The game is definitely frontloaded with better stuff. It feels a little cheap and underbaked having the elves, furries, and angels being the master/hybrid classes instead of those being available as further promotions to other units.
Albion was by far the most disappointing region in terms of recruitable characters.
I can only assume that Josef is kept busy quietly slaughtering all of the actual unrepentant murderers that Alain recruits along the way.

I was very uncreative and put him behind a row of cavalry generics, 2 knights and a doom knight, with a druid next to him for defensive curse. Even severely underleveled and underequipped, they can roll quite a few fights in Albion.

I thought he'd be useless because of arrow weaknesses but after fighting him, he instantly got a spot on my team.
Love the design, especially the diamond shield. It's a shame I don't really care for overtly defensive units, I'd use them way more often.
I ended the game running a unit where he and Morard were on the frontline, with him using a hastened guard shield and a Holy Brooch as his only source of healing. He'd guard the first attack on Morard, maxing the latter's initiative, and then Morard would immediately berserk and then grand smash the enemy unit for huge damage. If the enemy unit started with a spell, he'd reflect it.
It was a surprisingly self-sufficient unit that had good matchups despite the only healing on the main tank being 20% per active skill use. I was really proud of that one.
That shield was practically made for him, the two pp cost doesn't mean anything when the guy can just generate two out of nowhere.
Yeah, it was really good. I'm sure there were more broken combos you could do with it, but I was disappointed when I finally benched both berserkers halfway through Bastorias because they'd die to any halfway heavy physical attack before even getting a chance to heal. So finding something that could make them work felt awesome. I did a lite version of that unit with Monica and the smaller version of that shield to do the same combo with Bruno although it didn't have wolfpack gauntlets on a backliner so it wasn't as good.
By the end I felt like just about every unit had found its place to be effective to some degree. Lex and the Swordmasters were probably the weakest things in my army. Just not a whole lot of effectiveness on them.
I used him just because he was a flier, and his dumb Buzz Lightyear voice grew on me.

Swordmaster drop hard mid game. Not even their high dodge, high crit and parry can save their class. Too much armor and health on enemies not counting shielded units, which is half of them. I made them work with Vikings Warhorn which stops Blocking and a Witch's Magic Conferral. Even with work and set up, their damage was mid.
Meteor Storm was the only thing that made me able to beat the final boss

Had Alain marry one for the RoM perks and found her pretty solid, meteor slash is a meme except against final Galarius who it ironically hard counters the frick out of but they would pick off two or three units. For armors you have the runic sword, if you're really dedicated to having that be on someone else you technically get another at the coliseum but I think they used it best for me. You see a lot of people say it's best for sainted knight, which it is, but I don't feel like they actually need it since they generally won't contribute to the damage in the interaction.

Meteor Slash is worthless outside of depleting shields. Magic Conferral is also bad on multi hit moves because its damage is just divided between each hit. Equip one of the three magic swords on your offhand slot for armors/cavalry instead. For buffs, Inspiration is the way to go with them, so you're likely going to run a hunter or yunifi in the same team and go all out with crit rate stacking.

Every time I mined for a map I would usually find one around three digs or so after. You have to use the area wide dig to reset the ground with treasures, I would build up bar fast and would find a map just about every time I did this.

They're godly support units, their only serious issue as a healer is that they have no way to cure status conditions so if you only use them for healing on a squad stuff like freeze and blind can seriously frick you up.

Alright, what was your final team for your Alain? Mine was him and and a swordmaster in the front, mix of a real and dodge tank, with a sainted knight, shaman, and viking in the back for support and debuffs. Sainted Knight healed, Shaman fricked over literally every enemy attack, and Viking set up with death spin and war horn for Alain and the sword master to finish.
Alain+Rogue on the front for tanking damage
An archer at the back for picking up squishies, scouts and flying units, and a witch to add magic damage for dealing with armor
Add a cleric for sustain

His main job is to dodge and steal pp to dodge some more. He can also poison enemies and blind them when the situation calls for it.
For what it's worth, I do use Travis but I don't think he's good. I use him with Barengaria just because bro/sis lore reasons, but I would rather replace Travis with anyone else. His entire job on the team is that he gets me more money, and on the 2nd round of combat he re-blinds stuff after the Druid blind wears off. That's all he does. Even just putting another Druid on the team would be better
If you were fighting one boss, he could potentially guard break them with his start of battle passive, then he could steal all of their AP. Theoretically. My Travis isn't doing that though
You can just equip the Armoured Gauntlets on Travis and have him use Shadowbite. That sets both an ailment and debuff at the same time and since he's inherently fast then you don't have to worry about burning accessory slots on plumes to outspeed annoying targets.
Give him binding guard and set him to use shadowbite only. He's better than shaman for me.

I've only looked at a little bit of the JP compared to ENG, but ENG is heavily edited to fit English standards in writing, as well as fantasy tropes.
Like the elves use fancy elvish for certain terminology whereas in Japanese it's just normal shit like priestess, sister, etc. Japanese dialogue in general is also much, much more simplistic. If anything looks like flowery language—which is most of this game—it's spiced up from Japanese.
If the Japanese was translated word-for-word and kept as accurate as possible, this game would get shit on for low quality writing.

I like Japanese takes on fantasy since it's a different perspective than the Western ones. If I wanted a competently written fantasy script, there's way better ones from several CRPGs that were released last year and this year. There's no point in all the re-writing that the localization team did since it can't hold a candle to the other games writing in the fantasy genre.
Can you read Japanese? Have you read the Japanese script? I compared bits of the translated script from Elfheim and it was just the usual little substance trope writing typical in Japanese these days. Like Allain's the king of short and simple sentences in Japanese.

I've been doing a footslogger run with no cavalry/rider characters. Also no conferral tomes, quick charge cheese, healing/stamina consumables, or editing a squad while it's in the field. It's not a big challenge and wasn't intended to be, but it has changed my usual squad compositions up quite a bit. Low mobility has also changed things a bit more than I expected, since the inability to take out enemy garrisons quickly leads to more enemies spawning and stamina being more of a concern.
I'm just playing without Quick Impetus. I feel like it's crutch that makes many intended counters obsolete, so not using it make the combat more fun for me.

Nope, their main issue as healers is they only handle health, they have no natural way to cure debuffs or status.

I was very surprised that in Ithilion's recruitment mission, he is both actually capable of winning fights and makes an active attempt to reach safety. That was a nice change of pace from the green units you have to save that just sit there awaiting death, or the allies that disintegrate on contact with any enemy while dealing 0 damage.

The first time I played Ridiel's mission, she appeared directly on top of an enemy and died instantly, which was pretty annoying. The cutscene where she appeared also played multiple times back to back, so for a brief moment there was an enormous number of enemies onscreen getting destroyed by 3 Ridiels.
I wish there were more than two of those. For that matter, I wish there were more hybrid magic/physical weapons with some sort of abilities in general.

Amalia is basically a big stat stick trophy and doesn't have a whole lot going on mechanically, on top of being slow as shit. She hits hard when her turn finally comes up, but I haven't found her especially useful compared to the ruby and sapphire pendants she comes with.
She was useful in fighting Gerard since everyone else was like 20 levels lower and that was good enough for me.
For general use, just stick a counter belt on her.

How do friendship stats work? Are they already added or not? For example, if Melisandre has 50 Attack, friendship in the squad gains +3 in attack, does she have 53 or is it 47 + 3 = 50?
Flatly added after defense has been subtracted, and before potencies are applied. You can think of it as just 3 extra damage.
And to clarify, rapport bonuses are never displayed and are not modified by buffs (but are modified by potencies, e.g. crit, class trait effectiveness, empowering draught, skill potency).
3 damage is 3 damage...until it's adjusted by potencies
this stat screen is just the units base stats and doesn't include stats from equipment, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't have rapport stats included either

I think it's because people aren't taking any time to think about them. A fair amount of classes get written off like that.
I just never gave them a chance really, I've got Bertrand in one of my units and he does well enough.
Lion is just a better Berserker that gets better if you run maps at night. Berserker is probably one of the weaker classes.
Owl is awkward to use.
Dinah is good.
Wolf is decent.
Bear is just a tank.
If you exclusively play at night, then they'll excel.
Well, just try them and compare with the alternatives. Wolfs work similarly to knights (row-wide damage buffs, benefits from finishing off targets, pursuits) but knights are always better. Lions are just berserkers, so they are whatever. Werebears are similar to legionnaires and while bears are better offensively, legionnaires are better at doing what they supposed to (guarding squishies). Foxes are good though — they are sidegrades to rogues with a good range of utility and better offensive abilities. And I'm not exactly sure what to make of owls. They work, they can be useful, but at the same time I've never been in a situation where I would think "huh this unit can really use an owl".
owl (my wife) is awesome to make as leader because she zooms across the map at night with feather + time changing item
