I fricking love how the Rapport conversations feel like GBA/GC-era FE Support conversations that build upon the world's lore. I like hearing characters talk about the world they actually live in and the war they're actually fighting, rather than getting into generic anime shenanigans. It doesn't matter if they're talking about the humble Providence of Generica or being soldiers of Castletown, it's just pleasant to feel like all the named units I'm picking up are people who exist within this world.
I'm not even finding Alain boring, despite how thoroughly vanilla he is. It's like he's high-quality Madagascar vanilla from the bean, rather than supermarket imitation vanilla extract.
My only problem with rapport conversations is that so many of them are centered around fricking FOOD and EATING.

He's broken when you give him the final staff from the divine shards shop.
You will love him early on cause he also triggers burn against mots units, which is 20+ damage if they take an action and there is a staff that lets him do an extra attack at the end if he caused burn. Even against non armor units, shit piles up

I was losing because I forgot to set everyone to hit the lowest hp so they just ignored a healer with 2 hp who nursed an entire party back to health. Now I'm constantly fiddling with tactics, it's very fun.
If you're not abusing some broken samey builds, but doing something specific, you pretty much need tactics to work.
I'm winning with little difficulty to be honest. Nothing special, just loading squads to pump out as many attacks as possible, making sure one with magic damage come into contact with tanky dudes and having every team have a tank with some self-sustain.
Earlier in the game you can get away with it.
I'm playing on expert so I feel like tactics are very important, especially since there are tons of mixed units later that don't really get countered by a single unit.
Biggest issue is usually telling someone to ignore armor or to hit the backline, which they don't really do by default.
If you have some ultra specific strategy like gryphon cleave freeze, you have to tell the witch to only target the gryphon.
Well, I'll change it up if it starts getting tricky.

Travis Frontline, Clive backline, add Bruno to the backline later on, steamroll the first 15 battles.
Increase all Unit slots to 3 characters before opening new slots. You won't be deploying more than three Units per battle for several hours, and two-man units won't cut it.

Play around with unit formations. No unit combination is unbeatable, but some are superior to all others. Have specialized units to deal with specific threats. Learn the matchups and apply them. Don't hesitate to use your special abilities, they will save you if you get into trouble. Movement speed is determined by your whole unit; a slower individual in a group of cavalry will result in slow cavalry. Flying units can cross any terrain but have some devastatingly bad matchups. Keep checking towns for new and better gear for your guys. If it gets to be too much then just use the optimize button. Generic units are completely viable. Balance expanding an individual unit and the total number of units you can field. Enemies will launch attacks on your home base, be prepared to garrison a unit to defend it or rush back before it gets taken. Most maps have secret items or enemies that are off the beaten track.
Not really a strict gameplay thing, but when walking around the overworld, make sure to try to interact with as many buildings/ruins/etc. as you can. A lot of them give decent items or even equipment.
Something that you won't have to worry about for a bit but that is of note is in the Drakenhold region, you need a lot of the region's specific wood. Spend it sparingly, preferably leaving the town upgrades that require it for later.
Speaking of that, certain towns will have ports where you can board a ship to go somewhere else, usually an otherwise inaccessible area. I'd prioritize upgrading those towns over others. You start the game proper next to one of those towns.

Always repair town and station guards so you will have materials for repairing more towns and money
This alone will let you buy the 10k big ticket item that can be gamechanger, like the runic sword to let you wreck armors without needing mages or warriors

I'm not interested enough in this genre of game to buy it outright but it is very beautiful and I want to support vanillaware. Just keeping an eye out for how many recruitable furry characters there actually are and how much of the game can be spent traveling with them instead of the humans, cause that's the main thing that would turn me around on buying at full price.
There's a dedicated furry region. There are 5 unique recruitable furries and 4 of them have generic versions that you can mass recruit.
That region is meant to be your third region with level 30 enemies, but you can cheese your way in there earlier, around level 10~15.

How do you make swordmasters work? I've been trying stuff with witches and crit damage buffs to make the damage work but it seems like unless the target is a scout in the front row, they're not going to be doing much. Are you supposed to use them as a pseudo tank with the parry?

gambler coin makes them put out decent numbers, but their problem is that they will act first so nobody gets to deal with armored enemies beforehand so they end up wasting their strong attacks

I wish allied supports (archers and mages) weren't so dogshit. At best you'll do like 10 more damage, at worst it'll fully reroll your RNG, killing your whole team or making you deal less damage overall, it's such a weird system.
so I made squads of similar units to do bigger support numbers and you're right that it's 100% not worth it BUT it's still worth it to have a mage and archer be a leader just for the RNG reroll alone. The damage doesn't matter at all.
Healer supports are ok and 2+ mage assists can help you kill units before they act. 4 mage assists is like free 40 damage on every unit

I actually have come to appreciate them in combination with field skills.
Throwing some blazes, swings or arrow raisn and then an arrow assist tends to kill the backline.
Invaluable to get some archers or shamans out of the picture.

Any dodgetank can use a Lex support so they don't get merc'd by arrows. Squire shield lets you do ally cover so you can have a dodgetank on front row with Lex on backrow covering shit that goes past evasion
Most of my party is just Dodge Tank in front, a PP cover tank on the back with DPS + cleric.
