You can gift this ring to an ally in something called the Rite of Covenant in which the characters will pledge fealty to each other.
Obviously, this has similarity to marriage, but they haven't called it marriage, and they can easily play with it if they want, such as making it romantic love for some characters yet being only platonic love with other characters. Even Fire Emblem has done this in the past; not all character endings are romantic, some have just been friendship or deep loyalty.
