After you beat the level 40 fight at the top of the coliseum ladder it becomes a fight against a powered up Amalia. You can bring however many people you want, but since you only need to be awarded the win rather than outright killing her, this is much simpler than bringing a full team. She also joins you after this.
Level 30 rogue gets AP steal. And you kinda can, but the steal fails on guards and doesn't do a lot of damage. Very good at shutting down bosses though.

That kinda depends on the enemies you're facing and your units.
As a general rule of thumb, your best damage dealers that don't have some sort of chain killing/refund mechanic (like how Knights, Sellswords, Warriors,... can keep gaining AP) unless you want the extra insurance that they'll start their chain. So something along the lines of your Wizards, Witches or Gryphon Riders are decent candidates for the AP amulet.
It has two very relevant counters. Radiant knight can negate magic damage to an entire row and wereowls can quick dispel the white cat-ear hood activation, so the wizard needs two full turns to charge it and you can beat down the team that's down a lot of resources from setting up the combo. Quick dispel is also available in item form I think, I've seen a gryphon in the coliseum with that, so it's easy to slot into teams.

Any advice for making hoplites in a formation? 1 in the front and damage dealers in the back is obvious, but I was wondering if some buffs or passives actually did something good
I run a dancer's bracelet with lapis pendant on my hoplite so he contributes some to killing stuff. I also run it on a team with two people with pursuit skills and even though sting does no damage, it procs the pursuits which is worthwhile. I found the active skills that increase defense and such to be fairly useless since the enemy has already done a round of attacks by the time your hoplite moves.
if you really want to use hoplites, you probably want at least a saintly knight to protect it from magic. it will still get buttfricked by warriors though
you can try using 2x sellswords to capitalize on the hoplite getting hit. however, with this unit, you have virtually zero anti-air or anti-cav and being only decent at killing infantry is actually really bad
i honestly don't see the point of hoplites. if you want cover, alain and josef both provide some kind of cover or pseudo cover. virginia as a valkyira and some solid equipment can also cover for allies since there is a shield that gives a cover skill and another shield that gives her self healing. or you can give her white knight shield and she can both heal other people and heal herself using pp. the white knight shield will take away her hp to heal others, which will vastly increase the power of her counterattack. she also has solid damage and is a very effective anti-swordmaster/anti-scout/anti-air unit
at worst, even josef is a better frontline guard tank than a hoplite

So I just played a short amount of the demo and there's a jarring plot element that is IMO a big problem and is likely never going to be acknowledge in the plot. The Unicorn Ring can undo mind control spell, but the victim loses all memory of their time under that spell. So what happens if the victim made relationships under all that time? Got married, had children and all that stuff? In the case of Hodrick, 10 years is a long fricking time.

Self healing, a high HP pool, guard rate and his auto-guard just make him broken. Cav slayer in particular is bonkers and can basically shut down enemy cav units by itself.

I was under the impression that the NG+ difficulty has permadeath for all characters of a unit when that unit gets wiped out. Characters of a unit can still get knocked out and you can revive them as long as the entire unit doesn't get destroyed

Hoplites are pretty good vs wyverns and fliers the issue is their counters are so plentiful compared to other classes. Also I've been riding Travis (no homo) but there are certain teams where he just gets fricked and then the entire team wipes so that's a bit of a problem when it happens

It's armor. Flame is a debuff, the direct shot is still reduced by armor, and once you get some great debuff removal it's irrelevant.

Have you found any low effort ways to trigger the elf archer debuff removal? The 10% self healing on active skill brooches don't do the trick and slotting in a cleric to go out of her way to heal the archer isn't amazing when cleric can cleanse an entire row as a reaction to debuffs anyway.

Not yet, I just figured out you can Large Aid Kit into Selfless heal in the battle end to restore your squad's entire HP
But in the case of archers and debuffs on a single sturdy melee, I'm talking about Quick Cure. It cleanses and grants immunity to the next debuff.

So you can have full freedom to try whatever compositions you want with as many of a particular unit type as you want. Lots of people will probably be happy enough putting the named characters in groups work well enough that get through the story. But people interested in going deep and optimizing the strategy are going to want to be able to have squads that spam certain types.
So what exactly does Mag/Phy potency mean? If it's 50 does that mean that the attack takes 50% of the user's attack/mag stat and use that to calculate damage? Mystic Conferral + Meteor slash sounds amazing.
Damage = (Attack Stat - Defense Stat) x (Potency/100)
Conferral adds the buffer to the equation, so the same operation, and adds the result as total damage to the attack, not to every single individual hit. So if after everything Conferall would add 8 damage, it's 1 extra per hit on Meteor slash
NTA but does this mean that the unit that you want to buff using conferral should have a lot of discrete attacks? E.g a unit that counters a lot and has has its AP split across many moves?
Counters don't matter to regular Conferral, because it's "next attack". The elven archers have a different conferral that lasts for the entire battle, and that one does benefit from low AP attacks and single-PP using attacks, but I'm not convinced how good it really is.
I know it's common that many other Switch owners seethe about games leaking a week early, but I for one appreciate getting direct early impressions from people actually playing the full release of a game, so they can act as coal mine canaries and let everyone know if it's shit and/or broken ahead of time.
Haven't unlocked it myself yet, but from what I know if an entire unit is knocked out those characters are gone. Not sure if it does anything to enemy stats or it's just expert with permadeath tacked on.

Christ, this seems pointless with how much info the game's forecast obscures from you. A lot of times you need to test how a fight is going to even see what it is that you need to change, it can be as simple as one tactic. It's just going to encourage savescumming and/or overly cautious play.

I would not recommend anything lower than expert specially if you like to grind

That kinda depends on the enemies you're facing and your units.
As a general rule of thumb, your best damage dealers that don't have some sort of chain killing/refund mechanic (like how Knights, Sellswords, Warriors,... can keep gaining AP) unless you want the extra insurance that they'll start their chain. So something along the lines of your Wizards, Witches or Gryphon Riders are decent candidates for the AP amulet.

It has two very relevant counters. Radiant knight can negate magic damage to an entire row and wereowls can quick dispel the white cat-ear hood activation, so the wizard needs two full turns to charge it and you can beat down the team that's down a lot of resources from setting up the combo. Quick dispel is also available in item form I think, I've seen a gryphon in the coliseum with that, so it's easy to slot into teams.
With high initiative couldn't you just set up tactics to target casters and whoop the wizard before he casts?

Any advice for making hoplites in a formation? 1 in the front and damage dealers in the back is obvious, but I was wondering if some buffs or passives actually did something good
I run a dancer's bracelet with lapis pendant on my hoplite so he contributes some to killing stuff. I also run it on a team with two people with pursuit skills and even though sting does no damage, it procs the pursuits which is worthwhile. I found the active skills that increase defense and such to be fairly useless since the enemy has already done a round of attacks by the time your hoplite moves.
Pursuit procs seems like a good idea. An archer for dodges and a priest should be fine for now for the unit.
if you really want to use hoplites, you probably want at least a saintly knight to protect it from magic. it will still get buttfricked by warriors though
you can try using 2x sellswords to capitalize on the hoplite getting hit. however, with this unit, you have virtually zero anti-air or anti-cav and being only decent at killing infantry is actually really bad
i honestly don't see the point of hoplites. if you want cover, alain and josef both provide some kind of cover or pseudo cover. virginia as a valkyira and some solid equipment can also cover for allies since there is a shield that gives a cover skill and another shield that gives her self healing. or you can give her white knight shield and she can both heal other people and heal herself using pp. the white knight shield will take away her hp to heal others, which will vastly increase the power of her counterattack. she also has solid damage and is a very effective anti-swordmaster/anti-scout/anti-air unit
at worst, even josef is a better frontline guard tank than a hoplite

So I just played a short amount of the demo and there's a jarring plot element that is IMO a big problem and is likely never going to be acknowledge in the plot. The Unicorn Ring can undo mind control spell, but the victim loses all memory of their time under that spell. So what happens if the victim made relationships under all that time? Got married, had children and all that stuff? In the case of Hodrick, 10 years is a long fricking time.

Hoplites are pretty good vs wyverns and fliers the issue is their counters are so plentiful compared to other classes. Also I've been riding Travis (no homo) but there are certain teams where he just gets fricked and then the entire team wipes so that's a bit of a problem when it happens

It's armor. Flame is a debuff, the direct shot is still reduced by armor, and once you get some great debuff removal it's irrelevant.
The elf archer debuff removal is INSANE
Have you found any low effort ways to trigger the elf archer debuff removal? The 10% self healing on active skill brooches don't do the trick and slotting in a cleric to go out of her way to heal the archer isn't amazing when cleric can cleanse an entire row as a reaction to debuffs anyway.

Not yet, I just figured out you can Large Aid Kit into Selfless heal in the battle end to restore your squad's entire HP
But in the case of archers and debuffs on a single sturdy melee, I'm talking about Quick Cure. It cleanses and grants immunity to the next debuff.

I'm just getting this shit to work, and goddamn the difference between Yuzu and Ryujinx is night and day. Ryujinx gives you like 30 FPS with severe audio issues, Yuzu plays like a dream. What a tragedy that the better one is the one that got nuked.
I've got crazy audio crackles on yuzu with every setting and no audio in ryujinx.
No audio in ryujinx was fixed to me when I installed the 1.01 update for the game. Not sure why. I decided not to emulate though.
I'm still on the demo, but that's good to know. Audio crackles usually means unstable FPS, so I'll try lowering my settings and undocking.

In some cases, they let you access certain classes faster. You don't get Fran until the Scarlett rescue battle for instance.
You also might want more of a certain class than you are currently being given with non-generics.
no, named characters are just for watching rapport conversations and aesthetics. they are identical gameplay-wise
So you can have full freedom to try whatever compositions you want with as many of a particular unit type as you want. Lots of people will probably be happy enough putting the named characters in groups work well enough that get through the story. But people interested in going deep and optimizing the strategy are going to want to be able to have squads that spam certain types.
So what exactly does Mag/Phy potency mean? If it's 50 does that mean that the attack takes 50% of the user's attack/mag stat and use that to calculate damage? Mystic Conferral + Meteor slash sounds amazing.
Damage = (Attack Stat - Defense Stat) x (Potency/100)
Conferral adds the buffer to the equation, so the same operation, and adds the result as total damage to the attack, not to every single individual hit. So if after everything Conferall would add 8 damage, it's 1 extra per hit on Meteor slash
NTA but does this mean that the unit that you want to buff using conferral should have a lot of discrete attacks? E.g a unit that counters a lot and has has its AP split across many moves?
Counters don't matter to regular Conferral, because it's "next attack". The elven archers have a different conferral that lasts for the entire battle, and that one does benefit from low AP attacks and single-PP using attacks, but I'm not convinced how good it really is.

Maybe tactical is now called normal, expert is tactical, and expert is the higher one you would unlock after.
It's Story- Normal - Tactical - Expert. So if there is one after finishing the game, the name is yet to be mentioned.
Haven't unlocked it myself yet, but from what I know if an entire unit is knocked out those characters are gone. Not sure if it does anything to enemy stats or it's just expert with permadeath tacked on.
Hm if it's only permadead if the entire unit dies, that'd still be lenient enough to not make it a restart fest, but I wonder if it changes anything else
Christ, this seems pointless with how much info the game's forecast obscures from you. A lot of times you need to test how a fight is going to even see what it is that you need to change, it can be as simple as one tactic. It's just going to encourage savescumming and/or overly cautious play.

Overall the difficulty seemed pretty solid and it forced to have the specific counters and balanced compostiions altough i did 0 grinding, hoplites do not get frick by normal attacks, griffing, cavalry will absolutely one shot your infrantry if you don't have support guards to redicet damage/shield, etc even the gryphon knights/thiefs feels fairly useless if there happen to be any unit with high accuracy in the map
I would not recommend anything lower than expert specially if you like to grind

You can never recruit the sister. The Gryphon Knight who shows up is a different person, and you can recruit her regardless.
