, you gotta need expose weakness for those

        Anonymous

Biggest thing is to get enemies past that 25% (about 35% when speced) damage range to get gureenteed crits for fatal throw on armored enemies. Most granades and traps should do that job. You also want max remote surgeon as soon as possible to still do damage with throwing knives.

rushing the chainsword...is there really not a shortcut to phreak's room after getting there? my level 10 ass has to get by all these fricking spiders every god damn time? also, can I talk to the acid hunters, or do they need to die? i doubt I can kill them right now.

      Anonymous

You can just take the ladder west of phreaks specific hidey-hole and you can climb back the same way once your character knows it's there. The spiders only need to be dealt with once, and those doors make it piss easy. Gas grenade them, and move in to stab the closest spider to keep aggro when the door automatically opens. Remember to close it, of course.

The Acid hunters can be let go with no trouble. Not even a speech check involved, you just tell them to frick off.

The phone puzzle does force you into a relatively difficult fight with some bandits when you need to actually enter the secret space, but they check out explosions, so sneaking past isn't that hard.

The final hurdle is the double industrial bots + sentry bot. Bring some grenades, toss them close to lure the crawlers over to the bots so you don't need to deal with that shit. Use emp to make some distance and hopefully lure the bots onto the electricity frickzone, or just lock them out of the room, as I'm pretty sure industrial bots can't open doors.

Obviously, you're going to need a shield to take a few flamethrower hits from the bots. Toss a gas grenade at mordre, he'll drop a fantastic quality knife and a decent shield.

any pro tips for a first timer doing the sound puzzle for phreak? im also a PERlet so i dont have that to help me. guessing ill need to get audacity open.

      Anonymous

No two of the sounds are equal pitch, so you can order them all from highest to lowest. Listen to them without a sequence loaded and write down the order using symbols or short words. When you hear the sequence, write out where each sound seems in pitch compared to the others. Line this up with you order and go back to double check note you hear to see which it's closest to (for the button that doesnt play use process of elimination). The buttons for each sound dont change from phone to phone so eventually you should develop an innate grasp of which button is which sound.

      Anonymous

I've recorded a reference track of all the sounds in sequence and then recorded the puzzle sounds and went through them comparing with the reference.

      Anonymous

alright, so first you grab a pen and paper
listen to each of the six tones/notes, then organize them from high to low or vice versa; however you think they'd fall on a scale
write down the color/icon associated with them (yellow, rat, cross, etc)
listen to them until you have a mental "picture" of what "yellow" sounds like, etc
then after that add a description of what that note sounds like
attach the orange phone thing, listen to the sequence
focus just on the first note, think real hard about which one it is; the following notes can help you place it on the scale
you can also play around on the orange phone itself without exiting the current sequence; you can test some of the sounds (some wont work), then jump back into the sequence
write down the first note when you think you got it, then listen to the sequence again and again, focusing on each next note in particular, until you are sure you have all six or seven correct (sometimes its 7 notes)
I write them down in order before I enter the sequence
you have to do three sequences in a row without fail

I forgot to say that you can replay a sequence as much as you need, you just can't exit
and you can check notes on the orange phone while working on a sequence; it doesnt "exit" you out

      my notes for them are:
      yellow = ringing high note
green = electronic ringing high note, slightly lower than yellow
red cross (+) = flat ringing (sounds like the first note in that wedding music when the bride is walking down the aisle)
blue = flat electronic ringing; sounds like a string, plays longer and sounds more echo-y
      exclamation (!) = low ringing
rat = low flat bassy noise

so theres two highs, two mediums, two lows, each category has a higher version and a lower, more electronic version
at least thats how it sounds to me
(the notes and signs are randomized each playthrough; so the signs I listed probably won't match your sounds)

I just got bored because I did not play in a while and was trying out a shotgun build then I got to that part in Depot A where acid dogs and mutants just constantly pin you down and I don't know how to deal with that other than with grenades and I'm too lazy to go back and restock and it's a boring tactic anyway but there's no other way considering my build so it's boring.

Had a fantastic time exploring water treatment plant though.

      Anonymous

not that you should know if you are unfamiliar with the game, but as long as you have stealth and lockpicking(hacking helps too), you don't ever have to fight any mutants or mutant dogs. you really only have to fight some regular dogs and muties(not mutants) for some keys. shotguns start out a bit rough, and if you don't have leading shot you might as well restart

        Anonymous

Yeah it's just that I really dislike playing anything stealthy in Underrail. And I abhor psykers in any sort of a sci-fi setting so I never even tried a psi build. In terms of pacing, I always thought that Underrail was a horrific slog every time you went out of the dungeon and into the disjointed cities. Each time I restarted to try a melee build or something crossbow or knife based I had to ride the elevators or capture fricking cave hoppers for Big Black person and the Junktown itself is just a shitty area that takes ages to go through when running errands. In fact Depot A would be kinda fun if they did not put the two things I hate most about RPG enemies - stunlock and acid baths into one huge bundle of joy. I'm probably a shitty player but I can breeze through Depot A with explosives/molotovs and that perk that reduces cooldown.

Ok so if I go for the pistol (chem pistol preferably) build with some stealth thrown in for good measure with grenades to get me out of tight spots, the problem is - and I want to play on at least hard - how much STR do I need? If I get only 3 to max other things is the lack of armor going to frick me up?

if you are playing chem pistols, your goal is to get the CAU armor and never take it off. that said, a proper chem pistol build would completely dump STR.

I do wonder how random uniques work. I know they can sometimes spawn as loot, so does that mean the game decides that at the start of the game so they can never show up in shops if that happens? Does the opposite work so one could be assigned to one specific shop at the start of the game and never show up anywhere else? If that's the case does that mean one could be placed in a faction specific merchant's inventory? Could you be hunting for one for ages without knowing that it's impossible because you joined the wrong faction?
I have many questions and no answers.

You can keep engaging both of them in conversation, each time you do it will reset their disarm meter.

kevlar clavas are great in the early game, blast/antithermic/black are situational and depend on your build but at least they are nice basically-free bonuses

I just took high technicalities while having 7 INT. Perhaps I fricked up.

Anyway at this moment I'm in depot A and juggling both standard, chem and energy pistols. Maybe I'm spreading myself too thin.

      Discobulus for my throwing knifer
Charles Martel for my stoic psiless tungsten tank hammergay

Holy shit my first build was called Ljubo Mauzer too lmao, he was a shotgun trenchcoat psi guy, because when I started the game I knew literally nothing about how it worked, but it turned out OK.

Can I play through the base game without Expedition and then get the expansion to play afterwards if I feel like it without missing anything in the base game?

The only thing you will miss is some lore, as far as I recall

        Anonymous

you'll miss a psi school, a couple weapon types, a bunch of items, the waterways/jet skis, I think some quests, and the lvl cap will be 25 instead of 30

its fine to do that, as long as you didnt want to use any of the stuff that isn't available

Cool, I'll give it a go without the expansion to see what the game is like without the extra skills.

Why is everyone saying that Depot A is a huge difficulty spike? I just finished it with relative ease and then went to that Rail town and as soon as I wander out I get random raider enemies one shotting me.

      Anonymous

      >first proper big dungeon in the game
      >introduces enemies using an entirely new damage type you are most likely not prepared to resist at that point
      >mutants have both high HP and damage, lower your hit chance with yell, acid spray can't miss and has high 1-shot potential
      >mutated dogs can immobilize you, normal dogs are annoying because they are hard to hit and take your AP away with tackle
      >muties are usually quite big groups with dog support
But most importantly, it's a mandatory step to progress the main questline and open up the world. You're free to skip 1-shoting bandits and do something else until you're strong enough to wipe the floor with them, but Depot A is something you have to do and it's always going to be one of the more challenging things up to that point.

      Anonymous

Crafting is one of the keys to breaking the game. To a degree Styg doesn't seem to respect non-crafting enough, like certain components never spawn randomly on vendor gear even if its build critical. Its more damage, its more defense, and its exactly what you're looking for.

        Anonymous

The dumbest one is chemical pistols. Acid pistols are incredibly fricking rare, and incendiary/cryo don't even exist if you don't make them yourself.

How do I stop looting everything? I know I can't sell it, but I still take it. It's there, in the barrel, so I'll have it. Is that really so wrong? I mean, why must Styg punish that behaviour?

Is Hard mode even worth bothering with? The extra enemies made it seem fun but half healing, and double healing cooldown, is just making it tedious. If your health drops, you've lost the fight. Few battles seem to last 12 fricking turns, and 40-75 healing is less than the damage a single enemy can inflict in a single turn.

      Anonymous

its a game nothing is worth anything in a vacuum
you're struggling because you view your health as a tug of war, if you are playing properly your health is mostly static due to invalidating all incoming damage with either proper defense, shields, stuns, LoS, or your own damage

        Anonymous

I'm doing melee, so that means getting up in peoples' faces and having to take damage accordingly.
Energy shields are definitely gay as frick, but they did save my ass against the last burrower gangbang.

For an extra moan, I really wish damage wasn't so inconsistent in this game. It's bizarre going from ~15 damage hits to suddenly 140 damage just because you got a crit.

The developers already advanced fast and already got the very basic foundation of the game and models out, they all have experiencie at developing a game and it's not just Styg alone merely 'swinging' it

everything is new and being remade
its a new team with a new dynamic
            the engine is not done
the game system math is going to be overhauled
he's still trying to make dlc for this game
you need to write the things the people in the game will say
the game needs to run on people's computers without crashing

              >everything is new and being remade
Yes but it will have the same ruleset as the base game
              >its a new team with a new dynamic
And? This game started with styg as a rookie developer working all on it's own, learning as he went. Now he got a whole team of experiencied developers.
              >the engine is not done
Kinda, but Styg said he got a guy running around a map, as character test
              >the game system math is going to be overhauled
I didnt read anything about that.
              >he's still trying to make dlc for this game
He said 'MAYBE' will do a DLC, but right now his focus on Infusion
              >you need to write the things the people in the game will say
              Yeah, and?
              >the game needs to run on people's computers without crashing
Hopefully, but since now the devs know what they are doing, I hope the game crashes less.

I still give it 2 years for Infusion to at the very least get to Beta.

Aesthetically. The core of Underrail gameplay is cruel, swingy, undesigned combat where people are doing 50%-400% of each other's life totals multiple times a turn, unless you have armor which drops that down to 0%-5% damage.
