That's the optimal strategy in every FE. Weapon triangle has never done anything. See: Seth w/ javelin.
The thing is most of the enemy mobs are around Level 17 while my best one is only 11. Either the game forces me to go linear or it will buttfrick me endlessly.
When I played through the prologue, I thought Lex and Chloe would be shippyier based off cuckposts in these threads, but they're not even romantic in their Rapports. The only one getting cucked is Scarlett.

Fighter is a high defense unit that can do some damage, and incapacitate enemies while also defending more vulnerable backline characters from arrows, so they do well in protecting flying units.

That's pretty much why they exist. It's the same in FE. Bad in player hands, valuable nuisance for game balance in computer hands.
Of course certain players will actually like hulking wall archetype classes, so they do add flavor to the game.
Shamans do their job better. Offensive Curse applies its attack reduction before damage is taken into account, so it can just make an entire row of enemies do 1 damage a lot of the time.
Now that I unlocked promotions, any recs for secondary shields/swords to equip on Virginia/swordmasters, respectively? I noticed they don't seem to affect stats at all, so I guess I want something with a good passive effect.

I'm in Elfheim just before the castle where you rescue eltolinde, and there's this spot that has an overworld item that I can't reach. there was an item there during the fight in that area as well, and I grabbed it then, but i know the overworld items and in-battle items on the map are separate, but I can't find any way to get there. It's right next to that thing you need to pray at for stage effects.
Does anyone know how to get there? I tried running into the wall on every side of the map surrounding it, but just can't find a hidden path.

What are some useful formations? I accidentally put two cavalry, a griffon and a healer together and they just steamroll while my other groups feel underwhelming.
I had no archers and steamrolled Drakenhold. I put the wizard and hag in a party with MC and femboy Travis which was enough for my gryphon parties to mow down everything else. The only archer I had was the one you picked up until you beat the shifting sands portion. She was very useful so I kept her in the back row spamming rapid reload which took out anything else giving me trouble.
For something a bit spicy; in Drakenhold I've been using dual swordfighters reaching 100 crit with Keen Edge, a gryphon, and Rosalinde with Ice Conferral and the Gambler's Coin. Rosalinde uses her PP generating skill to get back more energy for Gamble's Coin buff, since Ice Conferral is rather expensive. Works even better once you get the Angel Plume and can make her move before the swordies.
It counters all the fliers and thieves and then some. Pretty much every fight without guardgays is a slaughter in which my side takes 0 damage.
gladiator+cleric+druid+1 other AoE DPS (preferably another gladiator or a dark marquis)
give the cleric and druid equipment that buffs the gladiator's attack, give the gladiator full DPS equipment. +initiative equipment is also very good for the druid and the gladiator. you get a +15 initiative feather at the start of elfheim and you can get a +20 one from doing these treasure maps:

Not him, but I'm currently at rank 3 I think, and I'm being stopped by a wall of guarding shields.
How do you make passive steal unguardable? I've been trying to find gear to give Travis a way to bypass guard, but so far haven't found anything, his unit is falling off really quickly atm because every enemy team has an enemy that guards.
Druids/Shamans are insane, Offensive Curse is the most broken ability in the entire game and it is not even close. Trivializes the entire game so much that I really think it is bugged.
If you want a fair challenge, I highly discourage using it, but if you like using it, then by all means, sometimes it is fun to just crush content 15 levels higher.

Defensive curse is good, but I think it is a fair move. (also, defensive curse's tooltip text is wrong, it actually does reduce enemy defense)
If Offensive curse reduced damage it would also be fair IMO, but because it reduces attack before defense is subtracted, it is just nuts.

Let's assume enemy has 62 attack, you have 30 defense, enemy attacks you for 32 damage with a 100 potency ability.
The way I WANT offensive curse to work is to cut damage in half, so you would take 16 damage.
The way it actually works: Offensive curse cuts the enemy's attack in half to 31, so vs your 30 defense, you take 1 damage.
It is a pretty good move lol

This is how all buffs work btw. Buffs are a separate category from potency, critical hits, draughts, etc. Buffs are universally applied directly to raw attack/def, whereas the rest are modifiers or adjustments that are applied after attack and defense have already interacted.

I'm just putting out there. I don't think a lot of people know (or care). It's why Chloe's keen buff is just straight up inferior to a regular ass Powerful Call, despite the crit modifier being 1.5x and PC being 1.3x.

I ended up setting up a coliseum clear team after finishing drakenhold
Drake Rider, Gilbert, Gryph rider frontline, Scarlett and Druid backline
Set Drake Rider on the Dragoon Spear, Gilbert on Tailwind accessory and best DPS set with the wyvern rein shit on Gryph and set it to attack row with most combatant and to not hit frozen target, set Scarlett to do Frost Bestowal and Active Cure, and set Druid to do the Sandstorm
Should be able to clear the Coliseum up to Amalia with some tweaking, and once you clear the first phase, the Dreadnaught phase just need you to have someone to guard seal her so you can steal all her PP, and without her passive, she just can't fricking kill thieves in frontline. Just have your unit run burn or poison.
Don't use crimson epee or other AP destroying effect since you still want the Dreadnought to take her turn in order to lower her HP from burn/poison
My party was like 2 Thief, 2 Wizards to clear the dreadnought encounter

Named characters usually join at a higher level. At the end of the day I'll eat a shitty unoptimized stat spread if the unit is closer to getting relevant skills. That said you can often use both like I'm doing, and a few named characters have great growths like Magellan.

Why not just make the Gryphon vanguard into a unit capable of killing? Gryphons have great combat so it's easy to. Though I've done a version of this a few times, by happenstance.
A lot of those people lean hard on broken moves, boss rush, and RNG manip the battle forecast, so I would take those opinions with a grain of salt. I wish expert was a bit harder myself, but I feel like I do have to actually think about sending units at the enemy and plan out good tactical setups in advance.
If you are throwing at me some accessories that allow a team to instant nuke the enemy to oblivion, or debuff them to a crawl right at the beginning of the fight, I WILL be using them. That's not "abusing broken moves", that's playing the game as intended.
It's not my fricking fault the game doesn't throw a cleric, a radiant knight and a shaman into every enemy team comp. That's like walking outside naked, you are just begging to get railed.

What's there to be unsure about? Pick the hardest one like everyone else. Not because you're a genius but because everything under it is for actual apes and journalists.
First area is infantry central, so cavs just run roughshod over it. Later areas are not what I would call super challenging, butt you do need to think a about unit matchups, valor ability usage, consumables if you use those, etc.
Cav has ben mostly useless after the desert.

My cav also gets absolutely shredded by the wolves in the 3rd zone and they can't hit the foxes.
All they are good for is sniping the occasional tower with some poor archers.

Warrior's knockback skill saved me some annoying/difficult fights in Gloucester's map funnily enough. My gank squad wasn't well equipped to deal with the wyvern buttholes guarding the boss, so I just kept cheaply spamming Kitra's valor to knock the wyverns away. Pretty funny.
I really like it, I thought FFT War of the Lions and TO Reborn leaned way too heavily into the olde English to the extent that it was hard to really keep up, but this game I think gets what it is try to convey across really well.
I like petite girls doing grown up activities with dignity (and some gap moe) and the big shield is cute. Same with the warriors. For comparison, Ochlys is pretty slender and keeping her slender was the right call imo.

I don't even like her as a character, but I really don't get why so many people think she's bad/worse than other clerics, she typically has higher magic and her unique skills are solid too
She can use conferral books and cleric staves are pretty great because they often give +AP/PP without drawbacks
She's a cleric without the default refresh but with more agressive item options
I think she's good but not in the very same role as cleric until you supplement it with equipment, which is a good thing, because cleric is very situational
her magic doesn't seem that much better. Same as sharon while 3 levels lower so probably only 1 or 2 while same level. The issue is that her skills are worse. Her magic attack is much lower than a witch or wizard so her attack is crap other than purging buff, and her debuff heal is an active so you need to line up your initiative to make her heal it on time.
Maybe she'll get better when promoted but as of now the regular cleric is much better.

You could cheese through while having a pretty hard time, but then the previous areas will be complete cakewalks
Albion is also pretty much impossible to get through without clearing most of either Elfheim or Bastorias

You need to take a ship at either the end of Bastorias or Elfheim to get to it, but even levels aside its probably the trickiest region in terms of fights
The first Bastorias main mission is pretty easy, with some cheesy blind/status setup you can probably do it or just run multiple teams into the boss until he's dead it's all infantry so cavs do good damage, then you can get wolves and owls
Honestly even Elfland will spread your cheeks, and the game soft recommends that as a viable alternative to Drakenhold. I think it'll be interesting to see what people can come up with to "sequence break" but I feel that it's inherently somewhat limited.
i mean you can hit bastorias early if you can beat the 20something encounter to open the northern gate, and you can hit Albion from Elheim by liberating one of the harbor,
The 1st slot move will always activate until PP is exhausted UNLESS you modify its conditionals to *not do so*, or its inherent activation mechanism isn't triggered (so for the Wall skill, you need to be hit obviously).
For example, if you set the 1st slot active skill to "First Action," it'll only trigger on the first action. Then it'll go down the list to the next priority skill.

What is the point of Wyverns? About to swap mine back to a Griffon for faster initiative, better AoE (since my sole cat ears is about to be used on my caster) and the god tier valor movement skill.
You get one of the earliest full screen AoE with the Dragoon spear, Dragoon Dive lets drone strike bosses as valor skill.
I like it enough for boss killing setup to run both Wyvern and Gryph rider, since you can get pretty insane initiative boost with Tailwind, so Gryph rider could freeze half the team with her row attack +frost bestowal, then Wyvern rider cleans up with Dragoon Dive
I used it for a while but like I said, my hood is going to my mage team now and I'm probably not going to grind the second since I bought other stuff with the coins I made getting Amalia.
That was the clue though; I forgot wyverns don't use spears so can't use the channeling strat. I guess without that wyverns are better.

The thing is most of the enemy mobs are around Level 17 while my best one is only 11. Either the game forces me to go linear or it will buttfrick me endlessly.

Fighter is a high defense unit that can do some damage, and incapacitate enemies while also defending more vulnerable backline characters from arrows, so they do well in protecting flying units.

They're fine in a backup squad. Expert difficulty has enemies beeline for your base, so an immovable wall garrisoned in your base is pretty useful.

That's pretty much why they exist. It's the same in FE. Bad in player hands, valuable nuisance for game balance in computer hands.
Of course certain players will actually like hulking wall archetype classes, so they do add flavor to the game.

Shamans do their job better. Offensive Curse applies its attack reduction before damage is taken into account, so it can just make an entire row of enemies do 1 damage a lot of the time.

Now that I unlocked promotions, any recs for secondary shields/swords to equip on Virginia/swordmasters, respectively? I noticed they don't seem to affect stats at all, so I guess I want something with a good passive effect.
Is there any difference between named units of the same class if you mirror their growths to be the same? For example, Melisandre vs. Leah.

From what I've seen, they don't add to a stat that you already have a higher stat weapon for. For example giving a 12 attack sword won't boost anything if you have a 13 attack sword. But if it has a different stat, like +magic attack, that will be added.
In reality you would probably just want extra ap/pp and skills.

I'm in Elfheim just before the castle where you rescue eltolinde, and there's this spot that has an overworld item that I can't reach. there was an item there during the fight in that area as well, and I grabbed it then, but i know the overworld items and in-battle items on the map are separate, but I can't find any way to get there. It's right next to that thing you need to pray at for stage effects.
Does anyone know how to get there? I tried running into the wall on every side of the map surrounding it, but just can't find a hidden path.

What are some useful formations? I accidentally put two cavalry, a griffon and a healer together and they just steamroll while my other groups feel underwhelming.
Cavalry mow everything down until you get to Drakenhold. Archers shine in Drak because Wyverns are a pain.
I had no archers and steamrolled Drakenhold. I put the wizard and hag in a party with MC and femboy Travis which was enough for my gryphon parties to mow down everything else. The only archer I had was the one you picked up until you beat the shifting sands portion. She was very useful so I kept her in the back row spamming rapid reload which took out anything else giving me trouble.

For something a bit spicy; in Drakenhold I've been using dual swordfighters reaching 100 crit with Keen Edge, a gryphon, and Rosalinde with Ice Conferral and the Gambler's Coin. Rosalinde uses her PP generating skill to get back more energy for Gamble's Coin buff, since Ice Conferral is rather expensive. Works even better once you get the Angel Plume and can make her move before the swordies.
It counters all the fliers and thieves and then some. Pretty much every fight without guardgays is a slaughter in which my side takes 0 damage.

How do you make passive steal unguardable? I've been trying to find gear to give Travis a way to bypass guard, but so far haven't found anything, his unit is falling off really quickly atm because every enemy team has an enemy that guards.

Druids/Shamans are insane, Offensive Curse is the most broken ability in the entire game and it is not even close. Trivializes the entire game so much that I really think it is bugged.
If you want a fair challenge, I highly discourage using it, but if you like using it, then by all means, sometimes it is fun to just crush content 15 levels higher.

I think Offensive curse was meant to reduce damage, while Defensive curse was meant to reduce defenses, along with guard seal.
It just doesn't make sense in both the naming and the fact that one is just a straight up better version on the other.
Defensive curse is good, but I think it is a fair move. (also, defensive curse's tooltip text is wrong, it actually does reduce enemy defense)
If Offensive curse reduced damage it would also be fair IMO, but because it reduces attack before defense is subtracted, it is just nuts.

Let's assume enemy has 62 attack, you have 30 defense, enemy attacks you for 32 damage with a 100 potency ability.
The way I WANT offensive curse to work is to cut damage in half, so you would take 16 damage.
The way it actually works: Offensive curse cuts the enemy's attack in half to 31, so vs your 30 defense, you take 1 damage.

This is how all buffs work btw. Buffs are a separate category from potency, critical hits, draughts, etc. Buffs are universally applied directly to raw attack/def, whereas the rest are modifiers or adjustments that are applied after attack and defense have already interacted.
I know, I just think it was a mistake to treat offensive debuffs the same way as defense ones, since offense will naturally be bigger (since the units were designed to do damage to each other)
I'm just putting out there. I don't think a lot of people know (or care). It's why Chloe's keen buff is just straight up inferior to a regular ass Powerful Call, despite the crit modifier being 1.5x and PC being 1.3x.
Though thinking about this, maybe Chloe's keen buff has applications for one highly specific thing? Warrior's basic attack ignores 100% of armored defense anyway...can we get some Radiant Dawn Luna strats going, I wonder? I might have to try this...

I ended up setting up a coliseum clear team after finishing drakenhold
Drake Rider, Gilbert, Gryph rider frontline, Scarlett and Druid backline
Set Drake Rider on the Dragoon Spear, Gilbert on Tailwind accessory and best DPS set with the wyvern rein shit on Gryph and set it to attack row with most combatant and to not hit frozen target, set Scarlett to do Frost Bestowal and Active Cure, and set Druid to do the Sandstorm
Should be able to clear the Coliseum up to Amalia with some tweaking, and once you clear the first phase, the Dreadnaught phase just need you to have someone to guard seal her so you can steal all her PP, and without her passive, she just can't fricking kill thieves in frontline. Just have your unit run burn or poison.
Don't use crimson epee or other AP destroying effect since you still want the Dreadnought to take her turn in order to lower her HP from burn/poison
My party was like 2 Thief, 2 Wizards to clear the dreadnought encounter

Named characters usually join at a higher level. At the end of the day I'll eat a shitty unoptimized stat spread if the unit is closer to getting relevant skills. That said you can often use both like I'm doing, and a few named characters have great growths like Magellan.

Why not just make the Gryphon vanguard into a unit capable of killing? Gryphons have great combat so it's easy to. Though I've done a version of this a few times, by happenstance.

People still complain about Expert being too easy.
A lot of those people lean hard on broken moves, boss rush, and RNG manip the battle forecast, so I would take those opinions with a grain of salt. I wish expert was a bit harder myself, but I feel like I do have to actually think about sending units at the enemy and plan out good tactical setups in advance.
If you are throwing at me some accessories that allow a team to instant nuke the enemy to oblivion, or debuff them to a crawl right at the beginning of the fight, I WILL be using them. That's not "abusing broken moves", that's playing the game as intended.
It's not my fricking fault the game doesn't throw a cleric, a radiant knight and a shaman into every enemy team comp. That's like walking outside naked, you are just begging to get railed.

What's there to be unsure about? Pick the hardest one like everyone else. Not because you're a genius but because everything under it is for actual apes and journalists.
start with expert, you can always turn it down if you're a brainlet
10 hours into Expert, so far it's been really easy. I had to triple check to make sure I was on the right difficulty. Maybe it gets harder later?
First area is infantry central, so cavs just run roughshod over it. Later areas are not what I would call super challenging, butt you do need to think a about unit matchups, valor ability usage, consumables if you use those, etc.
Cav has ben mostly useless after the desert.
Everywhere are fliers.
My cav also gets absolutely shredded by the wolves in the 3rd zone and they can't hit the foxes.
All they are good for is sniping the occasional tower with some poor archers.
Expert is piss easy. Fliers steamroll most everything, including knife ears if you have a cleric or good team comp. When you get to iceland, evasion and magic rule the day. Save up your shards for meteor.

I don't even like her as a character, but I really don't get why so many people think she's bad/worse than other clerics, she typically has higher magic and her unique skills are solid too
She can use conferral books and cleric staves are pretty great because they often give +AP/PP without drawbacks

I think she's good but not in the very same role as cleric until you supplement it with equipment, which is a good thing, because cleric is very situational
her magic doesn't seem that much better. Same as sharon while 3 levels lower so probably only 1 or 2 while same level. The issue is that her skills are worse. Her magic attack is much lower than a witch or wizard so her attack is crap other than purging buff, and her debuff heal is an active so you need to line up your initiative to make her heal it on time.
Maybe she'll get better when promoted but as of now the regular cleric is much better.
People are using her for healing when she's one the best buffbots in the game. Alain can tank+heal himself just fine. God combo right there.

How “open world” is this? I want to go to Albion or Bastorias early but it sounds like I’m gonna be filtered by the enemy level.
You could cheese through while having a pretty hard time, but then the previous areas will be complete cakewalks
Albion is also pretty much impossible to get through without clearing most of either Elfheim or Bastorias

You need to take a ship at either the end of Bastorias or Elfheim to get to it, but even levels aside its probably the trickiest region in terms of fights
I was wondering why I couldn't find any ships to head there since I just recruited Hilda.
Honestly I just wanna see if I can get some units early. Werewolf looked cool so I wanted to get him first after the rescue mission.
The first Bastorias main mission is pretty easy, with some cheesy blind/status setup you can probably do it or just run multiple teams into the boss until he's dead it's all infantry so cavs do good damage, then you can get wolves and owls
It would be feasible if the game had level scaling implemented, the main issue would be that angel, beast and elf unit start off promoted

Honestly even Elfland will spread your cheeks, and the game soft recommends that as a viable alternative to Drakenhold. I think it'll be interesting to see what people can come up with to "sequence break" but I feel that it's inherently somewhat limited.
i mean you can hit bastorias early if you can beat the 20something encounter to open the northern gate, and you can hit Albion from Elheim by liberating one of the harbor,

What is the point of Wyverns? About to swap mine back to a Griffon for faster initiative, better AoE (since my sole cat ears is about to be used on my caster) and the god tier valor movement skill.
You get one of the earliest full screen AoE with the Dragoon spear, Dragoon Dive lets drone strike bosses as valor skill.
I like it enough for boss killing setup to run both Wyvern and Gryph rider, since you can get pretty insane initiative boost with Tailwind, so Gryph rider could freeze half the team with her row attack +frost bestowal, then Wyvern rider cleans up with Dragoon Dive
I used it for a while but like I said, my hood is going to my mage team now and I'm probably not going to grind the second since I bought other stuff with the coins I made getting Amalia.
That was the clue though; I forgot wyverns don't use spears so can't use the channeling strat. I guess without that wyverns are better.
